Broadcasting With Prediction And Selective Forwarding In Vehicular Networks, Jainjun Yang, Zongming Fei Dec 2013

Broadcasting With Prediction And Selective Forwarding In Vehicular Networks, Jainjun Yang, Zongming Fei

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Broadcasting in vehicular networks has attracted great interest in research community and industry. Broadcasting on disseminating information to individual vehicle beyond the transmission range is based on inter-vehicle communication systems. It is crucial to broadcast messages to other vehicles as fast as possible because the messages in vehicle communication systems are often emergency messages such as accident warning or alarm. In many current approaches, the message initiator or sender selects the node among its neighbors that is farthest away from it in the broadcasting direction and then assigns the node to rebroadcast the message once the node gets out of …

Wireless Localism: Beyond The Shroud Of Objectivity In Federal Spectrum Administration, Olivier Sylvain Dec 2013

Wireless Localism: Beyond The Shroud Of Objectivity In Federal Spectrum Administration, Olivier Sylvain

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Recent innovations in mobile wireless technology have instigated a debate between two camps of legal scholars about federal administration of the electromagnetic spectrum. The first camp argues that the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) should define spectrum use rights more clearly and give spectrum licensees broad property rights in frequencies. The second camp argues that, rather than award exclusive licenses to the highest bidder, the FCC ought to open much, if not most, of the spectrum to unlicensed use by smartphones and tablets equipped with the newest spectrum administration technology. First, this Article shows that both of these camps comprise a …

Tollbooths And Newsstands On The Information Superhighway, Brad A. Greenberg

Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review

Countering the perception that speech limitations affecting distribution necessarily reduce access to information, this Essay proffers that copyright expansions actually can increase access and thereby serve important copyright and First Amendment values. In doing so, this discussion contributes to the growing literature and two recent Supreme Court opinions discussing whether copyright law and First Amendment interests can coexist.

Settlement Selection: A Critical Consideration For A New National Spatial Strategy Plan? Applying Population And Daytime Working Population Data To A Centrality Spreadsheet Model To Inform An Evidence Base For Gateway And Hub Selection, Brian Hughes Dec 2013

Settlement Selection: A Critical Consideration For A New National Spatial Strategy Plan? Applying Population And Daytime Working Population Data To A Centrality Spreadsheet Model To Inform An Evidence Base For Gateway And Hub Selection, Brian Hughes

Masters

Settlement Selection: A Critical Consideration for a New National Spatial Strategy Plan? This Dissertation examines both Central Statistics Office (CSO) published and unpublished demographic evidence from the 2011 and previous censuses, so as to evaluate the 2002 National Spatial Strategy’s (NSS) selection of Gateways and Hub settlements. On its own, population is an incomplete measure of size. However, when used with emerging employment data, a robust methodological time-dynamic centrality model may be constructed based on population and Daytime Working Population (DWP) behaviour and other related and relevant investigations. The Model compares unpublished 2002 data of the NSS Plan with similar …

Private Standards Organizations And Public Law, Peter L. Strauss Dec 2013

Private Standards Organizations And Public Law, Peter L. Strauss

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Simplified, universal access to law is one of the important transformations worked by the digital age. With the replacement of physical by digital copies, citizens ordinarily need travel only to the nearest computer to find and read the texts that bind them. Lagging behind this development, however, has been computer access to standards developed by private standards development organizations, often under the umbrella of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and then converted by agency actions incorporating them by reference into legal obligations. To discover what colors the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires for use in work-place caution …

Physics Trick - Balanced Can, Said Shakerin Dec 2013

Physics Trick - Balanced Can, Said Shakerin

All Faculty Articles - School of Engineering and Computer Science

The ordinary 12-oz beverage cans in the figures below are not held up with any props or glue. The bottom of such cans is stepped at its circumference for better stacking. When this kind of can is tilted, as shown in Fig. 1, the outside corners of the step touch the surface beneath, providing an effective contact about 1 cm wide. Because the contact is relatively wide and the geometry is symmetrical, it is easy to balance an empty can by simply adding an appropriate amount of water so that the overall center of mass is located directly above the …

Complognormal: An R Package For Composite Lognormal Distributions, S. Nadarajah, S. A.A. Bakar

The R Journal

In recent years, composite models based on the lognormal distribution have become popular in actuarial sciences and related areas. In this short note, we present a new R package for computing the probability density function, cumulative density function, and quantile function, and for generating random numbersof anycomposite model based on the lognormal distribution. The use of the package is illustrated using a real data set.

The R In Robotics, André Dietrich, Sebastian Zug, Jörg Kaiser

The R Journal

The aim of this contribution is to connect two previously separated worlds: robotic application development with the Robot Operating System (ROS) and statistical programming with R. This fruitful combination becomes apparent especially in the analysis and visualization of sensory data. We therefore introduce a new language extension for ROS that allows to implement nodes in pure R. All relevant aspects are described in a step-by-step development of a common sensor data transformation node. This includes the reception of raw sensory data via the ROS network, message interpretation, bag-file analysis, transformation and visualization, as well as the transmission of newly generated …

Hayden, Tristram, And A Pigeon From “Nebraska”, Rick Wright Dec 2013

Hayden, Tristram, And A Pigeon From “Nebraska”, Rick Wright

Nebraska Bird Review

A passenger pigeon skin in the World Museum in Liverpool, England, was collected during an expedition to Nebraska and Dakota led by Gouverneur K. Warren between 1855 and 1857 and later cataloged by geologist and naturalist Ferdinand V. Hayden. For a time it was in the collection of Henry Baker Tristram, a famous naturalist and a founder of the British Ornithologists’ Union. Passenger pigeons were once “quite abundant” along the Missouri River.

The Effects Of Wrist Orthoses On The Stiffness Of Wrist Rotations, Daniel Brad Seegmiller Dec 2013

The Effects Of Wrist Orthoses On The Stiffness Of Wrist Rotations, Daniel Brad Seegmiller

Theses and Dissertations

Wrist orthoses are the most common upper limb orthoses, being used by thousands of individuals each year to stabilize, immobilize, or support the wrist joint. Wrist orthoses achieve their function by altering the stiffness of the wrist joint (Figure 1-1). However, there is no quantitative understanding of how wrist orthoses affect wrist stiffness, and consequently, wrist orthosis development often relies on feel, intuition, or empirical heuristics rather than a methodical, quantitative approach. Because wrist movement control is dominated by wrist joint stiffness (Charles and Hogan 2011) a quantitative understanding of how wrist orthoses alter the stiffness of the wrist is …

Ferritin-Based Photo-Oxidation Of Biomass For Nanoparticle Synthesis, Bioremediation, And Hydrogen Evolution, Oscar Petrucci Dec 2013

Ferritin-Based Photo-Oxidation Of Biomass For Nanoparticle Synthesis, Bioremediation, And Hydrogen Evolution, Oscar Petrucci

Theses and Dissertations

The cell is the basic unit of all living organisms. It is an amazing machine capable of self-replicating, growing, and synthesizing and shuttling thousands of compounds. To perform all of these activities the cell needs energy. The original source of energy for all living beings is the Sun. The energy of the sun is collected by the autotrophs (mostly plants) through photosynthesis and stored in the chemical bonds of carbohydrates and lipids through carboxylic acid intermediates; animals use these compounds to obtain the energy for their cells. Most of the energy extracted by the cell comes from the citric acid …

Algorithms For The Implementation Of A Dynamic Energy Pricing Policy, Manek Biswas Dec 2013

Algorithms For The Implementation Of A Dynamic Energy Pricing Policy, Manek Biswas

Theses - ALL

In the upcoming smart grid era, dynamic pricing using primarily data collected from smart meters installed in homes and businesses is a virtual certainty. The possibilities this feature may offer are many, and we examine in this study how subunits of the electricity grid may implement load scheduling given a model for predicting ever-changing energy prices over a day. We present a realistic linear model that utilities may use for implementing dynamic pricing, and argue how accurate prediction of this model by its customers may be profitable both for the utilities and their customers.

The thesis provides algorithms for achieving …

Raman Spectroscopic Investigation Of Chondroitinase Abc Treatment After Spinal Cord Injury In An Organotypic Model, Shane Ruberto Dec 2013

Raman Spectroscopic Investigation Of Chondroitinase Abc Treatment After Spinal Cord Injury In An Organotypic Model, Shane Ruberto

Theses - ALL

This study investigated (1) the ability of an organotypic model of spinal cord injury (SCI) to recapitulate significant pathobiological events of in vivo SCI from a Raman spectroscopic perspective, and (2) the Raman spectroscopic effects of chondroitinase ABC (cABC) treatment on said model of SCI. Tissue from mouse spinal cords was excised, sectioned, and placed into culture, before being systematically injured to induce trauma. Cultures with and without cABC treatment were assessed using Raman spectroscopy at varying times post-injury. We demonstrate that Raman spectral phenomena characteristic of SCI can be observed using an organotypic model. By comparing these phenomena with …

A Physicochemical Evaluation Of The Compressibility And Dewatering Behavior Of Dredged Sediments, George F. Segré Dec 2013

A Physicochemical Evaluation Of The Compressibility And Dewatering Behavior Of Dredged Sediments, George F. Segré

Theses - ALL

The dewatering of low percent solids wastes from tailings ponds, harbors, and waterways presents a challenge in the U.S. and abroad, given the vast amounts that need to be dewatered annually. The United Stated Corps of Engineers estimate about 8.5x109 ft3 of dredged sediments are removed annually in order to keep waterways functional. Dewatering may be achieved with the aid of high strength synthetic textiles, such as geotextiles, which may be sewn lengthwise to form a geotextile tube. Typically, dredged material is mixed with flocculants such as polyacrylamide (PAM), and then pumped into geotextile tubes. In doing so, the flocculants …

Reducing Digestible Tidbits From Meaty Stock: Satisfying Varied Tastes With An Attractive Instructional Assessment Menu, Erika Bennett, Jennie Simning, Kim Staley Dec 2013

Reducing Digestible Tidbits From Meaty Stock: Satisfying Varied Tastes With An Attractive Instructional Assessment Menu, Erika Bennett, Jennie Simning, Kim Staley

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

Do you collect streams of data that never see the light of day? Libraries are more frequently being held accountable for metrics via scorecards, dashboards, and other short snapshots of performance. Information Literacy practitioners have meanwhile moved away from tick-marks to a learning outcome assessment culture. This means that the full array of evaluative, formative and summative approaches-- competencies, tests, self-reports and rubrics-- can leave new librarians' heads spinning.

Learning outcomes data are hard to wrangle, let alone, in a digestible format, but fresh assessment approaches can fully illustrate the benefits of our varied media and modes of instruction. Instead …

Shared-Use Bus Priority Lanes On City Streets: Approaches To Access And Enforcement, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Todd Goldman, Nancy Hannaford Dec 2013

Shared-Use Bus Priority Lanes On City Streets: Approaches To Access And Enforcement, Asha Weinstein Agrawal, Todd Goldman, Nancy Hannaford

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper examines policies and strategies governing the operations of bus lanes in major congested urban centers where the bus lanes do not completely exclude other uses. The two key questions addressed are: 1. What is the scope of the priority use granted to buses? When is bus priority in effect, and what other users may share the lanes during these times? 2. How are the lanes enforced? To answer these questions, the study developed detailed cases on management strategies in seven cities that currently have shared-use bus priority lanes: Los Angeles, London, New York City, Paris, San Francisco, Seoul, …

Bike-And-Ride: Build It And They Will Come, Robert Cervero, Benjamin Caldwell, Jesus Cuellar Dec 2013

Bike-And-Ride: Build It And They Will Come, Robert Cervero, Benjamin Caldwell, Jesus Cuellar

Journal of Public Transportation

Converting park-and-ride to bike-and-ride trips could yield important environmental, energy conservation, and public-health benefits. While cycling in general is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, it still makes up a miniscule portion of access trips to most rail transit stations. At several rail stations of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, 10 percent or more of access trips are by bicycle, up considerably from a decade earlier. This paper adopts a case-study approach to probe factors that have had a hand in not only cycling grabbing a larger market share of access trips to rail stops, but also …

Simulation-Based Regression Models To Estimate Bus Routes And Network Travel Times, Yaser E. Hawas Dec 2013

Simulation-Based Regression Models To Estimate Bus Routes And Network Travel Times, Yaser E. Hawas

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper presents an approach to estimate bus route and network travel times using micro-simulation. This can be used in predicting the effectiveness of bus route designs using some network traffic measures or indicators. The used indicators are average network traffic intensity, posted speeds, route length, frequency of bus operation, and average passenger loadings (boarding and alighting). Regression models are calibrated to predict both route and overall network travel times. The prediction errors of these models were investigated and analyzed, and regression models were validated. Results indicated the validity of the calibrated regression models. Conclusions are made on how the …

Genetic Variability Of Spined Soldier Bugs (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Sampled From Distinct Field Sites And Laboratory Colonies In The United States, Fatima Mustafa, Muhammad Ullah, Kathleen M. Kneeland, Thomas A. Coudron, W. Wyatt Hoback, S. R. Skoda, Jaime Molina-Ochoa, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The spined soldier bug, Podisus maculiventris (Say), is an important biological control agent of agricultural and forest pests; and it preys on eggs and larvae of lepidopteran and coleopteran species. Genetic variability among field samples collected from Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Florida and established laboratory colonies was examined using Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism-Polymerase Chain Reaction (AFLP-PCR). Four AFLP primer pairs generated a total of 340 molecular markers for evaluation. Results from Analysis of Molecular Variance showed that the majority of the genetic variation occurred within populations (individuals from each sample site). Nei’s method indicated reduced genetic diversity in laboratory populations compared …

Proteomic Profiling Of Burkholderia Cenocepacia Clonal Isolates With Different Virulence Potential Retrieved From A Cystic Fibrosis Patient During Chronic Lung Infection., Siobhan Mcclean, Máire Callaghan, Jean Tyrrell, Isabelle Sa Correia Dec 2013

Proteomic Profiling Of Burkholderia Cenocepacia Clonal Isolates With Different Virulence Potential Retrieved From A Cystic Fibrosis Patient During Chronic Lung Infection., Siobhan Mcclean, Máire Callaghan, Jean Tyrrell, Isabelle Sa Correia

Articles

Respiratory infections with Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) bacteria in cystic fibrosis (CF) are associated with a worse prognosis and increased risk of death. In this work, we assessed the virulence potential of three B. cenocepacia clonal isolates obtained from a CF patient between the onset of infection (isolate IST439) and before death with cepacia syndrome 3.5 years later (isolate IST4113 followed by IST4134), based on their ability to invade epithelial cells and compromise epithelial monolayer integrity. The two clonal isolates retrieved during late-stage disease were significantly more virulent than IST439. Proteomic profiling by 2-D DIGE of the last isolate recovered …

The Seat-Belt Defense In Georgia, Jacob E. Daly Dec 2013

The Seat-Belt Defense In Georgia, Jacob E. Daly

Mercer Law Review

For a doctrine of common-law origin, the seat-belt defense is a relatively youthful fifty years old. Credit for the first use of this defense has been attributed to the defendant in Stockinger v. Dunisch, a 1964 case in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, in which the plaintiff's damages were reduced by 10% based on the jury's finding that she was negligent for failing to use a seat belt. Despite this initial success, most states have rejected the defense, some legislatively and others judicially, and therefore exclude evidence of a plaintiffs failure to use an available seat belt. The Georgia Court of …

Humor As A Tool For Addressing The Affective Domain During Information Literacy Instruction, Joshua Vossler, John Watts Dec 2013

Humor As A Tool For Addressing The Affective Domain During Information Literacy Instruction, Joshua Vossler, John Watts

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

Gaining and maintaining student attention during information literacy instruction can be a challenge. To address this challenge, entertainment value, as well as instructional efficacy, ought to be factored into assessment and design of instructional materials. Information literacy instruction should be as much about building bridges with students as it is about imparting useful information and skills. Entertaining while educating (edutaining), promotes student attention and helps build a positive learning environment. In this interactive session, attendees will participate in a practical approach to producing creative and entertaining content for information literacy instruction.
