Going Offline: Personality And Its Effects On The Transition Of Online Relationships To The Offline World, Morgan Johnson
Going Offline: Personality And Its Effects On The Transition Of Online Relationships To The Offline World, Morgan Johnson
Honors Program Theses
Because the internet is a relatively new technology, few studies have researched the correlations between online behavior and personality. As such, this study set out to determine if online friendships and personality are related. In this study differences in personality were examined between individuals who have met their online friends face-to-face and those who have not. A survey was distributed online using the Five Factor Model to measure personality. Participants in this study were recruited from an online community called Nerdfighteria. The results found that the facets of the Five Factor Model of personality were largely found not to be …

Clean Up Our Home: Ellen Swallow Richards' Human Ecology And Emerging Environmental Ideologies, 1890-1915, Raeann Lillian Swanson
Honors Program Theses
In the late 1880s, after years of study and hard work, Ellen Richards began publishing her ideas on the home and the natural and urban environment. She called for the knowledge of basic scientific principles to be available to everyone. She believed that ignorance was holding back the public from altering their environment to make life healthier, happier, and safer. Over one hundred years later, Malcolm Gladwell wrote the book The Tipping Point. In his book, Gladwell explores the Broken Windows Theory that social scientists claimed they developed in the 1980s. The Broken Windows Theory states that there is a …
Uni's Dance Craze: A Psychological Analysis And Creative Documentary On 'The Interlude Dance' And 'The Dance Party', Ian Goldsmith
Uni's Dance Craze: A Psychological Analysis And Creative Documentary On 'The Interlude Dance' And 'The Dance Party', Ian Goldsmith
Honors Program Theses
The UNI campus has been part of an epidemic: a dance epidemic. “The Interlude Dance” and “The Dance Party” are two recent dance phenomena that have played a major role in my undergraduate experience. I sought to study these phenomena through an analytical approach. I sought to determine the psychosocial factors that lead to the initial and continuing success of “The Interlude Dance” and “The Dance Party”, and to build conceptual connections between both phenomena. This creative-research hybrid project culminated in a documentary short-film.
Effective Rnai-Mediated Β2-Microglobulin Loss Of Function By Transgenesis In Xenopus Laevis, Hristina Nedelkovska, Eva-Stina Edholm, Nikesha Haynes, Jacques Robert
Effective Rnai-Mediated Β2-Microglobulin Loss Of Function By Transgenesis In Xenopus Laevis, Hristina Nedelkovska, Eva-Stina Edholm, Nikesha Haynes, Jacques Robert
Biology
To impair MHC class I (class I) function in vivo in the amphibian Xenopus, we developed an effective reverse genetic loss of function approach by combining I-SceI meganucleasemediated transgenesis with RNAi technology. We generated transgenic outbred X. laevis and isogenetic laevis/gilli cloned lines with stably silenced expression of β2-microglobulin (b2m) critical for class I function. Transgenic F1 frogs exhibited decreased surface class I expression on erythrocytes and lymphocytes, decreased frequency of peripheral CD8 T cells and impaired CD8 T cell-mediated skin allograft rejection. Additionally, b2m knockdown increased susceptibility to viral infection of F0 transgenic larvae. This loss of function strategy …
Transience And Constancy Of Interactions In A Plant-Frugivore Network, Suann Yang, Reka Albert, Tomas A. Carlo
Transience And Constancy Of Interactions In A Plant-Frugivore Network, Suann Yang, Reka Albert, Tomas A. Carlo
Biology
Plant-animal mutualistic interactions such as frugivory and seed dispersal display great variation in time due to fluctuations in fruit abundance, animal abundance, and behavior. In particular, some species participate in interactions with other species only transiently, while other species are active for longer periods of time. Species with a longer period of activity are able to interact with more species, and thus engage in constant participation in an interaction network. Species with high constancy would thus be expected to help maintain the biodiversity of a community; however, the manner in which constant species link to their partners may be critical …

Review Of Recent Studies And Issues Regarding The P300-Based Complex Trial Protocol For Detection Of Concealed Information, J. Peter Rosenfeld, Xiaoqing Hu, Elena Labkovsky, John B. Meixner Jr., Michael R. Winograd
Scholarly Works
In this review, the evolution of new P300-based protocols for detection of concealed information is summarized. The P300-based complex trial protocol (CTP) is described as one such countermeasure (CM)-resistant protocol. Recent lapses in diagnostic accuracy (from 90% to 75%) with CTPs applied to mock crime protocols are summarized, as well as recent enhancements to the CTP which have restored accuracy. These enhancements include 1) use of performance feedback during testing, 2) use of other ERP components such as N200 in diagnosis, 3) use of auxiliary tests, including the autobiographical implicit association test, as leading to restored diagnostic accuracy, and 4) …

Incidence Of Injury And Illness In Merchant Seafarers, Rafael Yitzhak Lefkowitz
Public Health Theses
This retrospective study estimates cumulative incidences of injury and illness in a seafarer cohort using data from one company providing remote medical services and claims auditing for seafarers. There were 3,526 medical events and 16,626 individual medical services in the merchant seafarers covered by these services between 2008 and 2012. The majority of medical events occurred in men, numbering 3,099 (97.5%); median age was 38.9 years (range: 18-80). The total at-risk seafarer population was estimated by utilizing standard crew size for each class of vessel, and this was used to calculate cumulative incidence for injury and illness. The four-year overall …

Risk Factors And Consequences Of Substance Use Among Youth In Post-Conflict Liberia: A Qualitative Study, Margaret Wheeler Lippitt
Public Health Theses
Background: Substance abuse has a significant impact on the health and well-being of post-conflict populations; however, little is known about substance use in Liberia. Available evidence was generated during the immediate post-conflict period or has not focused on the populations at greatest risk. Because patterns of substance use may have shifted 10 years after the end of the conflict, this study aims to outline the current patterns of substance use and the risk factors for and consequences of substance use among high risk groups in Monrovia, Liberia. Methods: A qualitative design using in-depth, in-person interviews with current and former substance …
Essentialist Reasoning And Knowledge Effects On Biological Reasoning In Young Children, Patricia A. Herrmann, Jason A. French, Ganie B. Dehart, Karl S. Rosengren
Essentialist Reasoning And Knowledge Effects On Biological Reasoning In Young Children, Patricia A. Herrmann, Jason A. French, Ganie B. Dehart, Karl S. Rosengren
Psychology
Biological kinds undergo a variety of changes during their life span, and these changes vary in degree by organism. Understanding that an organism, such as a caterpillar, maintains category identity over its life span despite dramatic changes is a key concept in biological reasoning. At present, we know little about the developmental trajectory of children's understanding of dramatic life-cycle changes and how this might relate to their understanding of evolution. We suggest that this understanding is a key precursor to later understanding of evolutionary change. Two studies examined the impact of age and knowledge on children's biological reasoning about living …

Using Physically-Modeled Synthetic Data To Assess Hyperspectral Unmixing Approaches, Mathew Stites, Jacob Gunther, Todd Moon, Gustavious Williams
Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications
This paper considers an experimental approach for assessing algorithms used to exploit remotely sensed data. The approach employs synthetic images that are generated using physical models to make them more realistic while still providing ground truth data for quantitative evaluation. This approach complements the common approach of using real data and/or simple model-generated data. To demonstrate the value of such an approach, the behavior of the FastICA algorithm as a hyperspectral unmixing technique is evaluated using such data. This exploration leads to a number of useful insights such as: (1) the need to retain more dimensions than indicated by eigenvalue …
Subwavelength Surface Plasmons Based On Novel Structures And Metamaterials, Ruoxi Yang
Subwavelength Surface Plasmons Based On Novel Structures And Metamaterials, Ruoxi Yang
Theses
With the rapid development of nanofabrication technology and powerful computational tools over the last decade, nanophotonics has enjoyed tremendous innovation and found wide applications in ultrahigh-speed data transmission, sensitive optical detection, manipulation of ultra-small objects, and visualization of nanoscale patterns. Surface plasmon-based photonics (or plasmonics) merges electronics and photonics at the nanoscale, creating the ability to combine the superior technical advantages of photonics and electronics on the same chip. Plasmonics focuses on the innovation of photonic devices by exploiting the optical property of metals. In particular, the oscillation of free electrons, when properly driven by electromagnetic waves, would form plasmon-polaritons …

Casualties Of The Drug War, Allan Wachendorfer
Casualties Of The Drug War, Allan Wachendorfer
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
The "War on Drugs" started with the Controlled Substances Act and expanded with the Sentencing Reform Act and Anti-Drug Abuse Acts. Mostly they have provided tertiary measures that have done little to eradicate drugs or drug addiction. Instead, the U.S. remains the number one nation in the world in drug use. In addition, there is an ever growing prison population that has surpassed unsustainable levels. Many of the people behind bars are there for drug related crimes. It is time to examine drug policies, particularly those that send people to prison, and to consider establishing more programs that help people …

Insights Into Readmission Rates Of Atrial Fibrillation Patients Referred To Bridge, Thomas Vasko
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Purpose and Background
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and costs and estimated $6 to $26 billion annually largely due to hospitalizations. Bridging the Discharge Gap Effectively (BRIDGE) is an NP-driven transitional care program for cardiovascular patients. BRIDGE has demonstrated lower rates of readmission for patients with acute coronary syndrome who participated but not for atrial fibrillation (Afib) patients. We sought to assess differences between Afib patients who participated in the BRIDGE program and those who did not.
Conceptual Framework
The BRIDGE program is based on the Bumpus Integrated Client-Focused Transitional Care Model that posits …
Investigation On Solid-Phase Crystallization Techniques For Low Temperature Polysilicon Thin-Film Transistors, Qinglong Li
Investigation On Solid-Phase Crystallization Techniques For Low Temperature Polysilicon Thin-Film Transistors, Qinglong Li
Theses
Low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) has emerged as a dominant technology for high performance thin-film transistors (TFTs) used in mobile liquid crystal display (LCD) and organic light emitting diode (OLED) display products. As users demand higher quality in flat panel displays with a larger viewing area and finer resolution, the improvement in carrier mobility of LTPS compared to that of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) makes it an excellent candidate as a channel material for TFT. Advantages include improvements in switching speed and the ability to incorporate peripheral scan and data driver circuitry onto a low cost display substrate. Solid-phase crystallization (SPC) is …

Clarifications Of A Datum Axis Or Centerplane Specifying In Maximum Material Condition Of Geometric Dimensioning And Tolerancing, Cheng Y. Lin, Jennifer G. Michaeli, Mileta Tomovic
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
Engineering and Engineering Technology students and professionals learning the processes and standards in computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) should learn and understand the methodology of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to describe the intent and requirements for part and assembly geometries. Correct application of GD&T ensures that the part and assembly geometry defined on the drawing will have the desired form and fit (within limits) and function as intended. One learning difficulty in understanding GD&T is the concept of defining a datum axis or center plane using Maximum Material Condition (MMC). To overcome this difficulty, a new approach …
