Sport Team Fandom, Arousal, And Communication : A Multimethod Comparison Of Sport Team Identification With Psychological, Cognitive, Behavioral, Affective, And Physiological Measures, Shaughan Alan Keaton
Sport Team Fandom, Arousal, And Communication : A Multimethod Comparison Of Sport Team Identification With Psychological, Cognitive, Behavioral, Affective, And Physiological Measures, Shaughan Alan Keaton
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The study of sport fandom is undertaken in a variety of disciplines, including but not limited to communication, psychology, sociology, economics, marketing and business. These investigations are significant because of the ubiquitous presence of sport fandom in world culture and its interdisciplinary adaptability in academia. To date however, there has not been a consistent conceptual or operational definition of sport fandom and related factors such as spectatorship, involvement and identification. Consequently, this lack of cohesiveness has serious ramifications, including lack of comparability in results and an inability to generate consistent evidence of the validity and reliability of the various self-report …

Guarantee Of Children's Well-Being Through Development Of An Effective Family Strengthening System In The Republic Of Kazakhstan, Gulnaz Batyrbaevna Kelekeyeva
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In 2012, 10,887 children resided in state-run residential care institutions in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Out of them, more than 80 percent were children whose parents were alive and known to the authorities, but who have been deprived of parental rights. Institutionalization negatively impacts children's health and development. These children are often subjected to violence, child trafficking, and most of them leave formal care without the skills needed to begin an independent life. The current report provides evidence and proof of the necessity for reforming the national child protection and family strengthening system so as it would be capable to …
Toward A Redefinition Of Musical Learning In The Saxophone Studios Of Argentina, Mauricio Gabriel Aguero
Toward A Redefinition Of Musical Learning In The Saxophone Studios Of Argentina, Mauricio Gabriel Aguero
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The academic teaching of saxophone in Argentina is a recent activity compared with the teaching of others instruments. The curricula have been modeled in European schools, covering exclusively classical music and, therefore, setting aside the particularities Argentine society express through its own music. Composers have written several works for saxophone including local elements, such as folkloric rhythms and tango language; but the students in the academy are not able to learn them in a methodical manner. The aim of this research is to bring to the surface the gap between what is taught in the saxophone classrooms and what the …
Relational Aggression, Social Aggression, And Antisocial Personality Features: An Investigation Of Bullying Behavior In A Sample Of Juvenile Offenders, George Ronald Bell
Relational Aggression, Social Aggression, And Antisocial Personality Features: An Investigation Of Bullying Behavior In A Sample Of Juvenile Offenders, George Ronald Bell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Bullying is a destructive subtype of aggression that can take direct and indirect forms. This study investigated relationships between two indirect forms of bullying (relational aggression and social aggression), the aggressor's level of interpersonal maturity, and antisocial personality features (narcissism and callous-unemotional traits). Participants included 58 male and 21 female offenders between the ages of 13 and 18 from an urban school serving youth who were adjudicated through the juvenile justice system. Data were obtained from a de-identified data set that contained responses to questions from three self-report rating scales: the Young Adult Social Behavior Scale (YASB), the Antisocial Process …

The discourse used as data is collected from a live Korean TV program called “I Miss That Person” (IMTP). From IMTP, I titled the first clip “Han, Youngwoong’s Discourse” as Data 1 and the second clip “Lee, ChunShik’s Discourse” as Data 2. Two clips of each data can be seen at www.youtube.com. The analysis of the media discourse is …
Effects Of Temperament, Attachment, And Parental Sensitivity On The Development Of Adhd, Danielle C. Rubinic
Effects Of Temperament, Attachment, And Parental Sensitivity On The Development Of Adhd, Danielle C. Rubinic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common and well-researched childhood disorders. Despite extensive knowledge, there remains a demand to understand ADHD from a developmental psychopathology perspective. Even more important than recognizing symptoms, it is necessary to determine how biological and environmental factors in a child's life play a role in the development of ADHD. In the proposed study, three significant factors were examined in relation to ADHD: attachment, temperament, and parental sensitivity with an emphasis on goodness of fit. Regression analyses were utilized to examine data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort (ECLS-B) to determine …

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Personal/Professional Experiences And Training Of School Psychologists And Their Attitudes Toward The Education Of Gifted Students, Angela Louise Spaniolo-Depouw
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A resurgence of interest in gifted students and gifted education highlights the importance of examining attitudes of school psychologists related to the identification and programming for gifted students. This study explored the relationships between professional experiences, personal experiences, demographics, and previous training and the attitudes of school psychologists toward gifted students and gifted education.
A sample of 125 state-certified school psychologists in Michigan participated in a two-part, web-based survey, which provided descriptive data and measured attitudes toward gifted students and their education. Data were analyzed using a combination of descriptive and inferential statistics.
Seven findings were notable in this study: …
Elementary School Students’ Achievement Emotions: Influences Of Gender And Relations To Motivation And Achievement, Stephanie Lichtenfeld, Robert Stupnisky
Elementary School Students’ Achievement Emotions: Influences Of Gender And Relations To Motivation And Achievement, Stephanie Lichtenfeld, Robert Stupnisky
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Emotions are important determinants of motivation, behavior, and learning at all educational levels. Surprisingly, apart from studies on test anxiety, research on achievement emotions has been largely lacking until recently. Furthermore, there are only a few studies on students’ achievement emotions in the elementary school years. The present chapter draws attention to the importance of achievement emotions and reviews findings on important antecedents and consequences of achievement emotions, particularly among elementary school students. Findings on gender differences concerning emotions and their impact on learning and achievement will specifically be attended to.
Heterosexual Romantic Relationships And Mate Preference In College Students From The U.S. And China: Cross-Cultural And Gender Difference In Beliefs And Attitudes, Feiran Chen
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
This study examines how culture influences U.S. and Chinese college students’ mate preferences, and attitudes and beliefs on the following elements of romantic relationships: love as the only basis for marriage, premarital sex, and the influence of family and friends on mate choice. I surveyed 291 American participants and 292 Chinese participants and found that: Overall, American and Chinese participants vary in their mate preferences; Most American participants, especially female participants, would be more likely to “marry for love,” whereas Chinese participants, especially female participants, would be more likely to consider health and financial conditions in a mate; Chinese participants …
Examination Of The Impact Of Living Arrangements And Marital Status On Depression Among Older Adult Male Veterans, Nicole M. Behne
Examination Of The Impact Of Living Arrangements And Marital Status On Depression Among Older Adult Male Veterans, Nicole M. Behne
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
As the older adult population grows, depression rates are also on the rise. This is especially evident among American veterans, who experience a depression incidence close to 30%, making it one of the most common diagnoses treated within the Veterans Health Administraiton (Hankin, Spiro, Miller et al, as cited in Cully, Zimmer, Khan & Petersen, 2008).
The purpose of this study is to identify key demographic variables associated with depression among older male veterans. The results could help improve patterns of care, hopefully improving the management of depression. The retrospective descriptive study uses existing medical record data to identify patterns …
Music And Aspects Of Identity In People With Alzheimer's Disease, Rachel L. Heying
Music And Aspects Of Identity In People With Alzheimer's Disease, Rachel L. Heying
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Music has been used as a healing tool for centuries, now commonly in the form of music therapy. Music therapy has been beneficial for people with Alzheimer’s disease by brightening moods, increasing social interaction, and reducing the difficulty of finding words (Brotons, Koger, & Pickett-Cooper, 1997). In the current study, the effect of music on aspects of identity in individuals with Alzheimer’s was investigated. Twenty-three participants (nine with Alzheimer’s, fourteen non-Alzheimer’s controls) responded to the Autobiographical Memory Interview (AMI) and the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) with and without music played immediately beforehand. It was hypothesized that music would increase autobiographical …
Treatment Efficacy Of Exposure Therapy And Mindfulness Meditation On Physiological And Self-Perceived Measures Of Stress For A Certain Public Speaking Task, Maria A. Stevens
Treatment Efficacy Of Exposure Therapy And Mindfulness Meditation On Physiological And Self-Perceived Measures Of Stress For A Certain Public Speaking Task, Maria A. Stevens
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
Empirical research has demonstrated that the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) consists of public speaking that has been used effectively to increase physiological and perceived stress. In addition, exposure therapy and mindfulness meditation have been widely used to decrease stress in a clinical setting. The purpose of this study was to see if practicing an exposure exercise or mindfulness meditation would decrease physiological and perceived measures of anxiety after speaking in front of a video camera. A total of 19 undergraduates were assigned to one of three conditions. The control condition completed no preparation, the mindfulness meditation condition practiced a …
An Arms Race Or Bureaucratic Dogfight? Assessing The Underlying Causes Of India’S Nuclear Force Development, Drew Stommes
An Arms Race Or Bureaucratic Dogfight? Assessing The Underlying Causes Of India’S Nuclear Force Development, Drew Stommes
Honors Theses, 1963-2015
States have developed military capabilities throughout the history of the nation-state international system. Examples include the Anglo-German naval arms race at the beginning of the 21st century and the United States-Soviet Union arms competition during the cold War. One contemporary example of an arms buildup can be seen with the expansion and enhancement of India’s nuclear arsenal. Drawing from two broad bodies of literature that focus on the role of external and internal causes of arms buildups, I argue that India’s nuclear buildup has been caused primarily by the external threat posed by Pakistan, and less so by China. …
Utilizing Students As Behavior Change Agents : An Example Using Check-In/Check-Out, Evan Henry Dart
Utilizing Students As Behavior Change Agents : An Example Using Check-In/Check-Out, Evan Henry Dart
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
While there is no shortage of evidence-based interventions designed to address the academic and behavioral difficulties of students in schools, it can be difficult to find adults that are available to implement them consistently. To remedy this problem, students’ peers have often been utilized effectively as academic interventionists in the schools and as behavioral interventionists for students with disabilities. Two studies were designed to investigate the effectiveness of a peer-mediated intervention for students at-risk for developing behavioral disorders. Check-in/Check-out (CICO), a mentor-based intervention traditional implemented by adults, was modified so that it could be easily implemented by elementary school students. …
Causes And Consequences Of Conflict : Exploring The Influence Of Honor-Based Norms And Values On The Experience Of Intimate Partner Violence In The United States, Michelle Elaine Pence
Causes And Consequences Of Conflict : Exploring The Influence Of Honor-Based Norms And Values On The Experience Of Intimate Partner Violence In The United States, Michelle Elaine Pence
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The three studies in this dissertation were posed with the common goal of revealing possible explanations for variations in the causes and consequences of interpersonal violence across regional cultures of the United States. Study 1 posed and tested two hypotheses related to the distribution of male-perpetrated intimate partner homicide across regions of the United States. The South and West, two regions characterized in full (the South) or in part (the West) by honor cultures, emerged as the regions with the highest rates of argument- and conflict- related, male-on-female intimate partner homicides in single victim/single offender incidents. Explanations provided at the …
Socially Oriented Negative Self-Referent Cognition : The Development And Validation Of A Measure, Brittany Moree Rudy
Socially Oriented Negative Self-Referent Cognition : The Development And Validation Of A Measure, Brittany Moree Rudy
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Social phobia, a debilitating disorder among children and adolescents, is thought to be made up of cognitive, behavioral, and physiological components. However, in children, the cognitive component of this disorder has been largely neglected by researchers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to create and validate a new instrument, the "Socially Oriented Negative Anxious Statement (SONAS) scale,” that assesses socially oriented negative self-referent cognition in a younger population. Measurement validation procedures including, reliability, validity, and factor analysis, were utilized to examine the proposed questionnaire. Results indicated that the SONAS scale demonstrated good psychometric properties, including a sound two-factor structure …

Addressing The Higher Level Language Skills For The Common Core State Standards In Kindergarten, Ashley Bourque Meaux
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Kindergarten is a critical year, providing a foundation for children’s success in school. With a common set of standards, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), finalized and made available to states for adoption critical skills in numeracy and literacy will be uniformed from kindergarten through high school. Some children enter school with a sufficient foundation to support success in kindergarten and subsequent years. However, some children either because of lack of exposure during preschool years (e.g., Aikens & Barbarin, 2008; Hart & Risley, 1995; Schacter, 1979; Snow, Burns & Griffin, 1998) or because of language delays associated with developmental disabilities …

Generalizabiity And Dependability Of Brief Behavior Rating Scales For Social Skills, Lisa L. Minor
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
While there are appropriate tools to progress monitor academics, there is no universally accepted tool to progress monitor social behavior. The current study proposed the development of a series of brief behavior rating scales to correspond to important social skills domains on the Social Skills Rating Scale (Gresham & Elliott, 2008) and to evaluate the resulting psychometric features through generalizability theory. Data was collected in a preschool classroom in a 6 persons by 2 rater by 6-7 items by occasions mixed model design. Data was analyzed series of generalizability and decision studies to investigate sources of variability and to determine …
What You Attend To Is What You Remember : Investigating The Unit Of Representation In Visual Working Memory, Amanda Elaine Van Lamsweerde
What You Attend To Is What You Remember : Investigating The Unit Of Representation In Visual Working Memory, Amanda Elaine Van Lamsweerde
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The unit of representation in visual working memory (VWM) is a matter of some debate. The object benefit occurs when more features are remembered when they are combined into fewer objects. This has been used to support the perspective that objects are the unit of representation in VWM. However, the object benefit occurs only for two features from different dimensions (e.g., a blue circle: color and shape) but not two features from the same dimension (e.g., a red-and-blue bi-colored square: two colors). This suggests that both objects and features may be important in determining VWM capacity. The purpose of this …

Exploring The Third Culture Building Approach For Effective Cross-Cultural Interaction For Black American Professionals In Predominantly White Institutions, Tessa R. Sutton
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Professional interactions that are both functional and mutually beneficial are rare. The purpose of this study is to explore an application of a Third Culture Building (TCB) approach, a mutually constructed interpersonal process between two individuals, for Black American professionals (with advanced knowledge acquired from institutions of higher learning), to generate a new space in Predominantly White Institutions (PWis). These institutions include settings where the racial composition is becoming consistently more diverse (through past desegregation efforts). Although the U.S. has moved beyond integration and the monumental Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, racism and intercultural barriers that prevent functional cross-cultural …
Identifying Meaningful Types In Daily Life, Brittany M. Thompson
Identifying Meaningful Types In Daily Life, Brittany M. Thompson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Despite long-held recognition of the importance of situations in psychological understanding and analysis, current research is lacking in discernment of structurally important elements of situations as they relate to behavior (Funder et al., 2012). Using the Riverside Situational Q-sort (RSQ: Wagerman & Funder, 2009), an 89-item measure used to assess the psychological properties of situations, the major aim of this study was to identify a reliable set of categories or types of situations that people experience every day. Data was collected online from a U.S. sample (N = 186). Participants were asked to recall details about a situation he or …

Infants' Perception Of Synthetic-Like Multisensory Relations, Nicholas J. Minar
Infants' Perception Of Synthetic-Like Multisensory Relations, Nicholas J. Minar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Studies have shown that human infants can integrate the multisensory attributes of their world and, thus, have coherent perceptual experiences. Multisensory attributes can either specify non-arbitrary (e.g., amodal stimulus/event properties and typical relations) or arbitrary properties (e.g., visuospatial height and pitch). The goal of the current study was to expand on Walker et al.'s (2010) finding that 4-month-old infants looked longer at rising/falling objects when accompanied by rising/falling pitch than when accompanied by falling/rising pitch. We did so by conducting two experiments. In Experiment 1, our procedure matched Walker et al.'s (2010) single screen presentation while in Experiment 2 we …
Influrence Of Language On Recognition Memory For Motion, Ferhat. Karaman
Influrence Of Language On Recognition Memory For Motion, Ferhat. Karaman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Satellite-framed languages and verb-framed languages differ in how they encode motion events. English encodes or lexicalizes Path in verb particles, prepositional phrases, or satellites associated with the main verb. In contrast, Turkish tends to encode Path in the main verb of a clause. When describing motion events, English speakers typically use verbs that convey information about manner rather than path, whereas Turkish speakers do the opposite. In this study, we investigated whether this crosslinguistic difference between English and Turkish influences how the speakers of these languages perform in a non-linguistic recognition memory task. In a video description task, English speakers …

Middle School Teachers' Usage Of Dynamic Mathematics Learning Environments As Cognitive Instructional Tools, Ana Escuder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study described, analyzed, and compared the internal and external factors that prevented or fostered the implementation of a cognitive tool, GeoGebra, in the mathematics practices of 12 middle school teachers who had completed a master's degree program in mathematics successfully. Through the application of a case study approach as a systematic method for the analysis of qualitative data, and under a social constructivist framework, the study examined different factors such as concerns of teachers; their beliefs about technology, mathematics as a subject, math teaching, and learning; external factors such as resources and school support; their TPACK development; and their …
Myth Of The Criminal And Animal Subjecthood In J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace, Ashley B. Harrington
Myth Of The Criminal And Animal Subjecthood In J.M. Coetzee's Disgrace, Ashley B. Harrington
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
J. M. Coetzee's brutal novel Disgrace questions popular understandings of criminality and victimhood by establishing parallels between its various characters and their actions. Through close reading of Coetzee's descriptions of protagonist David Lurie's behaviors and attitudes towards women, non-human animals, and people of color compared with descriptions of the mysterious trio of men who rape Lurie's daughter and coldly kill the dogs in her kennels, I argue that the line Disgrace draws between Lurie and these men is deliberately flimsy, ultimately all but disappearing if we look closely enough at their behaviors and descriptions rather than their justifications. I also …
Narcissism, Adjustment, And Target-Specific Aggression In Preadolescence, Rachel E. Pauletti
Narcissism, Adjustment, And Target-Specific Aggression In Preadolescence, Rachel E. Pauletti
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study examined the consequences of self-image failure among narcissistic children. It was hypothesized that narcissistic children who perceive themselves as falling short of their hoped-for grandiose self (e.g., whose self-esteem is low) would not only increase over time in general aggression and decrease prosocial behavior, but also increase in the tendency to direct aggression specifically toward more socially successful peers (i.e., their putative rivals for social status). Participants were 195 (101 boys) fourth through seventh-graders who were tested in both the fall and the spring of a school year. Results yielded some support for the hypotheses. Narcissism combined with …
Older Hispanics Explanatory Model Of Depression, Nohemi Sadule-Rios
Older Hispanics Explanatory Model Of Depression, Nohemi Sadule-Rios
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Researchers have reported a high prevalence of depression among older Hispanics in the United States when compared to other ethnic groups. Cultural variations in the perception of depression sometimes make it difficult to recognize the disorder resulting in older Hispanic patients not being diagnosed and not receiving appropriate treatment. The purpose of this study was to explore older Hispanics’ explanatory model of depression and identify culture-specific factors that may help in the recognition and treatment of depression. A mixed-method design that combined qualitative and quantitative methods was used. Fifty participants were interviewed using Kleinman’s Explanatory Models ethnographic approach with a …
