Scholarly Teaching: Suggestions For A Road More Traveled, Todd D. Zakrajsek Jan 2013

Scholarly Teaching: Suggestions For A Road More Traveled, Todd D. Zakrajsek

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Excerpt: Most academic disciplines throughout the world have been in the higher education curriculum for hundreds, and in some cases thousands, of years. Teaching itself has certainly been around as long as the earliest of any given discipline. After all, without teaching no profession is possible. How else would a core set of knowledge be taught to those interested in the theoretical constructs, conceptual frameworks, and the successes/failures of those who have worked previously in the discipline? Unfortunately, the concept of consistently teaching from a base of scholarly activity is relatively new. What happens, then, when the very concept …

Instructor Presence In Online Courses And Student Satisfaction, Richard K. Ladyshewsky Jan 2013

Instructor Presence In Online Courses And Student Satisfaction, Richard K. Ladyshewsky

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

This case study explores the role of the online instructor and how they influence student satisfaction. While there has been a substantial body of literature on what impacts on student satisfaction when students study online, there is far less literature focussing on how the instructor mediates this satisfaction, in particular satisfaction related to quality of feedback and teaching. This case study addresses this gap by exploring the performance of two instructors across six fully online courses in a post graduate managerial leadership course. Course evaluation data (quantitative and qualitative) frequency and content of instructor postings, and social network maps were …

Molecular Dynamics Of Ionic Liquids In Nanoporous Electrodes, Nav Nidhi Rajput Jan 2013

Molecular Dynamics Of Ionic Liquids In Nanoporous Electrodes, Nav Nidhi Rajput

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate structural, dynamical and electrical properties of ionic liquids (ILs) confined inside different nanoporous materials. These systems have potential uses in environmental and energy applications. The main goal is to understand how these IL properties are affected by a) characteristics of nanoporous materials such as chemical nature of the pore walls (e.g., carbon, titania), pore size and pore morphology, and b) characteristics of electrolyte, such as amount of IL inside the pores (pore loading) and concentration of organic solvent, in the case of mixtures of ILs with organic solvents. The results obtained in this …

Environmental Impact On Direct Neuronal Reprogramming In Vivo In The Adult Brain, Andrew Grande, Kyoko Sumiyoshi, Alejandro Lopez-Juarez, Jennifer Howard, Bhuvaneswari Sakthivel, Bruce Aronow, Kenneth Campbell Jan 2013

Environmental Impact On Direct Neuronal Reprogramming In Vivo In The Adult Brain, Andrew Grande, Kyoko Sumiyoshi, Alejandro Lopez-Juarez, Jennifer Howard, Bhuvaneswari Sakthivel, Bruce Aronow, Kenneth Campbell

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Direct reprogramming of non-neuronal cells to generate new neurons is a promising approach to repair damaged brains. Impact of the in vivo environment on neuronal reprogramming, however, is poorly understood. Here we show that regional differences and injury conditions have significant influence on the efficacy of reprogramming and subsequent survival of newly generated neurons in the adult rodent brain. A combination of local exposure to growth factors and retrovirus-mediated overexpression of the neurogenic transcription factor Neurogenin2 (Neurog2) can induce new neurons from non-neuronal cells in the adult neocortex and striatum where neuronal turnover is otherwise very limited. These two regions …

Technology Argument Frames : Examining The Impact Of Argumentation On The Development Of A Health Information Exchange Initiative, David Murithi Murungi Jan 2013

Technology Argument Frames : Examining The Impact Of Argumentation On The Development Of A Health Information Exchange Initiative, David Murithi Murungi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation applies the Technology Frames of Reference (TFR) theoretical lens to examine the implementation of a health information exchange (HIE) initiative in southeast USA. It extends the TFR lens by developing Toulminian argument maps to depict frame structure and employing the argument theories of Toulmin, Habermas and Perelman Olbrechts-Tyteca to help analyze the role that argumentation plays in the emergence and development of the technology frames that characterized this HIE endeavor. The argument maps developed in this dissertation helped to assess the level of argumentation within frames and to compare argumentation across frame domains. The argument maps were also …

Evaluation Of Gas-Assisted Gravity Drainage Eor Process Applicability In A Louisiana Oil Field Through Experiments And Reservoir Simulation, Wagirin Ruiz Paidin Jan 2013

Evaluation Of Gas-Assisted Gravity Drainage Eor Process Applicability In A Louisiana Oil Field Through Experiments And Reservoir Simulation, Wagirin Ruiz Paidin

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Gas-Assisted Gravity Drainage (GAGD) process was developed as an alternative to conventional gas injection enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes, which suffer from their inherent weakness of combating gravity segregation. The GAGD process, however, is aimed at taking advantage of this phenomenon and consists of using horizontal producers near the bottom of the payzone while injecting gas using vertical injection wells. It is hypothesized that the injected gas will rise to the top, thereby forming a gas cap while displacing reservoir brine/oil downward towards the producers. In this study, a single-well alternative to the multi-well GAGD process was investigated to …

Metal-Based Microchannel Heat Exchangers : Manufacturing And Heat Transfer Testing, Bin Lu Jan 2013

Metal-Based Microchannel Heat Exchangers : Manufacturing And Heat Transfer Testing, Bin Lu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on improving the functionality of metal-based microchannel heat exchangers (MHEs), as well as pushing this technology toward real-world applications. Design optimization was carried out on MHEs for performance maximization. Double-layered microchannel layout was experimentally studied, and a significant reduction on liquid flow pressure drop penalty was achieved. Other than water, another commonly-used coolant, ethylene glycol, was applied to MHEs, and flow and heat transfer characteristics were quantified. Transient Liquid Phase (TLP) bonding was used for joining Cu structures. For further understanding of the MHE heat transfer, a detailed examination was carried out on the TLP bonding interface …

Climate Change Geoengineering: Philosophical Perspectives, Legal Issues, And Governance Frameworks, William C. G. Burns, Andrew L. Strauss Jan 2013

Climate Change Geoengineering: Philosophical Perspectives, Legal Issues, And Governance Frameworks, William C. G. Burns, Andrew L. Strauss

School of Law Faculty Publications

The international community is not taking the action necessary to avert dangerous increases in greenhouse gases. Facing a potentially bleak future, the question that confronts humanity is whether the best of bad alternatives may be to counter global warming through human-engineered climate interventions. In this book, eleven prominent authorities on climate change consider the legal, policy, and philosophical issues presented by geoengineering. The book asks: When, if ever, are decisions to embark on potentially risky climate modification projects justified? If such decisions can be justified, in a world without a central governing authority, who should authorize such projects and by …

“A Sufficient Number": The Historic African American Community Of Peterborough In Warren, Maine, Kate E. Mcmahon Ma

All Student Scholarship

Warren, Maine is located in the midcoast region of southeastern Maine. The small town has a long history that is intrinsically linked to the maritime activities of the region, which began in the mid-seventeenth century. Sometime around 1782, Sarah Peters was brought to Warren as a slave on a ship owned by Captain James McIntyre. After slavery was outlawed in Massachusetts in 1783/1784, Sarah successfully sued for her freedom and married a man named Amos Peters. Together, they raised a large, mixed-racial family, and settled near South Pond, a good distance away from the main village. By the 1820s, they …

An Assessment Of Current Methodologies For Mitigating The Potential Effects Of Anthropogenic Underwater Sound On Marine Life, And Recommendations For Best Practice, Ross Craig Compton

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Underwater sound from anthropogenic sources such as seismic surveys, marine renewable device installations and naval exercises has the potential to disturb and cause injury to a variety of marine species. There is particular concern for the potential effects upon marine mammals, which utilise sound to communicate, hunt and navigate. Observed effects include behavioural changes and reduced sighting rates, with unknown consequences for individuals or populations over time. Potential effects on marine mammals include sound induced damage to auditory systems, altered diving behaviour potentially resulting in decompression sickness, stranding and death. The aim of the thesis was to develop a framework …

The Effects Of Environmental Conditions On Quorum Sensing And Community Interactions In Coral-Associated Bacteria, Emma Ransome Jan 2013

The Effects Of Environmental Conditions On Quorum Sensing And Community Interactions In Coral-Associated Bacteria, Emma Ransome

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The coral holobiont contains diverse communities of bacteria that play a role in the maintenance of coral ecosystems, however little is known about the structure and conservation of the host-bacterial relationship. Declines in coral ecosystems have been partly attributed to outbreaks of disease in tropical and sub-tropical regions, which have been linked to increasing temperatures. Bacteria are thought to play a role in some of these diseases, however little is understood about the mechanisms behind disease progression or the series of events involved in the shifts of coral-associated bacteria from conserved, potentially beneficial communities to those including potential pathogens. Investigations …

Elasmobranch Longline Capture: Ecological Application, Physiological Impacts And Alternative Techniques, Edward James Brooks Jan 2013

Elasmobranch Longline Capture: Ecological Application, Physiological Impacts And Alternative Techniques, Edward James Brooks

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Longline fishing is the most common elasmobranch capture method in the world, both for commercial fishing, and to a lesser extent for scientific surveys. The capture of an animal on a longline initiates a series of physiological responses designed to promote survivorship in the short term, but if unchecked, can cause reduced individual fitness and/or mortality in the long term. Given widespread declines in shark populations, an improved understanding of the physiological costs of longline capture is needed. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the physiological response of sharks to capture and restraint, to assess novel, non-invasive alternatives …

Harmonic Compensation In A Grid Using Doubly Fed Induction Generators, Omkar Amol Ghatpande Jan 2013

Harmonic Compensation In A Grid Using Doubly Fed Induction Generators, Omkar Amol Ghatpande

Masters Theses

"Ideally, electric utilities are expected to deliver a sinusoidal voltage with a constant rated frequency, while customers are expected to draw a sinusoidal current with unity power factor. The recent widespread use of harmonic producing equipment in industrial applications, especially non-linear loads, has increased the distortion of electric currents and voltages in transmission and distribution systems. This thesis proposes a method of using multiple reference frame theory for measuring and mitigating harmonic currents of nonlinear loads using a doubly fed induction generator. The most significant low-order harmonics to be compensated are calculated using a multiple reference frame harmonic observer. This …

Robustness Of Speech Quality Metrics To Background Noise And Network Degradations: Comparing Visqol, Pesq And Polqa, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte, Jan Skoglund, Anil Kokaram

Conference papers

The Virtual Speech Quality Objective Listener (ViSQOL) is a new objective speech quality model. It is a signal based full reference metric that uses a spectro-temporal measure of similarity between a reference and a test speech signal. ViSQOL aims to predict the overall quality of experience for the end listener whether the cause of speech quality degradation is due to ambient noise, or transmission channel degradations. This paper describes the algorithm and tests the model using two speech corpora: NOIZEUS and E4. The NOIZEUS corpus contains speech under a variety of background noise types, speech enhancement methods, and SNR levels. …

Detailed Comparative Analysis Of Pesq And Visqol Behaviour In The Context Of Playout Delay Adjustments Introduced By Voip Jitter Buffer Algorithms, Andrew Hines, Peter Pocta, Hugh Melvin Jan 2013

Detailed Comparative Analysis Of Pesq And Visqol Behaviour In The Context Of Playout Delay Adjustments Introduced By Voip Jitter Buffer Algorithms, Andrew Hines, Peter Pocta, Hugh Melvin

Conference papers

The default best-effort Internet presents significant challenges for delay-sensitive applications such as VoIP. To cope with non determinism, receiver playout strategies are utilised in VoIP applications that adapt to network condition. Such strategies can be divided into two different groups, namely per-talkspurt and per-packet. The former make use of silence periods within natural speech and adapt such silences to track network conditions, thus preserving the integrity of active speech talkspurts. Examples of this approach are described in [1, 2]. Per packet strategies are different in that adjustments are made both during silence periods and during talkspurts by time-scaling of packets, …

Monitoring The Effects Of Temporal Clipping On Voip Speech Quality, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte, Jan Skoglund, Anil Kokaram Jan 2013

Monitoring The Effects Of Temporal Clipping On Voip Speech Quality, Andrew Hines, Naomi Harte, Jan Skoglund, Anil Kokaram

Conference papers

This paper presents work on a real-time temporal clipping monitoring tool for VoIP. Temporal clipping can occur as a result of voice activity detection (VAD) or echo cancellation where comfort noise in used in place of clipped speech segments. The algorithm presented will form part of a no-reference objective model for quantifying perceived speech quality in VoIP. The overall approach uses a modular design that will help pinpoint the reason for degradations in addition to quantifying their impact on speech quality. The new algorithm was tested for VAD compared over a range of thresholds and varied speech frame sizes. The …

A Large Scale Network Model To Obtain Interwell Formation Characteristics, Seyedmohammadamin Gherabati Jan 2013

A Large Scale Network Model To Obtain Interwell Formation Characteristics, Seyedmohammadamin Gherabati

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Limited data availability and poor data quality make it difficult to characterize many reservoirs. For reservoirs that have undergone waterflooding, production and injection data are a reliable source of information from which injector-to-producer connections can be inferred. In this research, we use well locations, injection and production rate data and well fractional flow values to develop a reservoir-scale network model. A Voronoi mesh divides the reservoir into a number of node volumes each of which contains a well. Bonds connect each of the nodes with conductance values that must be inferred from the rate data. An inverse problem is formulated …

Expecting The Unexpected : Measuring Uncertainties In Mobile Robot Path Planning In Dynamic Envionments, Yan Li, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher Jan 2013

Expecting The Unexpected : Measuring Uncertainties In Mobile Robot Path Planning In Dynamic Envionments, Yan Li, Brian Mac Namee, John D. Kelleher

Conference papers

Unexpected obstacles pose significant challenges to mobile robot navigation. In this paper we investigate how, based on the assumption that unexpected obstacles really follow patterns that can be exploited, a mobile robot can learn the locations within an environment that are likely to contain obstacles, and so plan optimal paths by avoiding these locations in subsequent navigation tasks. We propose the DUNC (Dynamically Updating Navigational Confidence) method to do this. We evaluate the performance of the DUNC method by comparing it with existing methods in a large number of randomly generated simulated test environments. our evaluations show that, by learning …

A New Diagnostics Tool For Water Injected Gas Turbines - Emissions Monitoring And Modeling, Mohammed Shafi Syed Jan 2013

A New Diagnostics Tool For Water Injected Gas Turbines - Emissions Monitoring And Modeling, Mohammed Shafi Syed

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Natural gas-fired cogeneration systems are commonly used for large-scale industrial energy production – both electricity generation and heat recovery. Industrial cogeneration currently represents about 8% of the U.S. total electricity generation capacity. Plans call for cogeneration to increase to 20% of the generation capacity by the end of 2030 [1, 2]. Industrial cogeneration systems attain both high thermal efficiency and low emissions. The attainment of low emissions from natural gas fired turbines, in particular low NOx emissions, is of considerable environmental importance especially as coal becomes a less favorable fuel source. Our current project addresses emissions and performance modeling of …

A Study On The Cleaning And Modification Of Metal Surfaces By Direct Current Cathodic Electrolytic Plasma Process, Jiandong Liang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The processes of surface treatments or surface modifications, more formally known as surface engineering, tailor the surfaces of engineering materials. The treatments are usually intended to change physical properties such as thermal or electrical conductivity, modify the surface dimensions, i.e. roughness, etc. A novel surface treatment method, Electrolytic Plasma Process (EPP), was developed for coating purposes, in its early developmental stage. In this work, the major effort is to avoid using any environmental hazardous chemical (coatings) and to extend such its application to some new fields. The general response of the substrate material under electrolytic plasma process was summarized including …
