Application Of Composite Polymeric Membranes For Efficient Regeneration Of Physical Solvents, Alireza Pesaran Jan 2013

Application Of Composite Polymeric Membranes For Efficient Regeneration Of Physical Solvents, Alireza Pesaran

Theses and Dissertations

The most dominant CO2 capture technology used for pre-combustion capture involves the application of physical solvents. Despite the low energy required to regenerate physical solvents and their high capacity for capturing and separating acid gases from the syngas produced in a gasification plant, physical solvents have some disadvantages including CO2 pressure loss and the energy required to pump the solvent to the high pressure absorber.

The primary objective of this work is to evaluate the use of composite polymeric membranes for the recovery of CO2 from CO2-rich solvent streams. To achieve this purpose, an experimental bench-scale setup was built to …

Wendell Berry's Philosophy Of Education: Lessons From Port William, Jane Margaret Schreck Jan 2013

Wendell Berry's Philosophy Of Education: Lessons From Port William, Jane Margaret Schreck

Theses and Dissertations

In the midst of a proclaimed crisis in higher education, in the clamor and clamber to leverage technology for such innovations as mass open online courses and differentiated learning modules, in the speculative frenzy of preparing students for the careers of a fantasy future, and in the swirl of angst about funding accountability and economic relevance, Wendell Berry's philosophy of education declares that the essential element missing from most current discussions and considerations of education is love. As explained in his essays and revealed in his fiction and poetry, Berry's philosophy centers on love as the best animator of learning: …

Recalcitrant Arguments, Kiranjeet Kaur Dhillon Jan 2013

Recalcitrant Arguments, Kiranjeet Kaur Dhillon

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

On January 26, 2011, Reuters photojournalist Amr Abdallah Dalsh took an image of a unknown veiled woman gesturing at Dalsh and his camera. Using TinEye, a reverse image search engine, I found that 86 circulations and 22 recirculations of the photo were primarily in the United States. US graphic artist Nick Bygon created one of the recirculations, which primarily appeared on US blogs. The photo achieved this level of circulation in the US because it is consistent with, and therefore legible within the symbolic language, of the liberal democratic order. Similar to “Migrant Mother” and “Tank Man”, the photo is …

Research About Low Permeability Measurement, Jun He Jan 2013

Research About Low Permeability Measurement, Jun He

Theses and Dissertations

Petroleum exploration and production from shale formations have gained great attention throughout the world in the last decade. Producing the hydrocarbons from shale is challenging because of the low porosity and permeability. It is imperative to investigate permeability of the shale formations in order to better understand the performance of wells that are producing hydrocarbons from shale. Permeability is also one of key parameters in modeling fluids flow in matrix in reservoir simulation. Due to the low or very low permeability, the measurement of permeability is time consuming and expensive. These factors often limited the ability to perform permeability measurement …

Negotiation Stands Alone, Alexandra Crampton, Michael Tsur Jan 2013

Negotiation Stands Alone, Alexandra Crampton, Michael Tsur

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Yes, the authors concede, “everybody” negotiates: but that’s like saying “everybody drives,” and then watching aghast when “everybody” climbs into a racing car, or an eighteen-wheeled tractor trailer. The authors draw from Tsur’s experience teaching Israeli hostage negotiators and in other high-pressure environments to argue for an entirely distinct concept of a professional negotiator, one that starts with a rather experienced “student” and builds a sharply different training regimen from there.

Code Clone Discovery Based On Concolic Analysis, Daniel Edward Krutz Jan 2013

Code Clone Discovery Based On Concolic Analysis, Daniel Edward Krutz

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Software is often large, complicated and expensive to build and maintain. Redundant

code can make these applications even more costly and difficult to maintain. Duplicated

code is often introduced into these systems for a variety of reasons. Some of which

include developer churn, deficient developer application comprehension and lack of

adherence to proper development practices.

Code redundancy has several adverse effects on a software application including an

increased size of the codebase and inconsistent developer changes due to elevated

program comprehension needs. A code clone is defined as multiple code fragments that

produce similar results when given the same input. …

Application Of A Layered Hidden Markov Model In The Detection Of Network Attacks, Lawrence Taub Jan 2013

Application Of A Layered Hidden Markov Model In The Detection Of Network Attacks, Lawrence Taub

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

Network-based attacks against computer systems are a common and increasing problem. Attackers continue to increase the sophistication and complexity of their attacks with the goal of removing sensitive data or disrupting operations. Attack detection technology works very well for the detection of known attacks using a signature-based intrusion detection system. However, attackers can utilize attacks that are undetectable to those signature-based systems whether they are truly new attacks or modified versions of known attacks. Anomaly-based intrusion detection systems approach the problem of attack detection by detecting when traffic differs from a learned baseline. In the case of this research, the …

Our Place In The World: A New Relationship For Environmental Ethics And Law, Jedediah S. Purdy Jan 2013

Our Place In The World: A New Relationship For Environmental Ethics And Law, Jedediah S. Purdy

Faculty Scholarship

Forty years ago, at the birth of environmental law, both legal and philosophical luminaries assumed that the new field would be closely connected with environmental ethics. Instead, the two grew dramatically apart. This Article diagnoses that divorce and proposes a rapprochement. Environmental law has always grown through changes in public values; for this and other reasons, it cannot do so without ethics. Law and ethics are most relevant to each other when there are large open questions in environmental politics: lawmakers act only when some ethical clarity arises; but law can itself assist in that ethical development. This process is …

Using Design Experiments To Conduct Research On Mathematics Professional Development, Paola Sztajn, Holt Wilson, Cyndi Edgington, M Myers, Lara Dick

Faculty Journal Articles

In this paper, we propose that the emerging transformation of mathematics professional development from a practice-based to a research field would benefit from stronger connections to research on learning. In particular, we contend that design experiments represent a premier emerging methodology to study learning, and we argue that a better understanding of teacher learning through the use of design experiments in mathematics professional development can lead to improvement of mathematics professional development as both an area of practice and a field of research.
