Influrence Of Language On Recognition Memory For Motion, Ferhat. Karaman Jan 2013

Influrence Of Language On Recognition Memory For Motion, Ferhat. Karaman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Satellite-framed languages and verb-framed languages differ in how they encode motion events. English encodes or lexicalizes Path in verb particles, prepositional phrases, or satellites associated with the main verb. In contrast, Turkish tends to encode Path in the main verb of a clause. When describing motion events, English speakers typically use verbs that convey information about manner rather than path, whereas Turkish speakers do the opposite. In this study, we investigated whether this crosslinguistic difference between English and Turkish influences how the speakers of these languages perform in a non-linguistic recognition memory task. In a video description task, English speakers …

Site 35, which is associated with the Manteño culture that flourished in the Integration period from A.D. 500 – 1532, has been determined to comprise a singular population that is represented by a minimum of 27 individuals. In addition to more comprehensive conclusions about Site 35, this thesis uses the data from Site 35 in an extended comparison of health among prehistoric sites from six additional …

Middle School Teachers' Usage Of Dynamic Mathematics Learning Environments As Cognitive Instructional Tools, Ana Escuder Jan 2013

Middle School Teachers' Usage Of Dynamic Mathematics Learning Environments As Cognitive Instructional Tools, Ana Escuder

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study described, analyzed, and compared the internal and external factors that prevented or fostered the implementation of a cognitive tool, GeoGebra, in the mathematics practices of 12 middle school teachers who had completed a master's degree program in mathematics successfully. Through the application of a case study approach as a systematic method for the analysis of qualitative data, and under a social constructivist framework, the study examined different factors such as concerns of teachers; their beliefs about technology, mathematics as a subject, math teaching, and learning; external factors such as resources and school support; their TPACK development; and their …

Myth Of The Criminal And Animal Subjecthood In J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace, Ashley B. Harrington Jan 2013

Myth Of The Criminal And Animal Subjecthood In J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace, Ashley B. Harrington

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

J. M. Coetzee's brutal novel Disgrace questions popular understandings of criminality and victimhood by establishing parallels between its various characters and their actions. Through close reading of Coetzee's descriptions of protagonist David Lurie's behaviors and attitudes towards women, non-human animals, and people of color compared with descriptions of the mysterious trio of men who rape Lurie's daughter and coldly kill the dogs in her kennels, I argue that the line Disgrace draws between Lurie and these men is deliberately flimsy, ultimately all but disappearing if we look closely enough at their behaviors and descriptions rather than their justifications. I also …

Narcissism, Adjustment, And Target-Specific Aggression In Preadolescence, Rachel E. Pauletti Jan 2013

Narcissism, Adjustment, And Target-Specific Aggression In Preadolescence, Rachel E. Pauletti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study examined the consequences of self-image failure among narcissistic children. It was hypothesized that narcissistic children who perceive themselves as falling short of their hoped-for grandiose self (e.g., whose self-esteem is low) would not only increase over time in general aggression and decrease prosocial behavior, but also increase in the tendency to direct aggression specifically toward more socially successful peers (i.e., their putative rivals for social status). Participants were 195 (101 boys) fourth through seventh-graders who were tested in both the fall and the spring of a school year. Results yielded some support for the hypotheses. Narcissism combined with …

Older Hispanics Explanatory Model Of Depression, Nohemi Sadule-Rios Jan 2013

Older Hispanics Explanatory Model Of Depression, Nohemi Sadule-Rios

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Researchers have reported a high prevalence of depression among older Hispanics in the United States when compared to other ethnic groups. Cultural variations in the perception of depression sometimes make it difficult to recognize the disorder resulting in older Hispanic patients not being diagnosed and not receiving appropriate treatment. The purpose of this study was to explore older Hispanics’ explanatory model of depression and identify culture-specific factors that may help in the recognition and treatment of depression. A mixed-method design that combined qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Fifty participants were interviewed using Kleinman’s Explanatory Models ethnographic approach with a …

Normative Narratives And Disabled Ideologies In Nabokov’S Lolita And Laughter In The, Oscar Javier Ruiz Jan 2013

Normative Narratives And Disabled Ideologies In Nabokov’S Lolita And Laughter In The, Oscar Javier Ruiz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The works of Vladimir Nabokov have traditionally functioned in a way that challenges its reader to question existing notions of normality. In his works, Nabokov has frequently utilized representations of disability as a means to comment or critique the human condition. Throughout this project I intend to demonstrate how the narratives in both Lolita and Laughter in the Dark function as a normative force which embodies the cultural attitudes regarding disability. This is accomplished through the enforcement of a normative reading by the narrative. It is clear then that Nabakov is attempting to subvert literary conventions by using nontraditional narrators …

Perceived Discrimination Of Muslims In Health Care In The United States, Mary Brigid Martin Jan 2013

Perceived Discrimination Of Muslims In Health Care In The United States, Mary Brigid Martin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Discrimination is not only a human and civil rights offense, but also a detrimental influence on the health outcomes of affected populations. The Muslim population in the United States is a growing religious minority increasingly encountered by health care professionals in the clinical setting. This group has been subject to heightened discrimination since the tragic events of September 11, 2001 and often is misunderstood within the context of American society today. While research has been conducted on discrimination against Muslims in the employment and educational segments of society, more studies are needed which quantify the extent and type of discrimination …

Personality And Perceptions Of Situations From The Thematic Apperception Test: Quantifying Alpha And Beta Press, David G. Serfass Jan 2013

Personality And Perceptions Of Situations From The Thematic Apperception Test: Quantifying Alpha And Beta Press, David G. Serfass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Theoretical models posit that the perception of situations consists of two components: an objective component attributable to the situation being perceived and a subjective component attributable to the person doing the perceiving (Murray, 1938; Rauthmann, 2012; Sherman, Nave & Funder, 2013; Wagerman & Funder, 2009). In this study participants (N = 186) viewed three pictures from the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT; Murray, 1938) and rated the situations contained therein using a new measure of situations, the Riverside Situational Q-Sort (RSQ; Wagerman & Funder, 2009). The RSQ was used to calculate the overall agreement among ratings of situations and to examine …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Two skills necessary for the execution of proficient calculation, retrieving arithmetic facts from memory and accessing number magnitude information, were studied in a group of patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and healthy controls to try to elucidate the locus of impairment in AD-related calculation deficits. This was achieved through the use of an arithmetic production task and a number-matching task as measures of explicit and implicit retrieval of arithmetic facts, and a numerical Stroop task that assesses automatic access to number magnitude representation. AD patients, but not MCI patients, showed high response latencies and a …

Relationship Between Parental Lifestyles, Attachment Style And The Mediating Effect Of Family Environment On The Characteristics Of Their Adult Chldren In Substance Abuse Treatment, John W. Mcilveen Jan 2013

Relationship Between Parental Lifestyles, Attachment Style And The Mediating Effect Of Family Environment On The Characteristics Of Their Adult Chldren In Substance Abuse Treatment, John W. Mcilveen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The role of attachment style in overall family functioning and in individual substance abuse patterns has been researched extensively. Lifestyle constructs have been seen as predictors of substance abuse related behaviors, including future drug related difficulties. Dysfunctional family environments have been seen as predictors of poor mental health outcomes in family members. Despite the high rates of co-morbidity in alcohol and drug dependent individuals, parental lifestyle, attachment style, and the overall influence of family environment on the psychological traits of substance dependent individuals had not been previously examined. This study examined a group of parents and their adult children (actively …

Segregating Stimululs Information For Counterchange And Motion Energy-Determined Motion Perception, Matthew S. Seifert Jan 2013

Segregating Stimululs Information For Counterchange And Motion Energy-Determined Motion Perception, Matthew S. Seifert

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

It has been argued that the perception of apparent motion is based on the detection of counterchange (oppositely signed changes in luminance contrast at pairs of spatial locations) rather than motion energy (spatiotemporal changes in luminance). A constraint in furthering this distinction is that both counterchange and motion energy are present for most motion stimuli. Three experiments used illusory-contour and luminance-based stimuli to segregate (experiments 1 and 2) and combine (experiment 3) counterchange and motion energy information. Motion specified by counterchange was perceived for translating illusory squares over a wide range of frame durations, and preferentially for short motion paths. …

Role Of Location Information In Identifying Degraded Objects, Derrick Schlangen Jan 2013

Role Of Location Information In Identifying Degraded Objects, Derrick Schlangen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Across three experiments, we assessed how location and color information contributes to the identification of an object whose image has been degraded, making its identity ambiguous. In Experiment 1, some of the target objects had fixed locations within the scene. We found that subjects used this location information during search and later to identify the blurred target objects. In Experiment 2, we tested whether location and color information can be combined to identify degraded objects, and results were inconclusive. In Experiment 3, both the location and color of each object was variable but statistically predictive of the object's identity. We …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of this qualitative research, which utilized a narrative design strategy, was to describe the process of self-regulation of a child who has bilateral cochlear implants within the social environment of school. The study investigated the use of self-regulatory strategies by the cochlear implant recipient. It also examined how the child made modifications and monitored learning during activities within the classroom as related to Vygotsky's activity theory and John Dewey's theory of social control. Through data collection of documents, observations, interviews, and researcher field notes, it was found that the child demonstrated several self-regulatory strategies.

Tomorrow Is Yesterday, Robert James Leivers Jan 2013

Tomorrow Is Yesterday, Robert James Leivers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Protosciences, or new sciences trying to establish their legitimacy, are ubiquitous in literature. In the old stories we hear of alchemists who can only dream of the discoveries that modern chemists take for granted, and in the new stories we hear of travelers moving faster than light as our greatest physicists attempt to make that fantasy a reality. Limiting our viewpoint to the modern scientific reductionist view of the universe not only makes little sense if we consider Michael Polanyi's theories of emergence and 'personal knowledge', but it robs medieval scholars for the conceptual credit they are due for theories …

The Rise Of The Super Sidechicks: A Feminist Analysis Of Girls In Superhero Films, Dorothy Ashley Hendricks Jan 2013

The Rise Of The Super Sidechicks: A Feminist Analysis Of Girls In Superhero Films, Dorothy Ashley Hendricks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The superhero film genre has recently witnessed a reinvention of the girl sidekick. Instead of falling back on the perpetuated and well-known stereotypes of female heroines, recent offerings have allowed for several strong and innovative female characters to emerge. This close textual analysis of specific feminist examples from the films, Kick-Ass (2010), Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010), and X-Men: First Class (2012), examines young heroines as having feminist tendencies in a postfeminist moment. This analysis employs aspects of film theory, feminist theory, and also focuses on adaptation as a potentially powerful and problematic tenant of the films. Through this …

Uncounted Cadences, Jill. Lavetsky Jan 2013

Uncounted Cadences, Jill. Lavetsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Uncounted Cadences is a drawing installation in the thesis exhibition that furthers my exploration in tracing movement through psychological and physical geographies. Gestural drawings of human and animal bodies in motion are woven into local landscape imagery that is printed with powdered charcoal through a silkscreen. Using both additive and subtractive processes, the layering and erasure suggest loss, reclamation, and the nature of memory. The drawings are cut and provisionally reassembled into a cinematic sequence as if they are pieces of film being edited and spliced. This process shows an unfolding over time and involves listening to the rhythmic pacing …

Tramping: Alternatives To Traditional American Rites Of Passage, Anthony Vincent Saturno Jan 2013

Tramping: Alternatives To Traditional American Rites Of Passage, Anthony Vincent Saturno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In America today, adolescent boys do not have a structured, ritualized or guided passage From boyhood into manhood. Many young men feel unsure of their manhood even at an age that signifies the transition. This causes young males to need a self--‐created rite of passage. Tramping, the act of travelling by train, hitchhiking or foot, is one way in which young males can independently achieve manhood. This is a literary account of the lives of Jack Kerouac, Chris McCandless, and Zebu Recchia. Their personal stories allow a detailed view of the advantages and disadvantages found in a self--‐created rite of …

Using a series of eight sand trays of varying thematic concepts, the participants were offered a modality to facilitate a synthesization of their continued individuation, presenting a possible neural pathway to connect …

Edith Wharton, Betty. Feuerberg Jan 2013

Edith Wharton, Betty. Feuerberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Edith Wharton uses characterization in the primary three characters in The Age of Innocence to explore the aspects of her life. Early adulthood is represented by May Welland Archer, who was born into New York 400, where society suppressed an individual's emotions, aspirations, and freedoms. The intermediate phase of her life is depicted in Newland Archer, who tests the confining limits of the society to which he belongs and strives to understand the role of emotions in achieving personal satisfaction. Wharton rejected and craved the ties of the New York 400 in the final phase of her life as portrayed …

Edward Gorey's Illustrations Of Misshapen Children, Kristin L. Mcglothlin Jan 2013

Edward Gorey's Illustrations Of Misshapen Children, Kristin L. Mcglothlin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Twentieth century American illustrator Edward Gorey's pen and ink drawings subvert traditional images of children ; his images represent the tenets of disability theory, cuteness, and whiteness in relation to child figures in children's literature. Inspecting Gorey's illustrations provides insight into traditional images of children, and emphasizes how his portraits represent children as disabled figures. I examine four books containing Gorey's illustrations for literary and aesthetic analysis. In The Doubtful Guest, a boy deals with psychological challenges ; in The Beastly Baby and The Shrinking of Treehorn, both the infant and Treehorn live with disabled bodies; The Gashlycrumb Tinies displays …

Effects Of Adolescent Stress On Depressive- And Anxiety-Like Behaviors And Hippocampal Mossy Fibre-Ca3 Remodeling In The Novelty-Seeking Phenotype, Ozge. Oztan Jan 2013

Effects Of Adolescent Stress On Depressive- And Anxiety-Like Behaviors And Hippocampal Mossy Fibre-Ca3 Remodeling In The Novelty-Seeking Phenotype, Ozge. Oztan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Experimentally naive rats show variance in their locomotor reactivity to novelty, some displaying higher (HR) while others displaying lower (LR) reactivity, associated with vulnerability to stress. LRHR phenotype is proposed as an antecedent to the development of stress hyper responsiveness. Results presented here show emergence of antidepressive-like behavior following peripubertal-juvenile exposure to chronic variable physical (CVP) and chronic variable social stress (CVS) in HR rats, and depressive-like behavior following CVP in the LRs. The antidepressive-like behavior in HR rats was accompanied by increased levels of acetylated Histone3 (acH3) and acetylated Histone4 (acH4) at the hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) P2 …

Effectiveness Of Modeling And Rehearsal To Teach Fire Safety Skills To Children With Autism, David Garcia Jan 2013

Effectiveness Of Modeling And Rehearsal To Teach Fire Safety Skills To Children With Autism, David Garcia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Autism is a disorder that affects children at an alarming rate. One out of every 88 children is diagnosed with autism in the United States. The disorder is characterized by communication, social, and behavioral deficits. Children with autism often require specialized teaching methods to learn basic skills that most children acquire without specialized instruction. Relatively few studies have examined strategies for teaching safety skills to individuals with autism. The current study utilized a multiple baseline across participants’ design to evaluate whether a modeling and rehearsal strategy is effective for teaching fire safety skills to children with autism between 4 and …
