Measuring Visual Literacy Ability In Graduate Level Pre-Service Teachers, Teresa Farrell
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Farrell, Teresa, Ed.D., August 2013 Curriculum and Instruction Measuring Visual Literacy Ability in Graduate Level Pre-service Teachers Chairperson: Dr. Marian J. McKenna The field of visual literacy has been active since its inception in 1969 by John Debes and members of various fields of study such as science, mathematics, psychology, education, and the arts forming the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA). Recognizing that modern society is increasingly visual by nature, and with the advances in digital technologies, visual literacy is becoming an area of critical importance in education. Although much work has been done within the field to define it …

Over 25% of adults in the US are obese, contributing to 300,000 deaths and costing the US healthcare system $147 billion annually. Federal governments to local non-profit agencies have instituted policy and built environment (BE) changes in effort to reduce obesity and increase physical activity (PA). A challenge in evaluating the success of policy and BE change is the capacity to capture a priori PA behaviors and the ability to eliminate researcher and respondent bias in assessing post-change environments. A novel transdisciplinary collaboration between public health and computer science is presented here with the goal of automatically analyzing existing public …

Brown School Faculty Publications
Objectives: There is a growing literature indicating that organizational and individual worker-level factors affect decisions about whether or not empirically-supported treatments (EST’s) are adopted within health care agencies. The purpose of this pilot study is to further investigate and measure worker’s attitudes within a community organization. Methods: A small organization participated in the study due to their diversity in services offered. Of the 92 workers eligible for participation in the study, 66 (72%) completed the Evidence-Based Practice Attitude Scale (EBPAS) survey. Results: Multivariate analyses revealed that female workers scored higher on both Openness and total score; workers with nursing, education …

Is Openness To Using Empirically Supported Treatments Related To Organizational Culture And Climate?, David A. Patterson Silver Wolf (Adelv Unegv Waya) Phd, Catherine N. Dulmus Phd, Eugene Maguin Phd
Brown School Faculty Publications
An established literature indicates that organizational factors such as culture and climate can impede the implementation of empirically supported treatments (ESTs) in real world practice. What remains unclear is whether certain worker attitudes create barriers to implementing ESTs and how these attitudes might impact the working culture and climate within an organization. The overall purpose of this study is to investigate workers’ openness towards implementing a new EST and whether the workers’ openness scores relate to their workplace culture and climate scores. Participants in this study (N=1273) worked in a total of 55 different programs in a large child and …

This study examined the prevalence of mental distress among groups in Afghanistan considered to be at risk. Data were drawn from a representative cross-sectional disability survey carried out in Afghanistan including 5,130 households in 171 clusters throughout the 34 provinces of the country. The sample included 838 non-disabled control participants aged above 14, and 675 disabled participants. Results showed that various vulnerable groups (disabled people, the unemployed, the elderly, minority ethnic groups, as well as widowed, divorced or separated women) were at higher risk of experiencing mild to severe mental health problems. The adjusted odds ratio for war-related disability compared …

Darfur is currently in a very complex situation making humanitarian intervention a very challenging endeavour. The civilian population is caught in the middle of armed confrontation resulting in massive forced displacement as well as in food shortage, lack of access to safe source of water and sanitation facilities, shelter, essential health services. Children are particularly vulnerable in conflict situation as they are higher risk of physical and sexual violence or emotional abuse. Applying the Alkire and Foster index of multidimensional poverty to a selected set of dimensions of deprivation identified through a large scale household survey in Western Darfur carried …

Gender, Difference And Urban Change: Implications For Promotion Of Well-Being?, Julian Walker, Alexandre A. Frediani, Jean-Francois Trani
Brown School Faculty Publications
This article examines the impacts of urban change on the well-being of women and men, and girls and boys, living in cities, and explores how gender intersects with other social relations to differentiate these impacts. It then considers the implications of intersectionality for organisations aiming to promote the interests of specific social groups (such as women, or people with disabilities) vis-a-vis urban change by looking at the experience of Leonard Cheshire’s Asha project, working with girls and boys with disabilities in Mumbai. It concludes that organisations working to promote the interest of identity based constituents should (a) base their strategies …

What, I Shouldn’T Have Done That?: The Influence Of Training And Just-In-Time Reminders On Secure Behavior, Jeffrey L. Jenkins, Alexandra Durcikova
Faculty Publications
Organizations often implement Security Education, Training, and Awareness (SETA) programs to help improve secure behavior. SETA programs can be multifaceted; however, organizations often take a “one-size-fits-all” approach to improve security, without understanding how different SETA components influence behavior. In this research, we explain how two common SETA program components—online training and reminders—influence behavior through discrete theoretical mechanisms. First, we hypothesize that online training influences behavior through improving beliefs and intentions. However, because of dual-task interference, the relationship between beliefs and intentions may be hindered. We then explain how just-in-time reminders can help overcome dual-task interference and influence behavior directly. We …

Disrupting Methamphetamine Associated Memory By Targeting Synaptic Dynamics, Zachary Zigmond
Disrupting Methamphetamine Associated Memory By Targeting Synaptic Dynamics, Zachary Zigmond
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Methamphetamine (METH) is addictive and associated with a high rate of relapse. One relapse trigger is re-experiencing drug-associated contextual associations. Therefore it is possible that, by targeting METH-associated contextual memories, drug seeking behavior can be inhibited. Recent evidence has suggested that memory formation relies on actin polymerization, which allows dendritic spines to undergo structural and functional plasticity, key components of memory. To see if actin polymerization could be a target for the extinction of METH seeking memories we inhibited actin polymerization in animals that had been trained in either METH or food associated conditioned place preference. Pretest inhibition of actin …
You’Ve Got To Keep ‘Em Separated: Characterizing Lagging Chromosome Prevention In Oral Cancer Cells, Rosa Nathalie Beltran
You’Ve Got To Keep ‘Em Separated: Characterizing Lagging Chromosome Prevention In Oral Cancer Cells, Rosa Nathalie Beltran
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Mitosis is the separation of duplicated chromosomes into two daughter cells in order to create viable offspring. There are many checks in mitosis to ensure the inherited chromosome number is correct. Sometimes, these checkpoints are overcome and daughter cells inherit defects which can lead to cancer. One defect is the appearance of lagging chromosomes, the result of inaccurate chromosomal separation which leads to incorrect chromosome number termed aneuploidy. Aneuploidy is one of the defining traits of cancerous cells. The potential mechanism of lagging chromosomes in the cancerous cell line UPCI:OSCC070 is investigated in this study. siRNA-induced knockdown of KIFC1, a …

Some Like It Hot: The Isolation Of An Aconitase Mutant Resistant To Heat Shock-Induced Oxidative Stress, Imarhia Enogieru
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Aconitase is a multifunctional enzyme essential for mitochondrial DNA maintenance and cellular respiration. For my thesis, I used an error prone PCR mutagenesis method to mutate the yeast aconitase (ACO1) gene and created a mutant library of Sacchromyces cerevisiae yeast cells. The library underwent 50oC heat shocks to select for cells expressing an aconitase mutant that increased the cells’ resistance to heat shock-induced oxidative stress. Oxidative stress has been implicated as a theory of cellular aging. Isolated aconitase mutants with increased oxidative stress resistance will be assayed for increased lifespan, which would support the free radical theory of aging and …
From Snow White To Brave: The Evolution Of The Disney Princess, Jaquelyn Guizerix
From Snow White To Brave: The Evolution Of The Disney Princess, Jaquelyn Guizerix
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
This paper traces the evolution of the Disney Princess and critically evaluates the role of the Disney Princess icon in American history using a feminist perspective. The term Disney Princess refers to Disney’s ten animated female heroines who were either born royal or marry princes before the end of the film; collectively these princesses became iconic through the creation of the enormous Disney Princess marketing franchise in 2001. Since Snow White in 1937 and culminating with the 2012 film Brave, the Disney Princesses have undergone subtle developments in appearance, attitude, relationships, and cultural heritage that have expanded the function of …

Impact Of Reduction Mowing On Fire Ants (Hymenoptera: Formiciade) At Gopher Tortoise (Testudines: Testudinidae) Burrows, Richard Jones
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Many species prey upon the threatened gopher tortoises, including the Red Imported Fir Ants Solenopsis invicta. While human alterations to native habitat have led to a decline in gopher tortoises, “disturbance specialists” like S. invicta often thrive on such changes. This study examines three ant surveys at gopher tortoise burrows within a section of residential “greenway” in southeastern Florida before and after “reduction mowing”. While the presence of S. invicta did decrease aftrer the reduction mowing, the numbers of native ants and ant species richness in general showed a significant decline. Another invasive ant, the Little Fire Ant, Wasmannia auropunctata …
Right Mindfulness Leads To Right Livelihood: Exploring The Connections Between Mindfulness, Stress, Religiosity, And Personality, Morgan Levy
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Mindfulness refers to the ability to think in the present moment and to be cognizant of one's own thoughts and physical state. We examined whether openness to experience and religiosity affected the experience of mindfulness. Undergraduate college students underwent a 55-minute session learning about mindfulness techniques and various meditations such as body relaxation meditation, a nature meditation, and a guided imagery meditation. After completing the session, participants completed post-treatment questionnaires and one week later they completed follow-up questionnaires. Participants showed an increase in mindfulness immediately following the session and one week later. They also experienced a decrease in stress one …
The Comparison Of Two Undescribed Species Of Skates, Bathyraja Sp. 2 And Bathyraja Sp (C.F. Eatonii) From The Antarctic Waters Of The South Orkney Islands, Heather Kalisz
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Skates of the genus Bathyraja belong to the subfamily Arhynchobatinae in the family Rajidae. This family is comprised currently of 228 recognized species and about 50 unnamed species (McEachran and Dunn, 1998). Some authors elevate the Arhynchobatidae to the rank of family (Nelson, 2006). Two unnamed species of skates Bathyraja sp. 2 and Bahtyraja cf. eatonii were examined and measured in the preparation of formally describing these species. A total of 20 preserved specimens of Bathyraja sp. 2 and a total of 4 preserved specimens of Bathyraja cf. eatonii, collected during the 2008- 2009 AMLR survey cruise of the South …
Modeling Embryonic Tubulogenesis With Polarized Particles, Lucas Ortiz
Modeling Embryonic Tubulogenesis With Polarized Particles, Lucas Ortiz
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Epithelial morphogenesis is driven by the formation, growth, and bending of thin sheets of cells with distinct interior (apical) and exterior (basal) sides. In this study we attempted to improve on past particle-based cell models to form a model of morphogenesis based on a two-particle polarized cell structure. We began by modeling a stable cyst-like structure. We then tested and calibrated the viscoelastic properties of our model by compressing the cell structure between two plates, which is comparable to real world data collected by Forgacs et al. (1998). We also simulated the growth of a hollow sphere into a tube-like …

"Death Is Nothing In Comparison To Dishonor": Sarah Morgan’S Diary And Women’S Roles In Southern Honor, Brooke Radaker
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
In their studies of the code of honor in the Old South, historians such as Bertram Wyatt-Brown and Edward L. Ayers consider women incapable of possessing honor. However, the diary of Sarah Morgan, a young woman living in Baton Rouge and New Orleans during the Civil War, reveals the many ways that women actively engaged in the code of honor and even considered themselves to be honorable. In her diary, Sarah Morgan described her own reverence for any honorable gentleman and the ways in which women like her preached the ideologies of the code of honor to men. Women reinforced …
Keep It Together: Knockdowns Of Dynactin Subunits Demonstrate Varying Levels Of Importance In Dynactin Structure And Microtubule Organization, Christina Turn
Keep It Together: Knockdowns Of Dynactin Subunits Demonstrate Varying Levels Of Importance In Dynactin Structure And Microtubule Organization, Christina Turn
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
Dynactin, a multisubunit protein complex, serves as a processivity factor and cargo adaptor for the microtubule motor cytoplasmic dynein. Together, these proteins permit mitotic progression, intracellular trafficking, and endomembrane organization. Dynactin also independently anchors microtubules at the centrosome during interphase. In this study, we use shRNAs to knock down expression of the p24, p27, p62, and Arp1 subunits of dynactin to determine those components’ roles in anchoring. Recent work has shown p62’s importance to dynactin integrity (Yeh et al., 2012), and we confirm that its loss disrupts microtubule organization. The peripheral p27 and binding partner p25 seem to contribute to …
Reparations And Reconciliation: Negotiating Claims Of Historical Injustice In The Case Of The Herero Genocide, Leslie Williams
Reparations And Reconciliation: Negotiating Claims Of Historical Injustice In The Case Of The Herero Genocide, Leslie Williams
Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019
To date, Germany has denied any obligation to financial compensation for the Herero genocide of 1904-1907. The Herero began petitioning in 1995 and haven’t yet seen results. The reconciliation process has been slowed by German denial and Namibian politics alike. Germany maintains that genocide was not technically illegal until the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in 1948, an argument that contradicts the hundreds of millions of dollars they continue to pay to Jewish victims as restitution for WWII. Historians argue that there are extensive links between German colonialism and the Jewish Holocaust. German concentration …

The Failed Promise Of Language Rights: A Critique Of The International Language Rights Regime, Moria Paz
Faculty Scholarship
Major international legal instruments commit international law to protect language rights absolutely, irrespective of counter-pressures toward linguistic uniformity. This unconditional commitment to language rights is echoed in the writings of prominent human rights scholars, who argue that language is a constitutive element of cultural identity. This article contrasts the ideals of language rights with the actual record of their enforcement. It presents a detailed analysis of the 133 cases that have come before the European Court of Human Rights, the U.N. Human Rights Committee, and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights dealing with language issues as they arise in (i) …

International Students’ Perspective On Employability: A Missing Voice, Rong Huang, Rebecca Turner
Plymouth Business School
Huang (2008) argues that previous research in relation to international students is limited in its scope, concentrating on areas such as the country of origin, or, the academic or social experience. As the emphasis is now more on the contribution international students’ fees make to the prestige and income of individual universities, it is surprising to note that there is limited research on the progression and achievement of international students following their graduation and their subsequent careers and motilities (Leonard and Morley, 2003). The employability of university graduates has dominated much educational and economic policy over the past decade (Cranmer, …
