The Cinematic Experience Through The Micro-Budget Paradigm, Jeffrey Lehman Jan 2013

The Cinematic Experience Through The Micro-Budget Paradigm, Jeffrey Lehman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Tailor’s Apprentice is a feature-length, micro-budget, narrative digital motion picture, written, produced and directed by Jeffrey Lehman in partial fulfillment of the requirements of earning a Master of Fine Arts in Film from the University of Central Florida. The film is a result of applying specific monetary, logistical and creative limitations to the production process in order to contribute in defining the micro-budget aesthetic, resulting in a final shared cinematic audience experience. This thesis is a record of all stages from conception to completion of the executed, feature length film with-in the micro-budget production paradigm.

The Politics Of The Righteous: A Religious And Political History Of Conservative Neo-Evangelicals In Central Florida, Rustin Lloyd Jan 2013

The Politics Of The Righteous: A Religious And Political History Of Conservative Neo-Evangelicals In Central Florida, Rustin Lloyd

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 1953 a small, seemingly insignificant, church was founded in Winter Park, Florida. By the early 1970s, Calvary Assembly of God, a church that had started with a dirt floor, was declared one of the fastest growing churches in America with membership easily reaching over several thousands.1 In the late 1970s and 1980s, it became a major religious and political force in central Florida so much so that it had received visits from then presidential hopefuls Pat Robertson and Vice President George Bush. The changes that took place at Calvary Assembly, both politically and religiously, provided a microcosm of the …

Extensions Of S-Spaces, Bernd Losert Jan 2013

Extensions Of S-Spaces, Bernd Losert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Given a convergence space X, a continuous action of a convergence semigroup S on X and a compactification Y of X, under what conditions on X and the action on X is it possible to extend the action to a continuous action on Y . Similarly, given a Cauchy space X, a Cauchy continuous action of a Cauchy semigroup S on X and a completion Y of X, under what conditions on X and the action on X is it possible to extend the action to a Cauchy continuous action on Y . We answer the first question for some …

Beam Deflection, Matthias Münnich, Jan 2013

Beam Deflection, Matthias Münnich,

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to fully understand the third order nonlinear optical response of materials under high irradiance excitation it is necessary to study the temporal and polarization dependence of nonlinear refraction and absorption. There are several existing approaches such as Z-scan and pump-probe techniques to determine those responses. As part of this work, these approaches will be briefly outlined before presenting beam deflection, applied from photothermal beam deflection, as an alternative experimental technique to determine the nonlinear refraction with its temporal and polarization dynamics. This technique measures the angle of the probe beam deflected via the index gradient of the material …

The President's Party At The Midterm: An Aggregate And Individual-Level Analysis Of Seat Loss And Vote Choice In U.S. House Elections, David Macdonald Jan 2013

The President's Party At The Midterm: An Aggregate And Individual-Level Analysis Of Seat Loss And Vote Choice In U.S. House Elections, David Macdonald

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of midterm U.S. House elections using a multi-level research design. At the aggregate-level, multiple regression analysis is used to examine the variables that affect seat loss for the president’s party. This integrates, updates and extends the extant literature of the topic, and offers a means of explaining and predicting seat losses by the president’s party in the U.S. House. To further probe the findings at the aggregatelevel, the thesis develops a pooled cross-sectional model of individual-level vote choice in midterm U.S. House elections using data from the American National Election Studies (1982- 2002) and …

A Study Of The Implementation Of The Executive Ed. D. In Educational Leadership At The University Of Central Florida 2010-2013: A Professional Practice Doctorate, Nicole Marsh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study conducted at the University of Central Florida was of two-fold importance. First, information gathered via this study has served to continually improve the rigor and relevancy of the curriculum and program requirements to issues in education. Second, the research findings from this study served to move forward the national and increasingly international efforts to improve the Ed. D. and other professional practice doctorate programs. The review of literature was organized to present an introduction for the conceptual framework of the efforts to distinguish between the Ph. D. and Ed. D. and strengthen the education doctorate overall. The review …

Disturbance-Based Management And Plant Species Change In Massachusetts Sandplain Heathlands Over The Past Two Decades, Kirsten Martin Jan 2013

Disturbance-Based Management And Plant Species Change In Massachusetts Sandplain Heathlands Over The Past Two Decades, Kirsten Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Massachusetts sandplain heathlands are habitats of conservation concern, harboring many rare plant species and providing habitat for animals that depend on openlands. These heathlands are threatened by human development, shrub encroachment in the absence of disturbance, and potentially increasing soil nutrient levels. Sandplain heathlands are managed with prescribed fire, in order to maintain their open structure and maintain species diversity. In order to assess how past management was correlated with species change, I used a data set that spanned twenty years from three different heathlands in Massachusetts. I looked for correlations between management and species change. Correlations between species change …

Framing, Public Relations, And Scientology: An Analysis Of News Coverage And A Controversial Organization, Kristy Mcallister Jan 2013

Framing, Public Relations, And Scientology: An Analysis Of News Coverage And A Controversial Organization, Kristy Mcallister

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the most common frames used in news coverage of the Church of Scientology from 2009 to 2013. Using textual analysis, with framing and public relations theories as lenses, this study examined recent news coverage – both print and television – to identify frames used, and the potential public relations crises the Church is currently facing due to this media exposure. Analysis showed three major frames used during coverage, along with their corresponding sub-frames, which highlight certain aspects of the frame: Culture of Abuse (Imprisonment, Controlling, Family Disconnection, Exploitation of Children, Violence, and Financial Abuse), The Information Paradox …

Kant On Formal Modality, Ian Blecher Jan 2013

Kant On Formal Modality, Ian Blecher

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

I propose to explain Kant’s novel claim, in the Critique of Pure Reason, that all judgments have a formal modality. I begin by distinguishing the modality of a judgment’s form from the modality of its content, and I suggest that the former is peculiar in merely affecting the subject’s understanding of his own act of judging. I then contrast the modal account of such an understanding (in terms of the possibility and actuality of a judgment) with the traditional, non-modal understanding of it (in terms of the giving and withholding of assent). I conclude by suggesting that Kant prefers …

Between Law And Markets: Is There A Role For Culture And Ethics In Financial Regulation?, Dan Awrey, William Blair, David Kershaw Jan 2013

Between Law And Markets: Is There A Role For Culture And Ethics In Financial Regulation?, Dan Awrey, William Blair, David Kershaw

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

The limits of markets as mechanisms for constraining socially suboptimal behavior are well documented. Simultaneously, conventional approaches toward the law and regulation are often crude and ineffective mechanisms for containing the social costs of market failure. So where do we turn when both law and markets fail to live up to their social promise? Two possible answers are culture and ethics. In theory, both can help constrain socially undesirable behavior in the vacuum between law and markets. In practice, however, both exhibit manifest shortcomings.

To many, this analysis may portend the end of the story. From our perspective, however, it …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: The literature reports the efficacy of the laparoscopic approach to paraesophageal hiatal hernia repair. However, its adoption as the preferred surgical approach and the risks associated with paraesophageal hiatal hernia repair have not been reviewed in a large database.

METHOD: The Nationwide Inpatient Sample dataset was queried from 1998 to 2005 for patients who underwent repair of a complicated (the entire stomach moves into the chest cavity) versus uncomplicated (only the upper part of the stomach protrudes into the chest) paraesophageal hiatal hernia via the laparoscopic, open abdominal, or open thoracic approach. A multivariate analysis was performed controlling for …

Argentina's Right To Be Forgotten, Edward L. Carter Jan 2013

Argentina's Right To Be Forgotten, Edward L. Carter

Emory International Law Review

Actresses, models and athletes have brought some two hundred lawsuits, most filed by the lawyer Adolfo Martín Leguizamón Peña, against Google and Yahoo to demand removal of Internet search results and links to photographs. Many of the plaintiffs allege that Internet search results improperly associate their photographs-some of which are sexually suggestive and which were presumably taken and posted originally with permission-with pornography or prostitution.

Babies Without Borders: Human Rights, Human Dignity, And The Regulation Of International Commercial Surrogacy, Yasmine Ergas Jan 2013

Babies Without Borders: Human Rights, Human Dignity, And The Regulation Of International Commercial Surrogacy, Yasmine Ergas

Emory International Law Review

In recent decades, a robust international market in commercial reproductive surrogacy has emerged. But, as German citizens Jan Balaz and Susan Lohle discovered when they struggled to engineer the last-minute diplomatic compromise that saved their commissioned twins from becoming wards of the Indian state, conflicts among legal frameworks have placed the children born at risk of being "marooned stateless and parentless."

Contextualizing Military Necessity, Nobuo Hayashi Jan 2013

Contextualizing Military Necessity, Nobuo Hayashi

Emory International Law Review

Modern theories correctly reject the Kriegsräson doctrine, according to which the laws of war do not override the necessities of war and it is rather the latter that override the former. One such theory holds that unqualified rules of international humanitarian law ("IHL") exclude military necessity being invoked de novo as a ground for deviation therefrom, yet not as a ground for additional restraint thereon. This theory--let us call it "counter-Kriegsräson"-is unacceptable for two reasons.

Ensuring The Effective Prosecution Of Sexually Violent Crimes In The Bosnian War Crimes Chamber: Applying Lessons From The Icty, Courtney Ginn Jan 2013

Ensuring The Effective Prosecution Of Sexually Violent Crimes In The Bosnian War Crimes Chamber: Applying Lessons From The Icty, Courtney Ginn

Emory International Law Review

Despite the extensive use of sexual violence as a weapon in war throughout history, the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was the first international tribunal to develop criminal jurisprudence concerning sexual violence. Although the ICTY expanded criminal liability for sexually violent acts committed during the Yugoslav Wars to an unprecedented extent, the conviction rate for sexually violent crimes was much lower than the conviction rate for other crime.

Transitional Justice For Tojo's Japan: The United States Role In The Establishment Of The International Military Tribunal For The Far East And Other Transitional Justice Mechanisms For Japan After World War Ii, Zachary D. Kaufman

Emory International Law Review

Although the creation of the first international war crimes tribunal-the International Military Tribunal (IMT), also known as the Nuremberg Tribunal-has been the focus of significant scholarly attention, much less academic analysis has concentrated on the establishment of the second such body-the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE), also known as the Tokyo Tribunal.

Norms Governing The Interstate Use Of Force: Explaining The Status Quo Bias Of International Law, Richard Hanania Jan 2013

Norms Governing The Interstate Use Of Force: Explaining The Status Quo Bias Of International Law, Richard Hanania

Emory International Law Review

It is generally held that states interact with one another in a state of anarchy, at least when it comes to national security. After defining international law, I show that this is not completely accurate. Reflecting a status quo bias, classic invasions and territorial aggrandizement through force are illegal. Since 1945, states that have undertaken classic invasions have generally been sanctioned, and no state has taken territory from another by force since 1976.

Chinese Currency Manipulation: Are There Any Solutions?, Laurence Howard Jan 2013

Chinese Currency Manipulation: Are There Any Solutions?, Laurence Howard

Emory International Law Review

Politicians often bellow about currency manipulation in an attempt to prove their toughness on foreign policy. All too often these politicians seem under- informed about the subject. In recent years, a substantial amount of political rhetoric in the United States has been aimed at addressing the "problem" of Chinese currency manipulation. Upon investigation, all of the proposed solutions prove inadequate, whether they call for greater cooperation with multi-national organizations, unilateral actions, or simple diplomacy.

Identification Of A Histidine Metal Ligand In The Arge-Encoded N-Acetyl-L-Ornithine Deacetylase From Escherichia Coli, Wade C. Mcgregor, Danuta M. Gillner, Sabina I. Swierczek, Dali Liu, Richard C. Holz Jan 2013

Identification Of A Histidine Metal Ligand In The Arge-Encoded N-Acetyl-L-Ornithine Deacetylase From Escherichia Coli, Wade C. Mcgregor, Danuta M. Gillner, Sabina I. Swierczek, Dali Liu, Richard C. Holz

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The H355A, H355K, H80A, and H80K mutant enzymes of the argE-encoded N-acetyl-L-ornithine deacetylase (ArgE) from Escherichia coli were prepared, however, only the H355A enzyme was found to be soluble. Kinetic analysis of the Co(II)-loaded H355A exhibited activity levels that were 380-fold less than Co(II)-loaded WT ArgE. Electronic absorption spectra of Co(II)-loaded H355A-ArgE indicate that the bound Co(II) ion resides in a distorted, five-coordinate environment and Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) data for Zn(II) binding to the H355A enzyme provided a dissociation constant (Kd) of 39 μM. A three-dimensional homology model of ArgE was generated using the …

Candida Albicans Induces Arginine Biosynthetic Genes In Response To Host-Derived Reactive Oxygen Species, Claudia Jimenez-Lopez, John R. Collette, Kimberly M. Brothers, Kelly M. Shepardson, Robert A. Kramer Jan 2013

Candida Albicans Induces Arginine Biosynthetic Genes In Response To Host-Derived Reactive Oxygen Species, Claudia Jimenez-Lopez, John R. Collette, Kimberly M. Brothers, Kelly M. Shepardson, Robert A. Kramer

Dartmouth Scholarship

The interaction of Candida albicans with phagocytes of the host's innate immune system is highly dynamic, and its outcome directly impacts the progression of infection. While the switch to hyphal growth within the macrophage is the most obvious physiological response, much of the genetic response reflects nutrient starvation: translational repression and induction of alternative carbon metabolism. Changes in amino acid metabolism are not seen, with the striking exception of arginine biosynthesis, which is upregulated in its entirety during coculture with macrophages. Using single-cell reporters, we showed here that arginine biosynthetic genes are induced specifically in phagocytosed cells. This induction is …

Effective Field Theory Approach To Gravitationally Induced Decoherence, M. P. Blencowe Jan 2013

Effective Field Theory Approach To Gravitationally Induced Decoherence, M. P. Blencowe

Dartmouth Scholarship

Adopting the viewpoint that the standard perturbative quantization of general relativity provides an effective description of quantum gravity that is valid at ordinary energies, we show that gravity as an environment induces the rapid decoherence of stationary matter superposition states when the energy differences in the superposition exceed the Planck energy scale.

The Teacher As Servant-Leader, David W. Anderson Jan 2013

The Teacher As Servant-Leader, David W. Anderson

International Christian Community of Teacher Educators Journal

Any Christian philosophy of education must begin with acknowledging God to be the Creator of all that is, and as the source of all Truth. All knowledge is derived from, or in some way related to, the Creator God. Three elements that inform our understanding of education are:

  • our having been created in the image of God;
  • the creation mandate; and
  • the principle of stewardship.

The fact that humans are created in the image of God (Ge 1:26-27) sets the stage for our educability. Essential to our understanding of that image are such attributes as language (communication), reasoning, imaginative and …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Although the adenoma detection rate is used as a measure of colonoscopy quality, there are limited data on the quality of endoscopic resection of detected adenomas. We determined the rate of incompletely resected neoplastic polyps in clinical practice. We performed a prospective study on 1427 patients who underwent colonoscopy at 2 medical centers and had at least 1 nonpedunculated polyp (5-20 mm). After polyp removal was considered complete macroscopically, biopsies were obtained from the resection margin. The main outcome was the percentage of incompletely resected neoplastic polyps (incomplete resection rate [IRR]) determined by the presence of neoplastic tissue in post-polypectomy biopsies. …

Ownership And Obligations: The Human Flourishing Theory Of Property, Gregory S. Alexander Jan 2013

Ownership And Obligations: The Human Flourishing Theory Of Property, Gregory S. Alexander

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Private property ordinarily triggers notions of individual rights, not social obligations. The core image of property rights, in the minds of most people, is that the owner has a right to exclude others and owes no further obligation to them. That image is highly misleading. Property owners owe far more responsibilities to others, both owners and non-owners, than the conventional imagery of property rights suggests. Property rights are inherently relational, and because of this characteristic, owners necessarily owe obligations to others. But the responsibility, or obligation, dimension of private ownership has been sorely under-theorised. Inherent in the concept of ownership …
