The Consequences Of Disbelief In Free Will: Diminished Morality Or Enhanced Conformity?, Bradley M. Trager
The Consequences Of Disbelief In Free Will: Diminished Morality Or Enhanced Conformity?, Bradley M. Trager
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Diminished belief in free will has been shown to influence morally relevant behavior (e.g., cheating, helping) and conformity. What happens when opportunities for immoral action and conformity are both available? To investigate the relative salience of these action tendencies, we manipulated participants’ belief in free will, provided them an opportunity to cheat on a perceptual-reasoning task to obtain a reward, and exposed them to a confederate who did or did not cheat on this task. Participants primed with deterministic (vs. free will) beliefs demonstrated diminished belief in free will, and an increased tendency to cheat regardless of whether the confederate …
Evoking Meaning, Lenny C Salas Moreno
Evoking Meaning, Lenny C Salas Moreno
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The intent of this thesis is to focus on evocative objects to explore what is lost in the transition from tangible to digital and how personal meaning is altered by digitalization. "We are witnessing the sudden dematerialization of our arts and entertainment, their transfer from unique artifacts to universal on-demand screen availability."1 As we replace objects like photographs, books and music CDs with intangible digital versions, social and physical experiences get reconfigured. With more time being spent on-line, there is a growing emphasis on exchanging digital content and the network of self-projections shared virtually. As we continue towards an increasing …
Examining The Relationship Between Urban Green Space And Sustainable Cities, Gillian. Bloise
Examining The Relationship Between Urban Green Space And Sustainable Cities, Gillian. Bloise
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Urban green space plays a vital role in the stability of the environment. Green spaces are increasingly becoming an integral part of the efforts to promote sustainability because of the different areas of benefits they provide. Sustainable city ranking systems were used to identify the most sustainable urban extents within the US. Landsat TM 4-5 imagery and textural classification are used as techniques in identifying, classifying and analyzing urban green spaces within nineteen urban extents. Patch analyst was used to analyze the location, structure and fragmentation green spaces within each urban extent. The aim is to determine to what degree …
Examination Of The Role And Career Paths Of Chief Research Administrators In Selected Major Research Universities In The United States, Julie. Nash
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The Chief Research Administrator (CRA), also known as the Vice President, Vice Provost, or Vice Chancellor for Research, plays a key role in the research university. It is a position of power and not only affects the mission of the institution, but also controls a very large and vital percentage of external funding. The lack of information on how to prepare for the position makes it difficult to plan a career path for those who aspire to the position. This study was designed to obtain information to define the persona and career path(s) of the CRA at research universities in …
Foreclosure Effects, Cindy M. Shaw
Foreclosure Effects, Cindy M. Shaw
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The recent financial crisis which has beset the United States has made itself felt in a number of ways, not the least of which has been its adverse effect on the housing market. As foreclosure percentages accelerated, increasing numbers of properties across the country became empty and abandoned, leaving a visible imprint of deterioration in neighborhoods that were significantly affected. Initial GIS analysis of both foreclosed and non-foreclosed residential land in Broward County Florida was conducted, showing that there is a discernible spectral difference in the lawn space of these two types of properties, with foreclosed properties exhibiting more brownness, …

Friend Influence On Achievement During Middle Childhood, Dawn Delay
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study was designed to investigate friend influence on academic achievement and task avoidance during middle childhood in a sample of 794 participants in 397 stable same-sex friendship dyads (205 girl dyads and 192 boy dyads) from four municipalities in Finland: two in Central Finland, one in Western Finland, and one in Eastern Finland. Longitudinal data were collected during the spring of 3rd grade and 4th grade and reports were available from both members of each friendship dyad. The Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM; Kenny, Kashy & Cook, 2006) was used with a single sample of participants to estimate friend influence …
Hegemonic "Realness"?, Sarah Tucker Jenkins
Hegemonic "Realness"?, Sarah Tucker Jenkins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
RuPaul's Drag Race is one of the few realilty television shows focusing on QLGBT (queer, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) identified individuals that has made it into mainstream consciousness. Drag Race provides a unique perspective on the ways that gender identity, sexuality, size, class, race, and ethnicity intersect and interact in people's lives. The television show augments many of these intersedtions and the challenges related to these identities while still reflecting the daily struggles that people experience. The show works to promote messages of self-love and acceptance ; however, it also promotes many problematic and damaging stereotypes. This thesis conducts a feminist …
From The Horse's Mouth, Jennifer K. Cox
From The Horse's Mouth, Jennifer K. Cox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis challenges dualistic human and animal ontologies by interpreting science fiction (sf) literature, and argues that whereas words can equivocate and obscure meaning, bodies do not lie. Linguistics and semiology extend the definition of "language" to include human and nonhuman gestures and movement, and posthumanist theory expands definitions of "human" and "animal" to explore species boundaries. Scrutinizing opposing dualisms ultimately questions Western epistemology and authority, allowing for an exploration of embodied animal communications within the larger discourse on species and speciesism. This perspective results in a more comprehensive understanding of the interdependence of all species: human, animal, and "other." …
Changes In Components Of Children’S Self-Reported Gender Identity Over Time, Emily Jackson
Changes In Components Of Children’S Self-Reported Gender Identity Over Time, Emily Jackson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In past gender identity research, little attention has been paid to the determinants of the various dimensions of gender identity (felt pressure for gender differentiation, gender contentedness, and within-gender typicality). This study examined whether children’s self-perceptions and social behaviors influence changes in gender identity over time. One hundred and ninety-five fourth- through seventh-graders completed self-report and peer-report questionnaires during the fall and spring of a school year. This study found that both felt pressure for gender differentiation and within-gender typicality are fluid, rather than stable, constructs during childhood. It also found that sex plays a significant role in not only …
False Recognition Driven By Meaning And Form, Marisol. Parra
False Recognition Driven By Meaning And Form, Marisol. Parra
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Activation of the representations of the two languages in bilingual memory has been shown to affect recognition during initial word comprehension (e.g., Dijkstra & Van Heuven, 2002). This study investigated whether the activation of semantic (i.e., meaning) and lexical (i.e., form) representations of words in a bilingual's two languages affects word recognition after the first stages of word comprehension. False recognition of words in one language that were similar in meaning and/or form to words studied in the other language was an indication of these effects. This study further investigated whether false recognition based on meaning and/or form is modulated …
Ferdinand’S Self-Hood: Lycanthropy And Agency In The Duchess Of Malfi, Connor Boyle
Ferdinand’S Self-Hood: Lycanthropy And Agency In The Duchess Of Malfi, Connor Boyle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
John Webster’s play The Duchess of Malfi subverts early modern hierarchical structures of matter and life by characterizing the human body as fundamentally deceptive and inferior to the animal body. Through close readings of Bosola’s meditations and Ferdinand’s lycanthropy, I consider how Webster constructs animals as simplistic creatures that enjoy a desirable existence, where body and soul are continuous. Within Webster’s play, the dualist conflict between human body and human soul is a primary subject of discourse. Various human characters see animal existence as preferential, as they view animals as automated creatures that do not suffer the self-consciousness that humans …
Eye Fixations During Encoding Of Familiar And Unfamiliar Language, Lauren Wood Mavica
Eye Fixations During Encoding Of Familiar And Unfamiliar Language, Lauren Wood Mavica
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study examines gaze patterns of monolinguals and bilinguals encoding speech in familiar and unfamiliar languages. In condition 1 English monolinguals viewed videos in familiar and unfamiliar languages (English and Spanish or Icelandic). They performed a task to ensure encoding: on each trial, two videos of short sentences were presented, followed by an audio-only recording of one of those sentences. Participants choose whether the audio-clip matched the first or second video. Participants gazed significantly longer at speaker's mouths when viewing unfamiliar languages. In condition 2 Spanish-English bilingual's viewed English and Spanish, no difference was found between the languages. In condition …
Exploratory Analysis Of The Dimensionality Of The Mechanisms That Drive Private Giving Among Alumni Association Members And Non-Member Donors, Paul. Metcalf
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study operationalized Bekkers and Wiepking's (2007, 2011) eight theoretical mechanisms that drive private giving, examining them within the context of alumni donor behavior at a selected public university in the southern region of the United States. The purpose of the study was to determine if the theoretical mechanisms that drive private giving represent distinct psychometric dimensions, and whether they are correlated with one another or essentially independent. A survey with 24 original items was created for this study, and completed by 178 alumni association member donors and non-member donors from the selected university. The study found support for six …
Exploiting Audiovisual Attention For Visual Coding, Freddy. Torres
Exploiting Audiovisual Attention For Visual Coding, Freddy. Torres
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Perceptual video coding has been a promising area during the last years. Increases in compression ratios have been reported by applying foveated video coding techniques where the region of interest (ROI) is selected by using a computational attention model. However, most of the approaches for perceptual video coding only use visual features ignoring the auditory component. In recent physiological studies, it has been demonstrated that auditory stimuli affects our visual perception. In this work, we validate some of those physiological tests using complex video sequence. We designed and developed a web-based tool for video quality measurement. After conducting different experiments, …
Emotion And The Designed Object, Brittany Diane Schade
Emotion And The Designed Object, Brittany Diane Schade
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis explores the expression of emotion through designed objects. Objects act as vehicles of memory in the same way language is the visible form of thought. In graphic design, the sensory qualities of an object provide a material surface on which information is communicated. The goal is to expose the autonomy of materials and form available to designers in the physical world while expressing emotional meaning beyond original form. By recasting the temporary fragments and observations of life into designed objects imbued with personal and cultural importance, the audience gains insight into others' personal and emotional experiences. Through our …
Emotional And Physiological Regulation During Parent-Child Interaction In Preschoolers, Kathryn L. Marsh
Emotional And Physiological Regulation During Parent-Child Interaction In Preschoolers, Kathryn L. Marsh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of the current study is to examine physiological and behavioral components of emotional regulation and the development of empathy in preschoolers. It also examines how the parents play a role in their child's development of emotional competence. Behavioral and physiological responses were assessed for the children during stories chosen for emotional content (one happy and one sad story for each parent). Maternal and paternal ratings of self-expressivity were collected using the Self- Expressiveness in Family Questionnaire (Halberstadt et al., 1995). Greater vagal suppression occurred during the sad conditions suggesting that negative emotions require more processing strategies. Greater attentional …

Empirical Study Of Children's Enjoyment And Perceived Competence In Physical Education And Its Effects On Their Physical Activity Participation Outside Of School, Keith. Brazendale
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between children's enjoyment and perceived competence in physical education (PE) and the effects these factors may have on physical activity participation outside of school. Fifth through eighth grade (n = 100) school children completed questionnaires pertaining to their enjoyment in PE, perceived competence in PE, and physical activity participation outside of school. Results indicated a positive significant relationship between enjoyment in PE, and perceived competence in PE (p<0.01). Children with higher perceptions of competence in school PE, reported greater physical activity participation outside of the school environment (p<0.002). Enjoyment in PE had no statistical significance in determining physical activity participation outside of school (p>0.05). Understanding the factors which influence physical activity participation can help inform future policies and strategies aimed at providing developmentally appropriate experiences, …0.01).>

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study investigates affect coding within the therapeutic relationship, by exploring the client's and therapist's perception of the relationship and the facial and vocal affect expressed by both parties. A sample of 14 therapy sessions each having 1800 data points was collected. The Working Alliance Inventory Short Form (WAI-S) and Real Relationship Inventory (RRI) were completed after each recorded session. The participants were therapists and clients at a university counseling center in South Florida. Data were analyzed using one-tailed t tests, descriptive statistics, scores from RRI and the WAI-S and percentages of negative, neutral and positive affect. Statistically significant relationships …
Amtal Rule, Adella. Irizarry
Amtal Rule, Adella. Irizarry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In this project, I focus on the function of the "amtal" or test of definition or destruction, in Frank Herbert's Dune. It is my argument that these tests "to destruction" determine not only the limits or defects of the person being tested, but also - and more crucially - the very limits and defects of the definition of humanity in three specific cultural spheres within the novel: the Bene Gesserit, the Fremen, and the Faufreluches. The definitions of "amtal" as well as "humanity," like all definitions, are somewhat fluid, changing depending on usage, cultural context, and the political and social …
An Empirical Analysis Of The Roles Assumed By Public Administrators, Alexandru V. Roman
An Empirical Analysis Of The Roles Assumed By Public Administrators, Alexandru V. Roman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation examines administrative roles within the context of everyday public administration. Specifically, it studies the relationship between administrative roles assumed by public administrators and (1) the perceived presence of administrative discretion, (2) individual level beliefs regarding involvement in policy formulation and (3) tenure with organization. This dissertation has a three-fold purpose. First, it delineates the types of roles assumed by public procurement specialists. Second, it tests whether administrative discretion, beliefs regarding participation in policy formulation and organizational tenure are significant in explaining the assumption of certain types of roles. Finally, the dissertation evaluates the implications for the public procurement …
Building A Character, Peterson Elizabeth Marie Cruz
Building A Character, Peterson Elizabeth Marie Cruz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation focuses on the elements of performance that contribute to the actress's development of somatic practices. By mastering the art of articulation and vocalization, by transforming their bodies and their environment, these actors created their own agency. The female actors lived the life of the characters they portrayed, which were full of multicultural models from various social and economic classes. Somaesthetics, as a focus of sensory-aesthetic appreciation and somatic awareness, provides a pragmatic approach to understanding the unique way in which the woman of the early modern Spanish stage, while dedicating herself to the art of acting, challenged the …

Communicating Resilience: A Discursive Leadership Perspective, David H. Torres, Jeremy P. Fyke
Communicating Resilience: A Discursive Leadership Perspective, David H. Torres, Jeremy P. Fyke
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
In this essay we challenge whether current conceptions of optimism, hope, and resilience are complete enough to account for the complexity and nuance of developing and maintaining these in practice. For example, a quick perusal of popular outlets (e.g., Forbes, Harvard Business Review) reveals advice to managers urging them to “be optimistic,” or “be happy” so that these types of emotions or feelings can spread to the workplace. One even finds simple advice and steps to follow on how to foster these types of things in the workplace (McKee; Tjan). We argue that this common perspective focuses narrowly …

“The Other Hangover”: Implementing And Evaluating An Original, Student-Designed Campaign To Curb Binge Drinking, Nathan Gilkerson, Michelle Gross, Andrea M. Ahneman
College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications
Binge drinking is a serious health and safety issue that has continued to plague college campuses, despite decades of education campaigns promoting moderation towards alcohol. As part of a student advertising competition, undergraduates were asked to develop an integrated marketing campaign focused on reducing binge drinking among college students which would successfully capture attention and resonate with their peers. The campaign the students created, called “The Other Hangover,” takes a unique approach to the binge-drinking issue—focusing attention on the social consequences of overconsumption, such as damage to one’s reputation and the loss of friendships. This case study examines …
The Experience Of Elderly Koreans' Han And Its Implication For Spiritual Care: In The Canadian Context, Jong Park
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Han is an indigenous Korean concept signifying a depth of internalized human suffering, caused primarily by a long history of socio, economic and political oppression. Han can also be understood as the deep psychological wounds of the Korean people. This study focuses on the Han experiences of elderly Korean immigrants living in Canada. The main purpose of the research is to provide a better spiritual care for such seniors who live as a marginal population. For a holistic understanding of their Han, the literature review examines Han-related history, religion and psychology, and explores Han experiences in the family …

Previous studies suggest that task-activated functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can predict future cognitive decline among healthy older adults. The present fMRI study examined the relative sensitivity of semantic memory (SM) versus episodic memory (EM) activation tasks for predicting cognitive decline. Seventy-eight cognitively intact elders underwent neuropsychological testing at entry and after an 18-month interval, with participants classified as cognitively “Stable” or “Declining” based on ≥1.0 SD decline in performance. Baseline fMRI scanning involved SM (famous name discrimination) and EM (name recognition) tasks. SM and EM fMRI activation, along with Apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 status, served as predictors of cognitive …
