This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Adolescent Sleep Hygiene Scale (ASHS), a self-report measure assessing sleep practices theoretically important for optimal sleep. Data were collected on a community sample of 514 adolescents (16–19; 17.7 ± 0.4 years; 50% female) participating in the late adolescent examination of a longitudinal study on sleep and health. Sleep hygiene and daytime sleepiness were obtained from adolescent reports, behavior from caretaker reports, and sleep-wake estimation on weekdays from wrist actigraphy. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated the empirical and conceptually based factor structure were similar for six of the eight proposed sleep hygiene domains. Internal …

The True Value Of A Law Degree, Or, Why Did Thurgood Marshall Go To Law School?, R. Lawrence Dessem, Gregory M. Stein
The True Value Of A Law Degree, Or, Why Did Thurgood Marshall Go To Law School?, R. Lawrence Dessem, Gregory M. Stein
Faculty Publications
There has been vigorous debate in recent months over whether a law degree is a worthwhile investment. Much of this discussion has focused on whether the economic costs of obtaining a degree pay off over a lawyer’s career. This conversation has largely overlooked the many non-economic benefits of a law degree. In this essay, we seek to re-introduce several non-economic factors back into this important dialogue. We suggest that prospective law school applicants would be wise to consider these non-economic factors in addition to economic ones.
Vitamin B12 Distribution Patterns In Marine Sediments Revealed By A New Elisa Method, Meichen Liu
Vitamin B12 Distribution Patterns In Marine Sediments Revealed By A New Elisa Method, Meichen Liu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Vitamin B12 is an organic micronutrient in the ocean, and it is required for the growth of majority of phytoplankton. Because of the ultra-low concentrations of vitamin B12 in the ocean and the lack of suitable analytical methods, the distribution, transport and biogeochemical cycling of vitamin B12 in marine ecosystem have not been essentially documented. In this thesis, vitamin B12 distribution and reaction patterns in water column and marine sediments were preliminary studied by using newly developed immunoassay methods. Two new sensitive and specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods have been developed and compared in Chapter …
Using Quantitative Genetics Methods To Estimate Heritability Of Larval Co2-Resistance In A Coastal Marine Fish, Alex James Malvezzi
Using Quantitative Genetics Methods To Estimate Heritability Of Larval Co2-Resistance In A Coastal Marine Fish, Alex James Malvezzi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Marine organisms are under pressure to adapt to anthropogenic changes that are rapidly altering ocean water chemistry. Since the Industrial Revolution, human activities have caused an increase in atmospheric CO2 which is partly absorbed by the world's oceans, thereby reducing ocean pH, aragonite and calcite saturation states in a process known as ocean acidification (OA). Concern over these changes has caused a surge in scientific interest to better understand and predict how OA affects marine organisms from single celled algae to marine calcifying invertebrates and vertebrates such as fish. Since most studies thus far have focused on short-term responses of …

Population Dynamics Of The Ctenophore Mnemiopsis Leidyi And Implications For Bottom-Up And Top-Down Controls Of The Plankton Community, Marianne E. Mcnamara
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation investigated the ecology of the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi in Great South Bay, New York via field and laboratory studies. The research focused on the role of M. leidyi in controlling plankton community structure and the influence of the plankton community in regulating seasonal population blooms of M. leidyi. First, this study documented top-down control of microplankton by larval M. leidyi in Great South Bay. A relationship between high adult M. leidyi/low mesozooplankton with high microplankton abundance was also identified, and preceded an increase in larval ctenophores, suggesting that intense feeding on mesozooplankton by adult M. leidyi enhances prey …
Coastal And Marine Spatial Planning (Cmsp): An Ecosystem Based Approach To Conservation And Management In Long Island Sound, Christine Ann O'Connell
Coastal And Marine Spatial Planning (Cmsp): An Ecosystem Based Approach To Conservation And Management In Long Island Sound, Christine Ann O'Connell
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Past approaches to ocean management in the United States are no longer sustainable because they were largely reactionary and applied in a piecemeal fashion. A more comprehensive ecosystem-based approach is needed. Ocean policy and management practices should be defined by ecological boundaries, not political ones, and should incorporate all elements and processes in the system, including human uses. Thus, a regional, multi-objective plan, such as coastal and marine spatial planning (CMSP), that addresses the cumulative impacts of current and future environmental stressors, is essential. Coastal and marine spatial plans separate conflicting uses in marine environments based upon an established community …
Comparisons Of Intermediate Oxidation State Sulfur Compounds In The Episodically, Lan Thi Tong
Comparisons Of Intermediate Oxidation State Sulfur Compounds In The Episodically, Lan Thi Tong
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The anoxic Cariaco Basin located on the Venezuela continental shelf and the seasonally anoxic Forge River located on the south shore of Long Island are two quite different aquatic systems. However, they are both characterized by the pulsed intrusion of oxygen into sulfidic waters, where sulfur intermediates including sulfite (SO32-), thiosulfate (S2O32-), and zero-valent sulfur (So) are usually found. In this study, I investigated the distribution of sulfur intermediates and the relative importance of chemical and biological hydrogen sulfide oxidation to the sulfur intermediates distribution in these two systems. The sulfide oxidation rate, determined using Forge River water with an …
Mixture Modeling Of Next Generation Sequencing Data And Its Applications To Genotyping And Estimating Genotype Frequencies, Jayon Lihm
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Estimating the probability that an individual has a base pair nucleodite different from the reference nucleotide is important in next generation sequencing (NGS) research. I present a method for modeling the frequency of single nucleotide polymorphism variants in the exome capturing sequence data of an individual. A mixture distribution was used to model the proportion of alternative alleles at a specified base pair position assuming a biallelic single nucleotide polymorphism model. I measured the proportion of alternative alleles for positions in chromosome 1 exome sequencing data fro two trios taken from the Pilot 3 data in the 1000 Genomes Project. …
The Chinese Equity Risk Factor Model Based On Heavy Tailed Distributions, And Its Application In Risk Management And Portfolio Optimization, Tianyu Lu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In financial risk and portfolio management, the heavy tailed distributions of one-dimensional asset returns and complex dependence structure among multi-dimensional asset returns are two widely discussed problems. Various distributions, which share the desired properties, such as heavy tails, skewness and kurtosis, have been introduced and applied into practice. On the other hand, factor modeling as a technique of dimension reduction, has been used in multivariate statistical analysis and econometric model building, especially in high-dimensional world of financial risk management In this dissertation, we study these two popular problems in risk and portfolio management. The findings are empirically examined through their …

A Culture-Independent Study Of Dominant Sulfur-Utilizing Chemoautotrophs Within The Cariaco Basin's Redoxcline, Agnieszka Podlaska
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
As in many other stratified bodies of water, microbial chemoautotrophic productivity in the anoxic Cariaco Basin is a major source of fixed carbon across the oxic-anoxic boundary yet the identity of the chemoautotrophic microbes and what fuels their metabolism are poorly understood. In this work, multiple techniques were used to investigate the distribution, abundance, and activity of major proteobacterial and archaeal clades during nine cruises from 2006 to 2010 in order to identify the dominant chemoautotrophs. Among seven clades examined in this study by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), epsilonproteobacteria and betaproteobacteria were the prevalent clades and on average accounted …

Prey Plasticity Responses To A Native And Nonnative Predator, Alexandra Hooks
Prey Plasticity Responses To A Native And Nonnative Predator, Alexandra Hooks
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental stimuli is exceedingly common across systems and taxa. For instance, predation risk in many gastropods can induce a variety of defenses including growing thicker shells, growing shells of different shapes, and developing apertural teeth. However, the role of coevolution between species that produce these defense responses and their consumers is not well known. This thesis examines the responses of an ovoviviparous gastropod (Littorina saxatilis) with low dispersal from three different habitats (marsh habitat, rocky habitat, and cobble stone habitat) to the presence of chemical cues from a native (Dyspanopeus sayi) and nonnative (Hemigrapsus sanguineus) …

The Genetic Diversity Of Endangered Fishes In The Northwest Atlantic, Shannon Joy O'Leary
The Genetic Diversity Of Endangered Fishes In The Northwest Atlantic, Shannon Joy O'Leary
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Genetic diversity is the fundamental building block of biodiversity, harboring the adaptive potential of populations. The magnitude of the two main factors eroding genetic diversity, inbreeding and genetic drift, increases as the effective population size (Ne) decreases. Ne describes the number of reproductively mature adults effectively contributing to the next generation. In populations with overlapping generations, the effective number of breeders (Nb). Loss of genetic diversity has long been a concern for terrestrial and freshwater organisms, but traditionally less so for fisheries management due to the paradigm that marine fish populations are large, panmictic and thus resistant to the erosion …

An Automated, Track-Based Climatology Of Rossby Wave Packets, Matthew Souders
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This research produces an objective, track-based climatology of Rossby wave packets (RWPs) and tests the sensitivity of the results to changes in the methods used in filtering the raw data and in tracking. NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis wind and geopotential height data at 300 hPa every 6 hours were spectrally filtered using a Hilbert transform technique under the assumption that RWPs propagate along a waveguide defined by the 14-day running average of the 300 hPa wind. After some spatial smoothing, the local maxima in RWP envelope amplitude (WPA) were tracked using two objective techniques: a point-based cost optimization routine and a hybrid …

Nanoindentation Of Piezoelectric Materials, Guang Cheng
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Piezoelectric materials, with their unique electromechanical coupling characteristics, have found widespread use in many applications as sensors and actuators. With a continuing demand for macroscale piezoelectric devices with better performance characteristics, numerous efforts have been made to synthesize " bulk" monolithic and composite piezoelectric materials with better properties. More recently, within the context of microscale devices such as smart MEMS, self-powered sensors, microbatteries, and energy harvesting devices, there is a growing interest in developing " thin-film" piezoelectric materials. While, advances in microfabrication technology have greatly helped the synthesis and fabrication of piezoelectric thin films and structures, there is a continuing …

In this work, four catalysts have been studied for their photocatalytic efficiency by testing each with methylene blue dye solution. Three catalysts were synthesized by the electrospinning method and then compared with the fourth commercially available catalyst for their photocatalytic activity. The basic metal oxide studied was titanium dioxide. Nanocomposite mats of pure titania, copper doped titania and copper doped degussa P25 titania, were synthesized using the electrospinning method. The pure titania and copper doped titania nanocomposites possessed the anatase phase which was obtained by annealing the as-spun nanocomposites at 4500C. All the catalysts were analyzed for their photocatalytic activity …
Physical And Chemical Modifications Of Surface Properties Lead To Alterations In Osteoblast Behavior, Kathryn Elizabeth Dorst
Physical And Chemical Modifications Of Surface Properties Lead To Alterations In Osteoblast Behavior, Kathryn Elizabeth Dorst
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Proper formation of the bone extracellular matrix (ECM), or osteoid, depends on the surface properties of pre-existing tissue and the aqueous chemical environment. Both of these factors greatly influence osteoblast migration, cytoskeletal organization, and calcium nodule production, important aspects when considering the biocompatibility of bone implants. By perturbing the physical and/or chemical micro-environment, it may be possible to elucidate effects on cellular function. To examine these factors, murine pre-osteoblasts (MC3T3-E1 subclones 4 and 24) were seeded on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrates containing " wide" micro-patterned ridges (20 μ m width, 30 μ m pitch, & 2 μ m height), " narrow" …

Study On Improvement Of Plasma Etch Resistance Of Photo Resists And E-Beam Resists By Sequential Infiltration Synthesis, Xianghai Meng
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Deep etch is always a challenge in semiconductor industry due to the requirement of high selectivity and fidelity for the process. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a new thin film deposition technique which is self-limiting and provides excellent conformality and reproducibility. Other than the application of deposition, ALD also provides an approach which operates at semi-static mode to modify the characteristic of the bulk of resist, which will render a high resistance to plasma etch as well as sidewall protection. In this research, etching resistance of two types of e-beam resists and two types of photoresists is treated by sequential …
An In Vitro Study Of The Anti-Biofilm Properties Of Proanthocyanidin And Chitosan In Pseudomonas Syringae Pv. Papulans, Kai Song
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Biofilm-forming bacteria are a form of planktonic microorganisms that can become resistant against conventional antibiotics. Because they are difficult to eradicate, biofilm-forming bacteria are extremely problematic for the medical industry areas. Thus, materials that can distort biofilm structure would be helpful for eliminating chronic infection and decreasing bacterial resistance. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the anti-biofilm effect of two bio-derived substances, proanthocyanidin and chitosan. Proanthocyanidins are secondary plant metabolites that are reported to have antibiotic and antioxidant functions. Chitosan is a deacetylated derivative of chitin, which is abundant in the exoskeleton of crustaceans and insects. It …

Development Of New Generation Of Perovskite Based Noble Metal/Semiconductor Photocatalysts For Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Production, Peichuan Shen
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In recent decades, semiconductor photocatalysis has attracted a growing attention as a possible alternative to existing methods of hydrogen production, hydrocarbon conversion and organic compound oxidation. Many types of photocatalysts have been developed and tested for photocatalytic applications. However, most of them do not have notable activity in visible light region, which limits their practical applications. Development of photocatalysts, which can be activated by visible light provides a promising way forward to utilize both UV and visible portions of solar spectrum. In this thesis, two main methods to advance visible light driven photocatalysis, such as bandgap modification through doping and …

Rational design and assembly of colloidal metal nanoparticles with fluorescent materials like organic dyes, conjugated polymers or colloidal quantum dots has stimulated intense research interest in the past decade in view of obtaining nanomaterials with controllable optical properties and with applicability in optoelectronics and biosensing. The interaction between a fluorescent molecule and a metal nanoparticle, also known as plasmon-exciton interaction, is determined by several factors such as type, shape and size of the metal nanoparticle, electronic properties of the fluorescent molecule, metal nanoparticle-fluorescence molecule separation distance and local nanoenvironment. By tuning one or more of such factors one can achieve …

Zinc oxide (ZnO) has been well known as a transparent, dielectric, piezoelectric and wide band gap material. The potential capabilities have been demonstrated for a wide range of applications such as piezoelectric transducer, gas sensor, optical waveguides and transparent electrode. It could also be applied as a substrate material for GaN-based devices. However, while some applications have already been realized, issues relating to crystalline defects remain a barrier to the successful realization of several others. In this thesis, the central focus of Chapter II is to characterize threading dislocations in hydrothermal grown ZnO substrates through simulation work as well as …
