Background

Photodynamic therapy with aminolevulinic acid (ALA PDT) for oral leukoplakia has shown promising effects in regression of oral leukoplakia. Although ALA has been extensively studied and is an ideal photosensitizer, the optimal light dose for treatment of oral leukoplakia has not been determined. We conducted a phase I study to determine MTD and DLT of PDT in patients treated with ALA for leukoplakia.

Methods

Patients with histologically confirmed oral leukoplakia received a single treatment of ALA PDT in cohorts with escalating doses of light (585 nm). Clinical, histologic, and biologic markers were assessed.

Results

Analysis of 11 participants is …

The Effect Of Malnutrition On Patients Undergoing Elective Joint Arthroplasty., Ronald Huang, Md, Max Greenky, Bs, Glenn J. Kerr, Md, Mathew S. Austin, Md, Javad Parvizi, Md, Frcs

Rothman Institute Papers

Malnutrition has been linked to serious complications in patients undergoing elective total joint arthroplasty (TJA). This study prospectively evaluated 2,161 patients undergoing elective TJA for malnutrition as defined by either an abnormal serum albumin or transferrin. The overall incidence of malnutrition was 8.5% (184 of 2,161) and the rate of overall complications in the malnourished group was 12% as compared to 2.9% in patients with normal parameters (P55years-old undergoing TJA and is associated with a significant increase in post-operative complications.

Cryptic Genetic Subdivision In The San Benito Evening Primrose (Camissonia Benitensis), Cynthia A. Dick, Julie A. Herman, Ryan E. O'Dell, Adriana Lopez-Villalobos, Chris Eckert, Justen B. Whittall

Biology

When rare plants are distributed across a range of habitats, ecotypic differentiation may arise requiring customized conservation measures. The rate of local adaptation may be accelerated in complex landscapes with numerous physical barriers to gene flow. In such cases, examining the distribution of genetic diversity is essential in determining conservation management units. We investigated the distribution of genetic diversity in the federally threatened Camissonia benitensis (Onagraceae), which grows in two distinct serpentine habitats across several watersheds in San Benito, Fresno, and Monterey Cos., CA, USA. We compared genetic diversity with that of its two widespread relatives, C. contorta and C. …

Social Work Faculty Publications

Background: Syphilis is an important sexually transmitted infection (STI) with serious public health consequences. Among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Lima, the prevalence and incidence are extraordinarily high. Current syndromic approaches, however, fail to identify asymptomatic cases, and in settings where large proportions of individuals test positive again after treatment, it is frequently difficult to distinguish treatment failure from re-infection. Thus, new approaches are needed to improve treatment strategies and public health control efforts.

Methods/Design: Study participants will undergo baseline testing for syphilis infection along with a behavioral survey covering demographics, sexual behavior, drug and …

Amino Acid Supply And Utilization With Emphasis On Lysine And Impacts On Lactation Responses Of Dairy Cows Fed Rations Containing Distillers’ Dried Grains With Solubles, Henry Paz Sep 2013

Amino Acid Supply And Utilization With Emphasis On Lysine And Impacts On Lactation Responses Of Dairy Cows Fed Rations Containing Distillers’ Dried Grains With Solubles, Henry Paz

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Inclusion of feed coproducts in dairy diets is a common strategy used to reduce the cost of producing milk. The corn ethanol industry produces a coproduct namely distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) which could be of high value to the dairy industry because of its high concentration of protein and energy. Under the feeding regimes in the U.S., Lys and Met are recognized as the two most limiting amino acids (AA) for milk protein synthesis. Similar to corn, DDGS is limiting in Lys but not Met. Thus, high inclusions of DDGS have not been favored in the field as …

Endangered Species In The Oil Patch: Challenges And Opportunities For The Oil And Gas Industry, Gabriel Eckstein, Jesse Snyder Sep 2013

Endangered Species In The Oil Patch: Challenges And Opportunities For The Oil And Gas Industry, Gabriel Eckstein, Jesse Snyder

Faculty Scholarship

Tension among competing interests is nothing new in environmental law. Even among the most tenacious adversaries, the ability to find common ground can serve as an impetus to further the aims of both industry and environmental proponents. Broadly speaking, advocates of the oil and gas industry prefer few restraints, if any, on exploration, development, and production. Comparatively, champions of biological and ecological preservation favor regulatory protections to conserve these interests. Cutting across these often disparate objectives, the Endangered Species Act (ESA) presents a not-so-obvious opportunity for both sides to receive a share of the pie through cooperation and forward planning. …

Tonic And Phasic Smooth Muscle Contraction Is Not Regulated By The Pkcα - Cpi-17 Pathway In Swine Stomach Antrum And Fundus, Yu Zhang, Meghan E. Hermanson, Thomas J. Eddinger Sep 2013

Tonic And Phasic Smooth Muscle Contraction Is Not Regulated By The Pkcα - Cpi-17 Pathway In Swine Stomach Antrum And Fundus, Yu Zhang, Meghan E. Hermanson, Thomas J. Eddinger

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Regulation of myosin light chain phosphatase (MLCP) via protein kinase C (PKC) and the 17 kDa PKC-potentiated inhibitor of myosin light chain phosphatase (CPI-17) has been reported as a Ca2+ sensitization signaling pathway in smooth muscle (SM), and thus may be involved in tonic vs. phasic contractions. This study examined the protein expression and spatial-temporal distribution of PKCα and CPI-17 in intact SM tissues. KCl or carbachol (CCh) stimulation of tonic stomach fundus SM generates a sustained contraction while the phasic stomach antrum generates a transient contraction. In addition, the tonic fundus generates greater relative force than phasic antrum …

Cognitive Conflict Adaptation In Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Scott A. Baldwin, Michael J. Larson, Ann Clawson, Peter E. Clayson Sep 2013

Cognitive Conflict Adaptation In Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Scott A. Baldwin, Michael J. Larson, Ann Clawson, Peter E. Clayson

Faculty Publications

ndividuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) display poor emotional conflict adaptation, a cogni- tive control process requiring the adjustment of performance based on previous-trial conflict. It is unclear whether GAD-related conflict adaptation difficulties are present during tasks without emotionally-salient stimuli. We examined conflict adaptation using the N2 component of the event-related potential (ERP) and behavioral responses on a Flanker task from 35 individuals with GAD and 35 controls. Groups did not differ on conflict adaptation accuracy; individuals with GAD also displayed intact RT conflict adaptation. In contrast, individuals with GAD showed decreased amplitude N2 principal component for conflict adap- tation. …

Intramolecular Hydrogen Bonding In CuIi Complexes With 2,6-Pyridinedicarboxamide Ligands: Synthesis, Structural Characterization, And Physical Properties, Denan Wang, Sergey V. Lindeman, Adam T. Fiedler

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The significance of second-sphere interactions in synthetic catalysts and metalloenzyme active sites has encouraged the development of ligand frameworks capable of supporting intramolecular hydrogen-bonding networks. With this approach in mind, we prepared a series of 2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide ligands (H2LX) that feature outer-sphere heterocyclic groups (pyridine, pyrimidine, or quinoline rings). Reaction with CuCl2 yields complexes with the general formula [CuCl2(LX{H}2)] (1X), in which the pincer ligands coordinate to the CuII center in a tridentate fashion through the central pyridine and two amidato nitrogen atoms. The LX …

Enzymatic Hydrolysis Of Biomass At High-Solids Loadings – A Review, Alicia A. Modenbach, Sue E. Nokes

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Enzymatic hydrolysis is the unit operation in the lignocellulose conversion process that utilizes enzymes to depolymerize lignocellulosic biomass. The saccharide components released are the feedstock for fermentation. When performed at high-solids loadings (≥ 15% solids, w/w), enzymatic hydrolysis potentially offers many advantages over conversions performed at low- or moderate-solids loadings, including increased sugar and ethanol concentrations and decreased capital and operating costs.

The goal of this review is to provide a consolidated source of information on studies using high-solids loadings in enzymatic hydrolysis. Included in this review is a brief discussion of the limitations, such as a lack of available …
