Secondary Organic Aerosols Over Oceans Via Oxidation Of Isoprene And Monoterpenes From Arctic To Antarctic, Qi-Hou Hu, Zhou-Qing Xie, Xin-Ming Wang, Hui Kang, Quan-Fu He, Pengfei Zhang Jul 2013

Secondary Organic Aerosols Over Oceans Via Oxidation Of Isoprene And Monoterpenes From Arctic To Antarctic, Qi-Hou Hu, Zhou-Qing Xie, Xin-Ming Wang, Hui Kang, Quan-Fu He, Pengfei Zhang

Publications and Research

Isoprene and monoterpenes are important precursors of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in continents. However, their contributions to aerosols over oceans are still inconclusive. Here we analyzed SOA tracers from isoprene and monoterpenes in aerosol samples collected over oceans during the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Research Expeditions. Combined with literature reports elsewhere, we found that the dominant tracers are the oxidation products of isoprene. The concentrations of tracers varied considerably. The mean average values were approximately one order of magnitude higher in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere. High values were generally observed in coastal regions. This phenomenon was …

Content Analysis Of Cognitive Distortions In Pedophiles' Online Forum Posts, Lyndsie Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Historically, sexual encounters between adults and children were rarely reported to authorities, and thus considered a rare problem. However, as many as 33% of girls and 14% of boys experience sexual encounters with adults and as a result may experience consequences such as aversive feelings regarding the act of sex, substance abuse, and self-mutilation. Such consequences lead research to examine pedophile's cognitive distortions. This exploratory study examined pedophiles' website forum posts to determine if any posters demonstrated cognitive distortions. Four independent raters used content analysis to determine which cognitive distortions were demonstrated by the examined pedophiles. Results suggested that cognitive …

30 Days In The Life: Daily Nutrient Balancing In A Wild Chacma Baboon, Caley A. Johnson, David Raubenheimer, Jessica M. Rothman, David Clarke, Larissa Swedell

Publications and Research

For most animals, the ability to regulate intake of specific nutrients is vital to fitness. Recent studies have demonstrated nutrient regulation in nonhuman primates over periods of one observation day, though studies of humans indicate that such regulation extends to longer time frames. Little is known about longer-term regulation in nonhuman primates, however, due to the challenges of multiple-day focal follows. Here we present the first detailed study of nutrient intake across multiple days in a wild nonhuman primate. We conducted 30 consecutive all day follows on one female chacma baboon (Papio hamadryas ursinus) in the Cape Peninsula of South …

The Economic Impact Of Veteran Status: The Effect Of Veteran And Demographic Statuses On Household Income, Danielle Standridge

Dissertations and Theses

Determining the effects of military service on those who volunteer is of vital importance in an age when service may lead to the loss of bodily function or life. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of military service with consideration for the demographic statuses of race, gender, and educational attainment on economic outcomes. Data for this study came from the Current Population Survey July 2010 with Veterans Supplement (N=83,000). Results from this study suggest that some veterans, namely those of minority racial status and lower educational attainment benefit from their military serve by achieving increased levels …

Sepsis is a common cause of death, but outcomes in individual patients are difficult to predict. Elucidating the molecular processes that differ between sepsis patients who survive and those who die may permit more appropriate treatments to be deployed. We examined the clinical features and the plasma metabolome and proteome of patients with and without community-acquired sepsis, upon their arrival at hospital emergency departments and 24 hours later. The metabolomes and proteomes of patients at hospital admittance who would ultimately die differed markedly from those of patients who would survive. The different profiles of proteins and metabolites clustered into the …

Transposon Fingerprinting Using Low Coverage Whole Genome Shotgun Sequencing In Cacao (Theobroma Cacao L.) And Related Species, Saemundur Sveinsson, Navdeep Gill, Nolan Kane, Quentin Cronk

Biology Faculty Articles

Background

Transposable elements (TEs) and other repetitive elements are a large and dynamically evolving part of eukaryotic genomes, especially in plants where they can account for a significant proportion of genome size. Their dynamic nature gives them the potential for use in identifying and characterizing crop germplasm. However, their repetitive nature makes them challenging to study using conventional methods of molecular biology. Next generation sequencing and new computational tools have greatly facilitated the investigation of TE variation within species and among closely related species.

Results

(i) We generated low-coverage Illumina whole genome shotgun sequencing reads for multiple individuals of cacao …

Understanding and predicting the effects of deer (Cervidae) on forest ecosystems present significant challenges in ecosystem ecology. Deer herbivory can cause large changes in the biomass and species composition of forest understory plant communities, including early life-cycle trees (i.e., seedlings and saplings). Such changes can impact juvenile to adult transitions and the future age structure and species composition of mature forests. Changes to understory vegetation also impact flow of energy and nutrients in forest ecosystems. Studies examining the influence of deer on mature trees, however, are rare and rely on extrapolating effects from early life cycle stages of trees. We …

Characterization Of Cyclic Di-Gmp Binding By The Sole Borrelia Burgdorferi And Borrelia Hermsii Pilz Domain-Containing Proteins, Katherine Louise Mallory Jul 2013

Characterization Of Cyclic Di-Gmp Binding By The Sole Borrelia Burgdorferi And Borrelia Hermsii Pilz Domain-Containing Proteins, Katherine Louise Mallory

Theses and Dissertations

Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia hermsii cause Lyme disease and relapsing fever, respectively. These spirochetes are maintained in an enzootic cycle, involving tick vectors and mammalian hosts. Differential gene expression is central in their survival in various environmental conditions. C-di-GMP has been demonstrated to be important in bacterial adaptation. Borrelia deletion mutant phenotypes have shown that c-di-GMP regulates motility, infectivity, and enzootic cycle progression. As the only known receptors encoded by Borrelia, PlzA and PlzC characterization is necessary in delineating c-di-GMP roles within the cell. In this study, biochemical, biophysical, and FRET methods demonstrated that these proteins exhibit a structural rearrangement …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Iron Oxide-Gold Core-Shell Nanoparticles In Different Shapes, Saheel Dilip Bhana

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Hybrid nanomaterials possessing dual magnetic/optical properties are of considerable interest to many areas, ranging from material science to medicine and biology. They are promising for a broad range of applications including catalysis, energy conversion, biological separation, medical diagnosis and treatment. Anisotropic magnetic-optical nanoparticles give better or new properties compared to spherical ones due to their high curvature and polarization-sensitive geometry. However, the engineering of compact and uniform anisotropic magnetic-optical core-shell nanoparticles remains a major challenge. The work in this thesis is aimed at the preparation and characterization of magnetic-optical core-shell hybrid NPs in different shapes and sizes. Iron oxide-gold core-shell …

Electron Spin Resonance Studies Of Uv-And X-Ray Irradiated Poly (Ether Ether Ketone), Tayebeh Riahinasab

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

PEEK (polyether ether ketone) is a biocompatible, semicrystalline thermoplastic that is mechanically strong and thermally stable; it is also generally considered to be radiation resistant. Interactions of PEEK with radiation, such as X-ray and UV, may bring chemical changes such as from the simultaneous occurrence of crosslinking and chain scission, which may also impact on the macroscopic properties of material. Past research work on PEEK is concentrated mostly on the study of the effect of energetic radiations like gamma-irradiation and electron beam radiation. In a recent study, Awaja et al. detected free radicals in plasma-treated PEEK at room temperature. The …

Representations Of Women In Casta Paintings Of Colonial Mexico, Lacie Ellen Glover

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Representations of Women in Casta Paintings of Colonial Mexico explores the power relations between men and women represented in casta paintings of the eighteenth century. I provide an overview of the genre of casta painting and its relation to the sistema de castas, the social arrangement based on lineages intended to sustain the power of the Spanish elite. I examine how casta scenes reinforce the authority of the Spanish male. The social construction of gender, separate spheres of men and women, and the notion of "true womanhood" are recurrent themes. I argue that casta scenes reinforced the expected norms of …

In this paper, we investigate conditions for the existence of positive solution to the following general elliptic system with various growth conditions: {Δu + u(a + g(u, v)) = 0 Δv + v(d + h(u, v)) = 0 u|∂ω=v|∂ω=0 in ω. Our arguments mainly rely on super-sub solutions, maximum principles, spectrum estimates, and some detailed properties for the solution of logistic equations. © 2013 Academic Publications, Ltd.

Ethics Of Shared Decision-Making For Advanced Heart Failure Patients, Catherine Lauridsen Rn, Bsn Jul 2013

Ethics Of Shared Decision-Making For Advanced Heart Failure Patients, Catherine Lauridsen Rn, Bsn

Journal of Health Ethics

This article argues that caregivers have an ethical duty to ensure that shared decision making and palliative care measures are fully discussed with and understood by their advanced heart failure patients. This is not a trivial issue. Heart failure is reaching epidemic proportions, while advances in treatment options available for heart failure patients have made it possible to prolong the life of many patients. The potential benefits and burdens of available treatments must be clearly understood by the heart failure patient so the patient can make decisions consistent with his or her values and wishes. However, too often patients are …

Preventive Nutrition In Nazi Germany: A Public Health Commentary, Basil H. Aboul-Enein Msc, Mph, Ma

Journal of Health Ethics

Nazi medicine invokes images of horrific experiments carried out by SS (Schutzstaffel) doctors like Josef Mengele in the concentration camps. Against this background of atrocity visited on some populations, the contributions made by Nazi public health activists and food philosophers were considered one of the most aggressive public health movements in the world. Nazi public health promotion and education were involved in activities that we might today view as socially responsible within the fields of preventive medicine. The dietetic sciences may be regarded as one of the least examined aspects of public health during the period of the Third Reich. …

Terminator Technology: Appraising Biotechnologists’ Claim To Feed The World, Jonathan Okeke Chimakonam Ph.D. Jul 2013

Terminator Technology: Appraising Biotechnologists’ Claim To Feed The World, Jonathan Okeke Chimakonam Ph.D.

Journal of Health Ethics

This paper has shown that the feed the world argument as the main justification for the application of biotechnology/genetic engineering to the mainstream of agriculture has collapsed vis-à-vis the “terminator” or the “traitor” technology. Financial gain has also been established as the main motive for the promoters of this technology. In doing this, we have raised health and ethical concerns because it has been shown among others that applying GM on food crop production could have unforeseen health consequences. This we argued out-weighs financial benefits and called for caution and censorship in the application of biotechnology to food crop production.

Early Inflorescence Development In The Grasses (Poaceae), Elizabeth Kellogg, Paulo Camara, Paula Rudall, Philip Ladd, Simon Malcomber, Clinton Whipple, Andrew Doust

Biology Department Faculty Works

The shoot apical meristem of grasses produces the primary branches of the inflorescence, controlling inflorescence architecture and hence seed production. Whereas leaves are produced in a distichous pattern, with the primordia separated from each other by an angle of 180◦, inflorescence branches are produced in a spiral in most species. The morphology and developmental genetics of the shift in phyllotaxis have been studied extensively in maize and rice. However, in wheat, Brachypodium, and oats, all in the grass subfamily Pooideae, the change in phyllotaxis does not occur; primary inflorescence branches are produced distichously. It is unknown whether the distichous inflorescence …
