Effects Of Environmental Characteristics On The Fish Assemblages Of High Latitude Kelp Forests In South-Central Alaska, Terril P. Efird
Effects Of Environmental Characteristics On The Fish Assemblages Of High Latitude Kelp Forests In South-Central Alaska, Terril P. Efird
Marine Biology
Alaskan kelp forests are patchy habitats, varying greatly in size, physical complexity, and biotic and abiotic characteristics, and are important to fish communities. Patchy habitats often support different communities on patch edges versus interiors, while patch size and physical complexity are typically correlated to the resident community structure. This study quantified the biological and physical heterogeneity within different sized kelp forests and identified which factors are important in structuring the associated fish communities. Fish and habitat surveys were conducted at ten kelp forests of varying sizes. Significantly different fish communities were found at edge compared to interior locations. The relative …
Carbon Biogeochemistry Of The Eastern Bering Sea Shelf, Jessica Cross
Carbon Biogeochemistry Of The Eastern Bering Sea Shelf, Jessica Cross
Marine Biology
The uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO₂) has caused perturbations to marine biogeochemistry in recent years, including decreasing ocean pH and carbonate mineral saturation states (Ω). Collectively termed ocean acidification (OA), these conditions hinder the growth of calcium carbonate shells and effectively reduce habitat for some marine calcifiers. Given that the Bering Sea is one of the world's most productive marine ecosystems and supports both commercial fishing industries and subsistence communities, it is integral to understand its susceptibility to OA. Here, new observations of the organic and inorganic carbon systems are used to identify mechanisms leading to CO₂ accumulation and …

Undergraduate research experiences have become an integral part of the Hamilton College chemistry experience. The major premise of the chemistry department’s curriculum is that research is a powerful teaching tool. Curricular offerings have been developed and implemented to better prepare students for the independence required for successful undergraduate research experiences offered during the academic year and the summer. Administrative support has played a critical role in our ability to initiate and sustain scholarly research programs for all faculty members in the department. The research-rich curriculum is built directly upon or derived from the scholarly research agendas of our faculty members. …
A Kinetic Study Of Aqueous Calcium Carbonate, Derek Daniel Harris
A Kinetic Study Of Aqueous Calcium Carbonate, Derek Daniel Harris
Theses and Dissertations
Amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) precipitation is modeled using particle nucleation, growth, and aggregation. The particles are tracked in terms of their radial size and particle density using direct quadrature method of moments (DQMOM). Four separate nucleation models are implemented and are compared to experimental data. In discord with a recent study, it is shown that classical nucleation, coupled with equilibrium chemistry, is in good agreement with experimental data. Novel nucleation mechanisms are presented which fit the experimental data with slightly greater accuracy. Using equilibrium chemistry it is shown that the equilibrium value of ACC is pKeq = 7.74 at 24C, …
Three Dimensional Volcano-Acoustic Source Localization At Karymsky Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia, Colin Rowell
Three Dimensional Volcano-Acoustic Source Localization At Karymsky Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia, Colin Rowell
Geosciences
We test two methods of 3-D acoustic source localization on volcanic explosions and small-scale jetting events at Karymsky Volcano, Kamchatka, Russia. Recent infrasound studies have provided evidence that volcanic jets produce low-frequency aerodynamic sound (jet noise) similar to that from man-made jet engines. Man-made jets are known to produce sound through turbulence along the jet axis, but discrimination of sources along the axis of a volcanic jet requires a network of sufficient topographic relief to attain resolution in the vertical dimension. At Karymsky Volcano, the topography of an eroded edifice adjacent to the active cone provided a platform for the …
Aspen Leaf Miner (Phyllocnistis Populiella) Oviposition Site Preference Mediated By Expression Of Extrafloral Nectaries, Russell Dennis
Aspen Leaf Miner (Phyllocnistis Populiella) Oviposition Site Preference Mediated By Expression Of Extrafloral Nectaries, Russell Dennis
Biological Sciences
As herbivorous insects choose where to lay their eggs, maximizing larval performance (optimal oviposition) may be at odds with adult foraging (optimal foraging). Aspen leaf miners (Phyllocnistis populiella; ALM) choose between leaves with or without extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) as oviposition sites on quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.). Reduced ALM mining on leaves with EFNs may be linked to predators that defend leaves and feed at EFNs, and to increased concentrations of secondary leaf compounds. However, direct responses of adult ALM to EFN expression may also explain differences in ALM mining among leaves with and without EFNs. ALM might be less …
Ecological Drivers Of Mercury Accumulation In Threespine Stickleback Fish, James J. Willacker
Ecological Drivers Of Mercury Accumulation In Threespine Stickleback Fish, James J. Willacker
Biological Sciences
I utilized the ecological diversity displayed in the Cook Inlet adaptive radiation of threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus species complex, hereafter 'stickleback') to examine the drivers of intra- and inter-population variation in total mercury (THg) concentrations. I examined the importance of sex, trophic position (TP), and habitat-specific foraging (measured as the proportion of the diet derived from benthic sources; a) in stickleback from Benka Lake, Alaska, a lake with both benthic and limnetic ecotypes. The results demonstrate that both sex and habitat-specific foraging are important determinants of THg concentrations in this threespine stickleback population. Specifically, male stickleback and stickleback foraging in …
Peeking Through A Frosty Window: Molecular Insights Into The Communities Of Arctic Soil Fungi, Ina Timling
Peeking Through A Frosty Window: Molecular Insights Into The Communities Of Arctic Soil Fungi, Ina Timling
Biological Sciences
Fungi are thought to be one of the most diverse groups of organisms in the Arctic. They drive mineral and energy cycles and influence the occurrence of other organisms as mutualists (mycorrhizae, endophytes, lichens), decomposers and pathogens. Nevertheless, information on fungal biodiversity and distribution patterns in relation to environments across the Arctic is still sparse. Molecular methods were used to examine the diversity and community structures of ectomycorrhizal fungi (EMF) associated with two principal arctic host plants, Salix aretica and Dryas integrifolia, as well as total soil fungal communities of adjacent disturbed and undisturbed areas of patterned-ground features across the …

The Millennium Development Goal of poverty reduction has been achieved ahead of the 2015 deadline. Human development indicators have improved significantly in almost all countries with very few exceptions.
Developing countries now account for almost half the world’s income, and most of the growth in the global economy in the post-2007 period has been contributed by them. Technological revolution particularly in information and communications technology has been a major driver of economic growth.
Strategies of the past, however successful in boosting growth and alleviating poverty, have given rise to second-generation problems that have surfaced in the last decade or so. …
Observation And Analysis On The Characteristics Of Strain Induced By Frost Heave For A Full-Scale Buried, Chilled Gas Pipeline, Kun Yang
Engineering
This thesis examines the strain characteristics of a large-scale, buried chilled gas pipeline in the discontinuous permafrost region. A full-scale chilled pipeline gas experiment was conducted in Fairbanks, Alaska. The test pipeline had a length of 105 m and a diameter of 0.9 m. One-third of the pipeline was located in permafrost and the rest was in non-permafrost. The monitoring data were collected from December 1999 to January 2005 including both freezing and thawing phases. In the transition zone between frozen and unfrozen soil, the foundation experienced a vertical movement caused by differential frost heave. The test results indicated that …
Decline Curve Analysis And Enhanced Shale Oil Recovery Based On Eagle Ford Shale Data, Dieudonne K. Delaihdem
Decline Curve Analysis And Enhanced Shale Oil Recovery Based On Eagle Ford Shale Data, Dieudonne K. Delaihdem
Engineering
Transient and fracture dominated flow regimes in tight permeability shale reservoirs with hydraulically fractured horizontal wells impose many unconventional challenges. These include execution of appropriate shale decline curve analysis and the optimization of hydrocarbons recovery. Additionally, short production profiles available are inadequate for accurate production decline analysis. This research assessed the effectiveness of Arps' decline curve analysis and recently established methods--power law exponential analysis, logistic growth analysis, Duong's method and the author's approach--to predict future production of horizontal wells in the Eagle Ford Shale. Simulation models investigated history matching, enhanced shale oil recovery, and drainage area beyond stimulated reservoir volume. …

Performance Analysis Of Three Nanofluids In Liquid To Gas And Liquid To Liquid Heat Exchangers, Dustin R. Ray
Engineering
One purpose of this research was to analyze the thermal and fluid dynamic performance of nanofluids in an automotive radiator (liquid to gas). Detailed computations were performed on an automotive radiator using three different nanofluids containing aluminum oxide, copper oxide and silicon dioxide nanoparticles dispersed in the base fluid, 60:40 ethylene glycol and water (EG/W) by mass. The computational scheme adopted was the effectiveness-Number of Transfer Unit ( -- NTU) method encoded in Matlab. The computational scheme was validated by comparing the predicted results with that of the base fluid reported by other researchers. Then, the scheme was adapted to …
Analysis Of An Oscillating Plate Coupled With Fluid, Michael J. Nash
Analysis Of An Oscillating Plate Coupled With Fluid, Michael J. Nash
Engineering
The mechanical vibration of an oscillating cantilever plate is studied to determine the interaction of a plate coupled with air and with water. Experimental data was collected and analyzed using multiple methods including Fast Fourier Transform, wavelet analysis, and the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) to characterize the behavior of the plate. The HHT is able to process nonlinear and nonstationary signals and provides more meaningful information compared to the traditionally used Fourier transform for similar applications. The HHT was found to be appropriate and more descriptive for the analysis of coupled fluid-structure systems. Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) was also used …
Investigating The Effects Of Land Use On Small Mammal Populations, Emily Vincent
Investigating The Effects Of Land Use On Small Mammal Populations, Emily Vincent
Student Research
Introduction
The DePauw Nature Park is an excellent site to study the effects of land use on ecosystems. The recent construction of a small farm and the recent restoration of farmland into a prairie provide sites to study how changes in land use affect ecosystems. We studied the effects of land use changes on small mammal communities at the campus farm, an old field next to the campus farm, and a restored prairie.
Hypotheses
We hypothesized that the abundance and diversity of small mammals would be highest in the restored prairie and lowest in the campus farm.
Methods
We used …
Using The Generalized Interpolation Material Point Method For Fluid-Solid Interactions Induced By Surface Tension, Liangbiao Chen, N/A 陈 良彪
Using The Generalized Interpolation Material Point Method For Fluid-Solid Interactions Induced By Surface Tension, Liangbiao Chen, N/A 陈 良彪
Engineering
This thesis is devoted to the development of new, Generalized Interpolation Material Point Method (GIMP)-based algorithms for handling surface tension and contact (wetting) in fluid-solid interaction (FSI) problems at small scales. In these problems, surface tension becomes so dominant that its influence on both fluids and solids must be considered. Since analytical solutions for most engineering problems are usually unavailable, numerical methods are needed to describe and predict complicated time-dependent states in the solid and fluid involved due to surface tension effects. Traditional computational methods for handling fluid-solid interactions may not be effective due to their weakness in solving large-deformation …

Variation Found In Rates Of Restraint And Seclusion Among Students With A Disability, Douglas J. Gagnon, Marybeth J. Mattingly, Vincent J. Connelly
Carsey Publications
The restraint and seclusion of individuals—practices usually associated with highly restrictive environments—are extreme responses to student behavior used in some public schools. In this brief, authors Douglas Gagnon, Marybeth Mattingly, and Vincent Connelly report that restraint and seclusion are used much more frequently on students with a disability than on students without a disability. In addition, the majority of U.S. school districts does not restrain or seclude students with a disability; 59.3 percent of districts report no instances of restraint, while 82.5 percent do not report a single instance of seclusion. However, a small proportion of districts report exceedingly high …
Study Of The Crafting Industry In Croatia: Insight Into Individual, Sara Milic
Study Of The Crafting Industry In Croatia: Insight Into Individual, Sara Milic
Theses
This research explores several elements of the Croatian crafting scene; individual motivations of crafters, how the community functions and common business practices. The study is qualitative and part phenomenological, part ethnographic in nature. The main goal was to collect information and data that can act as a foundation for further research. The key methods were in-depth interviews with several Croatian crafters, observation at crafting events and content analysis of online sources and promotional material. The main findings showed that many crafters obtain artistic fulfilment from their art, some turned to crafting out of financial necessity and others were seeking independence. …
The Phylogeography And Population Genetic Structure Of Least Cisco (Coregonus Sardinella) In Alaska, Veronica M. Padula
The Phylogeography And Population Genetic Structure Of Least Cisco (Coregonus Sardinella) In Alaska, Veronica M. Padula
Fisheries
The least cisco (Coregonus sardinella) is a whitefish species broadly distributed across the Arctic regions of Russia, Alaska, and Canada, and little is known about the genetic relationships among groups within this species. We investigated the genetic relationships among least cisco on two landscape scales. On a broader landscape scale, we investigated the relationships among populations across the state of Alaska by comparing mitochondria) DNA (mtDNA) sequences. On a finer landscape scale, we investigated the relationships among least cisco populations in closely located lakes on the Arctic Coastal Plain by comparing microsatellite DNA haplotypes. Data from mtDNA suggest that least …
Growth Of Chum Salmon In Relation To Population Abundance And Climate In The Eastern North Pacific Ocean And The Recruitment Of Pollock In The Eastern Bering Sea, Ellen Martinson Yasumiishi
Growth Of Chum Salmon In Relation To Population Abundance And Climate In The Eastern North Pacific Ocean And The Recruitment Of Pollock In The Eastern Bering Sea, Ellen Martinson Yasumiishi
Fisheries
Global climate change is expected to change the distribution and growth of marine species. Therefore, understanding how climate, ocean productivity, and population abundance affect the dynamics of marine species will help predict how growth and recruitment of marine species will respond to future changes in climatic and oceanic conditions. Statistically significant intertemporal correlations have been observed between a variety of environmental factors and recruitment, growth, mortality, and abundance of fish populations. However, because these correlative relationships are not reflective of the actual biophysical processes, the relationships can break down, particularly when used for forecasting. Failure of these simple correlative relationships …
Seasonal Movement Patterns And Habitat Occupancy Of Kotzebue Region Inconnu, Nicholas J. Smith
Seasonal Movement Patterns And Habitat Occupancy Of Kotzebue Region Inconnu, Nicholas J. Smith
Fisheries
Inconnu Stenodus leucichthys are large, long-lived piscivorous whitefish harvested in subsistence and sport fisheries in Alaska. My study was conducted to describe the seasonal movements and habitat occupancy of inconnu in the Selawik and Kobuk River drainages, Alaska, from 2010 through 2012. Methods consisted of surgically implanting acoustic telemetry tags in 80 fish from both rivers in 2010 and 2011 (n = 320), and deploying a fixed array of 20 Vemco VR2W acoustic receiving stations affixed with archival tags throughout Selawik Lake and Hotham Inlet. Tagged inconnu detections revealed that Selawik and Kobuk River inconnu displayed a high degree of …
Tattoo Stigma And Job Discrimination, Phil Drazewski
Tattoo Stigma And Job Discrimination, Phil Drazewski
Theses and Dissertations
Recent research (Madera & Hebl, 2011) has found that visible stigmas can lead to discrimination against stigmatized individuals in the form of lower job applicant ratings. Tattooed individuals may be one group that faces such discrimination. People with tattoos are perceived less positively than non-tattooed people (Martin & Dula, 2010; Resenhoeft, Villa, & Wiseman, 2008), which may be the result of a tattoo stigma. Pryor & Reeder (2011) suggested that one hallmark of stigmas is that they evoke implicit negative attitudes. In a pilot study, participants implicitly and explicitly evaluated tattooed and non-tattooed individuals, and a tattoo stigma was supported. …
Re-Storing The Earth: A Phenomenological Study Of Living Sustainably, Jessica B. Buckley
Re-Storing The Earth: A Phenomenological Study Of Living Sustainably, Jessica B. Buckley
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Living sustainably evokes ideas of lived, bodily engagement with and perception of the earth. Yet, modern ways of thinking and speaking have slowly alienated the earth from consciousness. Using phenomenological methods, the author examines the experience of living sustainably, exploring her own background and the idea of restoring the earth to consciousness, before examining the lives of two students dedicated to living sustainably. Components of upholding the earth, in-volving humanity, perceiving differences in studying and embodying sustainability, and engaging in choices fill the experience of living sustainably.

Feedbacks Based On Hyperspectral Measurements Of The Air-Sea Temperature Difference, Adam Chambers
Feedbacks Based On Hyperspectral Measurements Of The Air-Sea Temperature Difference, Adam Chambers
Open Access Theses
Ship-based measurements of the air-sea temperature difference (air-sea ΔT) are analyzed and presented with a focus on the temperature difference probability distribution and causes of its stability and variability. By taking the measurements with a hyperspectral infrared radiometer, temperatures of both the lower atmosphere and the skin layer of the ocean are acquired by a single, well-calibrated instrument. Consider that for each radiometric cruise deployment, when the air-sea ΔT measurements are plotted in a histogram, a mean air-sea ΔT peak at about -1 K becomes apparent regardless of measurement location or time of year. The large amount of air-sea ΔT …

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Background: Regulatory monitoring data have been the most common exposure data resource in studies of the association between long-term PM2.5 components and health. However, data collected for regulatory purposes may not be compatible with epidemiological study.
Objectives: We aimed to explore three important features of the PM2.5 component monitoring data obtained from multiple sources to combine all available data for developing spatio-temporal prediction models in the National Particle Component and Toxicity (NPACT) study.
Methods: The NPACT monitoring data were collected in an extensive monitoring campaign targeting cohort participants. The regulatory monitoring data were obtained from the Chemical Speciation …

Prediction Of Fine Particulate Matter Chemical Components For The Multi-Ethnic Study Of Atherosclerosis Cohort: A Comparison Of Two Modeling Approaches, Sun-Young Kim, Lianne Sheppard, Silas Bergen, Adam A. Szpiro, Paul D. Sampson, Joel Kaufman, Sverre Vedal
UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Recent epidemiological cohort studies of the health effects of PM2.5 have developed exposure estimates from advanced exposure prediction models. Such models represent spatial variability across participant residential locations. However, few cohort studies have developed exposure predictions for PM2.5 components. We used two exposure modeling approaches to obtain long-term average predicted concentrations for four PM2.5 components: sulfur, silicon, and elemental and organic carbon (EC and OC). The models were specifically developed for the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) cohort as a part of the National Particle Component and Toxicity (NPACT) study. The spatio-temporal model used 2-week average measurements …
