An Investigation Of The Green Grove Initiative, Haley Brooke Kesterson

Honors Theses

Game days, particularly football game days, at division one universities generate a great deal of waste. At the University of Mississippi, the amount of waste generated on home football game Saturdays has been increasing. Increasing recycling by spectators may decrease the amount of waste generated and reduce the negative environmental impact of game days. The purpose of this case study was to explore the development and evaluation of interventions that may be effective for increasing recycling behaviors. Various interventions were implemented at each game of the 2012 season. Recyclables were collected and waste was measured following each game. Games with …

Socio-Economic Differences In Food Group And Nutrient Intakes Among Young Women In Ireland, Daniel Mccartney, Katherine Younger, John Kearney

Articles

The present study aimed to investigate socio-economic disparities in food and nutrient intakes among young Irish women. A total of 221 disadvantaged and seventy-four non-disadvantaged women aged 18–35 years were recruited. Diet was assessed using a diet history protocol. Of the total population, 153 disadvantaged and sixty-three non-disadvantaged women were classified as plausible dietary reporters. Food group intakes, nutrient intakes and dietary vitamin and mineral concentrations per MJ of energy consumed were compared between the disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged populations, as was compliance with dietary fibre, macronutrient and micronutrient intake guidelines. The disadvantaged women had lower intakes than the non-disadvantaged women …

The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status And Nutritional Knowledge In Women During Pregnancy, Michelle Lane, Ellen Barrett, Amy O'Higgins, Laura Mullaney, Michael Turner, Daniel Mccartney Jan 2013

The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status And Nutritional Knowledge In Women During Pregnancy, Michelle Lane, Ellen Barrett, Amy O'Higgins, Laura Mullaney, Michael Turner, Daniel Mccartney

Articles

Epidemiological data have shown that socioeconomic status affects nutritional knowledge and dietary quality(1). Irish national food surveys have also suggested that socioeconomic differences in food group, nutrient intakes, dietary attitudes and health behaviours exist (2,3). It is known that pregnancy can enhance a women’s nutritional awareness (4). The aim of the present study was to assess whether nutritional knowledge in pregnant women in Ireland is affected by socioeconomic status. One hundred and sixteen pregnant women aged 16–41 years (mean age of 29.5 years) were recruited at their initial antenatal booking visit (10–15 weeks gestation) at a large Dublin maternity hospital. …

Obesity Is An Independent Predictor Of Breastfeeding Initiation When Socioeconomic Status Is Controlled For, Annemarie Bennett, Daniel Mccartney, John Kearney Jan 2013

Obesity Is An Independent Predictor Of Breastfeeding Initiation When Socioeconomic Status Is Controlled For, Annemarie Bennett, Daniel Mccartney, John Kearney

Articles

Breastfeeding initiation rates vary across Europe, with rates as low as 56%(1) in Ireland and rates in excess of 90%(2) in the Nordic countries. A host of factors, including demographic, social, psychological and physical factors, influence the initiation, intensity and duration of breastfeeding. The extent to which modifiable factors influence breastfeeding initiation should be ascertained in order to prioritise support services for breastfeeding. Obesity is a known modifiable factor which inhibits breastfeeding initiation. This study aimed to determine the extent to which obesity inhibits breastfeeding initiation while controlling for socioeconomic status and other confounding factors. The Infant Cohort dataset from …

A Microfluidic Anti-Factor Xa Assay Device For Point-Of-Care Monitoring Of Anticoagulation Therapy, Leanne F. Harris, Paul Rainey, Vanessa Castro-Lopez, James S. O'Donnell, Anthony J. Killard Jan 2013

A Microfluidic Anti-Factor Xa Assay Device For Point-Of-Care Monitoring Of Anticoagulation Therapy, Leanne F. Harris, Paul Rainey, Vanessa Castro-Lopez, James S. O'Donnell, Anthony J. Killard

Articles

The development of new point-of-care coagulation assay devices is necessary due to the increasing number of patients requiring long-term anticoagulation in addition to the desire for appropriate, targeted anticoagulant therapy and a more rapid response to optimization of treatment. However, the majority of point-of-care devices currently available for hemostasis testing rely on clot-based endpoints which are variable and unreliable and are limited to measuring only certain portions of the coagulation pathway. There is a need for the introduction of point-of-care devices that can execute a broader range of tests; for example, the diagnosis of factor-specific diseases, as well as more …

Coagulation Monitoring Devices: Past, Present, And Future At The Point Of Care, Leanne F. Harris, Vanessa Castro-Lopez, Tony J. Killard

Articles

Automated technologies have revolutionised the monitoring of coagulation disorders in the central hospital laboratory setting, allowing for high throughput testing, improved accuracy and precision, accompanied by a marked reduction in human error. However, they still require trained operators and sample transportation. With the advent of point of care (POC) testing, the working principle of traditional coagulometers was used as the foundation for the development of miniaturised devices. A number of POC coagulation devices have been commercially available for many years now, allowing the patient to assume more control over the management of their own medication, e.g. warfarin. While POC devices …

Eating Soviet: Food And Culture In The Ussr, 1917–1991, Anton Masterovoy Jan 2013

Eating Soviet: Food And Culture In The Ussr, 1917–1991, Anton Masterovoy

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation argues that the best way to understand the nature of Soviet history is through the prism of food. Soviet citizens were encouraged to see the availability of food as the main measure of success for the construction of a new, Soviet civilization. The disappointment with the inability of the Soviet government to provide the quantity, quality and variety of food that the Soviet consumers expected was one of the major causes for the collapse of the USSR. The first chapter addresses the reasons why and how so unlikely a food as sausage became and remains the primary Russian …

Examining Religion And Spirituality As Diversity Training: A Multidimensional Look At Training In The American Psychological Association, Michael J. Vogel, Mark R. Mcminn, Mary A. Peterson, Kathleen Gathercoal

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

What sort of psychotherapeutic approaches might work well with a client who identifies as Muslim, and would they be different from what might work well with a client who identifies as Christian, a client who identifies as atheistic, or client who identifies as Buddhist? Despite ethical commitments to religiosity and spirituality training, it seems that most training programs in professional psychology have neglected to incorporate content from these areas of diversity into their curricula. The current study evaluated religious and spiritual diversity training in both APA-accredited doctoral programs and predoctoral internships, garnering the perspectives of 292 students, interns, faculty, and …

Spiritual Formation Training In The George Fox University Graduate Department Of Clinical Psychology, Mark R. Mcminn, Marie-Christine Goodworth, Joshua Shea Borrelli, Brian Lee Goetsch, Jessica Lee, Jens Uhder

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Spiritual formation training in the George Fox University Graduate Department of Clinical Psychology is described. An evangelical Quaker institution, the ethos of George Fox University is intended to foster experiential spiritual development and reflective self-awareness. In a 2008 curriculum revision the faculty attempted to strengthen the experiential dimensions of spiritual formation training even at the risk of reducing training in more academic dimensions of theology and integration. A 2013 program evaluation solicited student and alumni perspectives on the effectiveness of the spiritual formation training they received. Results of the program evaluation suggest areas for future development.

How does training in an explicitly Christian doctoral program in clinical psychology affect students' faith development? Two studies are reported that consider students' locus of control, spiritual perceptions, and religious behaviors over the course of training. The first study involved 157 students from 5 doctoral programs who completed questionnaires at the beginning and end of an academic year. A number of changes were reported from the beginning to the end of the year, including increased internal locus of control, decreased awareness of God. decreased church attendance, and decreased ratings on the importance of religion. A number of differences between cohorts …

Abstract

Aims

Central nervous system (CNS) malignancies and/or their treatment in pediatric cancer survivors are known to be associated with deficits in neuropsychological functions. We report findings from a nation-wide study of childhood cancer survivors to investigate intelligence and attention/concentration from a multi-dimensional perspective in a diverse sample from this population.

Main methods

Four hundred forty-four pediatric cancer survivors between 6 and 17 years of age, who had suffered CNS involvement associated with their malignancy, were evaluated. All patients completed a measure of general intelligence. Attention was measured by a continuous performance test (CPT) and by parental report using a …

Balancing Expectations, Emily Hervey Jan 2013

Balancing Expectations, Emily Hervey

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Starting a new year leads many of us to pause, reflecting on the one just finished and speculating on the one to come. We seem to have a natural tendency to set expectations for ourselves. But rarely does a year look the same in retrospect as it did at its introduction. Some hold exciting successes, others carry deep disappointments, and many have a combination of both. When life doesn’t unfold as planned, it is very easy to become discouraged or frustrated. Such emotions are perfectly normal, just as Proverbs 13:12 says, “Hope deferred makes the heart sick.” Yet there is …

Objective To determine the risk of concussion among youth football players (ages 8-12 years). Study design Participants included 468 male youth football players in western Pennsylvania during the 2011 youth football season. Incidence rates (IRs) and incidence density ratios (IDRs) of concussion were calculated for games and practices and for age groups. Results There was a total of 11 338 (8415 practice and 2923 game) athletic exposures (AEs) in the study period, during which 20 medically diagnosed concussions occurred. A majority of concussions were the result of head-to-head (45%) contact. The combined concussion IR for practices and games was 1.76 …

Where Do You Find That Your Thoughts Go When Facing Difficult Situations?, Emily Hervey Jan 2013

Where Do You Find That Your Thoughts Go When Facing Difficult Situations?, Emily Hervey

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

So often we find ourselves in circumstances outside our control. We speculate the outcome based on past experience and current information, often attempting to make accurate predictions of what will happen next. Kenya’s presidential election is a prime example, as the anxiety of many was influenced by the events that occurred in the last one. Worrying is a natural response when feeling uncertain. Sometimes the anxious ruminations become a habit, as even the small “unknowns” trigger our imaginations to consider countless possible outcomes. But no amount of worry will improve a situation; the only likely repercussions are the negative effects …

The Scholar And The Word Of God: Reflections On 2 Peter 1:16-21, Thomas Shepherd

Faculty Publications

The Scriptures are at the center of who we are as a people and as a body of scholars. In handling the Word of God, we are faced with choices that seem to pull us in two directions. On the one hand, faith and conviction call for expressions and actions that are loyal to trusted beliefs and traditions. On the other hand, scholarly methodologies demand objective impartiality and unbiased investigation leading to results that may challenge long held positions. I do not have the illusion that in a short presentation such as this I could even begin to resolve the …
