Sustainable Development And The Issue Of Water In The Kagera Region Of Tanzania, Teresa M. Dresner Dec 2013

Sustainable Development And The Issue Of Water In The Kagera Region Of Tanzania, Teresa M. Dresner

Theses & Dissertations

Over the last five decades, an abundance of research on sustainable development has emerged in multiple disciplinary areas, but few studies on the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainability have examined water issues for rural communities. Consequently, the purpose of this case study was to understand how a group of rural women from the Kagera region in Tanzania perceived and experienced sustainable development as a result of their improved access to water. The following central questions of the study sought to explore the local meanings of sustainable development and improved water sources: (a) How was life of rural women …

Colorism: The Unspoken Preference To Skin Tone And Its Effect On African American Individuals In The 21st Century, Carolyn D. Powell

Theses & Dissertations

This qualitative study explored the perception of colorism among Black American individuals born between the years of 1952 and 1972 of the pre-Civil Rights Movement and post-Civil Rights Movement generations. Colorism has been defined as the privileging of light skin tone over dark skin tone. The stigma of colorism continues to produce discord, distrust, discrimination, and cultural disconnects between Black and White individuals as well as within the Black American family and community. The aim of the study was to explore the consciousness of colorism in the 21st century and its effect on Black Americans. Racial Identity Development was utilized …

From Sex For Pleasure To Sex For Parenthood: How The Law Manufactures Mothers, Beth A. Burkstrand-Reid Dec 2013

From Sex For Pleasure To Sex For Parenthood: How The Law Manufactures Mothers, Beth A. Burkstrand-Reid

Nebraska College of Law: Faculty Publications

As soon as sperm enter a woman, so do law and politics, or so the decades-long disputes surrounding abortion suggest. Now, however, renewed debates surrounding contraceptives show legal and political interference with women’s sexual and reproductive autonomy may actually precede the sperm. This Article argues that, increasingly, women even thinking about having sex are defined socially and legally as “mothers.” Via this broad definition of who is a “mother,” the State extends its reach into women’s decision-making throughout their reproductive lifetime.

This Article argues that the State simultaneously devalues women’s choices to have sex for pleasure, which this Article calls …

The Global Emission Game: On The Impact Of Strategic Interactions Between Countries On The Existence And The Properties Of Nash Equilibria, Mélanie Heugues Dec 2013

The Global Emission Game: On The Impact Of Strategic Interactions Between Countries On The Existence And The Properties Of Nash Equilibria, Mélanie Heugues

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In a context of laissez-faire, the propositions established in this paper shed light on the evolution of the problem of greenhouse gas (GHG) accumulation in the atmosphere for each type of strategic behaviour resulting from countries’ interconnection on global markets. In a framework of strong economic interdependencies, they show the potential consequences of the free trade arrangements on the environment and question the idea that free trade liberalisation should necessarily lead to an increase in countries’ welfare. This paper provides an exhaustive typology of countries’ strategic behaviours and a strong static comparative analysis with regard to the exogenous parameters of …

Non-Co2 Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Modeling With Marginal Abatement Cost Curves: Technical Change, Emission Scenarios And Policy Costs, Samuel Carrara, Giacomo Marangoni Dec 2013

Non-Co2 Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Modeling With Marginal Abatement Cost Curves: Technical Change, Emission Scenarios And Policy Costs, Samuel Carrara, Giacomo Marangoni

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The abatement of non-CO2 greenhouse gases (OGHG) has proved to be of paramount importance for reaching global mitigation targets. The modeling of their abatement is normally carried out referring to marginal abatement cost (MAC) curves, which by now represent a standard approach for such an analysis. As no evolution scenarios are available to describe future mitigation opportunities for OGHGs, exogenous technical progress factors (TP) are normally imposed, producing progressive MAC dilatation over time. The main aim of this work is to perform a sensitivity analysis evaluating climate and economic effects of imposing various TPs under different policy scenarios: the analysis …

Religious Multicultural Competence Amongst Dance/Movement Therapists, Jaclyn Abramson

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this study was to understand how dance/movement therapists, with BC-DMT or R-DMT credentials, acquire, foster, and perceive their own religious multicultural competence. The research question was how do dance/movement therapists develop religious multicultural competence? Through the methodology of a qualitative case study and the data collection method of a focus group, I examined the selfperception of each participant’s own religious multicultural competence. After I transcribed and analyzed the data, I uncovered several themes, highlighted in the Results section. Once the analysis was complete, I utilized the data analysis method of intuitive inquiry. Findings included a) a definition …

The Lived Experience Of Vicarious Trauma For Providers: A Narrative Phenomenoleogical Study, Ambryn D. Melius

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

This research seeks to gain a greater understanding of the first-hand, lived experience of vicarious trauma for providers who have worked with individuals experiencing trauma. Through the application of phenomenological and participatory action methodologies, the experience of vicarious trauma is illuminated. Narrative exchanges between the co-researchers–the author and eleven providers–further explore the roles of the body and narrative process within this phenomenon. A conceptual evolution of vicarious trauma is presented, along with literature connecting the body and narrative within the trauma field. Data includes co-researcher’s recorded and transcribed interviews, vicarious trauma narratives, and written feedback. Embodied writing selections conducted by …

A Journey Through The Embodiment Of Aggression, Anson Relick

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this research study was to understand what I could learn from my body as I experienced movements based on the observation of children’s aggression. There were several research questions that guided this study: how could the embodiment of aggression prepare me in my journey of becoming a dance/movement therapist? What would develop for me on a body level when I embodied movement qualities I associated with aggression? How could I gain a greater sense of empathy for my patients who act out aggressively? And are there recuperative or preventative measures I could help my patients take, based …

Beyond Prejudice And Pride: The Human Sciences In Nineteenth And Twentieth Century Latin America, Julia E. Rodriguez Dec 2013

Beyond Prejudice And Pride: The Human Sciences In Nineteenth And Twentieth Century Latin America, Julia E. Rodriguez

History

Grappling with problematics of status and hierarchy, recent literature on the history of the human sciences in Latin America has gone through three overlapping phases. First, the scholarship has reflected a dialogue between Latin American scientists and their European colleagues, characterized by the “center/periphery” model of scientific diffusion. Next, scholars drew on postcolonial theory to undermine the power of the “center” and to recover the role of local agents, including both elites and subalterns. In the wake of numerous studies embracing both models, the way has been cleared to look at multiple dimensions simultaneously. Histories of the human sciences in …

Layered Long Term Co-Culture Of Hepatocytes And Endothelial Cells On A Transwell Membrane: Toward Engineering The Liver Sinusoid, Young Bok (Abraham) Kang, Siddhartha Rawat, Joseph Cirillo, Michael Bouchard, Hongseok (Moses) Noh

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

This paper presents a novel liver model that mimics the liver sinusoid where most liver activities occur. A key aspect of our current liver model is a layered co-culture of primary rat hepatocytes (PRHs) and primary rat liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) or bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) on a transwell membrane. When a layered co-culture was attempted with a thin matrigel layer placed between hepatocytes and endothelial cells to mimic the Space of Disse, the cells did not form completely separated monolayers. However, when hepatocytes and endothelial cells were cultured on the opposite sides of a transwell membrane, PRHs …

Sublethal Behavioral And Physiological Effects Of The Biomedical Bleeding Process On The American Horseshoe Crab, Limulus Polyphemus, Winsor H. Watson Iii, Rebecca L. Anderson, Christopher C. Chabot

Jackson Estuarine Laboratory

The hemolymph of the American horseshoe crab, Limulus polyphemus, is harvested from over 500,000 animals annually to produce Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), a medically important product used to detect pathogenic bacteria. Declining abundance of spawning Limulus females in heavily harvested regions suggests deleterious effects of this activity, and while mortality rates of the harvest process are known to be 10%–30%, sublethal behavioral and physiological effects are not known. In this study, we determined the impact of the harvest process on locomotion and hemocyanin levels of 28 female horseshoe crabs. While mortality rates after bleeding (18%) were similar to previous studies, …

Macrodeterminants Of Labor Migration From Cee Accession Countries To Select Eu Countries, Denise Joanne François-Seeney Dec 2013

Macrodeterminants Of Labor Migration From Cee Accession Countries To Select Eu Countries, Denise Joanne François-Seeney

Dissertations

This dissertation provides a comprehensive and evidentiary theoretical framework on the economic forces behind labor migration among Central and Eastern European (CEE) economies and the impact of said labor migration on European Union (EU) economies. Specifically, this dissertation limits the scope of its discussion as to the nature of macroeconomic effects of CEE migration to the selected destination countries: of the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Denmark, and Sweden. Labor flows between the EU and the CEE region seem to be a response to poorly functioning labor markets, insufficient productive capital, a relatively low quality of life, and an increasing …

Urban Watershed Services For Improved Ecosystem Management And Risk Reduction, Assessment Methods And Policy Instruments: State Of The Art, Yaella Depietri, Lorenzo Guadagno, Margaretha Breil Dec 2013

Urban Watershed Services For Improved Ecosystem Management And Risk Reduction, Assessment Methods And Policy Instruments: State Of The Art, Yaella Depietri, Lorenzo Guadagno, Margaretha Breil

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Under scenarios of increasing unplanned urban expansion, environmental degradation and hazard exposure, the vulnerability of urban populations, especially of their poorer segments, needs to be tackled through integrated economic, social and environmental solutions. Basing our analysis on the concept of ecosystem services, we suggest that urban areas would benefit from a shift in perspective towards a more regional approach, which recognizes them as one of many interconnected elements that interact at the watershed level. By integrating an ecosystem approach into the management of water-related services, urban management policies can take a first step towards fostering an improvement of the health …

Energy Prices And The Real Exchange Rate Of Commodity-Exporting Countries, Magali Dauvin Dec 2013

Energy Prices And The Real Exchange Rate Of Commodity-Exporting Countries, Magali Dauvin

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper investigates the relationship between energy prices and the real effective exchange rate of commodity-exporting countries. We consider two sets of countries: 10 energy-exporting and 23 non-fuel commodity-exporting countries over the period 1980-2011. Estimating a panel cointegrating relationship between the real exchange rate and its fundamentals, we provide evidence for the existence of "energy currencies". Relying on the estimation of panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) models, we show that there exists a certain threshold beyond which the real effective exchange rate of both energy and commodity exporters reacts to oil prices, through the terms-of-trade. More specifically, when oil price …

The most current version of the Bankruptcy Code, the Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA), is considered one of the most technical and comprehensive reforms to the Bankruptcy Code. Facing a dramatic increase in consumer bankruptcies and fearing an increase in abuse of the system, Congress included stricter guidelines and rules to try and prevent debtor abuse in BAPCPA. Another addition that BAPCPA added, and at the heart of this Comment, was the addition of a hanging paragraph to the Bankruptcy Code section 523(a). The issue of whether a person can discharge their tax liability through a Chapter …

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program And Food Insecurity, Christian Gregory, Matthew P. Rabbitt, David C. Ribar Dec 2013

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program And Food Insecurity, Christian Gregory, Matthew P. Rabbitt, David C. Ribar

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

This chapter reviews recent theory and empirical evidence regarding the effect of SNAP on food insecurity and replicates the modelling strategies used in the empirical literature. The authors find that recent evidence suggesting an ameliorative effect of SNAP on food insecurity may not be robust to specification choice or data. Most specifications mirror the existing literature in finding a positive association of food insecurity with SNAP participation. Two-stage least squares and control function methods do show that SNAP reduces food insecurity, but effects are not consistent across sub-populations and are not always statistically significant.

We assessed Escherichia coli ST131 and its H30 and H30-Rx subclones for virulence genes, antimicrobial resistance, and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) type. Although both subclones were associated with ESBL production, H30-Rx isolates had higher resistance scores and were associated specifically with CTX-M-15. Three virulence genes (iha, sat, and iutA) were more prevalent among H30 than non-H30 ST131 isolates. Thus, the H30 and H30-Rx subclones are more antimicrobial resistant and have virulence profiles that are distinct from those of non-H30 ST131 isolates.

Journal Articles: Pharmaceutical Sciences

We have tested five distinct classes of established and experimental antimalarial drugs for their anticancer potential, using a panel of 91 human cancer lines. Three classes of drugs: artemisinins, synthetic peroxides and DHFR (dihydrofolate reductase) inhibitors effected potent inhibition of proliferation with IC50s in the nM- low µM range, whereas a DHODH (dihydroorotate dehydrogenase) and a putative kinase inhibitor displayed no activity. Furthermore, significant synergies were identified with erlotinib, imatinib, cisplatin, dasatinib and vincristine. Cluster analysis of the antimalarials based on their differential inhibition of the various cancer lines clearly segregated the synthetic peroxides OZ277 and OZ439 from the artemisinin …

Jewish Genetic Origins In The Context Of Past Historical And Anthropological Inquiries, John M. Efron Dec 2013

Jewish Genetic Origins In The Context Of Past Historical And Anthropological Inquiries, John M. Efron

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The contemporary study of Jewish genetics has a long prehistory dating back to the eighteenth century. Prior to the era of genetics studies of the physical makeup of Jews were undertaken by comparative anatomists and physical anthropologists. In the nineteenth century the field was referred to as “race science.” Believed by many race scientists to be a homogeneous and pure race, Jews occupied a central position in the discourse of race science because they were seen as the control group par excellence to determine the relative primacy of nature or nurture in the development of racial characteristics. In the nineteenth …

Chromatin-Induced Spindle Assembly Plays An Important Role In Metaphase Congression Of Silkworm Holocentric Chromosomes, Hiroaki Mon, Jae Man Lee, Kazuei Mita, Marian R. Goldsmith, Takahiro Kusakabe

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The kinetochore plays important roles in cell cycle progression. Interactions between 4 chromosomes and spindle microtubules allow chromosomes to congress to the middle of the 5 cell and to segregate the sister chromatids into daughter cells in mitosis. The chromosome 6 passenger complex (CPC), composed of the Aurora B kinase and its regulatory subunits 7 INCENP, Survivin, and Borealin, plays multiple roles in these chromosomal events. In the 8 genome of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, which has holocentric chromosomes, the CPC 9 components and their molecular interactions were highly conserved. In contrast to 10 monocentric species, however, the silkworm CPC …

A series of experiments were conducted in vivo using Yucatan miniature pigs (Sus scrofa domestica) to determine thermal damage thresholds to the skin from 1319-nm continuous-wave Nd:YAG laser irradiation. Experiments employed exposure durations of 0.25, 1.0, 2.5, and 10 s and beam diameters of ∼0.6 and 1 cm. Thermal imagery data provided a time-dependent surface temperature response from the laser. A damage endpoint of fifty percent probability of a minimally visible effect was used to determine threshold for damage at 1 and 24 h postexposure. Predicted thermal response and damage thresholds are compared with a numerical model of opticalthermal interaction. …
