Discovering Real-World Usage Scenarios For A Multimodal Math Search Interface, Keita Del Valle Wangari Dec 2013

Discovering Real-World Usage Scenarios For A Multimodal Math Search Interface, Keita Del Valle Wangari

Theses

To use math expressions in search, current search engines require knowing expression names or using a structure editor or string encoding (e.g., LaTeX) to enter expressions. This is unfortunate for people who are not math experts, as this can lead to an "intention gap" between the math query they wish to express, and what the interface will allow. min is a search interface that supports drawing expressions on a canvas using a mouse/touch, keyboard and images. We designed a user study to examine how the multimodal interface of min changes search behavior for mathematical non-experts, and discover real-world …

Digital Divide Déjà Vu: Examining Second-Level Digital Literacy, Lisa Nicole Barber

Theses

Since the advent of the Internet, the diffusion of computers has narrowed the gap between the digital "have" and "have-nots," however researchers have identified a new disparity beyond computer accessibility as a result of the growing dependence of information on the Internet. This study will explore people's differences in online skills among users in the city of Rochester, N.Y. Based on a quota sample and a survey computer tasks are administered to evaluate internet skills. Findings suggest that there are significant differences in the amount of time it took to complete each task, while differences in education level, sex, age, …

Methods: The fall intervention selected for the pilot is a 'Call don't fall' sign that will be placed in the patients' room and bathroom with the rationale of increasing patient and staff awareness via implementation of a visual reminder. The sign …

Rn-Bs Education: Facilitators And Barriers, Laura Marie Schwarz, Nancyruth Leibold Dec 2013

Rn-Bs Education: Facilitators And Barriers, Laura Marie Schwarz, Nancyruth Leibold

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Tuesday, November 19, 2013:

Purpose: A strong movement led by agencies invested in nursing and healthcare outcomes exists in the United States to increase the numbers of baccalaureate (BS) and higher degreed nurses and along with it a fervent advocacy for seamless academic progression. Outcomes are found to be more favorable with BS prepared RNs. Yet the current percent of associate degreed (AD) RNs who go on for BS and higher education is relatively low. What encourages some AD RNs to return for BS level education, while many more do not to return? This presentation aims to …

Purpose: Develop a culturally sensitive advance care planning (ACP) seminar for a community of Chinese Americans (CA). The aim of the study was to examine the relationship of a culturally sensitive ACP seminar and attitudes toward advance directives (AD) in CA. Background: Advance directives are documents that guide end-of-life (EOL) decisions when decision-making capacity is lost. Research about ADs is limited in minority populations. Chinese Americans represent the third largest immigrant group in the United States. Interventions to increase awareness and knowledge of ACP in CA are important in promoting quality EOL care. …

The Diversity Of Quantitative Trait Loci In Yeast Sporulation Efficiency, Kimberly Lorenz Dec 2013

The Diversity Of Quantitative Trait Loci In Yeast Sporulation Efficiency, Kimberly Lorenz

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

A complex trait is one that exhibits continuous phenotypic variation due to genetic variation in many quantitative trait genes: QTGs). The ultimate goal of genetics is to relate genotype to phenotype; in the case of complex traits this requires a better understanding of what types of genes harbor causal natural variation, and what form the variation takes. Here I describe two experiments using the model complex trait of sporulation efficiency in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, one to specifically investigate how small effects contribute to a quantitative trait and the other to determine whether certain types of genes are more likely …

Rethinking The 2000 Acrl Standards: Some Things To Consider, Carol C. Kuhlthau Dec 2013

Rethinking The 2000 Acrl Standards: Some Things To Consider, Carol C. Kuhlthau

Communications in Information Literacy

I propose three "rethinks" to consider in recasting the ACRL Standards for information literacy for the coming decades. First, rethink the concept of information need. Second, rethink the notion that information literacy is composed of a set of abilities for "extracting information." Third, rethink the holistic process of learning from a variety of sources of information that is central to information literacy. The necessity for these "rethinks" are grounded in my extensive studies of students' experience in the information search process that reveal an evolving, dynamic, holistic process incorporating a series of feelings (affective), thoughts (cognitive) and actions (physical) as …

Minding The Gaps: Exploring The Space Between Vision And Assessment In Information Literacy Work, Heidi L.M. Jacobs Dec 2013

Minding The Gaps: Exploring The Space Between Vision And Assessment In Information Literacy Work, Heidi L.M. Jacobs

Communications in Information Literacy

The current "ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standard Review Task Force" presents information literacy practitioners with an engaging intellectual endeavor: how might these standards be revised, rethought, re-envisioned? Regardless of what the review yields, the process is an excellent opportunity for us to think broadly and creatively about the Standards and to remember that they are not a fixed set of rules but a malleable and evolving document. Asking questions about the practical, pedagogical, and theoretical implications of the Standards and considering alternative approaches will yield engaging, fruitful, and necessary conversations not only about the teaching of information literacy but about …

The New Acrl Information Literacy Competency Standards: Revising Reception, Benjamin R. Harris Dec 2013

The New Acrl Information Literacy Competency Standards: Revising Reception, Benjamin R. Harris

Communications in Information Literacy

The publication of educational standards inspires a variety of responses---from wholesale acceptance and deployment to criticism and blame. The author of this paper contends that the revision of the ACRL's Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education must be accompanied by a critical, conscious, and conscientious reception by librarians and information literacy advocates.

Refreshing Information Literacy: Learning From Recent British Information Literacy Models, Justine Martin Dec 2013

Refreshing Information Literacy: Learning From Recent British Information Literacy Models, Justine Martin

Communications in Information Literacy

Models play an important role in helping practitioners implement and promote information literacy. Over time models can lose relevance with the advances in technology, society, and learning theory. Practitioners and scholars often call for adaptations or transformations of these frameworks to articulate the learning needs in information literacy development. This study analyzes four recently published models from the United Kingdom. The initial findings were presented in a report for an ACRL taskforce reviewing the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. This article presents complementary, yet distinct findings from the same dataset that focus on reoccurring themes for information literacy …

Transforming Education Through Reflection: Pedagogies In Action, Sara Horton-Deutsch

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Monday, November 18, 2013:

The challenges and opportunities in developing nurses for practice have never been greater. New quality and safety science, advances in knowledge and technology, increased patient involvement, market driven health care, and altered care settings where nurses practice mandate transformation in how we educate and prepare students for practice. A new vision for transforming education that prepares nurses with advanced knowledge, judgment, skills and ethical standards calls for teaching approaches that are strong in situated and experiential learning ( Benner et al, 2010). Educational strategies that engage students in deeper understanding of classroom material …

Addressing National Research Priorities In Improvement Science, Kathleen R. Stevens

Biennial Convention (CONV)

Session presented on: Tuesday, November 19, 2013:

Healthcare experts, administrators, researchers, and clinicians across multiple disciplines are developing and testing new strategies to improve the safety and quality of patient care; however, national capacity to study improvement falls well behind the need to discover 'what works'. The study of complex healthcare service delivery and microsystems requires new skills in research methods, new partnerships across academic and clinical traditions, and multi-site research approaches to account for scale-up and spread of tested strategies. This symposium explores nurse-led nationally-funded achievements toward national advancing improvement science. The underlying foundations of the design of the …

In response to the growing concern over patient safety, quality, and health care outcomes, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), created the role of the Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL). CNL practice involves team development, microsystem assessment, process development, treatment, and ongoing evaluation. Implementing the role at the microsystem level has resulted in role ambiguity, increased cost, and lack of quantifiable measures of influence. By strategizing how to integrate the role in practice, nursing utilized two CNLs in a different manner than what was recommended by the AACN white paper. The purpose …
