Sickle Cell Disease Erythrocyte Stiffness And Cytoadhesion Investigated Via Atomic Force Microscopy, Jamie L. Maciaszek

The biomechanical properties of red blood cells (RBCs), including increased stiffness and abnormal cytoadherence, are integral components in the cascade of events resulting to vasoocclusive episodes (VOEs) in sickle cell disease (SCD). VOEs are the main cause of morbidity in SCD and sickle cell trait (SCT). Using experimental techniques based on atomic force microscopy (AFM), we studied the stiffness and adhesion of RBCs from SCD patients and from subjects with SCT. We found that SCD and SCT RBCs are three-fold stiffer than normal RBCs. Further, a ten-fold increase in the stiffness of sickled RBCs was measured upon deoxygenation. In an …

With the rates of female incarcerations on the rise, it is important that we examine programs available to female offenders in prison, and programs available to female offenders as they exit prison and re-enter society. Programs developed specifically for these females to fit their needs are important in their rehabilitation progress and should help in keeping their recidivism rates low. I expect to find a disconnect between the needs of female offenders and the programs meant to serve and rehabilitate them. Measuring Changes In Tactile Sensitivity In The Hind Paw Of Mice Using An Electronic Von Frey Apparatus, Tijana Martinov, Madison Mack, Akilah Sykes, Devavani Chatterjea

Measuring inflammation-induced changes in thresholds of hind paw withdrawal from mechanical pressure is a useful technique to assess changes in pain perception in rodents. Withdrawal thresholds can be measured first at baseline and then following drug, venom, injury, allergen, or otherwise evoked inflammation by applying an accurate force on very specific areas of the skin. An electronic von Frey apparatus allows precise assessment of mouse hind paw withdrawal thresholds that are not limited by the available filament sizes in contrast to classical von Frey measurements. [1] We created six new tree-ring chronologies in northern Utah, which were used with preexisting chronologies from Utah and western Wyoming to reconstruct mean annual flow for the Logan River, the largest tributary of the regionally important Bear River. Two reconstruction models were developed, a “Local” model that incorporated two Rocky Mountain juniper chronologies located within the basin, and a “Regional” model that also included limber pine and pinyon pine chronologies from a larger area. The Local model explained 48.2% of the variability in the instrumental record and the juniper chronologies better captured streamflow variability than Douglas-fir collected within the …

This ninety minute session seeks to provide a systematic framework for medical students relatively new to the differential diagnosis process. Via a combined lecture/case-based approach, the session presents basic clinical reasoning concepts and specific heuristics to guide the differential process followed by an opportunity to apply the tools to simulated pediatric cases. It also introduces the concept of cognitive biases and presents strategies to mitigate their effects. The session has been successfully used with third year medical students during the first week of their pediatrics clerkship. Over the last decade, nursing educators have worked to embed evidence-based practice in curricula. Yet gaps exist in the preparation of the workforce educated prior to the infusion of evidence-based practice in nursing education. Three Joanna Briggs Institute Collaborating centers have developed and implemented clinical fellowships to address the professional development needs of clinicians. The fellowships build fundamental evidence-based practice skills that include defining problems, asking questions, searching and appraising evidence, implementing the evidence, and evaluating and sustaining outcomes. Methods: IRB-approved online survey using six intraprofessional list serves. Characteristics of the care environment, provider, and perceived barriers to anthropometric measurements were obtained. Chi-square was used for analysis.

Results: Of 258 respondents, 139 (54%) were nurses, 46% were OP's. Half (49%) worked in medical-surgical (non-cardiac) critical care environment. Most (72%) used parental estimates of anthropometry measurements, only 3% affirmed obtaining them on admission. Both groups perceived barriers to obtaining Wt as extracorporeal life support (ECLS) (80%), hemodynamic instability (76%), and critical airway (69%); for S: hemodynamic instability (50%), medical devices (48%), and ECLS …

A complex trait is one that exhibits continuous phenotypic variation due to genetic variation in many quantitative trait genes: QTGs). The ultimate goal of genetics is to relate genotype to phenotype; in the case of complex traits this requires a better understanding of what types of genes harbor causal natural variation, and what form the variation takes. Here I describe two experiments using the model complex trait of sporulation efficiency in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, one to specifically investigate how small effects contribute to a quantitative trait and the other to determine whether certain types of genes are more likely …

This thesis reports on an evaluative study of the first 300-level Spanish class at Brigham Young University. The information gathered describes the history of the class and changes in curriculum and goals over the years. It also describes students who have taken the class: native Spanish speakers, heritage speakers, returned missionaries, students from lower-levels, students with a background in another Romance language, and presents information as to how well the class has met the needs of each group of students, as well as suggestions to better meet student needs. Results indicate that there is a general satisfaction with the first …
