Measuring Learning Gains In Chemical Education: A Comparison Of Two Methods, Thomas C. Pentecost, Jack Barbera
Measuring Learning Gains In Chemical Education: A Comparison Of Two Methods, Thomas C. Pentecost, Jack Barbera
Peer Reviewed Articles
Evaluating the effect of a pedagogical innovation is often done by looking for a significant difference in a content measure using a pre−post design. While this approach provides valuable information regarding the presence or absence of an effect, it is limited in providing details about the nature of the effect. A measure of the magnitude of the pre−post change, commonly called learning gain, could provide this additional information to chemical education researchers. In this paper, we compare two methods of measuring learning gains using data from large-scale administrations of the Chemical Concepts Inventory at four universities. The intent of this …
Habitat Use Analysis Of A Reintroduced Black Rhino (Diceros Bicornis) Population, John H. Clark
Habitat Use Analysis Of A Reintroduced Black Rhino (Diceros Bicornis) Population, John H. Clark
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Prior to the 20th century black rhinos (Diceros bicornis) were the most prevalent rhino species with population estimates reaching 850,000 individuals (Rhino Resource Center, May 2013). The black rhino underwent the single fastest and most severe decline of all large mammal species from the 1960s to the 1990s, resulting in current population estimates of 3,600 animals (Emslie, 2012; Hillman-Smith and Groves, 1994). Reintroduction efforts are taking place to restore this species and 19 animals were reintroduced to a Kruger Associated Private Nature Reserve, six of these individuals were accessible for study. Animals were monitored on a regular …

Wind Energy Opposition In Vermont: Perspectives On The State's Energy Future, William R. Pitkin Iv
Wind Energy Opposition In Vermont: Perspectives On The State's Energy Future, William R. Pitkin Iv
Pomona Senior Theses
Due to its high levels of concern and awareness of environmental issues, rural character, and sparse population, Vermont would at first glance appear to possess the ideal recipe to become a national leader in renewable energy development. Renewable initiatives have focused primarily on wind energy, as over a dozen wind farms have been proposed in the last few years across the state. However, in spite of the widely held belief in Vermont’s wind energy future, its proponents have run into vehement opposition at every proposed site, often successfully impeding the planned developments.
This report develops a wide-level framework of the …

An Evaluation Of Interactive Test-Driven Labs With Webide In Cs0, David S. Janzen, John Clements, Michael Hilton
Computer Science and Software Engineering
WebIDE is a framework that enables instructors to develop and deliver online lab content with interactive feedback. The ability to create lock-step labs enables the instructor to guide students through learning experiences, demonstrating mastery as they proceed. Feedback is provided through automated evaluators that vary from simple regular expression evaluation to syntactic parsers to applications that compile and run programs and unit tests. This paper describes WebIDE and its use in a CS0 course that taught introductory Java and Android programming using a test-driven learning approach. We report results from a controlled experiment that compared the use of dynamic WebIDE …

Mechanisms Of Nutrient Limitation And Nutrient Acquisition In Managed And Unmanaged Forest Ecosystems, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur
Mechanisms Of Nutrient Limitation And Nutrient Acquisition In Managed And Unmanaged Forest Ecosystems, Matthew A. Vadeboncoeur
Doctoral Dissertations
Understanding the interactions between global change, human and natural disturbances, and other factors on biogeochemical processes in forests is necessary to ensure the sustainability of forest management. Here I report the results of several investigations into nutrient acquisition processes in the forests of New Hampshire. I begin with a meta-analysis of fertilization studies showing that phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) as well as nitrogen (N) may limit primary production in deciduous forests of the region. Because these limiting nutrients are all removed from the ecosystem when trees are harvested, I compared nutrient budgets under a range of harvesting scenarios with …

Play In Place: The Role Of Site-Specific Playgrounds In Community Space, Allison Nkwocha
Play In Place: The Role Of Site-Specific Playgrounds In Community Space, Allison Nkwocha
Scripps Senior Theses
Playgrounds do not have to be static sites, but safety standards should not be the only force that guides their evolution over time. Just as the ongoing transformation of any city is a product of many interwoven factors, the collection of smaller sites that delineates one city from another should reflect the same holistic influences. This is not an argument for the abandonment of the safety standards that influence playground design. Instead, it is an argument for the adoption of and stronger adherence to community standards that influence city design. This paper argues that a park area (and more generally, …
Water Reuse As Part Of San Diego's Water Portfolio, Hillary P. Shipps
Water Reuse As Part Of San Diego's Water Portfolio, Hillary P. Shipps
Scripps Senior Theses
San Diego imports 80 to 90 percent of its water supply, depending on conditions during any particular year. This high level of imports and low diversity of water supply have combined with climate change to generate an urgent need for increased conservation and diversification of San Diego's water supply. Water reuse is one option to mitigate this problem. An attempt was made in the early 1990s to recycle wastewater but the public reacted badly due to a combination of bad public relations, perceived environmental justice issues, and a psychological phenomenon called the yuck factor. With improved public relations and education, …

Probing The Low Temperature Oxidation Of Furanic Biofuels, 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran And 2,5-Dimethylfuran, Utilizing Orthogonal Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry Coupled To Synchrotron Radiation, Matthew Mcmanus
Master's Theses
Concern over natural resources and global climate shifts has increased the focus of sourcing transportation fuels from depleting oil wells to regenerative, biological based solutions. One avenue of biologically sourced fuel involves the extraction of C5 and C6 sugars from the woody, fibrous, and inedible plant materials, otherwise known as lignocellulosic biomass. These cellulosic sugars can be converted to target biofuels and biofuel additives like the furanic compounds, 2,5-dimethylfuran and 2-methylfuran. In this thesis, the low temperature oxidation of two compounds, 2,5-dimethylfuran and 2-methylfuran, are explored. These reactions were conducted at the Advanced Light Source in Berkeley, CA and used …
Intra-Mitochondrial Injury During Ischemia-Reperfusion, Hema Aluri
Intra-Mitochondrial Injury During Ischemia-Reperfusion, Hema Aluri
Theses and Dissertations
Cardiac injury is increased following ischemia-reperfusion. Mitochondria are the “effector organelles” that are damaged during ischemia (ISC) when there is no blood flow. Resumption of metabolism by damaged mitochondria during reperfusion (REP) results in increased cell injury. Current therapeutic interventions to pre-condition and post-condition the heart during ISC are ineffective during certain conditions like aging and diabetes due to defects in the signaling cascades. In contrast, mitochondrial-based strategies are effective in protecting the heart during ISC-REP. Hence direct therapeutic targeting of dysfunctional mitochondria will provide the potential to bypass the upstream signaling defects and intervene directly upon the effector organelle. …
Perceptions Of Loss And Grief Experiences Within Religious Burial And Funeral, Hyacinth C. Okafor
Perceptions Of Loss And Grief Experiences Within Religious Burial And Funeral, Hyacinth C. Okafor
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore perceptions of loss and grief experiences within religious rites and rituals vis-à-vis the context of counseling. Literature indicated the need for a better understanding of grief and loss experiences from bereaved individuals’ perspectives and the context within which loss and grief experiences occur (Dillenburger & Keenan, 2005; Stroebe, Hansson, Schut, & Stroebe, 2008). Participants for this study included 10 purposefully selected Catholic members from two Catholic Church parishes in Nigeria, Africa. All participants had experienced loss and grief, had participated in Catholic burial and funeral rites and rituals, and were …

Tidal Variation In Nitrogen Cycling In Oregon Sponges, Stacia Cowgill, Matthew Creech, Amy Hammerquist
Tidal Variation In Nitrogen Cycling In Oregon Sponges, Stacia Cowgill, Matthew Creech, Amy Hammerquist
Science and Social Sciences
As filter feeders, marine sponges are closely integrated with their environment. Sponges also host many diverse species of bacteria that carry out a gamut of metabolic processes, including several nitrogen transformations. The variable nature of tidal exchanges can influence the biogeochemicals available for the sponge and its associated microbes to obtain from the environment. As ambient nutrient concentrations change, it is suggested that the pumping rates of the sponge will change, thus altering the activity of the symbionts. To explore these hypotheses, ambient and exhalent water samples were collected at both high tide and low tide in Netarts Bay, Oregon. …
Computational Studies Of Protein Folding, Addison Wisthoff
Computational Studies Of Protein Folding, Addison Wisthoff
Science and Social Sciences
Proteins are known to fold to tertiary structures that determine the functionality of the protein in living organisms. The goal of our research is to better understand the protein folding process and to see if protein folding is a self-organized critical process. There are many different examples of self-organized criticality in nature, such as sand piles and earthquakes. Using MATLAB, we create an algorithm that models the folding process via a Monte Carlo time step approach. Specifically, amino acids in the chain at each time step are allowed to fold to certain locations according to a set of rules. We …
Mapping The Beta-Sheet Structure Of The Yeast Prion Sup35 Through Creation Of Targeted Mutant Forms, Emily K. Davis, James D. Knox, Daniel Palacios
Mapping The Beta-Sheet Structure Of The Yeast Prion Sup35 Through Creation Of Targeted Mutant Forms, Emily K. Davis, James D. Knox, Daniel Palacios
Science and Social Sciences
Proteins with an aggregated form rich in beta-sheet structure are known as amyloids, of which a subset are infectious. These infectious proteins are known as prions and cause diseases including bovine spongiform encephalopathy (“Mad Cow” disease). Several prions have been identified in the baker’s yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. One of the most well-studied yeast prions is the protein Sup35. To understand the fine protein structure of Sup35 better, we used PCR-based mutagenesis to introduce a lysine residue (a charged amino acid) at five defined places in the protein sequence of Sup35. We describe our process for creating these mutant versions and …
