At The Full And Change Of The Moon: The Passing Down Of Cultural Memory In The Black Diaspora, Anh Hua Jul 2013

At The Full And Change Of The Moon: The Passing Down Of Cultural Memory In The Black Diaspora, Anh Hua

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Referring to the Holocaust, James Young argues that historians mistakenly make a forced distinction between memory and history, where history is defined as that which happened and memory as that which is remembered of what happened. This leaves no room for the survivor’s voice and the survivor’s memory of the events, whose value is lost to the historians. James Young is interested in bridging the gap between a survivor’s “deep memory” and historical narrative, how to remember the past as it passes from living memory to history (276-277). Historical inquiry, for Young, is understood as “the combined study …

Review Of The Warcraft Civilization, By William Sims Bainbridge, Anthony T. Sansone

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The evolving complexity of video games in narrative, gameplay and technology has steadily pulled researchers from game studies and other disciplines into examinations of games and what they say about our culture. Some examine what games say about players and what their activity says about them as part of society. Others explore what the game itself reflects about our culture; how a specific game can, could or does affect our society.

Crosstalk Between Adipocytes And Immune Cells In Adipose Tissue In An Obese Inflammatory State: Role Of Contact-Mediated Signaling, Carolina Franco Nitta

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Obesity is defined as heightened fat accumulation leading to health impairments. It has been directly correlated to cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes mellitus, and cancer. Heightened cytokine levels are found in serum and adipose tissue of obese subjects, including TNFα (tumor necrosis factor alpha), IL-6 (interleukin-6), and MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1), being characterized as a chronic low-grade inflammatory disease. In this dissertation, I have generated a novel co-culture model between adipocytes and immune cells (derived from splenocytes) that mimics inflammation seen in obese adipose tissue. This co-culture model allows for distinct evaluation between secreted paracrine factors (indirect cultures) and these …

The Immunological Mechanisms Of Influenza Vaccination: A Comparison Between A Seasonal Subunit Vaccine And An H5n1 Subunit Vaccine With And Without Alum Adjuvant, Sarah Elizabeth Vaughan Jul 2013

The Immunological Mechanisms Of Influenza Vaccination: A Comparison Between A Seasonal Subunit Vaccine And An H5n1 Subunit Vaccine With And Without Alum Adjuvant, Sarah Elizabeth Vaughan

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 is an emerging infectious virus with a 60% fatality rate in humans. In the United States, a vaccine for H5N1 has been developed and stockpiled using FDA approved methods for seasonal vaccines; however, the H5N1 vaccine was shown to be less immunogenic than seasonal vaccines when evaluated in clinical trials. Adjuvants can be used to enhance the immune response to antigens. For the studies described herein, a lethal mouse model of H5N1 infection was utilized to examine the immune response to the H5N1 vaccine with and without the addition of an alum adjuvant, and …

Visual Activity Evoked By Infrared In Humans After Dark Adaptation, Leslie Olivia Hopkins Jul 2013

Visual Activity Evoked By Infrared In Humans After Dark Adaptation, Leslie Olivia Hopkins

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

We evaluated the visual response to infrared (IR) in humans after dark adaptation. In seven adult participants, visual perception, visual sensitivity, and the visual response to IR after light adaptation were tested. Over the course of dark adaptation, we found visual perception and sensitivity to our experimental IR stimulus increased, while the relative IR intensity necessary for perception decreased. Visual perception of the IR stimulus was abolished during a transient light exposure; however, when turned back off, perception to the IR stimulus returned for all participants. These novel findings may be relevant for both pre-clinical and clinical visual research.

Development Of Cd19 Binding Reagents For Targeted Nanoparticles, Jason Hugh Rogers Jul 2013

Development Of Cd19 Binding Reagents For Targeted Nanoparticles, Jason Hugh Rogers

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

B-cell malignancies like Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL), which often have high numbers of malignant cells in circulation in the blood would be an excellent model system for the early preclinical development and testing of targeted small particle therapeutics. We selected the transmembrane protein CD19 (Cluster of Differentiation 19) as one potential promising target due to its remarkably common over-expression on nearly every case of B-ALL, and on many other types of leukemias and lymphomas with varying frequency. We attempted to create a panel of appropriate CD19-specific targeting reagents for attachment to the surface of perhaps many different small particle platforms …

Angular Cheilitis: A Maligned Condition., Caren Campbell, Lawrence Parish Jul 2013

Angular Cheilitis: A Maligned Condition., Caren Campbell, Lawrence Parish

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Why an essay on angular cheilitis, an easily recognized cutaneous entity? One suggestion rests with the observation that angular cheilitis could be one of the most maligned conditions seen in contemporary practice. The fissuring, redness, and soreness at the angles of the mouth may not be catastrophic, but the embarrassment and soreness are disconcerting. Another that is more disturbing concerns the unnecessary testing and treatment often seen in the community.

When a middle aged man presented with angular cheilitis on routine examination, he asked if this was due to a vitamin deficiency. Fig 1 He had been told by a …

Elastomeric Capture Microparticles (Ecµps) And Their Use With Acoustophoresis To Perform Affinity Capture Assays, Kevin Wallace Cushing Jul 2013

Elastomeric Capture Microparticles (Ecµps) And Their Use With Acoustophoresis To Perform Affinity Capture Assays, Kevin Wallace Cushing

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

This dissertation describes the development of elastomeric capture microparticles (ECµPs) and their use with acoustophoresis to perform affinity capture assays. ECµPs that function as negative acoustic contrast particles were developed by crosslinking emulsion-based droplets composed of commercially available silicone precursors followed by functionalization with avidin/biotin reagents. The size distribution of the ECµPs was very broad or narrow depending on the emulsion system that was used during the synthesis process. Elastomeric particles exhibited a very broad size distribution when a bulk-emulsion process was used; however, when microfluidic systems were utilized, their size distribution became comparatively narrow. The functionalization of elastomeric particles …

Contested Knowledges: A Rhetorical Analysis Of 'Eclipses For Austin' By Pablo Vargas Lugo At The Intersection Of Art And Science, Carlos Rodrigo Guzman

Communication ETDs

The debate on whether art has any cognitive value might be traced to the texts of early philosophers and theorists who have approached the matter. In general, art has been constrained to contemplation and aesthetic experience while its contribution to knowledge is often disregarded. Science, on the other hand, constitutes the main system of organized knowledge production and enunciation. Contemporary artistic practices that address scientific knowledge tend to reformulate the latter in order to either produce new experiences with it or expand its cognitive capabilities. The works produced by these practices serve as artifacts that expose science's biases, axiomatic tenets, …

Public Perceptions On Lgbt Issues In Modern Vietnam, Yen Hoang Ha

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This paper examines the history, culture, and policies in Vietnam as fundamentals for an analysis on one of the most emerging topics in the modern Vietnamese society: the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. I have collected data from opinions and comments on different means of social media as representation of public opinion toward LGBT, which seem to most expressed in three aspects: lack of knowledge, stereotype, and prejudice; the categorization and labeling as Third World; and advocacy for LGBT equality. With the quite strict tradition and high stress on family ties, the challenge for the members of this …

Geographic Patterns Of Early Holocene New World Dental Morphological Variation, Christopher Stojanowski, Kent Johnson, William N. Duncan Jul 2013

Geographic Patterns Of Early Holocene New World Dental Morphological Variation, Christopher Stojanowski, Kent Johnson, William N. Duncan

ETSU Faculty Works

Dental anthropology played a seminal role in early studies of the peopling of the New World, and was a foundation of the early three wave model proposed by Greenberg, Turner and Zegura. In recent years, however, developments in anthropological genetics, craniometry, and archaeological discoveries have largely omit-ted dental anthropology from debates regarding Native American origins. Here we consider this situation and reassert dental anthropology's relevance to the topic by presenting an inter-individual analysis of Paleoindian and Paleoamerican dentitions. A small set of dental morphological variables was used to estimate Gower similarity coefficients between individual specimens. The resulting similarity matrix was …

Investigating The Possible Sources Of Error Using The Method Of Moments To Solve A Dielectric Scattering Problem, Phillip D. Bishop Jul 2013

Investigating The Possible Sources Of Error Using The Method Of Moments To Solve A Dielectric Scattering Problem, Phillip D. Bishop

Master's Theses (2009 -)

In an electromagnetic scattering problem, an incoming electromagnetic wave interacts with an object. The object is typically located in some medium, such as free space. When this electromagnetic wave becomes incident upon the object, the wave scatters. The goal of this work is to analyze the scattered fields for three different incoming wave types: a plane wave, a monopole line source, and a multipole line source. Each source is incident on an infinitely long circular cylinder of lossless dielectric material. Each source has a unique scattering characteristic.

The volume equivalence principle is used to replace the object geometry with mathematically …

Intrinsic Religiosity And Adolescent Depression And Anxiety: The Mediating Role Of Components Of Self-Regulation, Brent Charles Black Jul 2013

Intrinsic Religiosity And Adolescent Depression And Anxiety: The Mediating Role Of Components Of Self-Regulation, Brent Charles Black

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the possible mediating role of the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive components of self-regulation as they relate to adolescent intrinsic religiosity and the internalizing problems of teen depression and anxiety. The sample included 459 adolescent respondents from one wave of the Flourishing Families Project, an ongoing longitudinal study. Through the use of Structural Equation Modeling, results showed that cognitive self-regulation partially mediated the relationship between intrinsic religiosity and adolescent depression. Additionally, emotional self-regulation, but not behavioral self-regulation was found to be negatively linked with both depression and anxiety. These findings provide clinicians with greater direction when working with …

An Investigation Into Land Use Changes And Consequences In The Northern Great Plains Using Systems Thinking And Dynamics, B.L. Turner, R. Gates, M. Wuellner, B. H. Dunn, L. O. Tedeschi

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

From 1997 to 2007, 9.6 million hectares of grassland were converted to cropland and fifty seven percent of these conversions occurred in the Northern Great Plains (NGP). Since 2007, another 9.5 million U.S. hectares have been converted with the majority located in the NGP. Shortterm, positive benefits include increased food production and higher financial returns to farmers. However, there could be unintended consequences through loss of ecosystem services. Consequences may include compromised water quality, wildlife habitat loss/fragmentation, and decreased carbon sequestration. The principal objective of this work is to: 1) identify structural features influencing land use decisions through agricultural stakeholder …

Laughney, Pilar Beatriz García-Allende, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Wendy A. Wells, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue, Jose M. Lopez-Higuera, Olga M. Conde

Dartmouth Scholarship

Breast tumors are blindly identified using Principal (PCA) and Independent Component Analysis (ICA) of localized reflectance measurements. No assumption of a pa rticular theoretical model for the reflectance needs to be made, while the re sulting features are proven to have discriminative power of breast pathologies. Normal, benign and malignant breast tissue types in lumpect omy specimens were imaged ex vivo and a surgeon-guided calibration of the system is proposed to overcome the limitations of the blind analysis. A simple, fast and linear classifier has been proposed where no training information is required for the diagnosis. A set of 29 …

Development Of A Physiologic Ex Vivo Vessel Perfusion System., Mitchell J. Buller Jul 2013

Development Of A Physiologic Ex Vivo Vessel Perfusion System., Mitchell J. Buller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Over time, continuous flow ventricular assist devices (VADs) have become the primary form of implanted mechanical circulatory support (MCS) due to their smaller size, higher energy efficiency, longer durability, and fewer LVAD-related complications when compared to pulsatile flow VADs. However, continuous and pulsatile flows may elicit different cellular and tissue response, particularly in the arterial vasculature, which could have a profound impact on the future operation of MCS devices. Therefore, a unique ex vivo perfusion system integrated with a mock adult circulatory system was design to study the impact of VAD-generated flow patterns on vascular function. Methods: The benefits …

Surface Bound Peg-Rgds On Peg-Da Hydrogels And Its Effects On Rpe Cell Morphology And Differentiation., Jeremy E. Phillips

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Age related macular Degeneration is a retinal condition resulting in visual impairment and central vision loss caused by dysfunction of the Bruch’s membrane and the retinal-pigmented epithelium. . A novel treatment idea proposes that these layers may be repaired through replacement using a synthetic Bruch’s membrane, such as modified poly(ethylene glycol) commonly known as PEG, allowing regrowth of the RPE layer in vivo or through inclusion of a functioning RPE layer when implanting the membrane. Modifying poly(ethylene glycol) with surface bound adhesion peptides such as RGDS provides an excellent biomaterial scaffold in which RPE cells may repopulate and regain their …

State Incentives For Innovation, Star Scientists, And Jobs: Evidence From Biotech, Enrico Moretti, Daniel J. Wilson

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We evaluate the effects of state-provided financial incentives for biotech companies, which are part of a growing trend of placed-based policies designed to spur innovation clusters. We estimate that the adoption of subsidies for biotech employers by a state raises the number of star biotech scientists in that state by about 15 percent over a three-year period. A 10 percent decline in the user cost of capital induced by an increase in R&D tax incentives raises the number of stars by 22 percent. Most of the gains are due to the relocation of star scientists to adopting states, with limited …
