Teaching Self: The Ambiguity Of Lived Experience In Classroom Discourse, Scott V. Gealy Dec 2013

Teaching Self: The Ambiguity Of Lived Experience In Classroom Discourse, Scott V. Gealy

Department of English: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Inspired by Paul Heilker’s notion of the essay as a form of exploration over argument, embodying an anti-scholastic and chrono-logical approach, and Candace Spigelman’s endorsement of experience as evidence in academic discourse, this thesis weaves memoir into more traditional scholarship in an effort to complicate the archetype of the effective teacher. Furthermore, the essay seeks to deconstruct conventional student, teacher, and cultural binaries with the help of the theoretical work of Deborah Britzman, Parker Palmer, Mikhail Bakhtin, Joy Ritchie and David Wilson and others, while using Scott Russell Sanders’ narrative essay “Under the Influence” as a mentor text for …

Polarization-Coupled Transport Behavior In Ultrathin Ferroelectric Heterostructures, Haidong Lu Dec 2013

Polarization-Coupled Transport Behavior In Ultrathin Ferroelectric Heterostructures, Haidong Lu

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Ferroelectric polarization-coupled resistive switching behavior in ferroelectric tunnel junctions (FTJs), the tunneling electroresistance (TER) effect, is a recently predicted new phenomenon, which attracts interest due to potential application in the next generation non-volatile ferroelectric random access memories (FeRAMs). In this dissertation, we demonstrate the TER effect in FTJ devices by means of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques. We have investigated several device configurations for enhancement of polarization stability and for demonstration of the resistive switching behavior: (i) using the SPM probe as a top electrode; (ii) using heterostructures with engineered interfacial atomic terminations; (iii) using metal electrodes; (iv) adding an …

Analgesic Tolerance Of Opioid Agonists In Mutant Mu-Opioid Receptors Expressed In Sensory Neurons Following Intrathecal Plasmid Gene Delivery, Guangwen Li, Fei Ma, Yanping Gu, Li-Yen Mae Huang Dec 2013

Analgesic Tolerance Of Opioid Agonists In Mutant Mu-Opioid Receptors Expressed In Sensory Neurons Following Intrathecal Plasmid Gene Delivery, Guangwen Li, Fei Ma, Yanping Gu, Li-Yen Mae Huang

Physiology Faculty Publications

Background: Phosphorylation sites in the C-terminus of mu-opioid receptors (MORs) are known to play critical roles in the receptor functions. Our understanding of their participation in opioid analgesia is mostly based on studies of opioid effects on mutant receptors expressed in in vitro preparations, including cell lines, isolated neurons and brain slices. The behavioral consequences of the mutation have not been fully explored due to the complexity in studies of mutant receptors in vivo. To facilitate the determination of the contribution of phosphorylation sites in MOR to opioid-induced analgesic behaviors, we expressed mutant and wild-type human MORs (hMORs) in sensory …

Transformation Of Stimulus Correlations By The Retina, Kristina D. Simmons, Jason Prentice, Gašper Tkačik, Jan Homann, Heather K. Yee, Stephanie E. Palmer, Philip C. Nelson, Vijay Balasubramanian

Publications and Research

Redundancies and correlations in the responses of sensory neurons may seem to waste neural resources, but they can also carry cues about structured stimuli and may help the brain to correct for response errors. To investigate the effect of stimulus structure on redundancy in retina, we measured simultaneous responses from populations of retinal ganglion cells presented with natural and artificial stimuli that varied greatly in correlation structure; these stimuli and recordings are publicly available online. Responding to spatio-temporally structured stimuli such as natural movies, pairs of ganglion cells were modestly more correlated than in response to white noise checkerboards, but …

What Factors Influence Wind Perceptions, Tatiana Stein Dec 2013

What Factors Influence Wind Perceptions, Tatiana Stein

Theses

Over the last decade, wind power has emerged as a possible source of energy and has attracted the attention of homeowners and policy makers worldwide. Many technological hurdles have been overcome in the last few years that make this technology feasible and economical. The United States has added more wind power than any other type of electric generation in 2012. Depending on the location, wind resources have shown to have the potential to offer 20% of the nation's electricity; a single, large wind turbine has the capacity to produce enough electricity to power 350 homes. Throughout the development of wind …

Igeneration: A Study In Challenge Based Learning At A Small Private University, Jodi A. Hift

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

Faculty-buy in is an essential component of successful technology integration processes at the Higher Education level. The goal of this case study was to assess the University faculty's role in the utilization of Challenge Based Learning while teaching undergraduate students. Did the University have the faculty's support and buy-in concerning the use of Challenge Based Learning as a campus-wide initiative? The perspectives of 16 full-time University faculty members enrolled in a Challenge Based Learning pilot study were explored at the beginning of the Challenge Based Learning pilot and then and were assessed again upon the completion of the pilot. The …

Asymptotic Multi-Layer Analysis Of Wind Over Unsteady Monochromatic Surface Waves, Shahrdad Sajjadi, Julian Hunt, Frederique Drullion Dec 2013

Asymptotic Multi-Layer Analysis Of Wind Over Unsteady Monochromatic Surface Waves, Shahrdad Sajjadi, Julian Hunt, Frederique Drullion

Publications

Asymptotic multi-layer analyses and computation of solutions for turbulent flows over steady and unsteady monochromatic surface wave are reviewed, in the limits of low turbulent stresses and small wave amplitude. The structure of the flow is defined in terms of asymptotically-matched thin-layers, namely the surface layer and a critical layer, whether it is ‘elevated’ or ‘immersed’, corresponding to its location above or within the surface layer. The results particularly demonstrate the physical importance of the singular flow features and physical implications of the elevated critical layer in the limit of the unsteadiness tending to zero. These agree with the variational …

Essays On Life Insurance And Healthcare Finance, Bryan P. Schmutz Dec 2013

Essays On Life Insurance And Healthcare Finance, Bryan P. Schmutz

Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three essays examining issues related to life insurance and healthcare finance. In the first essay, we examine how R&D spending is influenced by prior year cash flow and corporate market value using a panel data set of medical device companies over the period 1962 to 2008. We show that the recently enacted excise tax on medical devices will reduce R&D spending by approximately $4 billion leading to a minimum loss of $20 billion worth of human lives.

In the second essay, we use the repeated sales regression method to construct an index of viatical/life settlement returns …

Family Structures Of Homeless Men, Lauren Olson Dec 2013

Family Structures Of Homeless Men, Lauren Olson

Social Work Student Works

I spent the semester exploring the family structures of homeless men in Minneapolis through interviews and participant observation. Originally, I was curious if differences in family structures affected men before, during and after being in a state of homeless. Specifically, I asked men about their family situations growing up, as well as the families they've created as adults. Through interviews with informants I was hoping to discover connections between how family structures and relationships as a child affected their relationships today. By creating meaningful friendships with the homeless men and staff within in Minneapolis, I was able to make a …

The Role Of Sports Clubs In University Recruitment And Retention: A Mixed-Methods Case Study, Andrea R. Mcclymont Dec 2013

The Role Of Sports Clubs In University Recruitment And Retention: A Mixed-Methods Case Study, Andrea R. Mcclymont

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Opportunities for involvement on a college campus can have many positive effects on students. Additionally, opportunities for involvement can have positive implications for student recruitment and retention at a university. There are many ways for students to become involved during college through their campus recreation centers. Through these centers students can have the opportunity to participate in sport clubs. Although multiple studies have been conducted on the importance of student involvement, few studies focus specifically on student involvement in sport clubs. This study addressed six research questions: a) do freshmen student sport club participants have higher 1st term GPAs …

Forced Kinship, Lauren Leake Dec 2013

Forced Kinship, Lauren Leake

Theses and Dissertations

My oil paintings, glass works, and mixed media are abstract meditations on familial relationships and their boundaries. The interaction between colors and layers of pigment reference human interaction. I apply veils of colors, which obscure, alter, or blend into previous layers of color. These layers metaphorically reference how family relationships affect the person we are and influence who we become. I approach my oil paintings serially and often refer to them as sisters or a family. I often work on two or more canvases at a time allowing each painting to share palettes and a similar language of shapes. When …

Patient-Specific Modeling Of Adult Acquired Flatfoot Deformity Before And After Surgery, Edward Meade Spratley Dec 2013

Patient-Specific Modeling Of Adult Acquired Flatfoot Deformity Before And After Surgery, Edward Meade Spratley

Theses and Dissertations

The use of computational modeling is an increasingly commonplace technique for the investigation of biomechanics in intact and pathological musculoskeletal systems. Moreover, given the robust and repeatable nature of computer simulation and the prevalence of software techniques for accurate 3-D reconstructions of tissues, the predictive power of these models has increased dramatically. However, there are no patient-specific kinematic models whose function is dictated solely by physiologic soft-tissue constraints, articular shape and contact, and without idealized joint approximations. Moreover, very few models have attempted to predict surgical effects combined with postoperative validation of those predictions. Given this, it is not surprising …

Gay, Straight, Or Slightly Bent? The Interaction Of Leader Sexual Orientation And Gender On Leadership Evaluations, Fred George Macoukji Dec 2013

Gay, Straight, Or Slightly Bent? The Interaction Of Leader Sexual Orientation And Gender On Leadership Evaluations, Fred George Macoukji

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Abstract

Existing research has shown that gender stereotypes regarding characteristics of men and women influence others' perceptions of their fit with organizational roles, including leadership roles (cf. Eagly & Karau, 2002). However, little research has examined stereotypes regarding other demographic characteristics (e.g., race, sexual orientation) and how they may interact with gender stereotypes to influence leadership evaluations. The current study examined whether leader gender and sexual orientation interact to influence subordinates' evaluations of leader effectiveness, likability, and boss desirability using an experimental design. In addition to examining whether leader gender and sexual orientation interacted to predict leader evaluations, the present …
