Identifying Sheep Parentage By Polymorphic Genetic Markers In Suffolk Sheep, Jennifer A. Jerman, Robert L. Park
Identifying Sheep Parentage By Polymorphic Genetic Markers In Suffolk Sheep, Jennifer A. Jerman, Robert L. Park
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Polymorphic genetic markers aid in parentage testing among individuals of the same breed. Suffolk sheep randomly mate and the need for accurate, reliable, and rapid testing for resolution of such mating is mandatory for the animals’ record and further genetic production. Therefore, it is necessary to identify such matings of individuals.
Addiction And Attachment : Mental Health Clinicians' Use Of Attachment Theory In The Treatment Of Substance Use Disorders, Emily Tate
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study explores mental health clinicians' use of attachment theory in the treatment of substance use disorders (SUDs). There are many quantitative studies that show a correlation between substance use and insecure attachment style, yet there is little research that looks at whether or how mental health clinicians are using attachment theory in treatment or the possible benefits and limitations of its use. This is a qualitative study that sampled ten mental health clinicians to see if and how attachment theory is used in treating SUDs. It also explored the benefits and limitations of using attachment theory in the treatment …

The Things They Carry : A Study Of Transitional Object Use Among U.S. Military Personnel During And After Deployment, Julia St. George
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to explore how transitional objects are used during and after combat, and whether their use promotes resilience, reduces the effects of combat-related stress, and helps service members with "coming home" from war. The research looked for possible ties between objects with emotional significance that were carried during deployment and the effect the items had on service members' mental health and wellbeing, Sixty-six combat veterans of World War II through the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan completed an online survey consisting of multiple-choice, open-ended, and Likert scale questions that were used to capture their experiences …
Locus Of Control And Quality Of Life In Individuals With Schizotypy, Rachael Paulbeck
Locus Of Control And Quality Of Life In Individuals With Schizotypy, Rachael Paulbeck
Theses and Dissertations
The present study collected data from 200 undergraduate students (106 male, 94 female) and sought to examine the relationship between levels of stress, cognitive processes related to stress management (Locus of Control- LOC; Sense of Coherence; SOC), and quality of life (QOL) across varying levels of risk for developing schizophrenia. Results indicated that high-risk individuals are significantly more likely to have an external locus of control (F=4.121, p=.018) supporting hypothesis 1. Counter to our second hypothesis, locus of control was not directly associated with QOL. However, LOC was correlated with both stress and level of risk for schizophrenia which (in …

Terrain Following In Unmanned Air Vehicles Using Optic Flow Sensors, Blake Barber, Dr. Tim Mclain
Journal of Undergraduate Research
A key enabling technology that will allow the U.S. Military to maintain information superiority in the 21st century is the development and implementation of Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) technology. Especially critical to the support of the small special operations units conducting the asymmetric warfare of the 21st century will be the development of mini and micro UAV technology. Mini and micro UAV technology will enable foot soldiers to hand launch and recover small, robust reconnaissance aircraft capable of providing real-time video surveillance and real-time target acquisition. These capabilities will allow soldiers to have the full situational awareness they need for …
Use Of Solid-Phase Extraction To Enrich Protein Biomarkers Of Disease From Blood Serum, Peter F. Mclean, Dr Craig Thulin
Use Of Solid-Phase Extraction To Enrich Protein Biomarkers Of Disease From Blood Serum, Peter F. Mclean, Dr Craig Thulin
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Biomarkers in blood serum are the keys needed for the early detection of several types of cancer, complications of pregnancy, and potentially many other diseases, to allow time for successful treatment. Blood serum is ideal because itp comes in contact with all parts of the body, its sampling is minimally invasive, and it is easily prepared with high reproducibility. There is a problem, however, that prevents the development and wide-scale utilization of this treasure chest of biological information. Pure blood serum is complex and cluttered with high-abundance non-target proteins which makes examination of the low-abundance and low-molecular weight potential biomarkers …

Protein Kinase Ck2 Phosphorylates And Activates P21-Activated Kinase 1, Yong Jae Shin, Yong-Bae Kim, Jeong-Ho Kim
Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications
Activation of the p21-activated kinase 1 (PAK1) is achieved through a conformational change that converts an inactive PAK1 dimer to an active monomer. In this paper, we show that this change is necessary but not sufficient to activate PAK1 and that it is, rather, required for CK2-dependent PAK1S223 phosphorylation that converts a monomeric PAK1 into a catalytically active form. This phosphorylation appears to be essential for autophosphorylation at specific residues and overall activity of PAK1. A phosphomimetic mutation (S223E) bypasses the requirement for GTPases in PAK1 activation, whereas the constitutive activity of the PAK1 mutant (PAK1H83,86L), postulated to mimic GTPase-induced …

Ecology Of Scale In Visual Landscape Assessments, Richard K. Sutton
Ecology Of Scale In Visual Landscape Assessments, Richard K. Sutton
Landscape Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity
Background readings on scale plus twenty-three visual landscape assessment studies from 1968 to 2006 were examined to understand the nature and use of scale and its relationship to the visual environment. The objectives of this study were to: 1) describe the concept of scale as applied to visual assessments, 2) review scale use in selected visual assessments, and 3) identify issues that need further research to better integrate scale into visual landscape assessments and landscape ecological theory.
Basic concepts and features relating observers with landscape and scale required defining scale, bounding visibility, perceiving scale, seeing hierarchically, and visualizing grain and …

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans secretes ascarosides, structurally diverse derivatives of the 3,6-dideoxysugar ascarylose, and uses them in chemical communication. At high population densities, specific ascarosides, which are together known as the dauer pheromone, trigger entry into the stress-resistant dauer larval stage. In order to study the structure-activity relationships for the ascarosides, we synthesized a panel of ascarosides and tested them for dauer-inducing activity. This panel includes a number of natural ascarosides that were detected in crude pheromone extract, but as yet have no assigned function, as well as many unnatural ascaroside derivatives. Most of these ascarosides, some of which have …

A series of twenty-two BODIPY compounds were synthesized, containing various meso-phenyl and meso-thienyl groups, and their spectroscopic and structural properties were investigated using both experimental and computational methods. Further functionalization of the BODIPY framework via iodination at the 2,6-pyrrolic positions was explored in order to determine the effect of these heavy atoms on the photophysical and cytotoxicity of the meso-aryl-BODIPYs. BODIPYs bearing meso-thienyl substituents showed the largest red-shifted absorptions and emissions and reduced fluorescence quantum yields. The phototoxicity of the BODIPYs in human carcinoma HEp2 cells depends on both the presence of iodines and the nature of the meso-aryl groups. …

Leukemia-Associated Rhogef (Larg) Is A Novel Rhogef In Cytokinesis And Required For The Proper Completion Of Abscission., Matthew K Martz, Elda Grabocka, Neil Beeharry, Timothy J Yen, Philip B Wedegaertner
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Proper completion of mitosis requires the concerted effort of multiple RhoGEFs. Here we show that leukemia-associated RhoGEF (LARG), a RhoA-specific RGS-RhoGEF, is required for abscission, the final stage of cytokinesis, in which the intercellular membrane is cleaved between daughter cells. LARG colocalizes with α-tubulin at the spindle poles before localizing to the central spindle. During cytokinesis, LARG is condensed in the midbody, where it colocalizes with RhoA. HeLa cells depleted of LARG display apoptosis during cytokinesis with unresolved intercellular bridges, and rescue experiments show that expression of small interfering RNA-resistant LARG prevents this apoptosis. Moreover, live cell imaging of LARG-depleted …
Games In Organizations And Social Influence, Michał Mijal, Waldemar Grzywacz
Games In Organizations And Social Influence, Michał Mijal, Waldemar Grzywacz
European Management Studies
Games in the organizations can be approached from various angles, depending on the theoretical perspective. Social influence (or manipulation in a more narrow sense) was a subject to many attempts of classification or typology as well. The article arranges the essential concepts of games and social influence in the organizations while showing potential interdependencies. As a starting point various definitions – classic and modern as well – were adopted. Next, the ramifications were named and based on that the attempt to indicate the possible research directions was undertaken. The possibilities of practical use in consulting were also pointed out.

G protein-coupled receptor kinases (GRKs) play a central role in regulating receptor signaling, but recent studies suggest a broader role in modulating normal cellular functions. For example, GRK5 has been shown to localize to centrosomes and regulate microtubule nucleation and cell cycle progression. Here we demonstrate that GRK2 is also localized to centrosomes, although it has no role in centrosome duplication or microtubule nucleation. Of interest, knockdown of GRK2 inhibits epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mediated separation of duplicated centrosomes. This EGFR/GRK2-mediated process depends on the protein kinases mammalian STE20-like kinase 2 (Mst2) and Nek2A but does not involve polo-like kinase …

HIV-positive women are infected with human papillomavirus (HPV) (especially with multiple types), and develop cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer more frequently than HIV-negative women. We compared HPV DNA prevalence obtained using a GP5+/6+ PCR assay in cervical exfoliated cells to that in biopsies among 468 HIV-positive women from Nairobi, Kenya. HPV prevalence was higher in cells than biopsies and the difference was greatest in 94 women with a combination normal cytology/normal biopsy (prevalence ratio, PR = 3.7; 95% confidence interval, CI: 2.4-5.7). PR diminished with the increase in lesion severity (PR in 58 women with high-grade squamous intraepithelial …
