North Atlantic Deep Water Pathways And Eddy Generation Beneath The Agulhas Current System, Joni Lum

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) has long been an area of study due to its link to climate change. North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) forms the deep water limb of the AMOC, ventilating the deep sea. Using high resolution model output, we show that NADW is strongly influenced by the Agulhas Current System as it flows into the Indian Ocean around South Africa. Eulerian analysis reveals that the high salinity signature of NADW erodes beneath the Agulhas Current System and is deflected to the south by the potential vorticity field. As part of a US Naval Research Laboratory Experiment (Teague et al., 2007), fourteen Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) were deployed on the northern rim of the DeSoto Canyon in 2004, as well as four Aanderaa current meters placed at approximately 950 m depth. Preceding placement of this moored array, dozens of conductivity, temperature, and depth probes (CTDs) were ship-cast in the surrounding area. At 0000 UTC on September 16, 2004, hurricane Ivan passed directly over the mooring array, leaving all fourteen moorings intact. Environmental and Occupational Health Faculty Publications

The Escherichia coli sequence type 131 (ST131) clone is notorious for extraintestinal infections, fluoroquinolone resistance, and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) production, attributable to a CTX-M-15-encoding mobile element. Here, we applied pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and whole-genome sequencing to reconstruct the evolutionary history of the ST131 clone. PFGE-based cluster analyses suggested that both fluoroquinolone resistance and ESBL production had been acquired by multiple ST131 sublineages through independent genetic events. In contrast, the more robust whole-genome-sequence-based phylogenomic analysis revealed that fluoroquinolone resistance was confined almost entirely to a single, rapidly expanding ST131 subclone, designated H30-R. This Technical Document describes the foundations for an aggregation matrix function implemented in MATLAB, including the format and structure of the required aggregation vector used as an argument to the function. The function is passed with the Ndimensional aggregation vector as an argument. The aggregation vector contains N values ranging from 1 to M, each of which is the aggregate index corresponding to the N preaggregation indices. The function returns an aggregation matrix with M rows and N columns. Pre-multiplying an existing matrix with N rows by the aggregation matrix reduces the row dimensionality from N to M by adding …

Publications and Research

Although a greater degree of personal obesity is associated with weaker negativity toward overweight people on both explicit (i.e., self-report) and implicit (i.e., indirect behavioral) measures, overweight people still prefer thin people on average. We investigated whether the national and cultural context – particularly the national prevalence of obesity – predicts attitudes toward overweight people independent of personal identity and weight status. Data were collected from a total sample of 338,121 citizens from 71 nations in 22 different languages on the Project Implicit website (https://implicit.harvard.edu/) between May 2006 and October 2010.
