Representation Of Object-In-Context Within Mouse Hippocampal Neuronal Activity, Herborg Nanna Asgeirsdottir Jan 2013

Representation Of Object-In-Context Within Mouse Hippocampal Neuronal Activity, Herborg Nanna Asgeirsdottir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The rodent hippocampus is critical for processing spatial memory but its contribution to non-spatial, specifically object memory is debated. The cognitive map theory of hippocampal function states that the hippocampus stores relationships of goal locations (places) to discrete items (objects) encountered within environments. Dorsal CA1 place cells were recorded in male C57BL/6J mice performing three variations of the novel object recognition paradigm to define "object-in-context" representation of hippocampal neuronal activity that may support object memory. Results indicate, (i) that place field stability is higher when polarizing environmental cues are provided during object recognition; (ii) hippocampal place fields remain stable throughout …

Simulation Study On Option Pricing Under Jump Diffusion Models, Justin Rodrigues Jan 2013

Simulation Study On Option Pricing Under Jump Diffusion Models, Justin Rodrigues

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The main objective of this thesis is to simulate, evaluate and discuss several methods for pricing European-style options. The Black-Scholes model has long been considered the standard method for pricing options. One of the downfalls of the Black-Scholes model is that it is strictly continuous and does not incorporate discrete jumps. This thesis will consider two alternate Levy models that include discretized jumps; The Merton Jump Diffusion and Kou's Double Exponential Jump Diffusion. We will use each of the three models to price real world stock data through software simulations and explore the results. Keywords: Levy Processes, Brownian motion, Option pricing, …

Snowflakes Out Of Fire, Natasha. Minnerly Jan 2013

Snowflakes Out Of Fire, Natasha. Minnerly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In "On Fairy Stories" J.R.R. Tolkien writes that joy is the "mark of the true fairy- story." Tolkien believed that joy was the defining characteristic of the genre. This joy is not just apparent in the happy ending of the fairy tale, but also in the manner in which the plot and characters show theories of joy, and the way the text itself creates joy in the reader. This paper will explore Tolkien's creation of brightness, hope, and wonder, and how these instances express a theory of joy. First I will look at the different types of joy in Tolkien's …

Strength And Durability Of Fly Ash-Based Fiber-Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete In A Simulated Marine Environment, Rivera Francisco Javier Martinez Jan 2013

Strength And Durability Of Fly Ash-Based Fiber-Reinforced Geopolymer Concrete In A Simulated Marine Environment, Rivera Francisco Javier Martinez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This research is aimed at investigating the corrosion durability of polyolefin fiber-reinforced fly ash-based geopolymer structural concrete (hereafter referred to as GPC, in contradistinction to unreinforced geopolymer concrete referred to as simply geopolymer concrete), where cement is completely replaced by fly ash, that is activated by alkalis, sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate. The durability in a marine environment is tested through an electrochemical method for accelerated corrosion. The GPC achieved compressive strengths in excess of 6,000 psi. Fiber reinforced beams contained polyolefin fibers in the amounts of 0.1%, 0.3%, and 0.5% by volume. After being subjected to corrosion damage, the …

Sinfonâia En Rojo, Olmo Lâopez Itxaso Del Jan 2013

Sinfonâia En Rojo, Olmo Lâopez Itxaso Del

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis aims to rescue the name of Elisabeth Mulder, a Spanish female poet who started to publish her first poetry books around the rise of the Generation of 1927 in Spain. The importance of this work hinges on the recognition of Mulder as a female poet whose work has been marginalized from the literary canon, like that of many other women of her era. This thesis focuses on Mulde''s third poetry collection, Sinfonâia en rojo, which was published in 1929 and stands out for its symbolic richness and its romantic and modernist features. Part of this research deals with …

Tomorrow Is Yesterday, Robert James Leivers Jan 2013

Tomorrow Is Yesterday, Robert James Leivers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Protosciences, or new sciences trying to establish their legitimacy, are ubiquitous in literature. In the old stories we hear of alchemists who can only dream of the discoveries that modern chemists take for granted, and in the new stories we hear of travelers moving faster than light as our greatest physicists attempt to make that fantasy a reality. Limiting our viewpoint to the modern scientific reductionist view of the universe not only makes little sense if we consider Michael Polanyi's theories of emergence and 'personal knowledge', but it robs medieval scholars for the conceptual credit they are due for theories …

The Rise Of The Super Sidechicks: A Feminist Analysis Of Girls In Superhero Films, Dorothy Ashley Hendricks Jan 2013

The Rise Of The Super Sidechicks: A Feminist Analysis Of Girls In Superhero Films, Dorothy Ashley Hendricks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The superhero film genre has recently witnessed a reinvention of the girl sidekick. Instead of falling back on the perpetuated and well-known stereotypes of female heroines, recent offerings have allowed for several strong and innovative female characters to emerge. This close textual analysis of specific feminist examples from the films, Kick-Ass (2010), Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (2010), and X-Men: First Class (2012), examines young heroines as having feminist tendencies in a postfeminist moment. This analysis employs aspects of film theory, feminist theory, and also focuses on adaptation as a potentially powerful and problematic tenant of the films. Through this …

The Sui Generis In Charles G. Finney’S The Circus Of Dr. Lao, Adam J. White Jan 2013

The Sui Generis In Charles G. Finney’S The Circus Of Dr. Lao, Adam J. White

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Charles G. Finney’s 1936 novel The Circus of Dr. Lao was published to enthusiastic reviews, but fell into relative obscurity shortly thereafter. Since its publication, it has been the subject of one peer-reviewed critical essay, a number of reviews, one non-peer-reviewed essay, and a master’s thesis. It was published in a world where the fantastic and unique found only barren desert soil, with no scholarly tradition for the fantastic, nor a widely receptive lay audience for something truly unique, or sui generis. The concept of the sui generis, meaning “of its own kind,” provides a useful lens for examining the …

Uncounted Cadences, Jill. Lavetsky Jan 2013

Uncounted Cadences, Jill. Lavetsky

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Uncounted Cadences is a drawing installation in the thesis exhibition that furthers my exploration in tracing movement through psychological and physical geographies. Gestural drawings of human and animal bodies in motion are woven into local landscape imagery that is printed with powdered charcoal through a silkscreen. Using both additive and subtractive processes, the layering and erasure suggest loss, reclamation, and the nature of memory. The drawings are cut and provisionally reassembled into a cinematic sequence as if they are pieces of film being edited and spliced. This process shows an unfolding over time and involves listening to the rhythmic pacing …

Tramping: Alternatives To Traditional American Rites Of Passage, Anthony Vincent Saturno Jan 2013

Tramping: Alternatives To Traditional American Rites Of Passage, Anthony Vincent Saturno

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In America today, adolescent boys do not have a structured, ritualized or guided passage From boyhood into manhood. Many young men feel unsure of their manhood even at an age that signifies the transition. This causes young males to need a self--‐created rite of passage. Tramping, the act of travelling by train, hitchhiking or foot, is one way in which young males can independently achieve manhood. This is a literary account of the lives of Jack Kerouac, Chris McCandless, and Zebu Recchia. Their personal stories allow a detailed view of the advantages and disadvantages found in a self--‐created rite of …

Virtualization Techniques For Mobile Systems, David Jaramillo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In current mobile system environment there is a large gap in the use of smart phones for personal and enterprise use due to required enterprise security policies, privacy concerns as well as freedom of use. In the current environment, data-plans on mobile systems have become so wide spread that the rate of adaptation of data plans for every day customers has far outpaced the ability for enterprises to keep up with existing secure enterprise infrastructures. Most of the enterprises require/provide the access of emails and other official information on smart platforms which presents a big challenge for the enterprise in …

Using The Visual To "See" Absence, Nancy Carol Stein Jan 2013

Using The Visual To "See" Absence, Nancy Carol Stein

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Thessaloniki, a city with an Ottoman, Byzantine, and Sephardic past, is located in the Balkan area of Macedonia, in northern Greece. Its history is the story of people who have come from someplace else. For several hundred years, the majority population of the city was comprised of Spanish speaking Sephardic Jews who contributed to all aspects of the development of the city. This significant presence is no longer visible unless one specifically knows where to look for its traces. It is not a history that has been silenced or erased, but rather obliterated. In this dissertation, I present the documented …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This qualitative case study investigated the impact of sand tray on individuals diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Four participants successfully completed the creation of sand trays while the researcher observed, interviewed, and documented the individual sand trays. The intervention established that sand tray allows the dementia patient to kinesthetically connect to their inner cognitions through the intentional symbolic expression offered by this unique therapeutic medium. Using a series of eight sand trays of varying thematic concepts, the participants were offered a modality to facilitate a synthesization of their continued individuation, presenting a possible neural pathway to connect …

Visual And Electrosensory Ecology Of Batoid Elasmobranchs, Christine N. Bedore Jan 2013

Visual And Electrosensory Ecology Of Batoid Elasmobranchs, Christine N. Bedore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The electrosensory and visual adaptations of elasmobranchs to the environment have been more studied than most other senses, however, work on these senses is mostly limited to descriptive analyses of sensitivity, morphology, and behavior. The goal of this work was to explore electrosensory and visual capabilities in a more ecological context. To gain an understanding of the content of bioelectric signals, the magnitude and frequency of these stimuli were recorded from a broad survey of elasmobranch prey items... Color vision adaptations also correlated to the photic environment of each species; cownose rays inhabit turbid, green-dominated waters and had two cone …

Edith Wharton, Betty. Feuerberg Jan 2013

Edith Wharton, Betty. Feuerberg

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Edith Wharton uses characterization in the primary three characters in The Age of Innocence to explore the aspects of her life. Early adulthood is represented by May Welland Archer, who was born into New York 400, where society suppressed an individual's emotions, aspirations, and freedoms. The intermediate phase of her life is depicted in Newland Archer, who tests the confining limits of the society to which he belongs and strives to understand the role of emotions in achieving personal satisfaction. Wharton rejected and craved the ties of the New York 400 in the final phase of her life as portrayed …

Earnings Management Around Ipo Lockup Expiration And The Role Of Auditors, Lizhong. Hao Jan 2013

Earnings Management Around Ipo Lockup Expiration And The Role Of Auditors, Lizhong. Hao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

I examine the presence of earnings management at pre-IPO and lockup periods. Motivated by significant post-lockup insider sales documented in prior research, I investigate whether insiders (managers and venture capitalists) inflate earnings around the lockup period in order to increase share price and maximize personal wealth from selling shares at lockup expiration. I also compare levels of earnings management in the pre-IPO and lockup periods with those in the post-lockup period. Prior research also documents that auditor quality mitigates earnings management behavior. I explore the impact of auditor quality in the unique setting of IPO lockups. ... Cross-sectional analysis reveals …

Edward Gorey's Illustrations Of Misshapen Children, Kristin L. Mcglothlin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Twentieth century American illustrator Edward Gorey's pen and ink drawings subvert traditional images of children ; his images represent the tenets of disability theory, cuteness, and whiteness in relation to child figures in children's literature. Inspecting Gorey's illustrations provides insight into traditional images of children, and emphasizes how his portraits represent children as disabled figures. I examine four books containing Gorey's illustrations for literary and aesthetic analysis. In The Doubtful Guest, a boy deals with psychological challenges ; in The Beastly Baby and The Shrinking of Treehorn, both the infant and Treehorn live with disabled bodies; The Gashlycrumb Tinies displays …

Effects Of The Proactive Personality On The Levels Of Job Satisfaction And Burnout For Licensed Mental Health Counselors, Pamela F. Spina Jan 2013

Effects Of The Proactive Personality On The Levels Of Job Satisfaction And Burnout For Licensed Mental Health Counselors, Pamela F. Spina

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Personal wellness and burnout have been common themes in research studies regarding professional satisfaction and career success. Personality characteristics in relation to job and career success among professionals have also been included in countless studies. However, Bateman and Crant (1993) defined and began research on the specific construct of the proactive personality and how it related to personal achievement, satisfaction, and success among executives. This dissertation study is an extension of their research in that the relationship between proactive personality, job satisfaction and levels of burnout among Licensed Mental Health Counselors in Florida specifically, is being examined. While proactive personality …

Ecological Correlates Of The Abundance Of Juvenile Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) On Nearshore Reefs In Southeast Florida, Melanie Stadler Jan 2013

Ecological Correlates Of The Abundance Of Juvenile Green Sea Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) On Nearshore Reefs In Southeast Florida, Melanie Stadler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Juvenile green turtle (Chelonia mydas) abundance differs among nearshore reefs, but why some sites are preferred over others is unknown. My study had two objectives: to quantify differences in abundance over time (one year) and to determine what ecological factors were correlated with those differences. I conducted quarterly surveys on reefs in Palm Beach and Broward Counties and compared reef sites with respect to (i) water depth, (ii) algal abundance and composition, and (iii) changes in reef area (caused by sand covering) through time (11 years). Turtles were most abundant on shallow reefs exposed to high light levels that remained …

Effects Of Adolescent Stress On Depressive- And Anxiety-Like Behaviors And Hippocampal Mossy Fibre-Ca3 Remodeling In The Novelty-Seeking Phenotype, Ozge. Oztan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Experimentally naive rats show variance in their locomotor reactivity to novelty, some displaying higher (HR) while others displaying lower (LR) reactivity, associated with vulnerability to stress. LRHR phenotype is proposed as an antecedent to the development of stress hyper responsiveness. Results presented here show emergence of antidepressive-like behavior following peripubertal-juvenile exposure to chronic variable physical (CVP) and chronic variable social stress (CVS) in HR rats, and depressive-like behavior following CVP in the LRs. The antidepressive-like behavior in HR rats was accompanied by increased levels of acetylated Histone3 (acH3) and acetylated Histone4 (acH4) at the hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) P2 …

Effectiveness Of Modeling And Rehearsal To Teach Fire Safety Skills To Children With Autism, David Garcia Jan 2013

Effectiveness Of Modeling And Rehearsal To Teach Fire Safety Skills To Children With Autism, David Garcia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Autism is a disorder that affects children at an alarming rate. One out of every 88 children is diagnosed with autism in the United States. The disorder is characterized by communication, social, and behavioral deficits. Children with autism often require specialized teaching methods to learn basic skills that most children acquire without specialized instruction. Relatively few studies have examined strategies for teaching safety skills to individuals with autism. The current study utilized a multiple baseline across participants’ design to evaluate whether a modeling and rehearsal strategy is effective for teaching fire safety skills to children with autism between 4 and …

Early Environmental Adult Education: An Oral History Of Citizen Researchers' Learning In The Appalachian Land Ownership Study, 1979-1881, Keara Sodano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The Appalachian Land Ownership Study was a participatory action research project in one of our nation’s poorest regions suffering from absenteeism, poverty, powerlessness, and improper taxation. In discovering who owned the region’s land, the participants sought to organize against the social, economic and environmental injustices imposed on the Appalachian land and people. Most sociological and historical accounts of the Land Study focus on the process of participatory action research and the work of the project’s Task Force. However, over 50 citizen researchers also participated in the study. These citizen researchers encountered rich learning experiences as they struggled against scientific, corporate, …

Digital Assist, Carlotta A. Rody Jan 2013

Digital Assist, Carlotta A. Rody

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

High school biology classes traditionally follow a lecture format to disseminate content and new terminology. With the inclusive practices of No Child Left Behind, the Common Core State Standards, and end-of-course exam requirement for high school diplomas, classes include a large range of achievement levels and abilities. Teachers assume, often incorrectly, that students come to class prepared to listen and take notes. In a standard diploma, high school biology class in a separate school for students with emotional and behavioral disorders, five students participated in a single-subject, alternating treatment design study that compared the use of regular pens and digital …

The Dilemma Of The Language-Minority Stud, Maegan Ruiz Jan 2013

The Dilemma Of The Language-Minority Stud, Maegan Ruiz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

If we define language fluency as more than simply a way of speaking, but also a way of thinking, acting, and being, then we enter a conversation of language as ‘Discourse’ that was sparked by James Paul Gee. This conversation invokes discrete designations of Discourse as home-based, school-based, dominant, and non-dominant. These designations reveal divisions between Discourses that are believed to manifest themselves in the identity formation of ‘language-minority students:’ those whose home Discourse is non-dominant. The dominant Discourse that these students encounter in school generates two documented paths: Richard Hoggart’s scholarship boy and Herbert Kohl’s not-learner; both paths reflect …

The Hawksbill Rookery At Antigua, W.I.: Nest Success, Hatchling Behavior, And Hatchling Survival During Offshore Migration, Megan Reising

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The younger life history stages of marine turtles (eggs, hatchlings) often fail to survive. To compensate, sea turtles nest several times/season and produce large clutches of eggs. The hawksbill produces the largest clutches (150 eggs) and the smallest hatchlings of any marine turtle. My study, done at Jumby Bay in Antigua, West Indies, was designed to determine whether they did so to compensate for loss in the nest, hatchling loss in the water, or both factors. I found that most of the eggs (79 %) survived to become hatchlings that left the nest and entered the sea. However, 88 % …
