Long Term Economic Impact Of The Natural Resources And Human Capital On The Growth Rate, Ibrahima Coulibaly
Long Term Economic Impact Of The Natural Resources And Human Capital On The Growth Rate, Ibrahima Coulibaly
Research Papers
They have been growing debate among economists and others social-scientists about the relationship between natural resources and human capital and growth. Although most economists agreed, in short run that natural resources do impact growth negatively through human capital. But, the long term relationship seems to be unsettled, and they have not been too many studies focus on the long term equilibrium between natural resources and human capital. Therefore, this paper aims to contribute in growth literature, by studying at the long term relationship between natural resources, human capital, and growth, using Mali as a case study. Natural resource seems to …

Recognizing The Impact Of Personal And Environmental Influences On Type 2 Diabetes Management, Johna S. Brown
Research Papers
Globalization has drastically altered the way humans function. Modern ways of life have induced obesity and type 2 diabetes upsurges on a global level. Type 2 diabetes is a complex chronic illness that can be extremely difficult to prevent and manage. It requires strict consistency in terms of energy consumption, self-assessment, and physical activity. A wide array of variables impact human behavior and one’s ability to abide by such strict regimens. These variables can often be categorized as environmental or personal influences. Comprehensive understanding of these variables can provide insight to diabetics and health professions regarding barriers to diabetes management …

Providing Academic Access To Individuals With Significant Disabilties [Sic], Lindsey Jill Frandsen
Providing Academic Access To Individuals With Significant Disabilties [Sic], Lindsey Jill Frandsen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Academic access to the general education curriculum for individuals with significant disabilities poses many challenges for educators. With the implementation of the Essential Elements in the summer of 2013, educators will have a new instructional framework for providing access to their students. Within this thesis I have explored the challenges educators face in regards to facilitating academic access for students with significant support needs through the use of focus group interviews, and provide a literature review demonstrating where schools have been in regards to providing access, and where they are headed.

From Sidebets To Sideshow: The Influence Of Gambling On The Development Of Professional Wrestling In America, 1870-1911, Lee Casebolt
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
While boxing and baseball have been common subjects of historical study, other sports of the nineteenth century have been comparatively neglected by historians. Professional wrestling, in particular, has received very little attention as a sport, as opposed to its twentieth century “sports entertainment” incarnation. What attention it has received has most commonly been through the lens of social history, focusing on wrestling as theater or its psychosexual overtones. Missing from its history is any consideration of the economic factors which influence the evolution of any professional endeavor. This paper explores the relationship between a wrestler’s payment and performance. Specifically, it …

The Transfer Of Military Culture To Private Sector Organizations: A Sense Of Duty Emerges, Janet K. Tinoco, Anke Arnaud Ph.D.
Publications
As a government institution, the United States (US) Department of Defense (DOD) wields powerful influence on private sector organizations in the defense industry beyond the implications of public policy. In our conceptual research, we study the DOD as a key customer stakeholder in these organizations and investigate the influence of its military culture on these private sector organizations. By analyzing the culture of the DOD, we uncover a new dimension, sense of duty, not previously studied in mainstream organization literature. We propose that this dimension transfers from the DOD to its private sector suppliers in the defense industry via interorganizational …

Examining Student Success: The Transition From H.S. To College Of First-Year Engineering Students, Leroy L. Long Iii
Publications
To improve retention and graduation rates, institutions of higher education have become increasingly interested in the experiences of first-year students. This is of even greater importance in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields such as engineering which are crucial for U.S. global competitiveness and homeland security. Interviews were conducted with six (6) first-year engineering students at a large, predominantly White land-grant institution located in the Midwestern region of the country to study their decisions and experiences during the transition from high school to college. More specifically, the investigation focused on under-represented students within undergraduate engineering. Interviews focused on three …

Implications Of Voluntary Communication Based On Gender, Education Level And Cultural Issues In An Online Environment, Vicki L. Gregory, Kiersten Cox
School of Information Faculty Publications
Because of the method(s) of communication in a particular class, gender and cultural differences can lead to a different mix of voluntary communication in the online or blended class setting from that of a traditional classroom. Given the hybrid nature of courses taught by the School of Infor-mation at the University of South Florida, a comparison can be made among the same students in class using different methods of class communication. Comparisons between graduate, under-graduate and student-athletes in School of Information courses can also be made. This paper ex-amines the differences experienced by students of varying cultural backgrounds in their …

Turing Test As A Defining Feature Of Ai-Completeness, Roman V. Yampolskiy
Turing Test As A Defining Feature Of Ai-Completeness, Roman V. Yampolskiy
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
The paper contributes to the development of the theory of AI-Completeness by formalizing the notion of AI-Complete, C-Complete and AI-Hard problems. The intended goal is to provide a classification of problems in the field of Artificial General Intelligence. We prove Turing Test to be an instance of an AI-Complete problem and further show certain AI problems to be AI-Complete or AI-Hard via polynomial time reductions. Finally, the paper suggests some directions for future work on the theory of AI-Completeness.

We present data from nighttime sounding rocket flights in the low latitude E region. The payloads carried a sweeping Langmuir probe, a plasma impedance probe, and electric field probes. A detailed examination of the plasma density, temperature, and electric field measurements show two strong sporadic E (Es) layers with very high electron temperatures (∼1000 K) on each side of the upper layer. The lower layer was consistent with the presence of a strong zonal neutral wind shear. The upper layer was strongly influenced by the presence of a strongly negative vertical electric field, with zonal winds and …
Hydrodynamic Modeling Of Ns-Laser Ablation, David Autrique, Vasilios Alexiades, Harihar Khanal
Hydrodynamic Modeling Of Ns-Laser Ablation, David Autrique, Vasilios Alexiades, Harihar Khanal
Publications
Laser ablation is a versatile and widespread technique, applied in an increasing number of medical, industrial and analytical applications. A hydrodynamic multiphase model describing nanosecond-laser ablation (ns- LA) is outlined. The model accounts for target heating and mass removal mechanisms as well as plume expansion and plasma formation. A copper target is placed in an ambient environment consisting of helium and irradiated by a nanosecond-laser pulse. The effect of variable laser settings on the ablation process is explored in 1-D numerical simulations.

Heteroclinic And Homoclinic Connections Between The Sun-Earth Triangular Points And Quasi-Satellite Orbits For Solar Observations, Pedro J. Llanos, Gerald R. Hintz, Martin W. Lo, James K. Miller
Publications
Investigation of new orbit geometries exhibits a very attractive behavior for a spacecraft to monitor space weather coming from the Sun. Several orbit transfer mechanisms are analyzed as potential alternatives to monitor solar activity such as a sub-solar orbit or quasi-satellite orbit and short and long heteroclinic and homoclinic connections between the triangular points L4 and L5 and the collinear point L3 of the CRTBP (circular restricted three-body problem) in the Sun-Earth system. These trajectories could serve as channels through where material can be transported from L5 to L3 by performing small maneuvers at the departure of the Trojan orbit. …

Interpersonal Power In The Criminal System, Kimberly A. Thomas
Interpersonal Power In The Criminal System, Kimberly A. Thomas
Articles
This Article identifies the workings of interpersonal power in the criminal system and considers the effect of these cases on criminal theory and practice. By uncovering this phenomenon, this Article hopes to spark a legal academic dialogue and inquiry that has, until now, been unspoken. This Article has roots in my former work as a Philadelphia public defender and in my current work as a clinical professor with students who appear in criminal and juvenile court. As an advocate for the poor in a busy courthouse, one of a lawyer's tasks is to discover the multiple "real" stories behind the …
Late-Night Law Firms, Scott Hershovitz
Late-Night Law Firms, Scott Hershovitz
Reviews
But it turns out that those late-night lawyers may not deserve the scorn that they get. In Sunlight and Settlement Mills, Nora Freeman Engstrom argues that firms like the ones that advertise late at night have developed practice models that achieve many of the aims that reformers have for no-fault accident compensation schemes. They deliver compensation cheaply and quickly, because they settle almost every claim and nearly never go to court. They resolve claims predictably and consistently, on account of cozy relationships with insurance adjusters that lead to a shared sense as to what different sorts of claims are …

Labor Goals And Antidiscrimination Norms: Employer Discretion, Reasonable Accommodation, And The Costs Of Individualized Treatment, Matthew A. Shapiro
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)' envisions a workplace markedly different from the one that organized labor has long endeavored to construct. While the statute mandates individualized treatment for disabled employees, organized labor has traditionally sought to limit the decision making discretion of employers-and thus their ability to provide such treatment.
Jury Nullification And The Rule Of Law, Brenner M. Fissell
Jury Nullification And The Rule Of Law, Brenner M. Fissell
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Despite an intractable judiciary, there is widespread consensus within the legal academy that jury nullification is compatible with the Rule of Law. This proposition is most strongly tested by “substantive nullifications,” where a jury nullifies simply because it disagrees with the law itself. While some substantive nullifications can comport with the Rule of Law, most commentators’ wholesale acceptance of the practice is not justified. They have erred by ignoring the non-substantive, procedural nature of the Rule of Law in favor of one determined by substantive “justice,” and also by taking a naively undifferentiated view of a “community’s” morality (even though …

Nsa Surveillance Since 9/11 And The Human Right To Privacy, G. Alex Sinha
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Since shortly after 9/11, if not earlier, the National Security Agency (NSA) has been collecting massive amounts of data about American citizens and permanent residents, ostensibly with the aim of preempting future terrorist attacks. While the NSA's program has invited substantial scholarly attention, specifically concerning its compliance with the United States Constitution and various domestic statutes, the academic debate about its merits entirely omits one crucial fact: the United States is also legally obliged to protect a human right to privacy, as codified in Article 17 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). This Article seeks to …
