Examination Of Hippocampal N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptors Following Chronic Intermittent Ethanol Exposure In Vitro, Anna R. Reynolds Jan 2013

Examination Of Hippocampal N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptors Following Chronic Intermittent Ethanol Exposure In Vitro, Anna R. Reynolds

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Chronic intermittent ethanol exposure (CIE) is associated with degeneration of hippocampal neurons. The present study used hippocampal cultures to examine the loss of NeuN immunoreactivity, a relaible marker or neuronal density, after 1, 2, or 3 cycles of 5 days EtOH exposure (50 mM), followed by a 24-hour period of EWD or continuous EtOH exposure. NeuN immunoreactivity was decreased by 13%, 19%, and 16% in the CA1, CA3, and dentate gyrus after 3 cycles of CIE respectively; thionine staining confirmed significant cellular losses within each hippocampal subregion. Two cycles of CIE in aged tissue cultures resulted in significant decreases in …

Change In Envy As A Function Of Target Likeability, Chelsea M. Cooper Jan 2013

Change In Envy As A Function Of Target Likeability, Chelsea M. Cooper

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Envy is a painful emotion that can negatively impact one’s self-worth. It is also a shameful, socially undesirable emotion, implying both inferiority and hostility. Some scholars suggest that these features of envy lead to a need to cope with the emotion. Thus, over time, envy tends to be transformed into more socially acceptable responses such as resentment or dislike. The present study tested this claim. First, envy was manipulated by asking participants to read an article containing an interview with either a high- or low-envy target. The second article manipulated the likeability of the target by varying whether or not …

Removing Revlon, Franklin A. Gevurtz Jan 2013

Removing Revlon, Franklin A. Gevurtz

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

This Article advocates the abolition of the Revlon doctrine— the junior partner in Delaware’s corporate takeover jurisprudence, which governs certain contests involving auctions and sales of control. Revlon arose in the twilight zone created by the overlap between defenses to hostile tender offers and efforts by directors to avoid or coerce a shareholder vote on corporate mergers and sales (shotgun corporate marriages). The narrow holding of the case stands for the common sense proposition that if directors decide to sell their corporation by choosing between two bids, both of which will pay all of the shareholders cash for all of …

Responding To Ethnic And Religious Conflict In The New Arab Order: The Promise And Limits Of Rights, Omar M. Dajani Jan 2013

Responding To Ethnic And Religious Conflict In The New Arab Order: The Promise And Limits Of Rights, Omar M. Dajani

McGeorge School of Law Scholarly Articles

Intercommunal conflict has marred the political transitions unfolding in a number of states in the Middle East, raising questions about the status and protection of ethnic and religious minorities in the region's evolving political order. In view of the transnationalc haracter and regional scale of the problem, this Article considers the efficacy of one potential regional response-the development of an Arab convention on minority rights. The Article begins by describing three types of "minority problems" that have been sources of conflict in the Middle East: (1) religious minorities and Islamist majoritarianism; (2) nationalist minorities and territorial disputes, and (3) politically …

Medicare Part D Roulette: Potential Implications Of Random Assignment And Plan Restrictions, Rajul A. Patel, Mark P. Walberg, Joseph A. Woelfel, Michelle M. Amaral, Paresh Varu

School of Pharmacy Faculty Articles

Background: Dual-eligible (Medicare/Medicaid) beneficiaries are randomly assigned to a benchmark plan, which provides prescription drug coverage under the Part D benefit without consideration of their prescription drug profile. To date, the potential for beneficiary assignment to a plan with poor formulary coverage has been minimally studied and the resultant financial impact to beneficiaries unknown.

Objective: We sought to determine cost variability and drug use restrictions under each available 2010 California benchmark plan.

Methods: Dual-eligible beneficiaries were provided Part D plan assistance during the 2010 annual election period. The Medicare Web site was used to determine benchmark plan costs and prescription …

Interrupting Life History: Evolution Of A Relationship Within The Research Process, Ronald E. Hallett Jan 2013

Interrupting Life History: Evolution Of A Relationship Within The Research Process, Ronald E. Hallett

Benerd College Faculty Articles

In this paper the author explores how relationships are defined within the context of constructing a life history. The life history of Benjamin, a homeless young man transitioning to adulthood, is used to illustrate how difficult it is to define the parameters of the research environment. During an “ethically important moment” in the research process, the author had to critically analyze his obligation to his participant based upon the relational titles exchanged. As chaos in Benjamin’s life increased, a choice needed to be made about the researcher’s involvement in his life. Should the researcher provide support or simply document events? …

W.02 The Political Turn: Writing Democracy For The 21st Century, Brian Hendrickson

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

The morning of the CCCC preconvention workshops feels a lot like the beginning of a marathon. The atmosphere is full of both excitement and apprehension as attendees slowly fill the seats around each table—a few seasoned veterans casual in their conversation and demeanor, as if the morning were just like any other, whereas others appear to be only half present, staring far off into space as if trying to focus on imagining what it will feel like to finally cross the finish line and not what it will take to get there. I arrived at this year’s “The Political Turn: …

Effect Of Sample History On Dissolution Rates Of Gypsum {010} Surfaces, Dennis Stefan Renier Lennaerts Jan 2013

Effect Of Sample History On Dissolution Rates Of Gypsum {010} Surfaces, Dennis Stefan Renier Lennaerts

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Mineral dissolution plays a significant role in geochemical processes such as carbon sequestration and isotope geochemistry. While factors such as temperature, pressure, and solution chemistry have been widely studied, the effects of sample history and surface morphology on dissolution rates have been studied to a lesser extent. This research focuses on the dissolution of cleaved, polished, and reacted samples of the atomically flat natural {010} cleavage plane of gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O) to further investigate upon the effect of sample history. Gypsum was chosen as the mineral of interest because of its planar crystal surface and relatively fast dissolution rate. Chemical dissolution …

Insulin Treatment Attenuates Renal Adam17 And Ace2 Shedding In Akita Diabetic Mice, Esam Said Busah Salem Jan 2013

Insulin Treatment Attenuates Renal Adam17 And Ace2 Shedding In Akita Diabetic Mice, Esam Said Busah Salem

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Diabetic patients have a 40%-50% lifetime chance of developing chronic kidney disease, which remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. Alterations within renin angiotensin system balance contribute to the pathogenesis of diabetic kidney disease. Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) has an endogenous renoprotective role due to its ability to form angiotensin (1-7) (Ang 1-7) by degrading angiotensin II (Ang II). We have shown previously that hyperglycemia increases urinary ACE2 and albumin excretion in db/db diabetic mice. The protease, disintegrin and metalloprotease (ADAM) 17, is involved in the shedding of several transmembrane proteins, including ACE2 in vitro. Tissue …

Physical Exercise Training But Not Metformin Attenuates Albuminuria And Shedding Of Ace2 In Type 2 Diabetic Db/Db Mice, Hari Krishna Somineni Jan 2013

Physical Exercise Training But Not Metformin Attenuates Albuminuria And Shedding Of Ace2 In Type 2 Diabetic Db/Db Mice, Hari Krishna Somineni

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Angiotensin II (Ang II), a potent vasoconstrictor cleaved from Ang I, is responsible for renal damage in diabetes. Angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is highly expressed in the kidney and has been shown to be renoprotective by degrading Ang II to Ang-(1-7). A Disintegrin and Metalloproteinases (ADAMs) were recently identified as an ectodomain sheddases of transmembrane proteins. ADAM17 mediated shedding of renal ACE2 could contribute to the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. In our previous study, rosiglitazone treatment normalized hyperglycemia and improved renal injury by preventing ACE2 shedding. The aim of this study is to test the hypothesis that improved glucose …

Regulation Of The Stability And Cellular Localization Of The Coxsackievirus And Adenovirus Receptor (Car), Ran Yan Jan 2013

Regulation Of The Stability And Cellular Localization Of The Coxsackievirus And Adenovirus Receptor (Car), Ran Yan

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In polarized epithelia, the seven exon isoform of the Coxsackievirus and adenovirus receptor (CAREx7) is a basolateral cell-cell adhesion protein that is inaccessible for viral infection. In contrast, the eight-exon CAR isoform (CAREx8) localizes at the apical surface and mediates adenovirus (AdV) infection. A PDZ-domain containing protein, MAGI-1, interacts with both isoforms of CAR. I hypothesized that each CAR isoform interacts with specific MAGI-1 PDZ domain(s). Co-immunoprecipitation, FRET and binding assays showed that CAREx7 and CAREx8 both interact with MAGI-1-PDZ3 with high affinity. CAREx8 also interacts with MAGI-1-PDZ1. Whereas the CAREx7-PDZ3 …

Bioaccumulation And Neuroinflammation Of Gold Nanoparticles In The Central Nervous System, Fahimeh Fallahi Jan 2013

Bioaccumulation And Neuroinflammation Of Gold Nanoparticles In The Central Nervous System, Fahimeh Fallahi

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) possess unique physicochemical properties that may facilitate entry into the central nervous system (CNS) where they may act therapeutically. There is little information on biodistribution or inflammatory effects of GNPs in specific brain regions. Brain Localization and neuroinflammatory response to citrate-capped spherical GNP (10 nm) was determined 24 hours after intravenous (IV) injection in male C57Bl mice. A known inflammogen, lipopolysaccharide (LPS, 2 mg kg-1, SC), was tested as a positive control supplement. Aggregation of GNPs was measured using various Phosphate-Buffered Saline (PBS) concentrations (10, 1, 0.1, 0.01 X) to determine the optimal buffer concentration to maintain …

Elucidating A Role Of Btf And Trap150 In Pre-Mrna Processing And Cell Cycle Progression, Sapna N. Varia Jan 2013

Elucidating A Role Of Btf And Trap150 In Pre-Mrna Processing And Cell Cycle Progression, Sapna N. Varia

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Transcription of protein-coding genes is coordinated with pre-mRNA processing as well as mRNP assembly and nuclear export in mammalian cells. In this dissertation, I examined the functions of two homologous non-classical serine-arginine-rich (SR) proteins, Btf (BCLAF1) and TRAP150 in these steps of gene regulation. Since Btf and TRAP150 share 39% sequence identity and 66% sequence similarity, I also examined whether Btf and TRAP150 have overlapping or distinct functions in pre-mRNA processing. Using two different reporter loci, I showed in-situ recruitment of Btf and TRAP150 at reporter transcription sites, and I identified both Btf and TRAP150 being associated with a core …

The placenta is a transient organ that develops upon initiation of pregnancy and is essential for fetal development and survival. The rodent placenta consists of three layers with predominantly analogous cell types in the human placenta. The labyrinth layer, which lies closest to the fetus, facilitates nutrient and waste exchange between mother and baby. Abnormalities of the placenta may occur as a result of cellular stress and have been associated with the pregnancy-associated disorders, intrauterine growth restriction and placental insufficiency. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a master sensor of cellular stress and changes in AMPK expression or activation could be …

C-Bouton Coverage Of Alpha-Motoneurons Following Peripheral Nerve Injury, Esra Salah Shermadou Jan 2013

C-Bouton Coverage Of Alpha-Motoneurons Following Peripheral Nerve Injury, Esra Salah Shermadou

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Peripheral nerve injuries (PNI) cause alternations in central synapses leading to loss of function. The C-bouton synapses onto a-motoneurons in the ventral horn, and has a role in regulating motor output. Following tibial nerve ligation, the somatic C-bouton coverage is depleted (Alvarez et al., 2011), however, it is unknown what happens following crush type injuries. PNI causes neuroglia activation and proliferation that contribute to synaptic alterations, a response that has not been well-characterized in the ventral horn, where motoneurons are located. Therefore, I hypothesize that glia activation following peripheral nerve injury correlates to the degree of depletion of synaptic coverage …

Differential Regulation Of The Hippocampal Taurine Transporter Protein In Rat Brain: Mechanisms Contributing To Neuronal Volume Regulation, Amanda Noelle Freeman Jan 2013

Differential Regulation Of The Hippocampal Taurine Transporter Protein In Rat Brain: Mechanisms Contributing To Neuronal Volume Regulation, Amanda Noelle Freeman

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Background. In osmotic edema, net efflux of taurine from neurons and accumulation by astrocytes contributes to neuronal volume regulation and astrocytic swelling. Taurine is accumulated in both cell types by a sodium- and chloride-dependent 72-75 kDa protein transporter, TauT. TauT functional activity decreases in osmotically swollen neurons but is unaltered in swollen astrocytes, in vitro. This swelling-induced downregulation of neuronal TauT activity is blocked with the tyrosine kinase (TK) inhibitor, genistein. In contrast, PKC activation has no effect on neuronal TauT, but inhibits astrocytic TauT. Thus, we hypothesize that during osmotic swelling, neuronal TauT activity is regulated by a TK …
