Enhanced Optical Bistability With Film-Coupled Plasmonic Nanocubes, Christos Argyropoulos, Cristian Ciraci, David R. Smith
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Colloidally synthesized nanocubes strongly coupled to conducting films hold great promise for enhancing different nonlinear optical processes. They exhibit a robust and sensitive scattering response that can be easily controlled by their geometrical and material parameters. Strong local field enhancement is generated at the gap regions between the nanocubes and the metallic film. We show that strong optical bistability and all-optical switching behavior can be obtained by loading these nanogaps with Kerr nonlinear materials. Relatively low input intensities are required to obtain these nonlinear effects. The proposed design can lead to efficient, low-power, and ultrafast all-optical memories and scattering nanoswitches.

Balancing Inner And Outer Technologies: Mobile Devices And Contemplative Practice, Nicky Duenkel
Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice
This article briefly considers elements of an exploratory study undertaken in a small first year university class in Community Studies in which both mobile devices and contemplative practices were intentionally integrated. Incorporating these two pedagogical elements provided valuable insights, each in their own right, and together they created scaffolding for a Contemplative Inquiry Assignment in which students were encouraged to mindfully observe their patterns of engaging with social networking and mobile devices. This experiential learning helped students raise awareness and make conscious aspects of their social network patterning in ways that no reading or lecture could.

Cocaine and other drugs of abuse increase HIV-induced immunopathogenesis; and neurobiological mechanisms of cocaine addiction implicate a key role for microRNAs (miRNAs), single-stranded non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression and defend against viruses. In fact, HIV defends against miRNAs by actively suppressing the expression of polycistronic miRNA cluster miRNA-17/92, which encodes miRNAs including miR-20a. IFN-g production by natural killer cells is regulated by miR-155 and this miRNA is also critical to dendritic cell (DC) maturation. However, the impact of cocaine on miR-155 expression and subsequent HIV replication is unknown. We examined the impact of cocaine on two miRNAs, miR-20a and …

Resource managers at parks and other protected areas are increasingly expected to factor climate change explicitly into their decision making frameworks. However, most protected areas are small relative to the geographic ranges of species being managed, so forecasts need to consider local adaptation and community dynamics that are correlated with climate and affect distributions inside protected area boundaries. Additionally, niche theory suggests that species' physiological capacities to respond to climate change may be underestimated when forecasts fail to consider the full breadth of climates occupied by the species rangewide. Here, using correlative species distribution models that contrast estimates of climatic …

BACKGROUND: Obesity affects a third of adults in the US and results in an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. While the mechanisms underlying this increased risk are not well understood, animal models of obesity have shown direct effects on the heart such as steatosis and fibrosis, which may affect cardiac function. However, the effect of obesity on cardiac function in animal models is not well-defined. We hypothesized that diet-induced obesity in mice reduces strain, torsion, and synchrony in the left ventricle (LV).
METHODS: Ten 12-week-old C57BL/6 J mice were randomized to a high-fat or low-fat diet. After 5 months on …

Effect Of Arm Spasticity Grade On Blood Pressure Measurement, Chia-Min Lin, Huei-Yu Lo, Wai-Keung Lee, Meng-Tai Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Objective: The arm spasticity in patients with stroke has been proved to affect blood pressure measurement. However, earlier studies showed inconsistent results of how the spasticity affected the measurement of blood pressure. In some cases, measurement of blood pressure in patients' involved arm is necessary, so the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of spasticity grade on blood pressure measurement in patients with stroke. Methods: We recruited 50 patients with hemiplegia or hemiparesis after stroke. The grade of arm spasticity was assessed using the modified Ashworth scale (MAS), while the bilateral brachial artery pressure was measured using an …

The Relationship Between Heart Rate Turning Point And Anaerobic Threshold In Patients With Cardiopulmonary Diseases, Yi-Tien Su, Su-Ying Hung, Chen-Liang Chou
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Background: Exercise training is an efficient way to improve physical performance. Training at an intensity of a certain level of the anaerobic threshold (AT) is a successful and frequently adopted method to increase both maximal and submaximal exercise capacity. Several methods are currently used to detect the AT. Analysis of the respiratory gas exchange allows identification of the AT and is currently advocated as the "gold standard". The heart rate turning point (HRTP) is a downward or upward change from the linear HR work relationship evidenced during incremental exercise testing and has been reported to coincide with AT. Purpose: The …

Narrative Financial Therapy: Integrating A Financial Planning Approach With Therapeutic Theory, Megan A. Mccoy, D. Bruce Ross, Joseph W. Goetz
Journal of Financial Therapy
The article serves as one of the first attempts to develop an integrated theoretical approach to financial therapy that can be used by practitioners from multiple disciplines. The presented approach integrates the components of the six-step financial planning process with components of empirically-supported therapeutic methods. This integration provides the foundation for a manualized approach to financial therapy, shaped by the writings of narrative theorists and select cognitive-behavioral interventions that can be used both by mental health and financial professionals.

A Theoretical Analysis Of Iso9000 Suppliers, Chiaho Chang
Department of Accounting and Finance Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
This paper looks at the economic behavior of suppliers under different ISO9000 standards, especially that of ISO9001 and ISO9002. Considering the information asymmetry, given the same quality provided, the cost-reducing efforts of the ISO9001 SUPPLIER and ISO9002 SUPPLIER under a fixed, cost-plus contract are investigated. The result shows that the cost-reducing effort of the ISO9002 SUPPLIER is in line with the main manufacturer's expectations while the ISO9001 SUPPLIER is able to keep some of the information rent and exerts less effort. The bargaining power of the ISO9001 SUPPLIER is also stronger relative to that of the ISO9002 SUPPLIER. It is …

The pore-forming toxin lysenin self-inserts to form conductance channels in natural and artificial lipid membranes containing sphingomyelin. The inserted channels exhibit voltage regulation and hysteresis of the macroscopic current during the application of positive periodic voltage stimuli. We explored the bi-stable behavior of lysenin channels and present a theoretical approach for the mechanism of the hysteresis to explain its static and dynamic components. This investigation develops a model to incorporate the role of charge accumulation on the bilayer lipid membrane in influencing the channel conduction state. Our model is supported by experimental results and also provides insight into the temperature …

The Role Of Ict In Scaling Up The Impact Of Social Enterprises, Ramon Fisac-Garcia, Manuel Acevedo-Ruiz, Ana Moreno-Romero, Thane Kreiner
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) can help social enterprises and other organizations working on global sustainability issues and in the human development sector in general scale their social impact. The flexibility, dynamism, and ubiquity of ICTs make them powerful tools for improving relationships among organizations and their beneficiaries, multiplying the effects of action against many, if not all, aspects of global unsustainability, including poverty and exclusion. The scaling of social impact occurs in two different dimensions. On one hand, ICTs can increase the value proposition of a program or action (depth scaling) in different ways: providing accurate and fast needs …

Social Venture Business Model Archetypes: Five Vehicles For Creating Economic And Social Value, Jennifer I. Woolley, Albert V. Bruno, Eric D. Carlson
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
Social ventures balance the economic and social dimensions of value creation to alleviate the problems created by shared collective issues. While much is known about economic value creation in conventional firms, little empirical work has focused on social ventures. As the number of social entrepreneurs continues to increase, the challenge of creating both economic and social value has emerged as an important research topic. In this article, we examine 124 social ventures from around the world to gain insight into ways social ventures pursue economic and social value creation. Five social venture business model archetypes emerge from the data. We …

We report the successful synthesis of single crystals of the layered iridate (Na1−xLix)2IrO3, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.9, and a thorough study of its structural, magnetic, thermal, and transport properties. This compound allows a controlled interpolation between Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3, while maintaining the quantum magnetism of the honeycomb Ir4+ planes. The measured phase diagram demonstrates a suppression of the Néel temperature TN at an intermediate x, indicating that the magnetic orders in Na2IrO3 and Li2IrO3 …

Peg3 (paternally expressed gene 3) is an imprinted gene encoding a DNA-binding protein. This gene plays important roles in controlling fetal growth rates and nurturing behaviors. In the current study, a new mutant mouse model has been generated to further characterize the functions of this DNA-binding protein. Besides known phenotypes, this new mutant model also revealed potential roles of Peg3 in mammalian reproduction. Female heterozygotes produce a much smaller number of mature oocytes than the wild-type littermates, resulting in reduced litter sizes. According to genome-wide expression analyses, several placenta-specific gene families are de-repressed in the brain of Peg3 heterozygous embryos, …

Single genetic variants discovered so far have been only weakly associated with melanoma. This study aims to use multiple single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) jointly to obtain a larger genetic effect and to improve the predictive value of a conventional phenotypic model. We analyzed 11 SNPs that were associated with melanoma risk in previous studies and were genotyped in MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) and Harvard Medical School investigations. Participants with ≥15 risk alleles were 5-fold more likely to have melanoma compared to those carrying ≤6. Compared to a model using the most significant single variant rs12913832, the increase in predictive …

During heel strike, a prosthetic foot must perform ground-reaction force shock absorption, and thereafter, must provide control of the smooth-rhythm plantar flexion movement. During the midstance phase, the foot must provide the controlled advancement of the tibia. During the terminal stance, the anterior part of the foot must act as a hard rocker to provide progression and roll over the toe and to allow center of gravity switching to the opposite site as the tibia advances. The biomechanics of the four-bar linkage knee simulates the motion of the actual human knee joint. It can be discussed by analyzed by five …
