Spatial Analysis Of Air Velocity Distribution As Affected By House Size And Design In Commercial Broiler Production Facilities, Brian David Luck
Spatial Analysis Of Air Velocity Distribution As Affected By House Size And Design In Commercial Broiler Production Facilities, Brian David Luck
Theses and Dissertations
Tunnel ventilation is the design practice of placing exhaust fans and air inlets on opposite ends of animal production facilities and moving air through the building via negative pressure. Increasing air velocity within tunnel ventilated broiler production facilities increases sensible cooling and reduces the need for latent cooling (panting), which improves production efficiency. An air velocity measurement system was developed and measurement density analysis for quantifying air velocity distribution was performed in a 12.19 x 121.9 m commercial broiler production facility. Results showed that axial measurement distances of 3.05 m and 40 measurement points per cross-section produced the most descriptive …
Time-Averaged Surrogate Modeling For Small Scale Propellers Based On High-Fidelity Cfd Simulations, Joseph Ray Carroll
Time-Averaged Surrogate Modeling For Small Scale Propellers Based On High-Fidelity Cfd Simulations, Joseph Ray Carroll
Theses and Dissertations
Many Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (SUAV) are driven by small scale, fixed blade propellers. The flow produced by the propeller, known as the propeller slipstream, can have significant impact on SUAV aerodynamics. In the design and analysis process for SUAVs, numerous Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations of the coupled aircraft and propeller are often conducted which require a time-averaged, steady-state approximation of the propeller for computational efficiency. Most steady-state propeller models apply an actuator disk of momentum sources to model the thrust and swirl imparted to the flow field by a propeller. These momentum source models are based on simplified …

Determining A Developmental Window For The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Ultrasonic Vo, Hannah Duffy
Determining A Developmental Window For The Effect Of Polychlorinated Biphenyl (Pcb) On Ultrasonic Vo, Hannah Duffy
Honors Projects
Commercial manufacturing and widespread use of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) in the United States has left lasting negative effects today. These persistent contaminants continue to bioaccumulate in the food web because of their stable structure, long half-life, and high lipophilicity. Adding PCB to the diet of Sprague-Dawley rats during pregnancy and lactation alters the thyroid status of offspring, and the behavior of the dams and pups. To determine a critical period or “window†of development with the greatest impact of PCB exposure of females on offspring fitness, female Sprague-Dawley rats were mated and fed PCB diet (25 ppm PCB 47 and …

How Creative Professional Service Firms Internationalize: A Business Model Portfolio Approach, Deirdre Mcquillan, Pamela Sharkey Scott, Vincent Mangematin
How Creative Professional Service Firms Internationalize: A Business Model Portfolio Approach, Deirdre Mcquillan, Pamela Sharkey Scott, Vincent Mangematin
Conference Papers
Traditional theory of firm internationalization assumes all firms are homogeneous in their approach to managing uncertainties and implementing business strategies when internationalizing. A business model portfolio approach articulates a more complex process and suggests that firms adopt a portfolio of business models to balance uncertainties. Combining these two perspectives, this multiple case study research design explores how creative professional service firms (creative PSFs) internationalize. Creative PSFs such as architects are embedded in their local cultures, operating at the intersection of business and art. Our study reveals the complexities of creative PSF internationalization, showing that in contrast to existing explanations, multiple …

Diffusion Tensor Imaging In Hiv And Hepatitis C Coinfection, Jodi Michelle Heaps
Dissertations
Previous studies have demonstrated that infection with both human immune deficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C (HCV) is associated with impaired cognitive function. It is unclear whether co-infection is associated with neuroimaging markers of brain dysfunction. The purpose of the present study was to compare HIV+ individuals, HIV/HCV+ individuals, and seronegative controls using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to assess the microstructural integrity of white matter tissue. Methods: Twenty-five HIV+ patients, 25 HIV/HCV+ patients, and 25 seronegative controls matched for age were included in the study. All participants completed an MRI session, neuropsychological testing, and an evaluation of clinical variables including …
Glycosyl Thiocarbamates As New Building Blocks For Chemical Glycosylation, Sneha Chandrashekhar Ranade
Glycosyl Thiocarbamates As New Building Blocks For Chemical Glycosylation, Sneha Chandrashekhar Ranade
Dissertations
Having multiple functions in biological systems e.g. fertilization, blood group determination, cell growth; carbohydrates have remained attractive subjects for the study. They are also involved in various life threatening biological processes, such as viral and bacterial infections, tumor development, etc. Understanding of these involvements/interactions of carbohydrates in such critical processes is essential for the development of carbohydrate based vaccines and therapeutics. Although carbohydrates are present abundantly in nature, their isolation is cumbersome and low yielding, which is why, the synthesis of carbohydrate units has been of interest to many scientists. Efforts have been made to make these synthetic methods more …

The Role Of Oxygen In The Uptake Of Deuterium In Lithiated Graphite, C. N. Taylor, J. Dadras, Kara E. Luitjohan, Jean P. Allain, P. S. Kristic, C. H. Skinner
Birck and NCN Publications
We investigate the mechanism of deuterium retention by lithiated graphite and its relationship to the oxygen concentration through surface sensitive experiments and atomistic simulations. Deposition of lithium on graphite yielded 5%-8% oxygen surface concentration and when subsequently irradiated with D ions at energies between 500 and 1000 eV/amu and fluences over 10(16) cm(-2) the oxygen concentration rose to between 25% and 40%. These enhanced oxygen levels were reached in a few seconds compared to about 300 h when the lithiated graphite was allowed to adsorb oxygen from the ambient environment under equilibrium conditions. Irradiating graphite without lithium deposition, however, resulted …
Delamination Detection In Concrete Using Disposable Impactors For Excitation, Anjali Narendra Patil
Delamination Detection In Concrete Using Disposable Impactors For Excitation, Anjali Narendra Patil
Theses and Dissertations
Delaminations in concrete bridge decks result primarily from corrosion of the reinforcing bars (or rebar). This corrosion leads to volumetric expansion of the rebar. When the rebar expands, concrete cracks, and there is a localized separation of the concrete cover from the underlying concrete. Impact-echo testing is an effective technique to map delaminations on concrete bridge decks. However, mapping speed is limited by necessary retrieval of the impactor for traditional tests. To achieve higher scanning speeds, it is advantageous to use both a non-contact measurement (air-coupled impact-echo) and disposable-impactor excitation. Disposable impactors have the potential advantage of achieving greater deck …
Xylo-Oligosaccharides Production From Corn Fiber And In-Vitro Evaluation For Prebiotic Effect, Aditya Samala
Xylo-Oligosaccharides Production From Corn Fiber And In-Vitro Evaluation For Prebiotic Effect, Aditya Samala
Theses and Dissertations
Xylooligosaccharides (XOS) are considered to be prebiotics. Prebiotics are defined as non-digestible food ingredients that benefit the host by stimulating the growth and activity of a limited number of bacteria, such as the Bifidobacterium genus, in the colon. Corn fiber separated from distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) could be a valuable feedstock for XOS production. The objective of the first chapter was to determine the efficacy for autohydrolysis to produce XOS using fiber separated from DDGS. Fiber was treated with deionized water in a Parr-reactor, at temperatures ranging from 140 to 220 °C to produce XOS. The maximum total …

Transmission Shift Map Optimization For Reduced Electrical Energy Consumption In A Pre-Transmission Parallel Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle, Jonathan Dean Moore
Transmission Shift Map Optimization For Reduced Electrical Energy Consumption In A Pre-Transmission Parallel Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle, Jonathan Dean Moore
Theses and Dissertations
The use of an automatic transmission in pre-transmission parallel hybrid electric vehicles provides greater potential for powertrain optimization than conventional vehicles. By modifying the shift map, the transmission’s gear selection can be adjusted to reduce the energy consumption of the vehicle. A method for determining the optimal shift map for this hybrid vehicle has been implemented using global optimization and software-in-the-loop vehicle simulation. An analysis of the optimization has been performed using software-in-the-loop and hardware-in-the-loop simulation and evaluates two vehicle modes: regenerative braking active and regenerative braking disabled. The results of these two modes illustrate the successful implementation of the …
Model-Based Autonomic Performance Management Of Distributed Enterprise Systems And Applications, Rajat Mehrotra
Model-Based Autonomic Performance Management Of Distributed Enterprise Systems And Applications, Rajat Mehrotra
Theses and Dissertations
Distributed computing systems (DCS) host a wide variety of enterprise applications in dynamic and uncertain operating environments. These applications require stringent reliability, availability, and quality of service (QoS) guarantee to maintain their service level agreements (SLAs). Due to the growing size and complexity of DCS, an autonomic performance management system is required to maintain SLAs of these applications. A model-based autonomic performance management structure is developed in this dissertation for applications hosted in DCS. A systematic application performance modeling approach is introduced in this dissertation to define the dependency relationships among the system parameters, which impact the application performance. The …
Modeling Dendritic Solidification Using Lattice Boltzmann And Cellular Automaton Methods, Mohsen Eshraghi Kakhki
Modeling Dendritic Solidification Using Lattice Boltzmann And Cellular Automaton Methods, Mohsen Eshraghi Kakhki
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation presents the development of numerical models based on lattice Boltzmann (LB) and cellular automaton (CA) methods for solving phase change and microstructural evolution problems. First, a new variation of the LB method is discussed for solving the heat conduction problem with phase change. In contrast to previous explicit algorithms, the latent heat source term is treated implicitly in the energy equation, avoiding iteration steps and improving the formulation stability and efficiency. The results showed that the model can deal with phase change problems more accurately and efficiently than explicit LB models. Furthermore, a new numerical technique is introduced …

Drawing Lessons From The U.K. Constitutional Reform Act Of 2005, Terence J. Lau
Management and Marketing Faculty Publications
In this City Square dialogue, Professor Judith Maute provided the initial spark in her important 2007 article on reforms to judicial selection in the United Kingdom.[1] In her article, Professor Maute outlined the breathtaking and daring changes implemented in the U.K. that upended centuries of tradition to modernize and strengthen public confidence in the judiciary. Most significant among these changes were the creation of a Supreme Court and dramatically moving the process of becoming a judge away from a secretive appointment to a professional Judicial Appointments Commission.[2] The reforms eschew direct affirmative action, but place an explicit value on diversity …
A Decision Support System To Design The In-Bound Supply Chain For Biomass Co-Fire In Power Plants, William David Bowen
A Decision Support System To Design The In-Bound Supply Chain For Biomass Co-Fire In Power Plants, William David Bowen
Theses and Dissertations
This work is focused on designing a hub-and-spoke in-bound supply chain networks for coal plants. Biomass and coal are coired to produce electricity. One of the main reasons for focusing this study on biomass supply to coal plants is that biomass, in the form of forest and agricultural waste, is cleaner to burn as compared to coal. The user, most likely a supply chain manager or production control engineer, would input their supplier locations, costs and biomass availability. The mathematical model which supports this DSS is a mixed-integer program. The model uses this input to identify optimal order quantities which …
A Dynamic Hybrid Rans/Les Modeling Methodology For Turbulent/Transitional Flow Field Prediction, Mohammad Faridul Alam
A Dynamic Hybrid Rans/Les Modeling Methodology For Turbulent/Transitional Flow Field Prediction, Mohammad Faridul Alam
Theses and Dissertations
A dynamic hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)-Large Eddy Simulation (LES) modeling framework has been investigated and further developed to improve the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) prediction of turbulent flow features along with laminar-to-turbulent transitional phenomena. In recent years, the use of hybrid RANS/LES (HRL) models has become more common in CFD simulations, since HRL models offer more accuracy than RANS in regions of flow separation at a reduced cost relative to LES in attached boundary layers. The first part of this research includes evaluation and validation of a dynamic HRL (DHRL) model that aims to address issues regarding the RANS-to-LES zonal …
Creation Of An Internal State Variable Plasticity-Damage-Corrosion Model Validated By Experiments With Magnesium Alloys, Christopher Avery Walton
Creation Of An Internal State Variable Plasticity-Damage-Corrosion Model Validated By Experiments With Magnesium Alloys, Christopher Avery Walton
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, a new consistent formulation coupling kinematics, thermodynamics, and kinetics with damage using an extended multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient that accounts for corrosion effects is presented. The technical approach used for modeling the corrosion behavior of magnesium alloys was divided into three primary steps. First, a predictive corrosion model was developed based on experimental corrosion observations. The experimentally-observed corrosion mechanisms of pitting, intergranular, and general corrosion on the AZ31 magnesium alloy were quantified in 3.5 wt.% NaCl immersion and salt spray environments using optical microscopy and laser profilometry to document the changes in the pit characteristics. …

A Multiple Case Study For Calibrating Acoustic Backscatter To Total Suspended Material In A Large River System, Brittany Lynne Gunkel
Theses and Dissertations
Sediment transport measurements are determined using techniques such as bedmaterial and suspended-sediment sampling, and more recently the conversion of acoustic backscatter (ABS). Acoustic waves scatter and attenuate while passing through a watersediment mixture and the backscatter is converted to sediment concentration, size, and shape. A multiple case study performed using data from West Bay, Old River, and Mississippi River at Vicksburg show the variability of a large river system TSM flux during assorted hydrographs and two methods (CHL and moving boat) capture the events. After processing and applying the two methods the results showed that the methods are typically within …

Extending The Conversation: A Network Analysis Of Academic Associations In Workplace Spirituality, Monty Lynn, David J. Burns
Extending The Conversation: A Network Analysis Of Academic Associations In Workplace Spirituality, Monty Lynn, David J. Burns
Management Sciences
Examining academic networks provides insight into boundaries and boundary crossing as well as knowledge diffusion. We examine four academic networks focused on business, spirituality, and religion to identify network boundaries and boundary crossing. Scholars tend to align with networks consistent with the nature of their employing institution, both in its relative emphasis on research and its religious affiliation. Network and religious differences contribute to the relative isolation of research communities, despite shared topical interests and reliance on similar scholarly sources. The use of normative authorities may limit networking, but the relative absence of weak network links across networks may underestimate …
Characterization And Reaction Of An Analog Of The Anticancer Drug Oxaliplatin, Jonathan D. Hendrie
Characterization And Reaction Of An Analog Of The Anticancer Drug Oxaliplatin, Jonathan D. Hendrie
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Oxaliplatin is an anticancer drug that reacts with DNA, RNA, and proteins both in vitro and in vivo. Our research focuses on synthesizing analogs of oxaliplatin and understanding how bulky ligand groups affect reaction with amino acids. (R,R)-N,N’-dimethyl-1,2-diaminocyclohexane platinum(II) oxalate or Pt(Me2dach)(ox) varies from oxaliplatin or Pt(dach)(ox) in that it has one methyl group attached to each platinum coordinated nitrogen. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has shown that the reactions of N-Acetylmethionine (N-AcMet) with Pt(Me2dach)(ox) and Pt(dach)(ox) proceed at similar rates suggesting that the methyl groups of Pt(Me2dach)(ox) have little effect on the initial reaction. Whereas the reaction of Pt(dach)(ox) …
