The purpose of this study was to identify patient care practices of primary care providers in the monitoring and management of dyslipidemia in patients with type 2 diabetes according to the third report of the National Cholesterol Education program Adult Treatment Panel. The study presented here was a retrospective chart review of 300 charts completed in three primary care clinics in a southeastern state.

The transport process at the outer membrane of gram negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, is influenced by the TonB protein. The TonB protein energizes transport trough specific outer membrane proteins that are involved in iron uptake. It does this by using the energy that is collected from the ion electrochemical gradient of the cytoplasmic membrane, by complexes of ExbB and ExbD proteins. The functions of this system involve a set of poorly understood interactions between TonB, ExbB, ExbD, and the outer membrane transporters. Modifying the amino terminus of ExbB produces a drastic effect that is seen during energy transduction for transport …

Although phylloid algal mounds have been studied for 50 year, much remains to be determined concerning the ecology and sedimentology of these Late Paleozoic carbonate buildups. Herein we perform a digital outcrop study of the well-known Middle Pennsylvanian Lower Ismay mound interval in the Paradox Basin because outcropping mounds along the San Juan River are cited as outcrop analogs of reservoir carbonates in the Paradox Basin oil province of Utah and adjacent states. The principal field area is the Eight Foot algal field located at river mile 19.2 on the San Juan River, approximately 14 miles SSW of Bluff, Utah. …

Biological Activities Of Influenza Virus Subpopulations: Characterization Of Infectious, Interferon-Inducing And Interferon Induction-Suppressing Particles, Christopher P. Malinoski

This dissertation explores the complex nature of the influenza virus quasispecies. Influenza populations exist as a mixture of mostly replication-deficient biologically-active particles. These particles are measured and quantified based upon the phenotype they manifest upon entry into the host. Three subpopulations are characterized: infectious, interferon-inducing, and interferon induction-suppressing particles.

It has been observed that only 5 out of every 100 particles of influenza are infectious. A novel biological assay was developed and, for the first time, directly demonstrated that infectious particles are the progenitors of all other virus particles. Background: A growing body of evidence shows that gene products encoded by short open reading frames play key roles in numerous cellular processes. Yet, they are generally overlooked in genome assembly, escaping annotation because small protein-coding genes are difficult to predict computationally. Consequently, there are still a considerable number of small proteins whose functions are yet to be characterized.Results: To address this issue, we apply a collection of structural bioinformatics algorithms to infer molecular function of putative small proteins from the mouse proteome. Although college aspirations have increased over the past several decades, significant gaps in race, ethnicity and income groups remain among high school students. Students of low-income and minority backgrounds are least likely to prepare for and enroll in college. A review of literature revealed that significant disparities found among students can be attributed to the lack of academic preparation, college knowledge, resources and shared advising in high schools (ACT, 2009; Conley, 2010, Spence, 2009). Research was conducted within the framerwork of the Leadership Identity Development (LID) model authored by Komives, Owen, Longerbem, Mainella, and Osteen (2005). The chemosensory abilities of fishes, are important in order to understand how prey can perceive and avoid predators. Predator-naïve Channel catfish were exposed to four extracts over eight sessions (naïve bass water (NBW), bass that were fed catfish water (BFCW), catfish skin extract (CS), and naïve bass water paired with catfish skin extract (CO)) to determine whether they have an innate predator response to potential chemical cues indicating possible predation risk. Movement was quantified as grid squares crossed, directional changes, and tail beats. Response increased during the first minute following stimulus injection and decreased during the second minute. The Haitian Revolution was the first successful slave revolt in history. And even though Haiti declared independence from France in 1804, most French civilization textbooks do not include this important event. From an economic standpoint, France depended on its imports from Saint-Domingue (Haiti's pre-revolutionary name); and from a philosophical standpoint, the slave revolt in Saint-Domingue originated from ideas that came from French philosophers preaching the Rights of Man. Studying the Haitian Revolution within the context of the French Revolution provides a perspective that highlights the complex relationship between France and its colonies as well as religion's displaced role after 1789. …

We present a multi-layer multi-column computational model of neocortex that is built based on the activity and connections of known neuronal cell types and includes activity-dependent short term plasticity. This model, a network of spiking neurons, is validated by showing that it exhibits activity close to biology in terms of several characteristics: (1) proper laminar flow of activity; (2) columnar organization with focality of inputs; (3) low-threshold-spiking (LTS) and fast-spiking (FS) neurons function as observed in normal cortical circuits; and (4) different stages of epileptiform activity can be obtained with either increasing the level of inhibitory blockade, or simulation of …

Well-differentiated liposarcoma represents a radiographic diagnostic dilemma. To determine the accuracy, interrater reliability, and relationship of stranding, nodularity, and size in the MRI differentiation of lipoma and well-differentiated liposarcoma, MRI scans of 60 patients with large (>5 cm), deep, pathologically proven lipomas or well-differentiated liposarcomas were examined by 10 observers with subspecialty training blinded to diagnosis. Observers indicated whether the amount of stranding, nodularity, and size of each tumor suggested a benign or malignant diagnosis and rendered a diagnosis of lipoma or well-differentiated liposarcoma. The accuracy, reliability, and relationship of stranding, nodularity, and size to diagnosis were calculated for …

Diarrheal diseases are the second-most common cause of death among children under the age of five worldwide. Cholera alone, caused by the marine bacterium Vibrio cholerae, is responsible for several million cases and over 120,000 deaths annually. When contaminated water is ingested, V. cholerae passes through the gastric acid barrier, penetrates the mucin layer of the small intestine, and adheres to the underlying epithelial lining. V. cholerae multiplies rapidly, secretes cholera toxin, and exits the human host in vast numbers during diarrheal purges. How V. cholerae rapidly reaches such high numbers during each purge is not clearly understood. We propose …

Tobramycin disposition following airway administration was evaluated by meta-analysis of human data in the literature and, experimentally, using a realistic ex vivo model, the isolated perfused rat lung preparation (IPRL). Pulmonary bioavailability of inhaled tobramycin in published studies was re-evaluated separately for CF and healthy adults, with the drug’s intrinsic pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters obtained from intravenous (IV) studies in the literature. While large variations in tobramycin’s clearance precluded accurate assessment of its bioavailability, the results were indicative of substantial pulmonary absorption, in spite of its hydrophilic and poly cationic properties. The processes of lung ventilation and perfusion, diffusion, and gas transport make up the system of breathing and tissue oxygenation. Here, we present several mathematical formulations of the essential processes that contribute to breathing. These models aid in our understanding and analysis of this complex system and can be used to form treatments for patients on ventilators. With the right analysis and treatment options, patients can be helped and money can be saved. We conclude with the formulation of a mathematical model for the exchange of gasses in the body based on basic reaction kinetics.

Problem Statement: The length of periodic abstinence, due to overestimation of the fertile phase of the menstrual cycle is often a reason for dissatisfaction, discontinuation, and user error with natural family planning (NFP) methods. The objective of this research was to compare the length of required abstinence (i.e., estimated fertility) and coital frequency between two NFP methods.
