An Investigation Into The Influence Of Dietary Saturated Fat And Quercetin Supplementation On Adiposity, Macrophage Behavior, Inflammation, And Non-Alcoholic Fatty-Liver Disease, Reilly Enos
Theses and Dissertations
The overall objective of this dissertation was to examine the degree to which manipulation of the saturated fat content of a high-fat diet influenced obesity-related outcomes as well as to see if the naturally-occurring flavonoid, quercetin, could attenuate the resulting obesity and related metabolic and inflammatory side effects. Specifically, these studies examined 1) the influential role of saturated fat on macrophage function, inflammation, and other obesity-related comorbidities, including non-alcoholic fatty-liver disease, and 2) the potential benefits of quercetin supplementation. Overall, results from these studies suggest that adiposity, macrophage behavior, inflammation, insulin resistance, and non-alcoholic fatty-liver disease progression can be greatly …
The Effects Of Rainfall-Runoff On Particulate Organic Carbon Cycling In Salt Marshes, Si Chen
The Effects Of Rainfall-Runoff On Particulate Organic Carbon Cycling In Salt Marshes, Si Chen
Theses and Dissertations
Low tide rainfall-runoff processes have been proposed as a kind of coastal ocean "hot moment" capable of transporting disproportionately large amounts of material from the salt marsh surface to the water column. However, the resulting organic matter cycling has not been well characterized and the cumulative effects of recurring short-term low tide rainfall events are not known, especially in the context of outwelling. The purpose of this Ph.D. research is to quantitatively evaluate the effects of low tide rainfall on particulate organic carbon (POC) cycling in a South Carolina salt marsh.
This dissertation is comprised of four parts. First, a …
Preparation, Characterization And Application Of Novel Proton Conducting Ceramics, Siwei Wang
Preparation, Characterization And Application Of Novel Proton Conducting Ceramics, Siwei Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the immediate energy shortage and the requirement of environment protection nowadays, the efficient, effective and environmental friendly use of current energy sources is urgent. Energy conversion and storage is thus an important focus both for industry and academia. As one of the hydrogen energy related materials, proton conducting ceramics can be applied in solid oxide fuel cells and steam electrolysers, as well as high temperature hydrogen separation membranes and hydrogen sensors. For most of the practical applications, both high proton conductivity and chemical stability are desirable. However, the state-of-the-art proton conducting ceramics are facing great challenges in simultaneously …
Accelprint:Accelerometers Are Different By Birth, Sanorita Dey
Accelprint:Accelerometers Are Different By Birth, Sanorita Dey
Theses and Dissertations
This paper submits a hypothesis that smartphone accelerometers possess unique fingerprints. We believe that the fingerprints arise from hardware imperfections during the sensor manufacturing process, causing every sensor chip to respond differently to the same motion stimulus. The differences in responses are subtle enough that they do not affect most of the higher level functions computed on them. Nonetheless, upon close inspection, these fingerprints emerge with consistency, and can even be somewhat independent of the stimulus that generates them. Measurements and classification on 80 standalone accelerometer chips, 25 Android phones, and 2 tablets, show precision and recall upward of 96%, …
Accelerating Short Read Mapping Using A Dsp Based Coprocessor, Shaun I. Gause
Accelerating Short Read Mapping Using A Dsp Based Coprocessor, Shaun I. Gause
Theses and Dissertations
Advances in next generation sequencing technologies have allowed short reads to be generated at an increasing rate, shifting the bottleneck of the sequencing process to the short read mapping computations. High costs and extended processing times drive researchers to pursue more efficient solutions with an overall goal of a short read mapping architecture capable of processing short reads as they are generated. Digital signal processors have shown high performance capabilities while maintaining low power consumption in a wide field of applications. This thesis explores the use of a DSP accelerated exact match short read mapping algorithm, focusing on a performance …
3d Grain Segmentation In Superalloy Images Using Multichannel Edge-Weighted Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation Based Methods, Yu Cao
Theses and Dissertations
Accurate grain segmentation on 3D superalloy images is very important in materials science and engineering. From grain segmentation, we can derive the underlying superalloy grains' micro-structures, based on which many important physical, mechanical and chemical properties of the superalloy samples can be evaluated. However, grain segmentation is usually a very challenging problem since: 1) even a small 3D superalloy sample may contain hundreds of grains; 2) carbides and noises may degrade the imaging quality; and 3) the intensity within a grain may not be homogeneous. In addition, the same grain may present different appearances, i.e. intensities, under different microscope settings. …
Syntactic And Semantic Interoperability Among Hydrologic Models, Mostafa Mohamed Elag
Syntactic And Semantic Interoperability Among Hydrologic Models, Mostafa Mohamed Elag
Theses and Dissertations
Development of integrated hydrologic models requires coupling of multidisciplinary, independent models and collaboration between different scientific communities. Component-based modeling provides an approach for the integration of models from different disciplines. A key advantage of component-based modeling is that it allows components to be created, tested, reused, extended, and maintained by a large group of model developers and end users. One significant challenge that must be addressed in creating an integrated hydrologic model using a component-based approach is enhancing the interoperability of components between different modeling communities and frameworks. The major goal of this work is to advance the integration of …
Characterization Of The Role Of Fro6 In Metal Homeostasis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Margo Ellen Maynes
Characterization Of The Role Of Fro6 In Metal Homeostasis In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Margo Ellen Maynes
Theses and Dissertations
Iron deficiency is the most common human nutritional disorder in the world today, affecting approximately 2 billon people worldwide, almost a third of the world's population. For most of the world's population, plant foods serve as the major source of dietary iron. One approach that may contribute towards the solution of iron deficiency is the development of crop plants that contain higher levels of bioavailable iron. This project focuses on FRO6, a ferric chelate reductase in Arabidopsis thaliana that is thought to reduce apoplastic iron for transport across the plasma membrane in leaf cells. We hypothesize therefore that FRO6 controls …
Environmental Pre-Conditioning Of Bacterial Populations And Communities To Extreme Acidity, Gabriel Joseph Swenson
Environmental Pre-Conditioning Of Bacterial Populations And Communities To Extreme Acidity, Gabriel Joseph Swenson
Theses and Dissertations
The ability of opportunistic enteric pathogens to cause disease is effected by their ability to survive the variable and lethal acidity of the mammalian host gastrointestinal milieu. In many of these pathogens, survival is conferred by an acid stress response (ASR). ASR is elicited when bacterial cells are pre-conditioned in sub-lethal acidity (pH 4-6) which induces rapid biochemical and physiological modifications and facilitates survival when extreme acidity (pH 1-3) is encountered. In Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of the diarrheal disease Cholera, ASR was initially investigated in an effort to determine how this ubiquitous aquatic bacterium is capable of causing …
The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Cell Death Induced By Thymidylate Synthase Inhibitors, Ufuk Ozer
The Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Cell Death Induced By Thymidylate Synthase Inhibitors, Ufuk Ozer
Theses and Dissertations
Thymidylate synthase (TS) catalyzes the reductive transfer of a methyl group from N5,N10-methylenetetrahydrofolate (CH2-THF) to dUMP, forming dTMP and dihydrofolate (DHF). It is generally accepted that inhibition of the enzyme leads to a deficiency of dTMP, followed by genome damage and programmed cell death. As such, TS has long been viewed as an important target of anti-neoplastic agents, such as 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and raltitrexed (RTX), which lead to inhibition of the enzyme. Oxidative stress is well-recognized as having a central role in cellular response to a number of DNA damaging agents, and may be a proximate cause of …
The Role Of Host-Tumor Interactions In Liver Metastasis Of Colorectal Cancer, Yu Zhang
The Role Of Host-Tumor Interactions In Liver Metastasis Of Colorectal Cancer, Yu Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Colon cancer is the third most frequent cancer and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Liver metastasis is the major cause of death in colon cancer. Successful metastases depend on productive collaborations between tumor cells and host-derived cells in the tumor microenvironment, target organ environments, and cells in the hematopoietic compartment.
To identify the host-tumor interactions promoting liver metastasis and their molecular and cellular mediators, an orthotopic mouse model of liver metastasis of colon cancer was established that recapitulates all stages of tumor growth and metastasis. A highly metastatic mouse carcinoma cell line CT26-FL3 was …
Quantifying Regional-Scale Water Storage Using Models And Observations: Application For Drought Assessment In South Carolina, Mirza Md Mozaddid Billah
Quantifying Regional-Scale Water Storage Using Models And Observations: Application For Drought Assessment In South Carolina, Mirza Md Mozaddid Billah
Theses and Dissertations
Hydrologic models are widely used to determine the occurrence and severity of droughts, and to aid in the decision making process for reducing drought impacts. These models apply approaches including water and energy balance equations to determine water availability at field to continental scales. One challenge in implementing hydrologic models at larger scales (regional to continental) is the lack of data with sufficient spatial and temporal resolution to represent actual conditions within the modeling domain. If such data is available, the challenge remains how best to find, access, and process the data so that it can be used within hydrologic …
Fabrication And Characterization Of Surrogate Fuel Particles Using The Spark Erosion Method, Kathryn Elizabeth Metzger
Fabrication And Characterization Of Surrogate Fuel Particles Using The Spark Erosion Method, Kathryn Elizabeth Metzger
Theses and Dissertations
In light of the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant, the Department of Energy's Advanced Fuels Program has shifted its interest from enhanced performance fuels to enhanced accident tolerance fuels. Dispersion fuels possess higher thermal conductivities than traditional light water reactor fuel and as a result, offer improved safety margins. The benefits of a dispersion fuel are due to the presence of the secondary non-fissile phase (matrix), which serves as a barrier to fission products and improves the overall thermal performance of the fuel. However, the presence of a matrix material reduces the fuel volume, which lowers the fissile …
Pellet Cladding Mechanical Interactions Of Ceramic Claddings Fuels Under Light Water Reactor Conditions, Bo-Shiuan Li
Pellet Cladding Mechanical Interactions Of Ceramic Claddings Fuels Under Light Water Reactor Conditions, Bo-Shiuan Li
Theses and Dissertations
Ceramic materials such as silicon carbide (SiC) are promising candidate materials for nuclear fuel cladding and are of interest as part of a potential accident tolerant fuel design due to its high temperature strength, dimensional stability under irradiation, corrosion resistance, and lower neutron absorption cross-section. It also offers drastically lower hydrogen generation in loss of coolant accidents such as that experienced at Fukushima. With the implementation of SiC material properties to the fuel performance code, FRAPCON, performances of the SiC-clad fuel are compared with the conventional Zircaloy-clad fuel. Due to negligible creep and high stiffness, SiC-clad fuel allows gap closure …

Care As The Essential Element In Teacher And Student Interactions: Examining Dialogue As A Vehicle For Building A Caring Environment, Crystal Plumley Mcswain
Care As The Essential Element In Teacher And Student Interactions: Examining Dialogue As A Vehicle For Building A Caring Environment, Crystal Plumley Mcswain
Theses and Dissertations
This present study considers to what extent dialogue between teachers and students can support a caring environment. Research investigating behavior and qualities of effective teaching has been liked with caring relationships (Anfara & Schmid, 2007; Marzano, 2007; Noddings, 2005). "Relationships and instruction are not an either-or-proposition, but rather an incredible combination." (Brown, 2010, p. 10) The present study will examine to what extent dialogue, as one of the components of a proposed model of caring, can build a caring environment in seventh grade classrooms at a local middle school (Noddings, 2005, p.53). Specifically, dialogue skills such as intonation, empathy, respect, …
Literacy Crisis, Technology, And The Radical Reversal Of Power, Erin Michelle Cromer
Literacy Crisis, Technology, And The Radical Reversal Of Power, Erin Michelle Cromer
Theses and Dissertations
As new media is changing the way individuals communicate, efforts have already been made within universities to, once again, construct new literacy standards in the digital age, producing the appearance of a literacy crisis. I argue that rather than producing another literacy crisis, the fundamental reversal of the power structure concerning who dominates standard literacy places greater expectations on composition scholars and practitioners--rather than students--ultimately providing the conditions of possibility for using power productively to imagine a new pedagogy of rhetorical dexterity that reverses the role of expectations from standards to invention. Such a pedagogy offers rhetoric and composition a …
Fertility, Contraception, And Abortion And The Partnership Of Henry Miller And Anaïs Nin, Kathryn Holmes
Fertility, Contraception, And Abortion And The Partnership Of Henry Miller And Anaïs Nin, Kathryn Holmes
Theses and Dissertations
During their creative and sexual relationship, Anaïs Nin and Henry Miller together shaped their identities as artists. When they met, both were married and had tried writing before, but their partnership pushed them into a new kind of life in which writing took precedence. During this process, they described their relationship as literarily fertile; a few years later, Nin actually became pregnant with Miller's child and decided to have an abortion. In Nin's diary, metaphor and reality overlap as she anxiously makes sense of her decision that is informed by her belief that an artist cannot be a mother. In …

As resources become scarcer for school districts and shelters, proving efficacy of programs is essential for successful partnerships and program achievements. VSI: Veterinary Science Initiative is a program developed by the education team at the Charleston Animal Society as a model for cooperative education between shelters, veterinarians, and other private organizations to collaborate with local school districts, while also conducting research about how this curriculum benefits student knowledge, organizational awareness, and community engagement.
Development And Figures Of Merit Of Microextraction And Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography For Forensic Characterization Of Dye Profiles On Trace Acrylic, Nylon, Polyester, And Cotton Textile Fibers, Scott James Hoy
Theses and Dissertations
Methodology for the microextraction of basic dyes on acrylic, acid dyes on nylon, disperse dyes on polyester, and reactive dyes, direct dyes, and indigo on cotton textile fibers is reported. Although these processes are destructive to the fiber evidence, the ability to analyze dye extracts from sub-millimeter fiber lengths of single fibers, coupled with detection limits in the hundred picogram range by ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) with both diode array detection (DAD) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS) makes routine forensic characterization feasible.
Microextraction, followed by UPLC, can often distinguish similar fibers containing different, but similar, dyes with the combination of …

Design And Synthesis Of Polymer-Based Advanced Nanomaterials Using Raft Polymerization And Click Reaction, Junting Li
Theses and Dissertations
This research focuses on exploring new synthetic approaches to prepare polymer-based advanced nanomaterials using highly efficient chemical tools, such as reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and click reactions.
In the first project, novel synthetic routes to produce fullerene-based polymers were designed. First, mono-alkynyl functionalized fullerene was prepared starting with pristine fullerene (C60). Methyl methacrylate and 6-azido hexyl methacrylate were then randomly copolymerized via RAFT polymerization with well-controlled molecular weights and copolymer compositions. Finally, the two moieties were covalently assembled into a series of well-defined side-chain fullerene polymers (SFP's) via the copper-catalyzed click reaction. The TGA and UV-vis …
Polybenzimidazole Membranes With Enhanced Mechanical Properties For Extended Lifetime Electrochemical Applications, Max Molleo
Theses and Dissertations
After approximately 20 years of development, polybenzimidazole (PBI) chemistries and the concomitant manufacturing processes have evolved into commercially produced membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). Commerical PBI MEAs can operate reliably for over two years at elevated temperatures of 120-180°C due to the physical and chemical robustness of PBI membranes. Recently, the Department of Energy has issued a target of 40,000-80,000 hours for stationary (i.e. combined heat and power, back-up power) polymer electrolyte membrane / proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. It is known through observation that over time, PBI membranes at 180°C creep in a direction perpendicular to compressive forces, thus …

Their bandgap ranges from 6.2 eV for AlN to 0.7 eV for InN, covering a wide spectral range from infrared (1.77 mm) to deep ultraviolet (200 nm). Their direct bandgap makes them useful for fabricating optoelectronic devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), laser diodes (LDs), and photodetectors. III-nitride semiconductor materials also possess strong bond strengths and exhibit good structural, chemical and thermal stability. These properties make it …
Fault Protection In Dc Distribution Systems Via Coordinated Control Of Power Supply Converters And Bus Tie Switches, Pietro Cairoli
Fault Protection In Dc Distribution Systems Via Coordinated Control Of Power Supply Converters And Bus Tie Switches, Pietro Cairoli
Theses and Dissertations
A new fault protection method responds to the current needs of emerging dc power distribution systems by coordinating electronic power converters and mechanical contactors to rapidly isolate short circuit faults while maintaining continuity of power to loads. This work is important because the increasing performance, higher efficiency, and decreasing cost of electronic power converters have spurred a rediscovery and proliferation of dc power distribution systems. Although dc distribution offers advantages such as higher transmission efficiency, higher power density, higher reliability, and ease of interfacing asynchronous sources, enthusiasm for adopting dc technologies suffers from widespread concern over the means to protect …
Redeeming The Loss Of Being: Ontology And Possibility In Thomas Pynchon's Later Novels, Andrew Field
Redeeming The Loss Of Being: Ontology And Possibility In Thomas Pynchon's Later Novels, Andrew Field
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis takes up two novels written by Thomas Pynchon, and attempts gain a better understanding of how these two novels pose, reframe and resolve questions concerning existence in a postmodern era. Characterized by a loss of tangible meaning, uncertainty, and ever-increasing variability, the postmodern period has forced artists to define large philosophical concepts such as being, knowledge, and understanding without the sensibilities which grounded bygone eras. Mason & Dixon and Against the Day, both novels by Thomas Pynchon, take up the question of being in an uncertain time, and offers a reconceptualization of the political responsiblities of the individual …
