Finding Room For Everyone: Libraries Confront Social Exclusion, Jen Hoyer Jan 2013

Finding Room For Everyone: Libraries Confront Social Exclusion, Jen Hoyer

Publications and Research

Communities that are working to combat exclusion have greater potential for success if they enlist the support of public libraries, which are in many ways ideally situated to welcome marginalized populations and provide programs and services that combat social exclusion. This chapter explains how this adaptability in response to social problems fits with the mandate of public libraries; examines why and how libraries should confront social exclusion; and looks at the Atwater Library and Computer Centre (ALCC) in Westmount, Québec, as an illustration of how this has been successfully accomplished.

Culp’S Hill: Key To Union Success At Gettysburg, Ryan Donnelly Jan 2013

Culp’S Hill: Key To Union Success At Gettysburg, Ryan Donnelly

The Gettysburg College Journal of the Civil War Era

Brigadier General George S. Greene’s position on Culp’s Hill during the Battle of Gettysburg is arguably the crucial lynchpin of July 2, 1863. Had this position at the barb of the fishhook defensive line fallen, Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his army would then have been positioned to take Cemetery Hill, thus breaking the curve of the hook on the Union right. This most likely would have sent the Union into retreat, leaving the direct route to Washington unguarded. Fortunately, valiant efforts were made by men like Generals George S. Greene and Henry H. Lockwood in order to preserve …

Entertaining, Informing, Persuading: Figures Of Speech To Prepare For Health And Safety, David H. Lee, Frederick Steier, Wit Ostrenko

Publications and Research

The public mandates science center exhibits that are entertaining as well as informative. In addition, exhibits can also be performative, in that they act back upon the visitors with an injunction to change their ways. We give examples from two exhibits that not only inform, but also open up space for changes in behavior and perception, particularly in arenas of public health. We look at two recent and ongoing exhibits at MOSI – “Disasterville” and “The Amazing You” - and examine the affordances suggested by figures of speech such as eponymy, hyponymy, hypernymy and retronymy. Tropological research into museum exhibits …

Putting Qr Codes To The Test, Leo Lo, Jason Coleman, Danielle Theiss

Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to gain insight into patrons' preferences for quick response code (QR code) design as well as data about their potential benefits.

Design/methodology/approach – A survey was used to learn whether patrons find it easy to use a QR code, to gather patrons' opinions about several possible library uses for QR codes, and to solicit additional ideas for using QR codes in libraries. A small-scale pilot project was implemented to learn whether the Libraries' patrons would make use of QR codes. To augment the data gained from the first two studies, five focus …

Wavelet Based Automated Postural Event Detection And Activity Classification With Single Imu (Tempo), Thurmon E. Lockhart, Rahul Soangra, Jian Zhang, Xuefang Wu

Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research

Mobility characteristics associated with activity of daily living such as sitting down, lying down, rising up, and walking are considered to be important in maintaining functional independence and healthy life style especially for the growing elderly population. Characteristics of postural transitions such as sit-to-stand are widely used by clinicians as a physical indicator of health, and walking is used as an important mobility assessment tool. Many tools have been developed to assist in the assessment of functional levels and to detect a person’s activities during daily life. These include questionnaires, observation, diaries, kinetic and kinematic systems, and validated functional tests. …

Understanding Financial Derivatives, Timothy E. Lynch Jan 2013

Understanding Financial Derivatives, Timothy E. Lynch

Faculty Works

Derivatives are commonly defined as some variation of the following: a financial instrument whose value is derived from the performance of a secondary source such as an underlying bond, commodity or index. But this definition is both over-inclusive and under-inclusive. Thus, not surprisingly, derivatives are largely misunderstood, including by many policy makers, regulators and legal analysts. It is important for interested parties such as policy makers to understand derivatives, because the types and uses of derivatives have exploded in the last few decades, and because these financial instruments can provide both social benefits and cause social harms. This Article presents …

A Transformation-Based Approach To Implication Of Gste Assertion Graphs, Gouwu Yang, William N. N. Hung, Xiaoyu Song, Wensheng Guo

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Generalized symbolic trajectory evaluation (GSTE) is a model checking approach and has successfully demonstrated its powerful capacity in formal verification of VLSI systems. GSTE is an extension of symbolic trajectory evaluation (STE) to the model checking of -regular properties. It is an alternative to classical model checking algorithms where properties are specified as finite-state automata. In GSTE, properties are specified as assertion graphs, which are labeled directed graphs where each edge is labeled with two labeling functions: antecedent and consequent. In this paper, we show the complement relation between GSTE assertion graphs and finite-state automata with the expressiveness of regular …

Complexity In Property, Meredith M. Render Jan 2013

Complexity In Property, Meredith M. Render

Articles

This article illuminates the largely misunderstood relationship between complexity and the regulation of property interests Specifically the article presents the complexity thesis a novel explanatory account of the principle of numerus clausus The principle of numerus clausus is an ancient common law rule which prohibits the customization of property interests The complexity thesis holds that the primary function of numerus clausus is to prevent the proliferation of highly idiosyncratic property interests In so doing numerus clausus provides a bulkhead against the overwhelming complexity that would ensue if customized property interests were permitted For the last fifteen years numerus clausus has …
