Dialogic Ethics: Leadership And The Face Of The Other, Karen Lollar
Dialogic Ethics: Leadership And The Face Of The Other, Karen Lollar
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
Foundational to a relational ethic is the belief that healthy human existence requires respect for others, respect that does not work to reduce their otherness to the sameness that is familiar. It is not enough that the face of another person arouses awareness. What pragmatic action does it require? This article explores the application of a Levinasian ethic on day-to-day practice in the academy. Weaving together short vignettes from daily work practice with principles of ethics from Emmanuel Levinas (1969, 1997), the author concludes with a vision of the possibility of creating a dwelling place based on dialogic ethics as …

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This paper examines three aspects of doctoral programs in Communication: (a) how doctoral department faculty compare using combined citations to published work using Google Scholar, (b) the contribution in quantity and quality (measured by citations) of alumni teaching in doctoral programs, and (c) identifying the top 25 most cited communication doctoral faculty in Google Scholar. The goal is to provide a series of additional alternatives for faculty and program evaluation beyond simply counting the number of published journal articles.

Changes In Mycorrhizal Spore And Root Colonization Of Coastal Dune Vegetation Of The Seyhan Delta In The Postcultivation Phase, Özlem Aytok, Kemal Tulühan Yilmaz, İbrahi̇m Ortaş, Hali̇l Çakan
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Changes in the abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) spores and root colonization that occurred in the postcultivation phase were investigated in the coastal dunes of the Seyhan Delta, Turkey. A sampling method was used to obtain community-level information, which is essential for the evaluation of relations between plant communities and AM colonization. Eight quadrats of 10 × 10 m were selected to describe floristic composition of different plant communities. TWINSPAN was applied to identify the plant communities. In addition, DECORANA was employed to put forward a clear ordination of the communities. Soil samples were collected at depths of 0-20 cm …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Dacryodes edulis, with its potential dietary and medicinal uses, is an aging member of the agroforestry system and is classified among the priority species for domestication in Central Africa. Reliable techniques for producing quality planting materials other than seeds are urgently needed. The aims of this study were to produce D. edulis layers and integrate them into the cropping system. To promote rooting and the survival rates of layers, 4 treatments were used. The layers produced were inoculated with mycorrhiza and introduced into cropping systems for the evaluation of morphobiochemical parameters. The results show that 67.91% of D. edulis trees …
Auxetic Springs For Seating, Jerzy Smardzewski
Auxetic Springs For Seating, Jerzy Smardzewski
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
It is commonly believed that furniture spring systems are far more durable and friendly to use than foam systems. The aim of this research project was to design and realise models of individual auxetic compression springs and determine their resistance to cyclic as well as prolonged static loads. The study was conducted using numerical calculations and verification of results by laboratory experiments. The results of the performed investigations made it possible to conclude that the designed spring had stiffness characteristics similar to the compression characteristics of polyurethane foams. Cyclical and prolonged static loads have no significant influence on changes in …

Survey Of Apple Mosaic Virus In Apple-Growing Provinces Of East Anatolia (Malatya And Van) By Rna Probe Hybridization Assay And Rt-Pcr, Gülüstan Korkmaz, Hi̇kmet Murat Si̇pahi̇oğlu, Mustafa Usta
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Two main apple growing provinces (Van and Malatya) of East Anatolia were surveyed for the presence of the Apple mosaic virus (ApMV). Dot-blot hybridization and RT-PCR tests were implemented to investigate the incidence of ApMV, testing a total of 481 samples collected from commercial apple orchards. Digoxigenin-labeled RNA probes of the ApMV were synthesized from the cloned PCR products and applied in dot-blot hybridization to detect the virus in RNA extracts isolated from fresh leaf tissues. A validated RNA probe (dot-blot) hybridization method was adopted to investigate the presence of ApMV infections in the apple orchards of East Anatolia. In …

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), or dermatosparaxis, is a rare hereditary disease of the connective tissue, which is characterized by skin hyperextensibility and laxity. In the present article, the case of a crossbred female spayed cat, at the age of 2 years, was presented with hyperelasticity of the skin, alopecia, and an ulcerative wound on the left hind leg. The animal's dorsum was hyperextensible, smooth to the touch, and could be easily torn with minor traumas. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the present report is the first documented feline case of cutaneous asthenia in Turkey.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Çiğ köfte is a traditional raw meat product consumed almost everywhere in Turkey. It has a poor hygienic quality and can contain several pathogenic bacteria as no heating or cooking process is applied during any stage of manufacturing. The effects of sodium lactate on the presence of Staphylococcus aureus were investigated during the display-life of çiğ köfte and the formation of enterotoxins was also investigated. For this purpose, çiğ köfte samples were manufactured with different concentrations of sodium lactate (1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% NaL) and examined either in ambient (20 ± 2 °C) or refrigerator (4 ± 2 °C) …
Paradox In Shakespeare's Tragicomedies : Pericles, Cymberline, The Winter's Tale, And The Tempest, Seamus Gilson
Paradox In Shakespeare's Tragicomedies : Pericles, Cymberline, The Winter's Tale, And The Tempest, Seamus Gilson
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Paradox in Shakespeare’s four tragicomedies - Pericles, Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest - is employed to explore the human experience, a journey filled with contradictions that thrive together. Shakespeare’s use of paradox takes on a different dimension in each play and, therefore, this essay will look at the paradox, or paradoxes, specific to individual plays. The value, then, of paradox in Shakespeare’s four tragicomedies is that they forge boundaries and evoke thought.
The essay is divided into the following sections: Introduction; Tragicomedy, discusses the tragicomic form; Paradox, takes a brief look at the subject of paradox; the discussion …
Don’T Turn That Dial : Advertising, Mass Media, And The God Character In The Novels Of Philip K. Dick, Masha Taborisskaya
Don’T Turn That Dial : Advertising, Mass Media, And The God Character In The Novels Of Philip K. Dick, Masha Taborisskaya
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
“Don’t Turn That Dial: Advertising, Mass Media, and the God Character in the Novels of Philip K. Dick” seeks to explore the Science Fiction (SF) novels of Philip K. Dick through two themes: the parity of divinity and reality and the use of advertising and mass media as a divine tool. These themes are reflected through Dick’s god character, which appears throughout his works. This parallel of reality with divinity means that any character that claims to be able to generate reality is worshipped as a religious figure. In Dick’s novels from the 1960s, there are false god characters which …
Effective Remedies For Ineffective Assistance, Jenia I. Turner
Effective Remedies For Ineffective Assistance, Jenia I. Turner
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
In two recent cases, Missouri v. Frye and Lafler v. Cooper, the Supreme Court affirmed that criminal defendants have a right to competent counsel during plea bargaining. The Court also established that the injury caused by ineffective assistance is not mooted by the subsequent conviction of the defendant at trial. The cases were broadly celebrated for clarifying that the Sixth Amendment applies fully to plea bargaining — the standard process by which our justice system resolves criminal cases today.
The most significant and surprising part of Lafler, however, was the Court’s holding concerning remedies. The Court held that trial courts …

Balancing Human And Machine Contributions In Human Computation Systems, R. Jordan Crouser, Alvitta Ottley, Remco Chang
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
Many interesting and successful human computation systems leverage the complementary computational strengths of both humans and machines to solve these problems. In this chapter, we examine Human Computation as a type of Human-Computer Collaboration—collaboration involving at least one human and at least one computational agent. We discuss recent advances in the open area of function allocation, and explore how to balance the contributions of humans and machines in computational systems. We then explore how human-computer collaborative strategies can be used to solve problems that are difficult or computationally infeasible for computers or humans alone.
Citizen Spouse, Kerry Abrams

Marriage and citizenship have a complicated relationship to one another. Marriage is often the primary way in which a person can exercise and demonstrate his or her identity under law, by claiming legal benefits and by performing legal obligations. This Essay examines the history of one particularly salient example of marriage-as-citizenship — the derivative domicile rule — and uses this history to consider how the relationship between marriage and citizenship has changed and developed over time. The derivative domicile rule linked a woman’s domicile, and her state citizenship along with all the rights and obligations it carried, with her husband’s …

Remaining Silent After Salinas, Brandon L. Garrett
Remaining Silent After Salinas, Brandon L. Garrett

In its ruling last Term in Salinas v Texas, the Supreme Court further eroded what little remains of the Fifth Amendment jurisprudence protecting against coercive police questioning of suspects. In this short piece for the University of Chicago Law Review's online Dialogue, I explore the Salinas decision and its implications. I argue that the result encourages precisely the types of informal, undocumented questioning that can cause false confessions and wrongful convictions.

This Essay, written as part of a Symposium celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Gideon v. Wainwright, focuses on the elaboration of the Gideon right in the context of ineffective assistance of counsel litigation. First, I describe how ineffective assistance of counsel claims came to dominate and define federal habeas corpus litigation, changing the structure of state post-conviction rules in reaction to the new prominence of ineffective assistance of counsel claims at the federal level, expanding to consider assistance of counsel during plea bargaining, and raising complex questions for post-conviction courts. Despite the ubiquity of ineffective assistance of counsel claims, the …
