Chemical Treatment Of Sludge Return Streams At The Maxson Wwtp, David James Hilgeman Dec 2013

Chemical Treatment Of Sludge Return Streams At The Maxson Wwtp, David James Hilgeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

During the treatment of wastewater, many by-products are produced. One ofthese by-products, the sludge return stream, is produced from the sludge digestion and dewatering process. This high strength wastewater is known as a return stream because it is often returned to the beginning of the treatment plant to be combined with the influent. Because of its high strength, it often has a significant impact on influent concentrations of organics and nutrients. The main focus of this work was to study chemical treatment ofthe return streams at the Maxson WWTP in order to reduce pollutant loading on theinfluent. Regarding this, several …

Effect Of Embedded Pd Microstructures On The Flat-Band-Voltage Operation Of Room Temperature Zno-Based Liquid Petroleum Gas Sensors, Ghusoon M. Ali, Cody V. Thompson, Ali K. Jasim, Isam M. Abdulbaki, James C. Moore Dec 2013

Effect Of Embedded Pd Microstructures On The Flat-Band-Voltage Operation Of Room Temperature Zno-Based Liquid Petroleum Gas Sensors, Ghusoon M. Ali, Cody V. Thompson, Ali K. Jasim, Isam M. Abdulbaki, James C. Moore

Chemistry

Three methods were used to fabricate ZnO-based room temperature liquid petroleum gas (LPG) sensors having interdigitated metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) structures. Specifically, devices with Pd Schottky contacts were fabricated with: (1) un-doped ZnO active layers; (2) Pd-doped ZnO active layers; and (3) un-doped ZnO layers on top of Pd microstructure arrays. All ZnO films were grown on p-type Si(111) substrates by the sol-gel method. For devices incorporating a microstructure array, Pd islands were first grown on the substrate by thermal evaporation using a 100 μm mesh shadow mask. We have estimated the sensitivity of the sensors for applied voltage from -5 to …

Reason Within The Bounds Of Religion: Assmann, Cohen, And The Possibilities Of Monotheism, Robert Erlewine Dec 2013

Reason Within The Bounds Of Religion: Assmann, Cohen, And The Possibilities Of Monotheism, Robert Erlewine

Scholarship

Recent years have witnessed many actions, often violent and xenophobic, explicitly rooted in monotheistic intolerance. Perhaps, then, it should not be surprising that many secular-minded critics view monotheistic religions as not much more than intractable problems for democratic societies. Indeed, for such critics, the respective ages and histories of these traditions are not to be esteemed. Rather, these religions are simply primitive, and so they require domestication (or annihilation) by liberal values. Looking around the world today, one often wonders if it is even possible for modern sensibilities to be reconciled, or even to coexist, with the Abrahamic monotheisms and …

The Monumental Province: Asia And The Temples Of The Roman Empire, Andrew Findley Dec 2013

The Monumental Province: Asia And The Temples Of The Roman Empire, Andrew Findley

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation presents a study of monumental temples built or appropriated by the Romans in the province of Asia from the late 1st to the middle 2nd century AD. The practice of constructing extraordinarily large temples in Asia originated during the Hellenistic period but ceased for several centuries until the Roman Empire took control of the region and began to build monumental temples in the province. This study focuses on five temples that best represent the Roman relationship with monumental temple building in the province of Asia: the Wadi B Temple at Sardis, the Vetters Temple at Ephesus, the Red …

Impact Of Noise On Molecular Network Inference, Radhakrishnan Nagarajan, Marco Scutari Dec 2013

Impact Of Noise On Molecular Network Inference, Radhakrishnan Nagarajan, Marco Scutari

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

Molecular entities work in concert as a system and mediate phenotypic outcomes and disease states. There has been recent interest in modelling the associations between molecular entities from their observed expression profiles as networks using a battery of algorithms. These networks have proven to be useful abstractions of the underlying pathways and signalling mechanisms. Noise is ubiquitous in molecular data and can have a pronounced effect on the inferred network. Noise can be an outcome of several factors including: inherent stochastic mechanisms at the molecular level, variation in the abundance of molecules, heterogeneity, sensitivity of the biological assay or measurement …

Community College Pathways: A Narrative Inquiry With One Student, Philip Ross Dec 2013

Community College Pathways: A Narrative Inquiry With One Student, Philip Ross

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Developmental education is a field that has a long history in higher education in the United States. Some have called it remedial education, but the field promotes a pedagogy that addresses what it claims is broader in the development of the whole person, his or cognitive, social/behavioral, and vocational growth. This study, set in a Midwestern community college, acknowledges the absence of recognition of the role of developmental education in higher education and responds to a lack of qualitative research in this area. A six-month study using narrative inquiry results in the documentary Crossroads Community College: Flying Solo and following …

Making Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii A Better Model Organism: Tackling The Inefficiency Of Nuclear Transgene Expression And Improving Methods For The Generation And Characterization Of Insertional Mutant Libraries, Thomas M. Plucinak Dec 2013

Making Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii A Better Model Organism: Tackling The Inefficiency Of Nuclear Transgene Expression And Improving Methods For The Generation And Characterization Of Insertional Mutant Libraries, Thomas M. Plucinak

Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The green algal species Chlamydomonas reinhardtii possesses many beneficial features that have made it a useful model organism for many decades. Many types of experimentation however are difficult to conduct with this organism due to the relative under-development of genetic tools available for use. Tasks such as transgene expression, overexpression of proteins of interest (POIs) or site specific genomic modification that are routine in other more facile microbial model organisms such as Escherichia coli and yeast are difficult to accomplish in C. reinhardtii. The second chapter of this thesis describes the development of a novel nuclear transgene expression system …

Studies On The Regulation Of Fgf21 Gene Expression By (R)-Α-Lipoic Acid: Mechanistic Insight Into The Lipid Lowering Properties Of A Dithiol Dietary Molecule, Xiaohua Yi Dec 2013

Studies On The Regulation Of Fgf21 Gene Expression By (R)-Α-Lipoic Acid: Mechanistic Insight Into The Lipid Lowering Properties Of A Dithiol Dietary Molecule, Xiaohua Yi

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Controlling blood lipids is a major public health challenge of our time. The pleiotropic hormone-like polypeptide fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) was recently recognized as a potent modulator of lipid and glucose metabolism and a promising treatment strategy for obesity related metabolic disorders, including dyslipidemia. A cost effective and practical alternative to the administration of recombinant FGF21 is to stimulate endogenous FGF21 production through diet. Our research identified (R)-a-lipoic acid (LA), a naturally occurring enzyme cofactor and dietary molecule found in green leafy vegetable and red meat, as an inducer of FGF21 expression. LA stimulated FGF21 production, demonstrated by a …

Biotinylation Of The C-Myc Promoter Binding Protein Mbp-1 Decreases C-Myc And Cox-2 Expression In Mammary Carcinoma Mcf-7 Cells, Jie Zhou Dec 2013

Biotinylation Of The C-Myc Promoter Binding Protein Mbp-1 Decreases C-Myc And Cox-2 Expression In Mammary Carcinoma Mcf-7 Cells, Jie Zhou

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Biotin feeding in a Balb/c mouse model of breast cancer suggest that the tumor load is ~100% greater in biotin-deficient mice compared with biotin-sufficient controls, and that the increase is associated with metastasis rather than new tumors. The oncogenes c-Myc and COX-2 are implicated in cancer metastasis, and their expressions are repressed by binding of MBP-1 to the promoter. Mass spectrometry studies, designed to discover novel biotin-containing proteins, suggest that lysine residues K10 and K12 in the c-Myc promoter binding protein (MBP-1) contains covalently bound biotin (MBP-1bio). We hypothesized that biotinylation of MBP-1 increases the binding of MBP-1 to the …
