Abstract

In many ways, James A. Van Allen defined and “invented” modern space research. His example showed the way for government-university partners to pursue basic research that also served important national and international goals. He was a tireless advocate for space exploration and for the role of space science in the spectrum of national priorities.

Beyond Prejudice And Pride: The Human Sciences In Nineteenth And Twentieth Century Latin America, Julia E. Rodriguez

History

Grappling with problematics of status and hierarchy, recent literature on the history of the human sciences in Latin America has gone through three overlapping phases. First, the scholarship has reflected a dialogue between Latin American scientists and their European colleagues, characterized by the “center/periphery” model of scientific diffusion. Next, scholars drew on postcolonial theory to undermine the power of the “center” and to recover the role of local agents, including both elites and subalterns. In the wake of numerous studies embracing both models, the way has been cleared to look at multiple dimensions simultaneously. Histories of the human sciences in …

Layered Long Term Co-Culture Of Hepatocytes And Endothelial Cells On A Transwell Membrane: Toward Engineering The Liver Sinusoid, Young Bok (Abraham) Kang, Siddhartha Rawat, Joseph Cirillo, Michael Bouchard, Hongseok (Moses) Noh

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

This paper presents a novel liver model that mimics the liver sinusoid where most liver activities occur. A key aspect of our current liver model is a layered co-culture of primary rat hepatocytes (PRHs) and primary rat liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) or bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) on a transwell membrane. When a layered co-culture was attempted with a thin matrigel layer placed between hepatocytes and endothelial cells to mimic the Space of Disse, the cells did not form completely separated monolayers. However, when hepatocytes and endothelial cells were cultured on the opposite sides of a transwell membrane, PRHs …

A Rooftop Revolution? A Multidisciplinary Analysis Of State-Level Residential Solar Programs In New Jersey And Massachusetts, Alden Griffith, Monica Higgins, James Morton Turner

Faculty Research and Scholarship

The success of alternative energy policies is usually measured in terms of energy capacity. By this metric, state-level policies to promote solar installations in New Jersey and Massachusetts have been a success. To fully evaluate these policies, however, it is necessary to consider how these policy programs are structured and funded, who participates in these programs, and the complete life-cycle consequences of 'clean' energy technologies. This paper focuses specifically on residential solar installations, which represent more than half of the total U.S. rooftop solar capacity potential. It takes a multidisciplinary approach that draws on policy analysis, spatial and demographic analyses, …

Sublethal Behavioral And Physiological Effects Of The Biomedical Bleeding Process On The American Horseshoe Crab, Limulus Polyphemus, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Rebecca L. Anderson, Christopher C. Chabot

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

The hemolymph of the American horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, is harvested from over 500,000 animals annually to produce Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), a medically important product used to detect pathogenic bacteria. Declining abundance of spawning Limulus females in heavily harvested regions suggests deleterious effects of this activity, and while mortality rates of the harvest process are known to be 10%–30%, sublethal behavioral and physiological effects are not known. In this study, we determined the impact of the harvest process on locomotion and hemocyanin levels of 28 female horseshoe crabs. While mortality rates after bleeding (18%) were similar to previous studies, …

Macrodeterminants Of Labor Migration From Cee Accession Countries To Select Eu Countries, Denise Joanne François-Seeney Dec 2013

Macrodeterminants Of Labor Migration From Cee Accession Countries To Select Eu Countries, Denise Joanne François-Seeney

Dissertations

This dissertation provides a comprehensive and evidentiary theoretical framework on the economic forces behind labor migration among Central and Eastern European (CEE) economies and the impact of said labor migration on European Union (EU) economies. Specifically, this dissertation limits the scope of its discussion as to the nature of macroeconomic effects of CEE migration to the selected destination countries: of the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. Labor flows between the EU and the CEE region seem to be a response to poorly functioning labor markets, insufficient productive capital, a relatively low quality of life, and an increasing …

Fuzziness And Bayesian Analysis In Engineering, Matthias Stein, Michael Beer, Vladik Kreinovich Dec 2013

Fuzziness And Bayesian Analysis In Engineering, Matthias Stein, Michael Beer, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

An engineering analysis requires a realistic quantification of all input information. The amount and quality of the available information dictates the uncertainty model and its associated quantification concept. For inconsistent information, a distinction between probabilistic and non-probabilistic characteristics is beneficial. In this distinction, uncertainty refers to probabilistic characteristics and non-probabilistic characteristics are summarized as imprecision. When uncertainty and imprecision occur simultaneously, the uncertainty model fuzzy randomness appears useful. In a Bayesian approach the fuzzy probabilistic model provides the opportunity to take account of imprecision in data and in prior expert knowledge. The Bayesian approach ex-tended to inconsistent information is demonstrated …

Avid Fan’S Impact On Casual Fans, Cory Law Dec 2013

Avid Fan’S Impact On Casual Fans, Cory Law

Sport Management Undergraduate

In lieu of an abstract, here is the paper's first paragraph: The lifeline of the sporting industry is the fans that attend the games, purchase merchandise, consume media, and passionately follow their favorite team or sport. Sport organizations do whatever they can to attract fans to their games and entice them to buy more tickets, merchandise, concessions and consume more of their team through social media, visits to the team website, and following the team. A critical area for these sport franchises to examine is why fans attend sporting events and what makes them a loyal fan of a certain …

Socialization Tactics: Antecedents For Goal Interdependence And Newcomer Adjustment And Retention, Serena Changhong Lu, Dean Tjosvold Dec 2013

Socialization Tactics: Antecedents For Goal Interdependence And Newcomer Adjustment And Retention, Serena Changhong Lu, Dean Tjosvold

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School of Business

This study argues that Deutsch's theory of goal interdependence is useful to examine the dynamics of serial and investiture tactics on newcomer adjustment and retention in work team contexts. Structural equation results of interviews of specific incidents collected from one hundred and two newcomers support the hypothesized model that serial and investiture tactics used by teams promote cooperative goal interdependence and weaken competitive goal interdependence and independent goal relationship between newcomers and their teams. Cooperative goals were also found to promote positive attitudes and strong co-worker relationships whereas competitive and independent goals resulted in intentions to quit and low levels …

S1nn Gmbh & Co. Kg (Automobile Connectivity Module 1.1), Tyler Alexander Ball

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

The results of this report show how when diagnostics were run on the Connectivity Module 1.1, the problems discovered such as potential short-circuiting, 90-degree copper tracing angles, and components overheating/tombstoning were addressed. By using the method of “DMAIC,” which stands for Design, Measure, Analyze, Implement, Control, successful corrections were made. In the first design of the Printed Circuit Board (PCB), 1454 critical issues were found. With the newly designed PCB’s modifications being implemented, only 12 critical issues remained, which were later addressed and corrected. The results from this report are a functional Automobile Connectivity Module 1.1.

Urban Watershed Services For Improved Ecosystem Management And Risk Reduction, Assessment Methods And Policy Instruments: State Of The Art, Yaella Depietri, Lorenzo Guadagno, Margaretha Breil

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Under scenarios of increasing unplanned urban expansion, environmental degradation and hazard exposure, the vulnerability of urban populations, especially of their poorer segments, needs to be tackled through integrated economic, social and environmental solutions. Basing our analysis on the concept of ecosystem services, we suggest that urban areas would benefit from a shift in perspective towards a more regional approach, which recognizes them as one of many interconnected elements that interact at the watershed level. By integrating an ecosystem approach into the management of water-related services, urban management policies can take a first step towards fostering an improvement of the health …
