In The Breach: Citizenship And Its Approximations, Susan C.B. Coutin
In The Breach: Citizenship And Its Approximations, Susan C.B. Coutin
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
To analyze the forms of membership that are created in the gap between formal citizenship and social belonging, this paper takes up three examples of citizenship in the breach: (1) the 1980-1992 Salvadoran civil war, in which human rights abuses perpetrated in El Salvador effectively constituted Salvadoran migrants as stateless persons, though technically they held Salvadoran citizenship; (2) informal U.S. membership claims put forward by longtime U.S. residents who were deported to El Salvador; and (3) the legal or documentary problems that emerge when legal permanent residents, some of whom immigrated to the United States from El Salvador during the …

Redefining "Atheism" In America: What The United States Could Learn From Europe's Protection Of Atheists, Alan Payne
Redefining "Atheism" In America: What The United States Could Learn From Europe's Protection Of Atheists, Alan Payne
Emory International Law Review
There continues to be a pervasive and persistent stigma against atheists in the United States. The current legal protection of atheists is largely defined by the use of the Establishment Clause to strike down laws that reinforce this stigma or that attempt to deprive atheists of their rights. However, the growing atheist population, a religious pushback against secularism, and a neo-Federalist approach to the religion clauses in the Supreme Court could lead to the rights of atheists being restricted.

Art Criticism
v. : ill. ; 22 cm (original analog pub.),If Art Criticism meets some of its editors’ hopes for it, we shall be able to claim the appearance of some art criticism, with subjects arising from the writers’ or editors’ decisions, rather than the art market’s. Articles on individual critics and on current groups and tendencies will lead towards the adequate history of art criticism so badly needed in relation to art and in relation to the literature of other disciplines. Community Health Sciences
Background: Body weight and its perception play an important role in the physical and mental well-being of a person. Weight perception is found to be a better predictor of weight management behaviour as compared to actual weight. In Pakistan, studies have been done on the prevalence of weight status but weight perception is still unexplored. The study was done to examine relationships between body weight perception, actual weight status, and weight control behaviour among the female university students of Karachi.
Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out during Sep-Nov 2009 on female students in four universities of Karachi, Pakistan. …

Chinese College Students'gender Self-Esteem And Transprejudice, Bing Chen
Chinese College Students'gender Self-Esteem And Transprejudice, Bing Chen
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this study was to examine transprejudice of college students from mainland China. Moreover, this study allowed us to determine if gender self-esteem, which may contribute to transprejudice in Western countries or individualistic societies, is also a significant contributor to transprejudice in mainland China, or a collectivistic society. We explored possible gender differences in transprejudice, and possible differences in prejudice towards transwomen and transmen. Additionally, we used Social Identity Theory to examine the possible relationship between gender self-esteem and transprejudice. Hypotheses were as follows: 1) heterosexual men would endorse more transprejudice than heterosexual women; 2) heterosexual men and …
The Correspondence Of Attachment Dimensions To Prayer Styles Among Undergraduate Students, Nathaniel Lamkin
The Correspondence Of Attachment Dimensions To Prayer Styles Among Undergraduate Students, Nathaniel Lamkin
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite the fact that prayer is a daily practice for many Americans, and is considered by some the heart and soul of spirituality, relatively little research has been conducted to understand the individual differences of people's prayer styles. A previous study found that people who have higher levels of avoidance attachment are less likely to engage in prayers that are designed to facilitate a closer relationship with God (e.g., Meditative and Colloquial). It also found that people who have higher levels of anxious attachment are more likely to engage in help seeking types of prayers (e.g., Petitionary). Since the study, …
Working Memory And Executive Functioning Impairment As Endophenotypes Of Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders, Carina A. Iati
Working Memory And Executive Functioning Impairment As Endophenotypes Of Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders, Carina A. Iati
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Evidence indicates that impairments in working memory and executive functioning exist in individuals who have decompensated into schizophrenia, as well as their genetic relatives. Few studies, however, have examined whether these impairments function as premorbid indicators of vulnerability to schizophrenia-related disorders in the absence of genetic relatedness for risk determination. According to Meehl's (1962, 1990) model of schizotypy individuals vulnerable to schizophrenia-related disorders evidence subtle symptoms of vulnerability, referred to as endophenotypes, regardless of whether eventual decompensation occurs. The present study represents a cross-sectional portion of a larger longitudinal study, and investigates whether individuals who demonstrate an elevated risk for …

Mathematics Career Simulations: An Invitation, Robb Sinn, Marnie Phipps
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
A simulated academic career was combined with inquiry-based learning in an upper-division undergraduate mathematics course. Concepts such as tenure, professional conferences and journals were simulated. Simulation procedures were combined with student-led, inquiry-based classroom formats. A qualitative analysis (ethnography) describes the culture that emerged within the simulation during a pilot test. A discussion follows evaluating the potential for career simulations to invite students to consider graduate studies and academic careers in the STEM disciplines.

Pharmaceuticals, Political Money, And Public Policy: A Theoretical And Empirical Agenda, Paul D. Jorgensen
Pharmaceuticals, Political Money, And Public Policy: A Theoretical And Empirical Agenda, Paul D. Jorgensen
Political Science Faculty Publications
Congress has consistently failed to solve some serious problems with the cost, effectiveness, and safety of pharmaceuticals. In part, this failure results from the pharmaceutical industry convincing legislators to define policy problems in ways that protect industry profits. By targeting campaign contributions to influential legislators and by providing them with selective information, the industry manages to displace the public’s voice in developing pharmaceutical policy.
The Effects Of Top Management Team External Ties And Board Composition On The Strategic Choice Of Late Movers, Jae Wook Yoo, Richard Reed
The Effects Of Top Management Team External Ties And Board Composition On The Strategic Choice Of Late Movers, Jae Wook Yoo, Richard Reed
Business Faculty Publications
Within the context of the monitoring and control function of the board, we extend previous work on the agency view of governance. We examine how the top managers' external ties and board composition directly and interactively influence the strategic choices of firms. Our results indicate that top managers with intra-industry knowledge and experience tend to adopt a resource-imitation strategy whereas those with knowledge and experience from other industries tend to adopt a resource-substitution strategy. The separation of CEO and board chairperson duties also affects strategy selection. In terms of interaction effects, we find that boards with a high ratio of …
The Road To “Severe Obesity”: Weight Loss Surgery Candidates Talk About Their Histories Of Weight Gain, Julia Temple Newhook, Deborah Gregory, Laurie Twells
The Road To “Severe Obesity”: Weight Loss Surgery Candidates Talk About Their Histories Of Weight Gain, Julia Temple Newhook, Deborah Gregory, Laurie Twells
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Much research focuses on the causes of weight gain, but few studies examine the perspectives of those who have been categorized as “severely obese.” This paper discusses the findings of 54 interviews with weight loss surgery candidates in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. We explore participants’ perspectives on their histories of weight gain, focusing on their explanations for weight gain as well as the emotions surrounding their weight gain experiences. We find that the dominant individualized, medicalized construction of obesity both (1) adds to the burden of blame for weight loss surgery candidates, with potential emotional health implications, and (2) overlooks …

Effects Of Low Oxygen On Cytokine And Nitric Oxide Release Of Activated N9 Microglia, Henry Owegi
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Every 16 seconds in the United States, a person suffers a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The major problems in TBI patients are increased intracranial pressure (ICP), and diffuse global ischemia, which leads to cerebral hypoxia. Cerebral ischemia occurs in 65% of patients due to microvascular spasms and brain swelling. Subsequently, cerebral ischemia is exacerbated by the inflammatory processes initiated by microglia. Although therapeutic ICP control has resulted in mortality reduction, cerebral ischemia is still the major contributor to poor neurological outcome. To address this problem, an oxygen-guided therapy was introduced and has resulted in a reduction of both mortality and …

Factors Predicting Internalizing And Externalizing Psychopathology In A Sample Of Inner City Minority Women, Antonio Gonzalez
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Women of minority backgrounds, particularly those of lower socioeconomic status, are vulnerable to a whole host of social and health related problems such as increased rates of depression, incarceration, sexual assault, and premature death. With such vulnerabilities, these women are at increased risk for developing internalizing disorders (i.e., depression and anxiety) and externalizing disorders (i.e., substance abuse, antisocial personality disorder), compared to women of higher socioeconomic status. The purpose of the present research was to examine factors that are predictive of the development of internalizing and externalizing psychopathology in minority women in an effort to construct a comprehensive model of …
Parental Attributions Of Child Behavior As Predictors Of Help-Seeking Behavior In A Community Sample, Jennifer L. Hutchens
Parental Attributions Of Child Behavior As Predictors Of Help-Seeking Behavior In A Community Sample, Jennifer L. Hutchens
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Child and parenting focused interventions are commonly recommended by clinicians; however it is often the case that children and parents do not follow through on treatment. Research examining help seeking behavior related to child concerns has focused on child, parent and family demographics. Other research has considered the influence of parent cognitions, including parenting self-efficacy and parental attributions of child behavior, in predicting attendance for parenting interventions (e.g., Peters, Calam & Harrington, 2005). There is currently limited research that considers parental help seeking in a community sample (Girio-Herrera, Owens, & Langberg, 2013). The purpose of the present study is to …
