Comparing Sediment Equilibrium Partitioning And Passive Sampling Techniques To Estimate Benthic Biota Pcdd/F Concentrations In Newark Bay, New Jersey (U.S.A.), Carey L. Friedman, Rainer Lohmann
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Sediment and polyethylene sampler-based estimates of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin/dibenzofuran (PCDD/F) concentrations in Newark Bay, New Jersey (USA) benthic biota were compared. Biota concentrations based on sediment were estimated using an organic carbon (OC)-water partitioning model and an OC and black carbon (BC)-water dual model. Biota concentrations based on polyethylene were estimated from samplers deployed in the Newark Bay water column and samplers immersed in a sediment/porewater slurry in the laboratory. Porewater samplers provided the best estimates of biota concentrations (within 3.1x), with best results achieved for deposit-feeders (within 1.6x). Polyethylene deployed in deep water also provided good estimates of …
Optimization And Spatial Queueing Models To Support Multi-Server Dispatching Policies With Multiple Servers Per Station, Sardar Ansari
Optimization And Spatial Queueing Models To Support Multi-Server Dispatching Policies With Multiple Servers Per Station, Sardar Ansari
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, we propose novel optimization and spatial queueing models that expand the currently existing methods by allowing multiple servers to be located at the same station and multiple servers to be dispatched to a single call. In particular, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is introduced that determines how to locate and dispatch ambulances such that the coverage level is maximized. The model allows multiple servers to be located at the same station and balances the workload among them while maintaining contiguous first priority response districts. We also propose an extension to the approximate Hypercube queueing model …
Hybrid Pet/Mri Nanoparticle Development And Multi-Modal Imaging, David Hoffman
Hybrid Pet/Mri Nanoparticle Development And Multi-Modal Imaging, David Hoffman
Theses and Dissertations
The development of hybrid PET/MRI imaging systems needs to be paralleled with the development of a hybrid intrinsic PET/MRI probes. The aim of this work was to develop and validate a novel radio-superparamagnetic nanoparticle (r-SPNP) for hybrid PET/MRI imaging. This was achieved with the synthesis of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) that intrinsically incorporated 59Fe and manganese iron oxide nanoparticles (MIONs) that intrinsically incorporated 52Mn. Both [59Fe]-SPIONs and [52Mn]-MIONs were produced through thermal decomposition synthesis. The physiochemical characteristics of the r-SPNPs were assessed with TEM, DLS, and zeta-potential measurements, as well as in imaging phantom studies. The [59Fe]-SPIONs were evaluated …

Reichenbachia, Imperial Edition: Rediscovering Frederick Sander’S Late-Victorian Masterpiece Of Botanical Art, Erica Borey
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis project examines the history, provenance, and contemporary treatment of a rare Imperial Edition of Frederick Sander’s print collection Reichenbachia, Orchids Illustrated and Described, a high-quality orchid compendium dating to the late-nineteenth century. A local philanthropist loaned the Imperial Edition Reichenbachia, number 86 of 100 to Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in 2011 on a long-term basis as a promised donation. Research into the origins of this collection involves several disparate historical topics, including the Victorian period of “orchid mania,” imperialist business practices, and chromolithographic printmaking. Discussion of the transition of this collection into a museum art collection covers its …

Assessing “Dangerous Climate Change”: Required Reduction Of Carbon Emissions To Protect Young People, Future Generations And Nature, J Hansen, P Kharecha, M Sato, V Masson-Delmotte, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
We assess climate impacts of global warming using ongoing observations and paleoclimate data. We use Earth's measured energy imbalance, paleoclimate data, and simple representations of the global carbon cycle and temperature to define emission reductions needed to stabilize climate and avoid potentially disastrous impacts on today's young people, future generations, and nature. A cumulative industrial-era limit of ∼500 GtC fossil fuel emissions and 100 GtC storage in the biosphere and soil would keep climate close to the Holocene range to which humanity and other species are adapted. Cumulative emissions of ∼1000 GtC, sometimes associated with 2°C global warming, would spur …
Work Stress Reactivity And Health Outcomes: A Study Of Nurses, Laurie Marie Jacobs
Work Stress Reactivity And Health Outcomes: A Study Of Nurses, Laurie Marie Jacobs
Dissertations and Theses
Negative events encountered in daily life influence individual well-being. Individuals vary in their reactivity to these events, the extent to which they are behaviorally, physiologically, and psychologically influenced by them (Almeida, 2005; Neupert, Almeida, & Charles, 2007). Reactivity to events in the form of changes in health behavior could represent either an attempt at coping (Cooper, Frone, Russell, & Mudar, 1995) or a stressor-related failure of self-control (Muraven & Baumeister, 2000). Such changes in behavior could have later effects on health.
Although a great deal of attention has been paid to both the immediate and long-term effects of stressors on …

Reflections On Campus Planning: Lessons For Practice, William Riggs
Reflections On Campus Planning: Lessons For Practice, William Riggs
City and Regional Planning
Planning is a diverse field with many different areas of professional practice. Campus planning, as opposed to traditional city planning, is one of these areas—different than traditional municipal, and having a unique requirements that are framed by jurisdictional, environmental, and physical planning needs of the respective institution.
Based on my experience in this role, planners need a flexible skillset that moves beyond the traditional role of processing permits and crafting zoning codes. They need to be deep thinkers and leaders who can adapt to changing situations and understand nuanced bureaucracy. By taking advantage of it, as well as other practical …

Estimating Norms Of Commutators [Dataset], Terry A. Loring, Freddy Vides
Math and Statistics Datasets
We find estimates on the norm of a commutator of the form [f(x),y] in terms of the norm of [x,y], assuming that x and y are bounded linear operators on Hilbert space, with x normal and with spectrum within the domain of f. In particular we discuss |[x^2,y]| and |[x^{1/2},y]| for 0leq x leq 1. For larger values of delta = |[x,y]| we can rigorous calculate the best possible upper bound |[f(x),y]| leq eta_f(delta) for many f. In other cases we have conducted numerical experiments that strongly suggest that we have in many cases found the correct formula for the …

Integrated Theoretical And Computational Approaches To Study Hydrolysis And Aggregation Of Biomolecules, Mehmet Ozbil
Open Access Dissertations
In this thesis, we have focused on the following two projects: (1) mechanisms of peptide hydrolysis, and (2) aggregation of biomolecules. A plethora of theoretical and computational techniques; quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics, and molecular docking have been employed to accomplish the goals of these projects. The selective hydrolytic cleavage of the extremely stable peptide bond (-(O=)C-NH-) of peptides and proteins by enzymes and their analogues is required in a wide range of biological, biotechnological and industrial applications. In the first project, we have elucidated the mechanisms of peptide hydrolysis by non-metallic (beta secretase (BACE)) and metallic (insulin degrading enzyme (IDE) …

Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) is a strong candidate for aquaculture production growth in the United States. Demonstrated through research, the species meets many of the criteria for species selection. Research is needed to complete our knowledge of the nutritional requirements at different ages in order to develop cost-effective and environmentally-friendly diets. Our goal was to examine the nutritional requirements in terms of protein and energy for market size fish. Six diets were formulated to be isoenergetic (Gross energy GE= 21 kJ/g). The formulated GP/GE ratios were 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, and 25 g/MJ. Fish average weight was 260.8±21g at …
