A "Time-Conscious" Christmas Carol, Jack Lundquist Dec 2013

A "Time-Conscious" Christmas Carol, Jack Lundquist

Theses and Dissertations

Shortly after Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol was released in 1843, a tradition of adaptation began which has continued seemingly unabated to the present day. Consequently, the tale has become so widely known that one is arguably as likely to have first encountered the iconic miser Scrooge through any number of audio-visual adaptations as through the original work itself. Significant critical attention has been paid to the nature of Scrooge's drastic change from miser to philanthropist. Many would argue that the change, happening both literally and figuratively overnight, is not representative of a genuine psychological transformation. On Christmas day, 2010, …

Intercalibration Of Quikscat And Oscat Land Backscatter, John Colin Barrus Dec 2013

Intercalibration Of Quikscat And Oscat Land Backscatter, John Colin Barrus

Theses and Dissertations

The Ku-band SeaWinds-on-QuikSCAT scatterometer (QuikSCAT) operated continuously from 1999 to 2009. Though its primary mission was to estimate global ocean winds, QuikSCAT has proven useful in a variety of geophysical studies using land backscatter measurements. The end of the primary QuikSCAT mission in 2009 has prompted interest for continuing the QuikSCAT land dataset with other scatterometers. The Oceansat-2 scatterometer (OSCAT), launched in 2009, is a viable candidate for continuing the QuikSCAT time series because of the similarities of both sensors in function and design. An important difference in the sensors is that they operate at slightly different incidence angles. Continuing …

Capillary Channel Flow Experiments Aboard The International Space Station, Michael Conrath, P. J. Canfield, P. M. Bronowicki, Michael E. Dreyer, Mark M. Weislogel, A. Grah Dec 2013

Capillary Channel Flow Experiments Aboard The International Space Station, Michael Conrath, P. J. Canfield, P. M. Bronowicki, Michael E. Dreyer, Mark M. Weislogel, A. Grah

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the near-weightless environment of orbiting spacecraft capillary forces dominate interfacial flow phenomena over unearthly large length scales. In current experiments aboard the International Space Station, partially open channels are being investigated to determine critical flow rate-limiting conditions above which the free surface collapses ingesting bubbles. Without the natural passive phase separating qualities of buoyancy, such ingested bubbles can in turn wreak havoc on the fluid transport systems of spacecraft. The flow channels under investigation represent geometric families of conduits with applications to liquid propellant acquisition, thermal fluids circulation, and water processing for life support. Present and near future experiments …

Role Of Nitrogen Defects In Nitrogen-Doped Carbon For Catalyst Support And Electric Double-Layer Capacitor, Sujan Shrestha Dec 2013

Role Of Nitrogen Defects In Nitrogen-Doped Carbon For Catalyst Support And Electric Double-Layer Capacitor, Sujan Shrestha

Doctoral Dissertations

Electrochemical applications of carbon are wide and varied. They are used as electrodes for batteries, capacitors and proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). This is possible due to their excellent electrical conductivity, variable nanostructure and cost-effectiveness. Besides these properties, physicochemical properties such as microstructure and surface chemistry play a significant role in the performance of carbon as electrodes in these applications. In supercapacitors or ultracapacitors, surface oxygen functionalities can increase capacitance due to non-faradaic reactions between redox couples such as quinine and hydroquinone while in PEMFCs, surface functionalities can determine catalyst size distribution and dispersion. However, surface oxygen functionalities also …

Extending The Shelf-Life Of Lyophilized Protein Formulations: Amino Acids As Stabilizers And Early Detection Of Amorphous Phase Separation, Kelly M. Forney-Stevens

Doctoral Dissertations

Lyophilized protein pharmaceuticals are not infinitely stable and have a limited shelf-life often necessitating refrigeration. Excipients are added to protect the product during both processing and storage; however, the mechanisms of stabilization are still not fully understood. The goal of this research was to better understand critical factors in stabilization of dried proteins, such that long-term, ambient-temperature storage can be achieved. There were two main objectives:

1) Investigate amino acids as excipients to potentially extend the shelf-life of lyophilized proteins.

2) Refine a method for detection of amorphous-amorphous phase separation to better assess potential long-term stabilization issues.

First, the stability …

Lightning Strikes Twice: An Examination Of The Political Factors Associated With State-Level Death Sentences And Executions In The United States, 1930-2012, Ethan Christopher Amidon

Dissertations

Over the course of the last 50 years, scholars have emphasized the role that political processes play in shaping the nature of capital punishment practices. Empirical studies that have examined the relationship between political factors and capital punishment have attributed variation in the imposition of death sentences and the execution of offenders across jurisdictions in the United States to the politicization of criminal justice policies and practices and the shift in public sentiment towards more punitive ideologies that began in the 1970s. Even though historians have argued that capital punishment practices have always been shaped by political considerations, empirical research …

An Exploration Of Threatened Harm As A Type Of Maltreatment And Its Relation To Recurrence Of Maltreatment, Roxann Mcneish

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

There were no studies found in the literature that primarily focused on threatened harm as type of maltreatment. This study utilized Florida's child welfare administrative data to explore threatened harm as a type of maltreatment, particularly as a predictor of recurrence of maltreatment within six and 12 months for children who had a verified report of maltreatment in FY2005-2006. Threatened harm was examined in three ways; when it was reported as the only maltreatment, the initial maltreatment, and in situations where there was a prior report. The most prevalent acts of threatened harm were examined separately. It was examined as …
