Finding Room For Everyone: Libraries Confront Social Exclusion, Jen Hoyer
Finding Room For Everyone: Libraries Confront Social Exclusion, Jen Hoyer
Publications and Research
Communities that are working to combat exclusion have greater potential for success if they enlist the support of public libraries, which are in many ways ideally situated to welcome marginalized populations and provide programs and services that combat social exclusion. This chapter explains how this adaptability in response to social problems fits with the mandate of public libraries; examines why and how libraries should confront social exclusion; and looks at the Atwater Library and Computer Centre (ALCC) in Westmount, Québec, as an illustration of how this has been successfully accomplished.

The Global Land Rush: Markets, Rights, And The Politics Of Food, Smita Narula
The Global Land Rush: Markets, Rights, And The Politics Of Food, Smita Narula
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
In the past five years, interest in purchasing and leasing agricultural land in developing countries has skyrocketed. This trend, which was facilitated by the 2008 food crisis, is led by state and private investors, both domestic and foreign. Investors are responding to a variety of global forces: Some are securing their own food supply, while others are capitalizing on land as an increasingly promising source of financial returns. Proponents argue that these investments can support economic development in host states while boosting global food production. But critics charge that these “land grabs” disregard land users' rights and further marginalize already …

Therapeutic Ultrasound: The Effectiveness Of Ultrasound And The Importance Of Parameter Settings, Marika Londeen
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Therapeutic ultrasound can be an important modality for clinician's use to heat tissue. Previous research has concluded that therapeutic ultrasound treatments may be ineffective. There are several options for parameters depending on type of treatment and desired goal. The purpose of this study was to determine if specific parameters for a specific desired treatment goal were correct. The parameters included 1.0 and 3.0 megahertz frequencies of continuous ultrasound treatment on 20 subjects. Tissue temperature was measured with thermocouples in the calf. Data analysis consisted of running a one way repeated measures ANOVA to compare sample means as well as running …
Plasma And Electrolyte Changes In Humans Following Ingestion Of Multiple Boluses Of Pickle Juice Associated With Exercise, Michael Anthony Mckenney
Plasma And Electrolyte Changes In Humans Following Ingestion Of Multiple Boluses Of Pickle Juice Associated With Exercise, Michael Anthony Mckenney
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
No experimental research has examined the effect of drinking multiple boluses of pickle juice (PJ) on the same day, nor has its ingestion been examined during exercise. Additionally there are fears that PJ supplementation can cause hyperkalemia. We determined the effect of ingesting single or multiple boluses of PJ on plasma variables before, during, and after exercise. On three days, subjects ingested 0, 1, or 2 boluses of PJ and biked vigorously for 60 minutes. Blood samples were collected pre-ingestion and 30, 65, 95, and 125 minutes post ingestion. The number of PJ boluses consumed did not affect [Na+]p, [K+]p, …

Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
Athletes, coaches, and strength and conditioning practitioners are constantly searching for new and improved speed training methods give themselves or their athletes an edge over their competition. Overspeed training is not a new technique of speed training; however changes and developments over the past decade have created many new methods to train at supramaximal speed. Choosing the appropriate method or methods of overspeed training is important for the training to have the desired performance improvements. High speed running and skating treadmills, tow-assisted running and skating, as well as downhill running are some of the most common methods of overspeed training. …
A Deeper Understanding Of Female Athlete Body Image, Jeney Anne Christensen
A Deeper Understanding Of Female Athlete Body Image, Jeney Anne Christensen
Health Nutrition and Exercise Science
The purpose of this paper is to gain a better understanding of how body image can impact the self-esteem and confidence of female athletes. As the media and public image of professional female athletes becomes increasingly more sexualized, the pressure continues to rise for youth and collegiate female athletes to not only to excel at the sports they participate in, but also be what society deems attractive. These demands lead to harmful behaviors such as disordered eating, over-exercising, and certain drug abuse which, in turn, can result in serious health issues or even death. Continuous study and exploration of female …
Petroleum Exploration History In North Dakota To 1951, Clarence Anthony Herz
Petroleum Exploration History In North Dakota To 1951, Clarence Anthony Herz
History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies
The delayed discovery of oil in North Dakota resulted from remoteness, environment, and economic disadvantage, three of the six themes of Elwyn B. Robinson. Initially, lacking outside capital, the local explorers turned to their communities from 1917 to 1935 to raise the capital necessary to search for oil. As a result a complex group united to raise the capital necessary, but did not discover oil. The Great Depression ushered in the era of outside capital from 1937 to the successful discovery of oil on April 4, 1951. During this entire exploration period the state legislature, restricted by a lack of …

West Virginia Physical Education Teacher Perceptions Of State Mandated Fitnessgram® Testing And Application Of Results, William M. Miller
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background/Purpose: In response to concerns with increasing rates of childhood obesity, many states have enacted policies that affect physical education. A commonly used approach is state mandated fitness test administration in school-based settings. While this approach is widely debated throughout the literature, one area that lacks research is teachers attitudes toward this fitness testing and the application of results in their professional practice. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of West Virginia physical education teachers toward the mandated use of the FITNESSGRAM® and to gain a better understanding of how the resultant data are employed to …
Strengths And Limitations Of Qualitative Approaches To Research In Occupational Health Psychology, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Joseph J. Mazzola
Strengths And Limitations Of Qualitative Approaches To Research In Occupational Health Psychology, Irvin Sam Schonfeld, Joseph J. Mazzola
Publications and Research
Like all research methods, qualitative methods have strengths and limitations. This chapter describes seven strengths and five limitations. With an understanding of their strengths and limitations and how to minimize and/or balance them, occupational health psychology (OHP) researchers can benefit from qualitative methods. It is important to understand that qualitative findings do not establish generalizable cause-effect relations. However, qualitative methods can help an OHP researcher develop a theory of causality and derive hypotheses related to the theory and, thus, motivate quantitatively organized research designed to test the hypotheses. The challenge for the OHP researcher is to be mindful of what …
Queering The Catalog: Queer Theory And The Politics Of Correction, Emily Drabinski
Queering The Catalog: Queer Theory And The Politics Of Correction, Emily Drabinski
Publications and Research
Critiques of hegemonic library classification structures and controlled vocabularies have a rich history in information studies. This project has pointed out the trouble with classification and cataloging decisions that are framed as objective and neutral but are always ideological and worked to correct bias in library structures. Viewing knowledge organization systems from a queer perspective, however, challenges the idea that classification and subject language can ever be finally corrected. Engaging queer theory and library classification and cataloging together requires new ways of thinking about how to be ethically and politically engaged on behalf of marginal knowledge formations and identities who …

None But The Bravest Of Men: Violence And Popular Sovereignty In Revolutionary War Veteran Narratives., James M. Greene
None But The Bravest Of Men: Violence And Popular Sovereignty In Revolutionary War Veteran Narratives., James M. Greene
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Starting with Ethan Allen's 1778 captivity narrative, the Revolutionary War veteran narrative became a small, but popular, subgenre of early American life writing. In this project, I argue that the genre encouraged a myth of the republican citizen-soldier in the early United States that supported the delegation of popular sovereignty toward the institutional management of a strong central government. As a synecdoche for a continental body politic, the Revolutionary veteran appeared as both the source of sovereignty as a citizen and an agent of this authority as a soldier. The genre has typically been understood as one that appeals for …

Where Are We Now And Where Should We Head For? A Reflection On The Place Of East Asia On The Map Of Socio-Legal Studies, Setsuo Miyazawa
Faculty Scholarship
Collaborative Research Networks ("CRNs") developed to encourage and facilitate and collaboration between scholars with shared academic interests. CRN33 (East Asia) is fairly new. This article, which is based on a speech given by the author, examines the status of East Asia in socioeconomic literature, explores the growing prevalence of East Asia as a topic in general theory-building in socio-legal studies, and suggests methods for placing East Asia in a more central position for future socio-legal scholarship. The author emphasizes that scholars in the field of East Asian legal studies should work harder to introduce those outside the field to the …
Ineffective Assistance Of Library: The Failings And The Future Of Prison Law Libraries, Jonathan Abel
Ineffective Assistance Of Library: The Failings And The Future Of Prison Law Libraries, Jonathan Abel
Faculty Scholarship
The prison law library has long been a potent symbol of the inmate's right to access the courts. But it has never been a practical tool for providing that access. This contradiction lies at the core of the law library doctrine. It takes little imagination to see the problem with requiring untrained inmates, many of them illiterate or non-English speakers, to navigate the world of postconviction relief and civil rights litigation with nothing more than the help of a few library books. Yet law libraries are ubiquitous in American prisons. Now, in light of a technological revolution in legal research …

Normal Mysticism : An Interdisciplinary Study Of Max Kudushin's Rabbinic Hermeneutic, Thomas L. Head
Normal Mysticism : An Interdisciplinary Study Of Max Kudushin's Rabbinic Hermeneutic, Thomas L. Head
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Max Kadushin (1895-1980) was a rabbi, professor, and preeminent figure in the history of American Conservative Jewish rabbinic thought. His hermeneutic system, which centers on the idea of organic religious value-concepts, has had a significant influence on the emerging Textual Reasoning movement.
In chapter one, I describe the intellectual climate in which Kadushin's system took shape—providing a short history of the 19th-century reform and haskalah movements, discussing the general outline of Alfred North Whitehead's process philosophy tradition, and placing new focus on the tension between Conservative Judaism and Mordecai Kaplan's emerging philosophy of Reconstructionism as a critical factor in the …

Preschool Children's Information Processing And Emotional Behavior In Social Conflict Situations, Po Lin B.L. Bailey
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This study investigated various aspects of the Social Information Processing Model, in particular, young children’s emotional behavior regulation and negative emotionality, in Hong Kong. The sample was N=628 from 12 schools. Using Rasch measurement, linear unidimensional scales were constructed for Emotion and Behaviour Regulation (10 items) and for Negative Emotionality (10 items). The well-known Short Temperament Scale was Rasch analyzed too, but a linear scale could not be created – it had initially been designed under the True Score Test theory paradigm. The children were divided into Type A (high on negative emotionality and low on emotion and behavior regulation, …
An Integrated Computer-Aided Modular Fixture Design System For Machining Semi-Circular Parts, Uday H. Farhan
An Integrated Computer-Aided Modular Fixture Design System For Machining Semi-Circular Parts, Uday H. Farhan
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Productivity is one of the most important factors in manufacturing processes because of the high level of market competition. In this regard, modular fixtures (MFs) play an important role in practically improving productivity in flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) due to this technology using highly productive computer numerical control (CNC) machines. MFs consist of devices called jigs and fixtures for accurately holding the workpiece during different machining operations. The design process is complex, and traditional methods of MF design were not sufficiently productive.
Computer-aided design (CAD) software has rapidly improved as a result of the development of computer technology, and has …
