Of the 281 degree programs listed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency nationwide, those at community colleges accounted for 17 percent of the total. Using the interdisciplinary database of Academic Search Complete, a sample of 5,099 citations was collected from 146 articles published between 2002 and 2012. The most strongly represented disciplines revealed by the analysis were Social Science, Science/Technology and Medicine. A majority of citations (45%) came from academic journals, with nearly half (44%) of those from Social Science. When citing …

The Neglect Of Governance In Forest Sector Vulnerability Assessments: Structural-Functionalism And “Black Box” Problems In Climate Change Adaptation Planning, Adam Wellstead, Michael Howlett, Jeremy Rayner Jan 2013

The Neglect Of Governance In Forest Sector Vulnerability Assessments: Structural-Functionalism And “Black Box” Problems In Climate Change Adaptation Planning, Adam Wellstead, Michael Howlett, Jeremy Rayner

Department of Social Sciences Publications

Efforts to develop extensive forest-based climate change vulnerability assessments have informed proposed management and policy options intended to promote improved on-the-ground policy outcomes. These assessments are derived from a rich vulnerability literature and are helpful in modeling complex ecosystem interactions, yet their policy relevance and impact has been limited. We argue this is due to structural-functional logic underpinning these assessments in which governance is treated as a procedural “black box” and policy-making as an undifferentiated and unproblematic output of a political system responding to input changes and/or system prerequisites. Like an earlier generation of systems or cybernetic thinking about political …

Credit Rating Agencies In India: Have We Done Enough?, Himashu Bhushan

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Credit rating agencies (CRAs) exist to primarily evaluate the creditworthiness of corporate borrowers who directly seek funds from the public without going to a bank. This study seeks to review the developments of CRAs in India, taking into consideration the recent global financial crisis. Emphasis is placed on the existing and desired regulatory structure in India vis-à-vis the legislation in the United States (US) and the European Union (EU). In perspective, affixing liability to the CRA is seen as a prudent and a decisive step in checking the potential malfunctioning in the system. Likewise, it would be a welcome move …

Publishing Japan: A Visual Observation Of English-Language Publications Related To Japanese Studies¹, Tai Wei Lim

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This paper studies English-language publications related to the subject of Japanese Studies through visual observation and collection of brochures on display at a major field conference—the combined Association of Asian Studies (AAS) and International Convention on Asian Studies (ICAS) conferences in Hawaii from 30 March 2011 to 3 April 2011. While there are existing studies especially in English-language trade magazines on general developments in the publishing industry related to Japanese Studies, case studies examining book offerings in field-specific major conferences are comparatively fewer. In carrying out the observation studies for this paper, I had three goals in mind. First, I …

Feminism, Breastfeeding, And Society, Jen Bracken-Hull Jan 2013

Feminism, Breastfeeding, And Society, Jen Bracken-Hull

AWE (A Woman’s Experience)

A dichotomy exists among feminists regarding the views and contributions of breastfeeding. Across several waves of feminism women have argued for and against breastfeeding. Until recently, breastfeeding (regarding the bearing and nurturing of children) was seen as a responsibility that prevented women from participating in public circles. This article delineates the general contributions made by women who breastfeed including biological, social, emotional, and personal factors. Changes and accommodations are required for women who choose to breastfeed to not be disadvantaged.

George Paele Mossman’S Lalani Village As A Model For The Polynesian Cultural Center, Riley Moffat Jan 2013

George Paele Mossman’S Lalani Village As A Model For The Polynesian Cultural Center, Riley Moffat

Mormon Pacific Historical Society

As we consider the history and legacy of the Polynesian Cultural Center I think we ought to recognize that while the Center is in many ways unique in its development and purpose it was not the first attempt to create a cultural village with the goal of displaying and preserving Hawaiian culture. That honor goes to George Paele Mossman and his Lalani Village. Indeed, the Lalani Village can and probably was viewed as the model for what was attempted in La‘ie with the PCC.

“She Hath Wrought A Good Work”: The Anointing Of Jesus In Mark's Gospel, Julie M. Smith Jan 2013

“She Hath Wrought A Good Work”: The Anointing Of Jesus In Mark's Gospel, Julie M. Smith

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

In silence, an unnamed woman approaches Jesus and pours ointment on his head. Responding to criticism from his disciples, Jesus not only defends the woman's actions but states that wherever the gospel is preached, her story will be told as a memorial of her (Mark 14:9). This enigmatic story has, surprisingly, received very little comment from biblical scholars over the centuries. Yet it is a veritable treasure trove of insight into the person of Jesus and his ministry: (1) anointing was, as Jesus himself explains, a preparation for his burial. Both Jesus and the woman who anoints him understand that …

Trusting Joseph, Neal Rappleye Jan 2013

Trusting Joseph, Neal Rappleye

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The “first steps” of Mormon history are vital to the faith claims of the Latter-day Saints. The new volume Exploring the First Vision, edited by Samuel Alonzo Dodge and Steven C. Harper, compiles research into the historical veracity of Joseph Smith’s First Vision narrative which shows the Prophet to have been a reliable and trustworthy witness. Ultimately, historical investigation can neither prove nor disprove that Joseph had a theophany in the woods in 1820. Individuals must therefore reach their conclusions by some other means.

Sealings And Mercies: Moroni's Final Exhortations In Moroni 10, James E. Faulconer Jan 2013

Sealings And Mercies: Moroni's Final Exhortations In Moroni 10, James E. Faulconer

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

This is not an essay in the usual sense. Instead, it is a close reading of Moroni 10, looking verse by verse at what Mornoi might be teaching us. The overarching question is, to what does Moroni exhort us as he seals his book and writes his final words? Examining each of Morni's eight exhortations, Faulconer shows one way to study scriptures and perhaps to think about them afresh. In addition to the importantadmonition to pray about the truth of the Book of Mormon, he sees in this chapter a message of God's mercy and of our need for charity.

The Zoramites And Costly Apparel: Symbolism And Irony, Parrish Brady, Shon Hopkin Jan 2013

The Zoramites And Costly Apparel: Symbolism And Irony, Parrish Brady, Shon Hopkin

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The Zoramite narratives of Alma 31-35 and Alma 43-44 are richly symbolic accounts woven with many subtle details regarding the imporatnce of costly apparel and riches as an outward evidence of pride. This literary analysis focuses on how Mormon as editor structured the Zoramite narrative and used clothing as a metaphor to show the dangers of pride and the blessings afforded by humble adherence to God's teachings and covenants. The Zoramite's pride--as evidenced by their focus on costly apparel, gold, silver, and fine goods (Alma 31:24-25, 28)--competes with the foundational Book of Mormon teaching that the obedient will “ prosper …
