Female Rats Display Enhanced Rewarding Effects Of Ethanol That Are Hormone Dependent, Laura O'Dell Aug 2013

Female Rats Display Enhanced Rewarding Effects Of Ethanol That Are Hormone Dependent, Laura O'Dell

Departmental Papers (Psych)

Background: Ethanol (EtOH) abuse is a major health and economic concern, particularly for females who appear to be more sensitive to the rewarding effects of EtOH. This study compared sex differences to the rewarding and aversive effects of EtOH using place-conditioning procedures in rats. Methods: Separate groups of adult (male, female, ovariectomized [OVX] female) and adolescent (male and female) rats received EtOH (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 or 2.5 g/kg; i.p.) and were confined to their initially nonpreferred side of our conditioning apparatus for 30 minutes. On alternate days, they received saline and were confined to the other side. Following 5 …

The Importance Of Epigenetic Phenomena In Regulating Activity Of The Genetic Material, Sin Chan Aug 2013

The Importance Of Epigenetic Phenomena In Regulating Activity Of The Genetic Material, Sin Chan

Senior Honors Projects

Genetics has taught us that genes are represented as discrete sequences within a larger DNA molecule found embedded within the chromosomes of a living cell. Collectively these chromosomes and their associated genes carry all of the instructions for life. Until recently, the prevailing thought has been that genes are destiny in the life of an individual since the genes carry the information that determines the general traits and characteristics associated with that individual. The relatively recent understanding of mechanisms that underlie epigenetic phenomena has led to a rethinking of this concept. Epigenetics describes cellular mechanisms that explain how two individuals …

This study examined the benefits of using animal assisted therapy student behavior/concentration to read and their motivation to read. Research was conducted in the students’ homes with the use of a certified therapy dog during reading and writing activities. Data was collected through observations, student and parent questionnaires, and examination and analysis of student work samples. The findings show that the presence of a therapy dog can improve student behavior/concentration to read and write as well as motivation to read and write. Therapy dogs should be used in addition to everyday instruction as a behavioral management tool and motivator for …

Science Fictional Transcendentalism In The Work Of Robert Smithson, Eric Saxon Aug 2013

Science Fictional Transcendentalism In The Work Of Robert Smithson, Eric Saxon

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

In studies of American artist Robert Smithson (1938-1973), scholars often set the artist’s early abstract expressionist and Christian iconographical paintings apart from the rest of his body of work, characterizing this early phase as a youthful encounter with the enduring legacy of abstract expressionism in the late 1950s to early 1960s as well as a temporary preoccupation with ritualized Catholic imagery. This thesis argues for the inclusion of this early phase into Smithson’s career as a foundational period in which he established the set of problems that artistically engaged him throughout his life: issues of temporality, materiality, and universal entropy. …

The expansion, referred to as greater Ord Stage 2 has identified land along the lower Ord (Packsaddle, West Bank, Carlton Station and Mantinea), the Cockatoo Sands, as well as the Weaber, Keep River and Knox Creek Plains as suitable for development. The current development of the Weaber and Knox Creek Plains, referred to as the M2 Supply Area, will increase the current area under irrigation from 14,000 to potentially 30, 500 …

Ion Competition In Condensed Dna Arrays In The Attractive Regime, Xiangyun Qiu, John Giannini, Steven C. Howell, Qi Xia, Fuyou Ke, Kurt Andresen Aug 2013

Ion Competition In Condensed Dna Arrays In The Attractive Regime, Xiangyun Qiu, John Giannini, Steven C. Howell, Qi Xia, Fuyou Ke, Kurt Andresen

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Physical origin of DNA condensation by multivalent cations remains unsettled. Here, we report quantitative studies of how one DNA-condensing ion (Cobalt3+ Hexammine, or Co3+Hex) and one nonDNA-condensing ion (Mg2+) compete within the interstitial space in spontaneously condensed DNA arrays. As the ion concentrations in the bath solution are systematically varied, the ion contents and DNA-DNA spacings of the DNA arrays are determined by atomic emission spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction, respectively. To gain quantitative insights, we first compare the experimentally determined ion contents with predictions from exact numerical calculations based on nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equations. Such calculations …

The Imposition Of The Ego: Jean-Paul Sartre And The Cinematic Apparatus, James Driscoll Aug 2013

The Imposition Of The Ego: Jean-Paul Sartre And The Cinematic Apparatus, James Driscoll

College of Communication Theses and Dissertations

This thesis applies Jean-Paul Sartre’s early philosophy of consciousness and ego to two main concepts of Jean-Louis Baudry’s theory of the cinematic apparatus. The first of these concepts, the “transcendental subject,” is denoted by Baudry as the conflation of Cartesian philosophy and technology which ensures the transmission of representational knowledge in line with a historically dominant optical ideology. Since Sartre criticizes the transcendental phenomenology of Husserl in ways similar to Baudry’s work, his structures and levels of consciousness apply well to the enforced cohesion of the transcendental subject, and impart a hitherto lacking cohesion to the concept. Following from a …

Symposium – Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy And Offspring Health Outcomes: The Role Of Epignetic Research In Informal Legal Policy And Practice, Taylor F. Smith, Matthew A. Maccani, Valerie S. Knopik Aug 2013

Symposium – Maternal Smoking During Pregnancy And Offspring Health Outcomes: The Role Of Epignetic Research In Informal Legal Policy And Practice, Taylor F. Smith, Matthew A. Maccani, Valerie S. Knopik

UC Law Journal

Scientific advances in epidemiology and epigenetics emphasize the importance of prenatal and intergenerational environmental influences and epigenetic regulation in altering vulnerability for later health outcomes. These findings may have wide-ranging legal implications; however, to avoid misapplication, a thorough understanding of the scientific literature and legal precedent is warranted. A growing body of literature suggests that negative health outcomes associated with prenatal smoke exposure may result, in part, from aberrant epigenetic regulation of gene expression. Such findings emphasize the need to reduce rates of prenatal cigarette smoke exposure in order to promote health for both current and future generations. This Article …

The Return Of Results In Genetic Testing: Who Owes What To Whom, When, And Why?, Stephanie A. Alessi Aug 2013

The Return Of Results In Genetic Testing: Who Owes What To Whom, When, And Why?, Stephanie A. Alessi

UC Law Journal

The field of genetic research has revolutionized modern medicine and will continue to do so in the years to come. For the people whose biological materials form the basis for this research, however, the research process may also lead to personal discoveries—namely, it may expose information about their health, genetic predispositions, and other gene-linked characteristics. Researchers who uncover this kind of personal genetic information are likewise confronted with the question of whether they should—or must—provide their subjects with feedback about their results. For subjects and researchers alike, the answer is unclear. Presently, there is little guidance as to these parties’ rights …

Local Recruitment And Natal Dispersal Distances Of American Kestrels, Karen Steenhof, Julie A. Heath Aug 2013

Local Recruitment And Natal Dispersal Distances Of American Kestrels, Karen Steenhof, Julie A. Heath

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Variation in recruitment patterns and dispersal behavior can have important consequences for population viability, genetic structure, and rates of evolutionary change. From 1992 to 2006 we studied a marked population of American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) nesting in boxes in southwestern Idaho to identify factors that affect local recruitment and natal dispersal distances. A low proportion (4%) of locally produced kestrels (n = 2180) returned to nest in study area boxes. Offspring of locally produced individuals were 3.1 times more likely to return than offspring of parents that did not hatch in study area boxes and, independent of …

Hindu-Christian Conflict In India: Globalization, Conversion, And The Coterminal Castes And Tribes, Chad M. Bauman Aug 2013

Hindu-Christian Conflict In India: Globalization, Conversion, And The Coterminal Castes And Tribes, Chad M. Bauman

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

While Hindu-Muslim violence in India has received a great deal of scholarly attention, Hindu-Christian violence has not. This article seeks to contribute to the analysis of Hindu-Christian violence, and to elucidate the curious alliance, in that violence, of largely upper-caste, anti-minority Hindu nationalists with lower-status groups, by analyzing both with reference to the varied processes of globalization. The article begins with a short review of the history of anti-Christian rhetoric in India, and then discusses and critiques a number of inadequately unicausal explanations of communal violence before arguing, with reference to the work of Mark Taylor, that only theories linking …

Effects Of Prior Acute Exercise On Circulating Cytokine Concentration Responses To A High-Fat Meal, Josef Brandauer, Rian Q. Landers-Ramos, Nathan T. Jenkins, Espen E. Spangenburg, James M. Hagberg, Steven J. Prior

Health Sciences Faculty Publications

High-fat meal consumption alters the circulating cytokine profile and contributes to cardiometabolic diseases. A prior bout of exercise can ameliorate the triglyceride response to a high-fat meal, but the interactive effects of exercise and high-fat meals on cytokines that mediate cardiometabolic risk are not fully understood. We investigated the effects of prior exercise on the responses of circulating tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a), interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, leptin, retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), placental growth factor (PlGF), and soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) to a high-fat meal. Ten healthy men were studied before …

Modeling The Potential Spread Of The Recently Identified Non-Native Panther Grouper (Chromileptes Altivelis) In The Atlantic Using A Cellular Automaton Approach, Matthew W. Johnston, Samuel J. Purkis

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The Indo-pacific panther grouper (Chromileptes altiveli) is a predatory fish species and popular imported aquarium fish in the United States which has been recently documented residing in western Atlantic waters. To date, the most successful marine invasive species in the Atlantic is the lionfish (Pterois volitans/miles), which, as for the panther grouper, is assumed to have been introduced to the wild through aquarium releases. However, unlike lionfish, the panther grouper is not yet thought to have an established breeding population in the Atlantic. Using a proven modeling technique developed to track the lionfish invasion, presented is the first …

Integrated Analyses Of Genome-Wide Dna Occupancy And Expression Profiling Identify Key Genes And Pathways Involved In Cellular Transformation By A Marek’S Disease Virus Oncoprotein, Meq, Sugalesini Subramaniam, John Johnston, Likit Preeyanon, C. Titus Brown, Hsing-Jien Kung, Hans H. Cheng

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Marek’s disease (MD) is an economically significant disease in chickens that is caused by the highly oncogenic Marek’s disease virus (MDV). A major unanswered question is the mechanism of MDV-induced tumor formation. Meq, a bZIP transcription factor discovered in the 1990s, is critically involved in viral oncogenicity, but only a few of its host target genes have been described, impeding our understanding of MDV-induced tumorigenesis. Using chromatin immunoprecipitation-sequencing (ChIP-seq) and microarray analysis, a high-confidence list of Meq binding sites in the chicken genome and a global transcriptome of Meq-responsive genes were generated. Meq binding sites were found to be enriched …

A Stage-Structured Delayed Reaction-Diffusion Model For Competition Between Two Species., Chunwei Wang Aug 2013

A Stage-Structured Delayed Reaction-Diffusion Model For Competition Between Two Species., Chunwei Wang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We formulate a delayed reaction-diffusion model that describes competition between two species in a stream. We divide each species into two compartments, individuals inhabiting on the benthos and individuals drifting in the stream. Time delays are incorporated to measure the time lengths from birth to maturity of the benthic populations. We assume that the growth of population takes place on the benthos and that dispersal occurs in the stream. Our system consists of two linear reaction-diffusion equations and two delayed ordinary differential equations. We study the dynamics of the non-spatial model, determine the existence and global stability of the equilibria, …

Patient Preference And Compliance Between Hawley Retainers And Vacuum-Formed Retainers Following Orthodontic Treatment., Justin Wild Aug 2013

Patient Preference And Compliance Between Hawley Retainers And Vacuum-Formed Retainers Following Orthodontic Treatment., Justin Wild

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The traditional Hawley retainer has been replaced in many orthodontic offices by vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs). There has yet to be a study that investigates preferences and reasons for noncompliance between Hawley and vacuum-formed retainers by allowing each to be worn within the same patient. Specific Aim: To determine differences in compliance and reasons for noncompliance between Hawley and VFRs. Hypothesis: There will be increased compliance with VFRs due to better esthetics, speech, and comfort. Methods: In consecutive months but in a different order, two treatment groups received a set of Hawleys and VFRs following comprehensive treatment. All patients were …

The Rhetoric Of Africa : Historical Turns In Constructing A Continent, 1780-1890., Dexter Peck Mahaffey Aug 2013

The Rhetoric Of Africa : Historical Turns In Constructing A Continent, 1780-1890., Dexter Peck Mahaffey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines historical rhetoric about Africa in British and American writings between the beginnings of the Abolition period and the 1884 Berlin Conference at which the continent was divided by colonial powers. Tracing rhetorical trends of travel writers and their constituents through the explorations of the continent, it demarcates two turns in the way Africans and Africa were constructed rhetorically. In the process it reveals a 19th-century evolution from depicting Africa largely in terms of its viability for commerce and reception of European culture, to an Africa fallen into darkness, to Africa as the Dark Continent, permanently fixed in …

Plant And Arthropod Diversity In Prairie Restorations Around Louisville, Ky., Sarah Elizabeth Atherton Aug 2013

Plant And Arthropod Diversity In Prairie Restorations Around Louisville, Ky., Sarah Elizabeth Atherton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prairies are important ecological biomes that contain high biodiversity of economic and ecologically important flora and fauna. Unfortunately, despite the vast historic distribution over most of mid-America, remnant prairies are critically threatened due to urbanization and other anthropogenic activities. Therefore, measurements of richness are utilized to assess the stability and condition of remnant and restored prairies-higher richness indicating greater ecosystem stability. Arthropod abundance comprises a significant portion of the species richness found in prairies. Because of this, arthropods are an ideal group of organisms to study due to their relatively limited dispersal range and utilization of microhabitats. In this study, …

Enhanced Penetration Of Lipid Functionalized Nanoparticles In 3d Cell Cultures., Christopher Gene England 1988- Aug 2013

Enhanced Penetration Of Lipid Functionalized Nanoparticles In 3d Cell Cultures., Christopher Gene England 1988-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nanoparticle-based systems can alleviate systemic toxicity via surface functionalization to promote tissue-specific targeting as well as passive targeting abilities [1], such as the enhanced permeation and retention effect (EPR) [2]. The transport of nanoparticles is limited in hypoxic tumor regions due to the typically impaired tumor vasculature. To enhance diffusion of nanotherapeutics within tumor tissue; functionalized citrate gold nanoparticles and silica gold nanoshells with surface modifications of phosphatidylcholine (PC) and high density lipoprotein (HDL) were synthesized. 3D cell cultures were used as a representative model of portions of hypoxic tissue in liver, lung, and pancreatic solid tumors. Our results indicate …

Mast Cell-T Cell Interactions In Inflammatory Chemokine Mediated Immune Surveillance Of Intestinal Cancer., Sobha R. Bodduluri Aug 2013

Mast Cell-T Cell Interactions In Inflammatory Chemokine Mediated Immune Surveillance Of Intestinal Cancer., Sobha R. Bodduluri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chronic inflammation promotes a variety of cancers but inflammation also plays an important role in immune surveillance of cancer. Chemokine decoy receptor, D6 scavenges large number of inflammatory chemokines without transducing any signals and thus presumably dampens inflammation. Consistent with this notion, the D6 deficient mice displayed enhanced inflammation in variety of disease models. However, our laboratory observed that absence of D6 caused an unexpected decrease in inflammation and reduced tumor burden in the ApcMin/+ mouse model of intestinal cancer. Intestinal tumors in D6-/-ApcMin/+ mice showed increased mast cell infiltration but their contribution to tumor progression is unknown. Therefore, unravelling …

It is the aim of this dissertation to analyze the approaches on labor productivity on the most important protagonists which in the history. The historic …

The Characterization Of Wing-Wing Vortex Interactions Of A Tandem Flapping Wing Configuration And Its Relationship To The Phase Angle And Wing Spacing., Timothy Michael Broering 1985- Aug 2013

The Characterization Of Wing-Wing Vortex Interactions Of A Tandem Flapping Wing Configuration And Its Relationship To The Phase Angle And Wing Spacing., Timothy Michael Broering 1985-

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A number of flying insects make use of tandem wing configurations, suggesting that such a setup may have potential advantages over a single wing at low Reynolds numbers. Dragonflies, which are fast and highly maneuverable, demonstrate well, the potential performance of such a configuration. In a tandem wing configuration, the hindwing often operates in the wake of the forewing and, hence, its performance is affected by the vortices shed by the forewing. Changes in the phase angle between the flapping motions of the fore and hind wings, as well as the spacing between them, can affect the resulting vortex/wing and …

The Evolution Of Healthcare For Louisville's African American Community, 1865-1990., Angela Calloway Aug 2013

The Evolution Of Healthcare For Louisville's African American Community, 1865-1990., Angela Calloway

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

It is well documented that inequality in the delivery of health care exists within the U.S. (Smedley, Stith & Nelson, 2003; Trivedi, Zaslavsky, Schneider, & Ayanian, 2006). Historically, our health care system was a segregated one in which white Americans enjoyed one system of health care—a more privileged one-- while black Americans experienced another, supported by law and custom. Laws changed after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 but disparate practices lingered. Although there have been studies about the historical picture of segregated health care available to black Americans (Byrd & Clayton, 2000; Savitt, 2007), there is a lack of …
