Carbon Fluxes In Karst Aquifers: Sources, Sinks, And The Effect Of Storm Flow, William B. White Dec 2013

Carbon Fluxes In Karst Aquifers: Sources, Sinks, And The Effect Of Storm Flow, William B. White

KIP Articles

An effective carbon loading can be calculated from measured alkalinity and pH of karst waters. The carbon loading is independent of the degree of saturation of the water and does not depend on the water being in equilibrium with the carbonate wall rock. A substantial data base of spring water analyses accumulated by students over the past 40 years has been used to probe the CO2 generation, transport, and storage in a variety of drainage basins that feed karst springs. Carbon loading in the water exiting karst drainage basins depends on the rate of CO2 generation in the soils of …

New Hampshire Children In Need Of Services: Impacts Of 2011 Legislative Changes To Chins, Lisa Speropolous, Barbara Wauchope

Carsey Publications

Using administrative data from state and local agencies and data from interviews with CHINS professionals, this brief provides an overview of participation in the Children in Need of Services (CHINS) program before and after the change in the law in September 2011 but before funding returned in 2013. Specifically, it examines changes in CHINS petitions filed, children served, and services provided to children and their families in the state. Authors Lisa Speropolous and Barbara Wauchope present the study as an example of the impact that state fiscal policy can have on the most vulnerable of New Hampshire’s populations.

Cultural Competence Integration In The Nursing Curriculum, Boniface C. Stegman

Dissertations

With an increasingly diverse population, it is important to ensure that graduates of nursing programs are able to deliver culturally competent care (Krainovich-Miller et al., 2008; Allen, 2010). This study was undertaken to address this call to include cultural competence integration into nursing curriculum. The purpose of this study was to discover evidence of cultural competence integration in the nursing curriculum as perceived by faculty and students in a baccalaureate nursing program. This study addressed the following research questions: a) Does the undergraduate nursing curriculum integrate cultural competence?, b) Do the undergraduate nursing faculty perceive cultural competence content in the …

Lgbt Homeless Youth In Boston, Massachusetts: Experiences Regarding Resources And Potential Barriers, Brittney Connery

Honors Program Theses and Projects

LGBT youth are at an escalated risk of leaving home, mental health concerns, victimization, substance abuse, and risky sexual behavior. However, research shows a lack of LGBT-specific resources. This raises concern as LGBT youth comprise 20 to 40 percent of homeless youth – disproportionate to the general youth population which is only 10 percent LGBT. The purpose of this research was to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of LGBT homeless youth in Boston, Massachusetts regarding their use of resources and any potential barriers they may face. Furthermore, this study examined whether or not current resources are safe, welcoming …

Comparison Of Odonata Populations In Natural And Constructed Emergent Wetlands In The Bluegrass Region Of Kentucky, Brittany Ann Brookshire Miss Dec 2013

Comparison Of Odonata Populations In Natural And Constructed Emergent Wetlands In The Bluegrass Region Of Kentucky, Brittany Ann Brookshire Miss

Honors Theses

With the degradation and destruction of many natural wetlands in Kentucky, there are high incentives to look at the remaining natural wetlands and the new artificial wetlands that are beginning to become prevalent among biologists. Wetlands are important to dragonfly populations just as dragonflies are vital to wetland function. In my study I looked at the fluctuation in Odonata (dragonfly and damselfly) populations at ten artificial wetlands and ten natural wetlands in the Inner Bluegrass region of Kentucky. In my study the dragonfly populations were monitored based on Shannon and Simpson's diversity, Species richness, and number of individual and species …

Pleading Innocents: Laboratory Evidence Of Plea Bargaining's Innocence Problem, Vanessa A. Edkins, Lucian E. Dervan Dec 2013

Pleading Innocents: Laboratory Evidence Of Plea Bargaining's Innocence Problem, Vanessa A. Edkins, Lucian E. Dervan

Psychology Faculty Publications

We investigated plea bargaining by making students actually guilty or innocent of a cheating offense and varying the sentence that they would face if found ‘guilty’ by a review board. As hypothesized, guilty students were more likely than innocent students to accept a plea deal (i.e., admit guilt and lose credit; akin to accepting a sentence of probation) (Chi-square=8.63, p<.01) but we did not find an effect of sentence severity. Innocent students, though not as likely to plead as guilty students, showed an overall preference (56% across conditions) for accepting a plea deal. Implications and future directions are discussed.

Evolution Of The Superconductivity Dome In The Two-Dimensional Hubbard Model, K. S. Chen, Z. Y. Meng, S. X. Yang, T. Pruschke, J. Moreno, M. Jarrell

Faculty Publications

In a recent publication, we identified a line of Lifshitz transition points separating the Fermi liquid and pseudogap regions in the hole-doped two-dimensional Hubbard model. Here, we extend the study to further determine the superconducting transition temperature in the phase diagram. By means of large-scale dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we are able to identify the evolution of the d-wave superconducting dome in the hole-dope side of the phase diagram, with next-nearest-neighbor hopping (t′), chemical potential, and temperature as control parameters. To obtain the superconducting transition temperature Tc, we employ two-particle measurements of the pairing susceptibilities. As t′ goes …

This report addresses the question: What factors have the strongest impact on communal and individual well-being in different neighborhoods in McLean County? It is one part of the larger United Way of McLean County Community Assessment 2014, which will evaluate the assets and needs of McLean County by focusing on respondents’ experiences receiving health and human services. Our findings are based on data from five key informant interviews and four focus groups. This information was collected from four geographically and economically distinct neighborhoods: rural Lexington, East Bloomington, Normal, and West Bloomington. Common themes that emerged from these sessions are: the …

Uncovering The Deeply Embedded Active Galactic Nucleus Activity In The Nuclear Regions Of The Interacting Galaxy Arp 299, A Alonso-Herrero, Eric S. Perlman

Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Faculty Publications

We present mid-infrared (MIR) 8-13 μm spectroscopy of the nuclear regions of the interacting galaxy Arp 299 (IC 694+NGC 3690) obtained with CanariCam (CC) on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). The high angular resolution (∼0.″3-0.″6) of the data allows us to probe nuclear physical scales between 60 and 120 pc, which is a factor of 10 improvement over previous MIR spectroscopic observations of this system. The GTC/CC spectroscopy displays evidence of deeply embedded active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in both nuclei. The GTC/CC nuclear spectrum of NGC 3690/Arp 299-B1 can be explained as emission from AGN-heated dust in …

De Facto Parentage And The Rights Of Former Stepparents, Joanna L. Grossman

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Does a former stepfather have the right to custody or visitation of a stepchild he helped raise from birth? This question was recently answered by the Washington State Supreme Court, in In re Custody of B.M.H. The rights of non-parents to custody and visitation have been in flux in many states over the last decade, but perhaps nowhere as much as Washington State.
