Motivation And The Sat: What Factors Help Determine College Success Past Standardized Testing, Alexandra Vartanian

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects motivation plays in determining the success of a student in post secondary education. The relationship between high school GPA (HSGPA), SAT Scores, college GPA (CGPA), and motivation factors were examined. Motivation was measured on the Motivational Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) developed by Paul Pintrich and Elizabeth de Groot. Ninety-two participants responded to the survey. Results corroborated findings from previous research. SAT scores correlate with CGPA; relationships were also observed across several other factors, including HSGPA and CGPA, SAT and Motivation, and HSGPA and SAT scores.

Certain Agave Species Exhibit The Capability To Be Moderately Productive Under Conditions Of High Salt And Drought Stress, Steven J. Bergsten

Theses and Dissertations

Water availability and arable lands are increasingly limiting resources in many parts of the U.S., particularly in semi-arid and arid regions. As a means of addressing food and fuel demands associated with burgeoning population growth, highly productive and water-use efficient crops need to be identified. One potential crop, Agave, merits consideration and evaluation due to its putative capability to provide sustenance and energy despite growing in water-limited regions and on marginal soils. However, little is known regarding the productivity these succulent plants will have under growing conditions of the Southwest, where high concentrated saline soils are abundant, and water is …

The Performance Of Risk Management And Innovation In Construction Manager/General Contractor Delivery In Civil Construction Applications, Rebecca M. Owens Dec 2013

The Performance Of Risk Management And Innovation In Construction Manager/General Contractor Delivery In Civil Construction Applications, Rebecca M. Owens

Theses and Dissertations

Project teams that deliver high risk, complex projects in the civil construction industry need tools to enable successful delivery. Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) is an innovative alternate delivery method, providing one such a tool. CM/GC furnishes public agencies with an attractive option for delivering projects in a less adversarial and more constructive manner by involving the contractor during design. The sophisticated public owner does not have to relinquish control of the details of the design in order to accelerate the schedule or see the benefits of real-time cost estimating data. There are also significant cost and schedule benefits with not …

Publications and Research

Target 2 of the 2020 Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) calls for a comprehensive list of the world's threatened plant species. The lack of such a list is one of the greatest impediments to protecting the full complement of the world's plant species, and work to achieve this has been slow. An efficient system for identifying those species that are at risk of extinction could help to achieve this goal in a time frame sensitive to today's conservation needs. Two systems that efficiently use available data to assess conservation status were tested against a provisional International Union for Conservation …

The Effect Of Separating Ownership From Control On Corporate Leverage, Josephat Lotto Dec 2013

The Effect Of Separating Ownership From Control On Corporate Leverage, Josephat Lotto

Business Management Review

This paper aims to examine how corporate leverage is affected by the separation of ownership from control .Using data from a sample of 643 listed UK firms, the results show supportive evidence of a statistically significant positive relationship between the largest shareholder ' s ownership concentration and debt ratio. More importantly, the results of the paper show a statistically significant and positive relationship between control-wedge (deviation between control rights and cash flow rights) and the debt ratio confirming that control attracts controlling shareholders to extract private benefits. This finding offers directly evidence for the debt-increasing effect of the hypothesis formulated …

Success And The Balance Of Commitment And Time: Effects Of Perceived Time Management Control On College Student Performance, Ashley Twehues Dec 2013

Success And The Balance Of Commitment And Time: Effects Of Perceived Time Management Control On College Student Performance, Ashley Twehues

Honors Theses

This study explores how time management and the perception of control over time contribute to undergraduates success in college. Although students have good grades in college, they may not be able to achieve the desirable combination of a high GPA, extracurricular involvement and a career-related employment history. Students often become overwhelmed with the pressure to achieve this success, but lack the time management skills to balance everything. This paper explores how students best use their time in order to gain college success. Extant literature suggests that students who are more involved on-campus with academics, extracurricular activities and employment opportunities achieve …

Implementation Plan For Emr And Beyond, Lori Katterhagen Dec 2013

Implementation Plan For Emr And Beyond, Lori Katterhagen

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Change is never easy for anyone, but how we implement change can make the difference in how an innovation is accepted. Over the last two years, a small community hospital in California has introduced a new electronic medical record (EMR) to meet the requirements of meaningful use mandated by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) for all hospitals across the United States. EMRs are expected to improve quality in many areas, especially to improve outcomes, while safely reducing costs (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2012). Adoption of EMR’s is not optional, if facilities want to avoid penalties …

Lean Management Principles To The Creation Of Postpartum Hemorrhage Care Bundles, Bethan Faulkner Dec 2013

Lean Management Principles To The Creation Of Postpartum Hemorrhage Care Bundles, Bethan Faulkner

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is the number one cause of pregnancy-related death in the US. The Maternity local improvement team (LIT), co-led by an Obstetrician and Board Certified Clinical Nurse Specialist found that each month the maternity unit averages 40 PPHs with 1-2 resulting in an emergency. Over a 6-month period, the LIT decreased response time for emergencies significantly. Supply retrieval time decreased by 99.9%, MD response time decreased by 81%, and Family Centered Care increased by 100%. They recently turned their attention to prevention. Given the lack of literature on preventing PPH in postpartum units, the team developed a PPH …

Improving Value Based Purchasing Through The Implementation Of The Clinical Nurse Leader Role: The Chief Nursing Officer’S Case For Change, Leanne M. Hunstock

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

The healthcare industry is focused on the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the payment reform package from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the development of Accountable Care Organizations. The decisions, behaviors, and practices of medical and clinical staff directly impact patient care, quality, and subsequently cost and reimbursement. The imperative to balance quality and patient safety with cost effectiveness requires a complex orchestration of all the elements of care within the clinical microsystem. A priority is to support and enable bedside nurses’ daily practice, priorities, and decision-making. This can be accomplished through the implementation of the Clinical …

Innovative Approach To New Nurse Residency, Meaningful Use And Health Care Reform, Pamela V. Stanley

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

The project’s aim was to examine the financial impact of replacing registered nurse (RN) travelers, RN registry and RN overtime with new graduate RNs. Newly graduated RNs are often viewed by hospital administrators as a more costly staffing resource. This project contributes knowledge regarding the potential cost savings with the utilization of a centralized float pool incorporating new graduates. In addition, it contributes a novel idea for reducing organizational costs of implementing an electronic medical record with the utilization of new graduates as super users.

A new graduate program, which incorporated the use of a formal preceptor and mentoring program, …

The Design, Implementation And Evaluation Of A Technology Solution To Improve Discharge Planning Communication In A Complex Patient Population, Susan M. Manfredi Dec 2013

The Design, Implementation And Evaluation Of A Technology Solution To Improve Discharge Planning Communication In A Complex Patient Population, Susan M. Manfredi

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Unnecessary delays in discharge planning can extend the length of stay (LOS) and add non-reimbursable days for socially and medically complex patients thereby increasing the financial burden to healthcare organizations. The literature supports enhanced discharge communication strategies and the use of checklists to facilitate safe and timely discharges. Following root cause analyses of significant discharge delays, one hospital identified gaps in communication as key precursors associated with discharge planning breakdown when discharging patients to skilled nursing facilities. Review of these events demonstrated the need for concurrent communication strategies between multidisciplinary care team members in planning for complex discharges.

Following a …

Transforming The Journey For Newly Licensed Registered Nurses: A Community Based Transition-To-Practice Program In Ambulatory Care Settings, Cathryn A. Halford Dnp Dec 2013

Transforming The Journey For Newly Licensed Registered Nurses: A Community Based Transition-To-Practice Program In Ambulatory Care Settings, Cathryn A. Halford Dnp

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Abstract

In response to the job shortage for newly licensed registered nurses (RNs), transition to practice and residency programs have been established in many areas of the country including the San Francisco Bay Area. The programs were designed as demonstration projects to assist new graduates by increasing their competence, confidence, and skills, and their employability. Evidence from new graduate programs suggests that the programs provide an important bridge that is necessary for the critical transition from classroom to clinical practice and from newly licensed RN to qualified nursing professional. The University of San Francisco (USF)

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have been linked to extreme core-collapse supernovae from massive stars. Gravitational waves (GW) offer a probe of the physics behind long GRBs. We investigate models of long-lived (∼10-1000 s) GW emission associated with the accretion disk of a collapsed star or with its protoneutron star remnant. Using data from LIGO's fifth science run, and GRB triggers from the Swift experiment, we perform a search for unmodeled long-lived GW transients. Finding no evidence of GW emission, we place 90% confidence-level upper limits on the GW fluence at Earth from long GRBs for three waveforms inspired by a …

Mobile Information Literacy: Supporting Students’ Research And Information Needs In A Mobile World, Stefanie Havelka Dec 2013

Mobile Information Literacy: Supporting Students’ Research And Information Needs In A Mobile World, Stefanie Havelka

Publications and Research

Mobile devices have changed everyday life and they have had a great impact in higher education. This article describes a pilot project in which an academic librarian at Lehman College, City University of New York, taught information literacy exclusively via mobile devices. The concept of mobile information literacy is also reviewed, and its role in current and future teaching practices is evaluated. Lessons learned from this project tell us that mobile information literacy, albeit in its infancy, could play an essential part in students’ learning, and therefore academic librarians could incorporate it as part of their practice.

An Investigation Of Groundwater Age At The Shiprock, Nm Umtrca Site, Bryan Lawlis

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Shiprock Disposal Site is located in Shiprock, NM and was the site of the former Navajo Mill, a uranium and vanadium ore processing facility. The site occupies approximately 230 acres on a terrace overlooking the San Juan River and its adjacent flood plain. Uranium and Vanadium were extracted from ores mined from various locations from 1954 through 1968. The contaminants of this leaching process percolated into the groundwater on the terrace and the floodplain. The remediation of the Navajo mill site was recommended by the EPA in 1974. The Department of Energy (DOE) completed the Shiprock Uranium Mill Tailings …

Learning To Teach Mathematics And To Analyze Teaching Effectiveness: Evidence From A Video- And Practice-Based Pre-Service Course, Rossella Santagata, Cathery Yeh

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Although emerging consensus exists that practice-based approaches to teacher preparation assist in closing the distance between university coursework and fieldwork experiences and in assuring that future teachers learn to implement innovative research-based instructional strategies, little empirical research has investigated teacher learning from this approach. This study examines the impact of a video- and practice-based course on prospective teachers’ mathematics classroom practices and analysis of their own teaching. Two groups of elementary prospective teachers participated in the study—one attended the course and one did not. Findings reveal that the course assisted participants in making student thinking visible and in pursuing it …
