Iterative Unbiased Fir State Estimation: A Review Of Algorithms, Yuriy S. Shmaliy, Daniel J. Simon Jan 2013

Iterative Unbiased Fir State Estimation: A Review Of Algorithms, Yuriy S. Shmaliy, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, we develop in part and review various iterative unbiased finite impulse response (UFIR) algorithms (both direct and two-stage) for the filtering, smoothing, and prediction of time-varying and time-invariant discrete state-space models in white Gaussian noise environments. The distinctive property of UFIR algorithms is that noise statistics are completely ignored. Instead, an optimal window size is required for optimal performance. We show that the optimal window size can be determined via measurements with no reference. UFIR algorithms are computationally more demanding than Kalman filters, but this extra computational effort can be alleviated with parallel computing, and the extra …

Biogeography-Based Optimization For Hydraulic Prosthetic Knee Control, Tim Wilmot, George Thomas, Berney Montavon, Rick Rarick, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, Steve Szatmary, Daniel J. Simon, William Smith, Sergey Samorezov Jan 2013

Biogeography-Based Optimization For Hydraulic Prosthetic Knee Control, Tim Wilmot, George Thomas, Berney Montavon, Rick Rarick, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, Steve Szatmary, Daniel J. Simon, William Smith, Sergey Samorezov

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We discuss open-loop control development and simulation results for a newly-developed cyber-physical system (CPS) used as a semi-active, above-knee prosthesis. The control signal of our CPS consists of two hydraulic valve settings that control a linear cylinder actuator and provide torque to the prosthetic knee. We develop open-loop control using biogeography-based optimization (BBO), which is a recently developed evolutionary algorithm. The research contributes to the field of cyber-physical systems by showing that it is possible to find effective open-loop control signals for our newly proposed semi-active hydraulic knee prosthesis through a dual-system optimization process which includes both human and robot …

Byzantine Fault Tolerance For Session-Oriented Multi-Tiered Applications, Hua Chai, Wenbing Zhao Jan 2013

Byzantine Fault Tolerance For Session-Oriented Multi-Tiered Applications, Hua Chai, Wenbing Zhao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This article presents a lightweight Byzantine fault tolerance (BFT) framework for session-oriented multi-tiered applications. We conclude that it is sufficient to use a lightweight BFT algorithm instead of a traditional BFT algorithm, based on a comprehensive study of the threat model to, and the state model of, the session-oriented multi-tiered applications. The lightweight BFT algorithm uses source ordering, rather than total ordering, of incoming requests to achieve Byzantine fault tolerant state-machine replication of such type of applications. The performance of the lightweight BFT framework is evaluated using a shopping cart application prototype built on the web services platform. The same …

Detection Of Prostate Specific Antigen In Serum At The Femto-Gram Per Milliliter Level Using The Intrinsic Amplification Of A Field-Effect Enzymatic Immuno-Sensing System, Jiapeng Wang, Siu-Tung Yau Jan 2013

Detection Of Prostate Specific Antigen In Serum At The Femto-Gram Per Milliliter Level Using The Intrinsic Amplification Of A Field-Effect Enzymatic Immuno-Sensing System, Jiapeng Wang, Siu-Tung Yau

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Ultrasensitive detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA) has been achieved by applying the field-effectenzymatic detection (FEED) technique to the sandwich immuno-sensing technique. The voltage-controlled intrinsic amplification provided by FEED enabled the detection of PSA contained in serumon the femto-gram/mL level. Two electrochemical approaches used to obtain the amperometric detec-tion signal resulted in similar detection limits and sensitivities. The lowest PSA detection limit achievedwas 27 fg mL-1. The high selectivity of the detection system was reflected in the fact that PSA detectionwas successful on the fg mL-1level, where biological substances other than PSA had a 1-million-foldhigher concentration. Electron transfer through the …

Voltage-Controlled Enzyme-Catalyzed Glucose–Gluconolactone Conversion Using A Field-Effect Enzymatic Detector, Siu-Tung Yau, Yan Xu, Yang Song, Ye Feng, Jiapeng Wanga Jan 2013

Voltage-Controlled Enzyme-Catalyzed Glucose–Gluconolactone Conversion Using A Field-Effect Enzymatic Detector, Siu-Tung Yau, Yan Xu, Yang Song, Ye Feng, Jiapeng Wanga

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The field-effect enzymatic detection (FEED) technique was used to control the kinetics of the enzymatic conversion of glucose to gluconolactone. The glucose–gluconolactone conversion occurring at an enzyme-immobilized electrode, a well-studied process, was confirmed using mass spectrometry. Electrochemical studies showed that the glucose oxidation current depends on the gating voltage VG and the ion concentration of the sample solution. Additionally, the depletion of glucose in the sample also showed a dependence on VG. FEED was used to detect H2O2 on the zepto-molar level in order to show the ultrasensitive detection capability of the technique. These results, while providing evidence for the …

Complex System Optimization Using Biogeography-Based Optimization, Dawei Du, Dan Simon Jan 2013

Complex System Optimization Using Biogeography-Based Optimization, Dawei Du, Dan Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Complex systems are frequently found in modern industry. But with their multisubsystems, multiobjectives, and multiconstraints, the optimization of complex systems is extremely hard. In this paper, a new algorithm adapted from biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is introduced for complex system optimization. BBO/Complex is the combination of BBO with a multiobjective ranking system, an innovative migration approach, and effective diversity control. Based on comparisons with three complex system optimization algorithms (multidisciplinary feasible (MDF), individual discipline feasible (IDF), and collaborative optimization (CO)) on four real-world benchmark problems, BBO/Complex demonstrates competitive performance. BBO/Complex provides the best performance in three of the benchmark problems and …

A Decade Of Aid: The Increase, Impact And Alternative To Foreign Aid, Ryan Piers Jan 2013

A Decade Of Aid: The Increase, Impact And Alternative To Foreign Aid, Ryan Piers

Masters Theses

The first term of George H.W. Bush's presidency saw an increase in governmentally distributed foreign aid unparalleled in United States' history. This increase came at time in which the debate over the practicality of foreign aid had never been higher amongst academics. Historically, there are two separate branches of research in the study of foreign aid. The first examines the effects of the practice, while the other investigates the determinants of foreign aid, namely which donors give to which recipients and why. This study is twofold in a sense that it touches on both topics.

This thesis analyzed President George …

Ideologies Of Literacy, "Academic Literacies," And Composition Studies., Bruce Horner Jan 2013

Ideologies Of Literacy, "Academic Literacies," And Composition Studies., Bruce Horner

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In my contribution to this symposium, I take up the call of this journal in its mission statement for “new interactions between Literacy and Composition Studies.” From the framework of competing ideologies of literacy, I explore points of intersection as well as divergence between strands of what’s known as “composition studies” and what has come to be identified as the “academic literacies” approach to academic literacy. My focus on “academic literacies” rather than the broader area of literacy studies signals at least three of my biases: first, I wish to counter the tendency to allow the cultural norm for academic …

Freeze Tolerance Conferred By Transgenic Expression Of Late Embryogenesis Abundant Protein In Insect Cells, Alyssa N. Walser Jan 2013

Freeze Tolerance Conferred By Transgenic Expression Of Late Embryogenesis Abundant Protein In Insect Cells, Alyssa N. Walser

Masters Theses

Anhydrobiotic organisms such as the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana have developed strategies to survive and thrive under conditions of limited water availability. One strategy is the accumulation of late embryo genesis abundant (LEA) proteins. Cells of Drosophila melanogaster (Kc167), which had previously been genetically modified to express a group 1 LEA protein (LEA1.3) found in A. franciscana, were used to test the impact of water stress due to freezing to -80°C. Two different freezing devices were used to determine the impact of the freezing protocol on the viability of cells after freezing and thawing. The first method used a 12-well …

Seventy Years Of The African American Male Experience At Eastern Illinois University, Rovion D. Reed

Masters Theses

Using qualitative methodology the researcher analyzed the lived experiences of seven African American men who attended Eastern Illinois University over the past seven decades including one who is currently enrolled. Data was collected by conducting archival research as well and semi-structured interviews. Overall participants reported having good experiences at Eastern Illinois University. The participants' experiences were categorized into seven themes including faculty or staff relations, race relations, intra-racial relations, campus involvement, mentoring, campus climate, and Black Greek organizations. In addition, minor themes were also discovered including only-ness, lowered expectations, positive influence of student organizations, and sense of care from mentors.

Consumer Behavior Relationship Between Mothers And Their Adult Daughters, Helen M. Marcotte Jan 2013

Consumer Behavior Relationship Between Mothers And Their Adult Daughters, Helen M. Marcotte

Masters Theses

The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the consumer behavior relationship between mothers and their adult daughters. Intergenerational influences (IGI), communication patterns, and the length of time adult daughters lived with their mothers are variables explored in this study. The results of this study suggested that, although the adult daughter seems to have a meaningful relationship with her mother, the only significant correlation was between mother-daughter communication patterns and the mother's role in her adult daughter's consumer behavior.

Relationship Between Fundamental Movement Skills And Body Mass Index In Rural Elementary Age Children, Mariah L. Bolin Jan 2013

Relationship Between Fundamental Movement Skills And Body Mass Index In Rural Elementary Age Children, Mariah L. Bolin

Masters Theses

A factor of how much physical activity a child gets could be determined by the level of mastery of fundamental movement skills that are needed for the establishment of skills used in many forms of adult physical activity. Children who master a number of fundamental movement skills are more likely to be physically active and they also may be more likely to take part in physical activity when being compared to peers with a lesser level of motor skill proficiency. Children who are considered overweight tend to engage less often in physical activities, which in turn may prevents them from …

Effects Of Combining Whole Body Vibration And Moderately-Heavy Back Squat On Vertical Jump Height In Collegiate Level Volleyball Players, Franklin M. Benik

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine whether a combination of a low volume, moderately-heavy (80% 1RM) back squat combined with whole body vibration would optimize the post activation potentiation (PAP) response compared to a set of low volume, moderately-heavy back squat without vibration in Division I collegiate female volleyball players. The study design consisted of two groups (n = 5, n = 5) of current Eastern Illinois University female volleyball players matched by 1RM back squat strength. Prior to the experimental intervention, subjects in each group attended two sessions during which standing reach height and demographic information ( …

Improving The Rate Of Voluntary Compliance In Investigative Police Reporting Through The Application Of A Training Model And Job Aid, Kent D. Martin Jan 2013

Improving The Rate Of Voluntary Compliance In Investigative Police Reporting Through The Application Of A Training Model And Job Aid, Kent D. Martin

Masters Theses

This study examines the immediate effect of a training module and job-aid on the percentage of police reports that lack pertinent information relating to the identity and contact information for suspects, witnesses and victims. A random sampling of reports was examined to determine if the initial responding officer obtained all available information needed to identify and contact these individuals for further investigation.

This analysis resulted in the creation of a training module, which was provided to all members of the patrol division. The module included a job aid to which each officer could refer during the report writing process. An …

A Phenomenological Investigation Of The Resident Assistant Position And Occupational Stress And Burnout, Kelsey J. Brandt

Masters Theses

Utilizing qualitative methodology, participants' perceptions were examined to understand Resident Assistants' (RA) roles in relation to occupational stress and burnout, and the different coping mechanisms utilized by each of the six participants. Through conducting one-on-one interviews with RAs, it was found that participants experienced occupational stress and burnout from several influencers within the position. Participant's occupational stress was influenced by relational stress, administrative stress, boundary stress, and staff stress. Residents, administrative tasks/repetitiveness, staff, and recognition lead to feelings of burnout. Participants recommended taking personal time, maintaining social support, and avoiding procrastination as coping strategies for managing occupational stress and burnout. …

Separating The Whites From The Chaff: Whiteness, Blackness, Racial Exclusion In The Midwest Agrarian Mind, Philip Mohr Jan 2013

Separating The Whites From The Chaff: Whiteness, Blackness, Racial Exclusion In The Midwest Agrarian Mind, Philip Mohr

Masters Theses

This thesis approaches the construction of race through the vantage of one agrarian magazine, the Prairie Farmer. It analyzes the rhetoric of the people who wrote for this magazine to distinguish changing attitudes toward whiteness and blackness in the rural and agricultural Midwest from the end of the Civil War to the Great Migration. While whiteness was equated with what the Prairie Farmer saw as the active, progressive farmer, blackness was associated with stupidity, laziness, and threat to property. From this, the thesis argues we can build a base of knowledge from which to analyze the roots of racism …

The Advancement Of European Security Integration, Rachel Anne Dicke Jan 2013

The Advancement Of European Security Integration, Rachel Anne Dicke

Masters Theses

For almost a decade and a half the European Union has been steadily developing as a global security actor, attempting to unify disparate national security polices into a more coherent, European security policy. The progress of European Security Integration (ESI) is the subject of this thesis, and has been examined in terms of three critical elements. By studying an EU-level defense institution, several individual member states, and an EU-led crisis management operation, a more comprehensive sense of the process could be obtained. The European Defence Agency is analyzed in Chapter 2, followed by the states Denmark, Sweden, and Finland in …

Demographics Of A Commercially Exploited Population Of Flathead Catfish (Pylodictis Olivaris) In The Wabash River, Cassi Jo Moody-Carpenter Jan 2013

Demographics Of A Commercially Exploited Population Of Flathead Catfish (Pylodictis Olivaris) In The Wabash River, Cassi Jo Moody-Carpenter

Masters Theses

Flathead catfish, Pylodictis olivaris, are a popular game and commercial fish in the Midwestern United States. In the lower 322 km of the Wabash River, flathead catfish are commercially and recreationally harvested by Illinois and Indiana fishers. Current management regulations are different between the two states; Illinois and Indiana have minimum length limits of 381 and 254 mm, respectively. Indiana has proposed changing their minimum length limit to 381 mm and allowing only one fish> 889 mm to be harvested per day. My study examined the current status of flathead catfish in the Wabash River to determine a standardized …
