Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

A new model coupling scheme with remote sensing data assimilation was developed for estimation of daily actual evapotranspiration (ET). The scheme consists of the VegET, a model to estimate ET from meteorological and water balance data, and an Event Driven Phenology Model (EDPM), an empirical crop specific model trained on multiple years of flux tower data transformed into six types of environmental forcings that are called “events” to emphasize their temporally discrete character, which has advantages for modeling multiple contingent influences. The EDPM in prognostic mode supplies seasonal trajectories of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI); whereas in diagnostic mode, it …

Identifying Common Pressure Pathways From A Complex Network Of Human Activities To Support Ecosystem-Based Management, Am Knights, Rs Koss, La Robinson Jun 2013

Identifying Common Pressure Pathways From A Complex Network Of Human Activities To Support Ecosystem-Based Management, Am Knights, Rs Koss, La Robinson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The marine environment is heavily exploited, but unintentional consequences cause wide‐ranging negative effects to its characteristics. Linkage frameworks (e.g., DPSIR [driver–pressure–state–impact–response]) are commonly used to describe an interaction between human activities and ecological characteristics of the ecosystem, but as each linkage is viewed independently, the diversity of pressures that affect those characteristics may not be identified or managed effectively. Here we demonstrate an approach for using linkages to build a simple network to capture the complex relationships arising from multiple sectors and their activities. Using data‐analysis tools common to ecology, we show how linkages can be placed into mechanistically similar …

Genetic And Molecular Analysis Of The Maize R1 Locus, Jennifer Derkits Jun 2013

Genetic And Molecular Analysis Of The Maize R1 Locus, Jennifer Derkits

Theses and Dissertations

Canalization, the stability of phenotypes in the presence of a specific genotype and environment is important for trait selection and understanding gene expression pathways. The goal of this study was to investigate mechanisms involved in the loss of canalization at the maize r1 locus. A specific lightly colored R-sc derivative, R-sc:86-17(L), was mutagenized with ethyl methyl sulfonate (EMS), and the progeny screened for restoration of dark seed color and canalization. Putative revertants/mutants were mapped relative to the r1 locus, tested for complementation to each other to identify a minimum number of genes involved in canalization, tested for cis silencing of …

Identification Of Cisplatin-Binding Proteins Using Agarose Conjugates Of Platinum Compounds, Takatoshi Karasawa, Martha Sibrian-Vazquez, Robert M. Strongin, Peter S. Steyger Jun 2013

Identification Of Cisplatin-Binding Proteins Using Agarose Conjugates Of Platinum Compounds, Takatoshi Karasawa, Martha Sibrian-Vazquez, Robert M. Strongin, Peter S. Steyger

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Cisplatin is widely used as an antineoplastic drug, but its ototoxic and nephrotoxic side-effects, as well as the inherent or acquired resistance of some cancers to cisplatin, remain significant clinical problems. Cisplatin’s selectivity in killing rapidly proliferating cancer cells is largely dependent on covalent binding to DNA via cisplatin’s chloride sites that had been aquated. We hypothesized that cisplatin’s toxicity in slowly proliferating or terminally differentiated cells is primarily due to drug-protein interactions, instead of drug-DNA binding. To identify proteins that bind to cisplatin, we synthesized two different platinum-agarose conjugates, one with two amino groups and another with two chlorides …

Science Fiction And The Myth Of Trajectory Evolution, Jocelyn D. Pickreign Jun 2013

Science Fiction And The Myth Of Trajectory Evolution, Jocelyn D. Pickreign

The Macalester Review

Stephen Jay Gould first proposed the idea of “iconographies of progress.” Today, one of the most prominent forms of progress iconography is the science fiction story. Science fiction as a genre frequently portrays evolution as a linear trajectory of increasing complexity, and in doing so, furthers a worldview that is not unlike the pre-Darwin understanding of human beings as both the center and the pinnacle of the natural world.

Phenoxathiin was prepared by the reaction of diphenyl ether with sulfur in the presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride. This work comprised the synthesis of new phenoxathiin derivatives containing heterocyclic moieties. These heterocyclic compounds were synthesized in three groups. The first group was made up of 2-(oxoalken-1-yl) phenoxathiin derivatives (3a-3j) obtained from the reaction of 2-acetylphenoxathiin with different aromatic aldehyde in the presence of sodium hydroxide. The other two groups involved compounds produced from the reaction of (3a-3j) with hydrazine hydrate in acetic acid to get 2-(1-acetyl pyrazolin-3-yl) phenoxathiin derivatives (4a-4j), and phenyl hydrazine in the presence of piperidine to afford …

Parental Factors Affecting Schools Drop-Outs In Egypt, Margaret Varoujan Jun 2013

Parental Factors Affecting Schools Drop-Outs In Egypt, Margaret Varoujan

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study is to shed light on the parental factors that affect children’s education in Egypt in terms of access and completion of the basic education level. Schooling increases at first as children enroll, but then it declines as some children start to drop-out after a few years. Dropping-out of school and the existence of child labor are consequences of poverty. Parental education has been found to be a major factor behind the children’s schooling and child labor decision. Low returns to education impose a further challenge to the household decision on schooling. Education in Egypt had …

Cultural Appeal: The Hard Attribute Of A Soft Trans-Ideology, Viorella Manolache, Henrieta A. Serban Jun 2013

Cultural Appeal: The Hard Attribute Of A Soft Trans-Ideology, Viorella Manolache, Henrieta A. Serban

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

The study investigates feminism, still based both on the arguments of socialism and liberalism, but also maintained as an alternative-cultural realm. This working hypothesis is tested from a philosophical perspective, in relation to several authors and theoretical frames, situating specificity and the threat of marginalization in the light of modernism, postmodernism and trans-modernism. If, ideologically, the terrain of feminisms seems mined by the theory of the control of the intervention spaces, recognizing only the victory of passing from episodic to structural importance, the cultural place of the feminisms remains a strongly individualized manifestation. Only in solidarity and within a cultural …

Recreation Displacement Of Bass Fishermen From Central Coast Lakes, Erin Gray

Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration

The purpose of this study was to assess the impacts of aquatic invasive species preventative measures on recreation displacement of bass fishermen from Central Coast lakes. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to participants at a local bass fishing tournament. Thirty-six respondents completed the questionnaire. The results indicated that boat inspection procedures do not necessarily cause bass fishermen to displace. This study found that fishermen are likely to avoid recreating at a Central Coast lake in fishing practice conditions rather than in tournament conditions, and are likely to avoid tournaments at their least favorite lake if boat inspection procedures take too …
