Genetic Diversity Of Plasmodium Vivax Clinical Isolates From Southern Pakistan Using Pvcsp And Pvmsp1 Genetic Markers, Afsheen Raza, Najia K. Ghanchi, Ali M. Thaver, Sana Jafri, Mohammad A. Beg

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background:
Plasmodium vivax is the prevalent malarial species accounting for 70% of malaria burden in Pakistan; however, there is no baseline data on the circulating genotypes. Studies have shown that polymorphic loci of gene encoding antigens pvcsp and pvmsp1 can be used reliably for conducting molecular epidemiological studies. Therefore, this study aimed to bridge the existing knowledge gap on population structure on P. vivax from Pakistan using these two polymorphic genes.
Methods:
During the period January 2008 to May 2009, a total of 250 blood samples were collected from patients tested slide positive for P. vivax, at the Aga Khan …

Identification Of Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria Isolated From Clinical Specimens At A Tertiary Care Hospital: A Cross-Sectional Study, Imran Ahmed, Kauser Jabeen, Rumina Hasan

Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine

Background:
Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are opportunistic pathogens in immuno-compromised patients. They are also increasingly recognized as pathogens in immuno-competent individuals. Globally, an increase in NTM isolation is being reported with a varied geographic prevalence of different species around the world. There is lack of data on species distribution of these organisms from Pakistan. Treatment options differ according to the species isolated and its susceptibility profile. Knowledge of local species variation would help targeted therapy. This study was performed to determine frequencies of different NTM species isolated from various clinical specimens submitted at a tertiary care hospital laboratory.
Methods:
NTM isolated …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose The function and role of periodontal ligament (PDL) are of interest in a number of fields. Due to the complexity of the geometry and the impossibility of obtaining specimens, the mechanical properties of PDL remain uncertain. The object of this study was to investigate the viscoelastic behavior of PDL by means of nonlinear finite element analysis. Materials and methods In order to consider nonlinear force-displacement behavior, we proposed a finite strain viscoelasticity material model to represent PDL tissue. The strain energy consists of two kinds. The first is nonlinear in time, called viscoelasticity, and the other is geometrically …

The Commerce Clause Implications Of The Individual Mandate Under The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act , L. Darnell Weeden

Journal of Law and Health

The fundamental focus of this Article is whether the decision not to buy individual health insurance as required by Congress also qualifies as valid economic activity under the Commerce Clause. This question before the Court continues the modern battle regarding the scope of Congress’s power under the Commerce Clause, and the battle regarding the regulation of economic activity continues, irrespective of the Supreme Court decision regarding PPACA, because of the continuing impact of the Supreme Court’s holding in United States v. Lopez. Part II of this Article contends that the decision not to purchase health insurance is not to be …

The Dark Side Of The Boom: The Peculiar Dilemma Of Modern False Claims Act Litigation, David S. Torborg Jan 2013

The Dark Side Of The Boom: The Peculiar Dilemma Of Modern False Claims Act Litigation, David S. Torborg

Journal of Law and Health

Spurred by treble damages, substantial penalties, and lucrative relator awards, litigation under federal and state False Claims Act (“FCA”) statutes has exploded in recent years. Much of that explosion stems from aggressive and creative legal theories that challenge controversial industry practices or even well-known loopholes or waste in government policy. Evidence from governmental entities can be critically important in litigating these FCA claims. Unique aspects of False Claims Act actions, however, can aggravate the risk of losing this important evidence, leaving the parties, judges, and juries without the evidentiary record necessary to equitably adjudicate these disputes. Defendants can face the …

In the Indonesia democracy, the multiparty system is used as one of the canal to aggregate the public aspirations. This mechanism is supported by Law No. 25/1999 about fiscal decentralization and a series of related regulations. It is also supported by direct election for regional head (Pilkada). As such, the winning political parties may influence the local government budget allocation which finally transform into the economic growth. This study estimates the influence of party politic concentration on the local economic growth. The data used is the local government election of 2004 and 2009 from 55 regions (cities). The concentration of …

Faktor Politik Dalam Alokasi Dana Antarpemerintah Indonesia, M. Syareza L. Tobing, Bambang P. S. Brodjonegoro

Jurnal Ekonomi dan Pembangunan Indonesia

The intergovernmental transfer system currently applied in Indonesia is intended to prevent the intervention of political powers. However, there are indications of political determinants behind central government transfers to sub-national governments. In order to prove the existence of these political factors, this research utilizes empirical panel data models of Dana Alokasi Umum (DAU), Dana Dekonsentrasi and Tugas Pembantuan using political variables. Results show that while there are no significant political variables in the DAU and Dana Dekonsentrasi models, there is a political determinant behind the amount of Dana Tugas Pembantuan, where a higher seat share for the Golkar …

Sex-Parate But Equal? The Legality Of Single-Sex Public Schools And Their Discriminatory Effect On Transgender Students, Bryana Turner

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that single-sex public schools are both legally problematic and harmful, particularly to transgender students. It contends that such schools violate Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and are unconstitutional under the precedent set by Brown v. Board of Education. The analysis highlights the discriminatory effects of single-sex education, which perpetuates gender stereotypes and fails to accommodate transgender students, who are disproportionately affected by such policies.

Employee Benefits Law: The Hidden Gap Enabling Sexual Orientation Discrimination In Employment, Jason E. Shapiro

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that state anti-discrimination laws are ineffective in protecting individuals from sexual orientation discrimination in employment, particularly in cases involving ERISA-governed employee benefits. It highlights how federal ERISA preemption undermines state laws, creating a legal gap that allows employers to discriminate without consequences. The note advocates for federal legislation to address this issue, as amending ERISA or relying on state laws alone cannot fully protect LGB individuals from discrimination in employment.

Front-Of-Package Nutrition Claims: Trustworthy Facts Or Deceptive Marketing? Closing The Loopholes In Labeling, Kathryn E. Hayes

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that front-of-package (FOP) labeling on children's food products is insufficient and often misleading, failing to meet basic nutritional standards. It advocates for the adoption of uniform, science-based labeling standards developed by an objective body like the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to help parents make healthier choices. The analysis highlights the limitations of self-regulation by manufacturers and the need for stronger governmental oversight to address deceptive practices and improve public health outcomes.

Severe Reactions To A Soy Containing Beverage In Peanut Allergic Individuals Not Avoiding Soy, Benjamin Remington, Julie A. Nordlee, John R. Bacon, Marc E. Dyer, Steve L. Taylor, Joe L. Baumert

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Rationale: Three peanut-allergic individuals experienced severe reactions to a nationally distributed high-protein beverage in the same month. The major protein sources in the beverage were soy-based ingredients and cows’ milk. These individuals did not avoid soy in their diet and previously consumed various soy products without adverse reactions. Peanut contamination of the beverage was not detected by specific ELISA, so attention shifted to the soy ingredients. The research objective was to elucidate differences between the soy milk and soy protein isolate used in the beverage and other forms of soy safely consumed by these individuals.

Methods: Specific IgE levels from …
