Tumor-Associated Macrophage Interaction With The Tumor Microenvironment, Heather Aamodt, Dr. Kim L. O'Neill
Tumor-Associated Macrophage Interaction With The Tumor Microenvironment, Heather Aamodt, Dr. Kim L. O'Neill
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Oncologists currently use chemotherapy and radiation to treat many cancers. The goal of both these treatments is to target cancerous cells without killing too many healthy ones. Both radiation and chemotherapy induce a form of cell death called apoptosis in an attempt to eliminate the body of a tumor. Current studies suggest that when tumor-associated macrophages ingest apoptotic cell debris, they fail to secrete pro-inflammatory mediators that would help clear the invader – whether a pathogen or a tumor – from the body. Ruptured necrotic cells, however, induce a strong inflammatory response that augments immune function. If macrophage engulfment of …

Lipids And Vesicular Fusion (The Doorway To My Future), Brady Atwood, Dr. Dixon J. Woodbury
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Exocytosis is the process by which a cell excretes intracellular substances into an extracellular space. Cells perform this by storing these substances in lipid membrane enclosed spheres called vesicles. These vesicles are brought to the inside surface of the cellular membrane where they are docked and primed for release upon the appropriate signal. When the signal occurs the vesicles fuse to the membrane releasing the stored material into the space around the cell. This is especially relevant in neuroscience as this is the process by which neurotransmitters are released into the synaptic cleft which then go on to stimulate/inhibit another …

Understanding the temporal and spatial scale at which habitat alteration impacts populations is important for conservation and management. Amphibians have declined more than other vertebrates, and pond-breeding species are particularly susceptible to habitat loss and fragmentation because they have terrestrial and aquatic life stages. One approach to management of pond-breeding species is protection of core upland habitat surrounding the breeding pond. We used genetic variation as an indicator of population status in a common amphibian species, spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum), to determine how amount of suitable upland habitat relates to population status in the greater Charlotte, North Carolina, …

Propensity For Military Enlistment : A Descriptive Study Of Motivations, Claudia J. Vogelsang
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The objective of this descriptive study was to identify and describe those motivations for individuals who chose to enter into the military. Motivations are important to understand as they provide insight into the values and needs of individuals. These values and needs impact an individual's Person-In-Environment fit. The study utilized an online survey to which 76 veterans or service members responded. The online survey collected demographic data such as age, gender, race and branch of service. The questionnaire then asked participants to rank a list of enlistment motivations noted in previous studies (Griffith, 2008; Woodruff, Kelty and Segal, 2007)on a …
The Role Of Lgbt Community In The Lives Of Lesbians Over 65 : An Exploratory Study, Sarah L. Shapiro
The Role Of Lgbt Community In The Lives Of Lesbians Over 65 : An Exploratory Study, Sarah L. Shapiro
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to explore the role of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the lives of lesbians over 65. Lesbians over 65 have lived through a period in U.S. history when homosexuality was not socially acceptable or safe; LGBT individuals lived with a real and constant threat of loss of employment and family, and of violence, without protection of law that is afforded today. LGBT individuals are currently more accepted, safe, and visible in the U.S, as are the communities that they have formed. With these new developments, do lesbians over 65 participate in, or connect with …

A Question Of Diagnosis : Mood And Character In A Case Of Emerging Mental Illness, Tandeka Guilderson
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
My thesis will use case material from a patient with an emerging diagnosis of a major mental illness (Bipolar Disorder) to examine the intersection of mood, character, medical comorbidity, substance abuse, to better understand how these factors contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with a complicated, but in no way unique presentation, of this complicated and unique disorder. The case material utilized will be based on patient records and process recordings from our treatment sessions. The theoretical thesis structurally is comprised of an analysis of two bodies of knowledge, a phenomenon, and a synthesis. The first area …

New metabolomics applications of ultra-high resolution and accuracy mass spectrometry can provide thousands of detectable isotopologues, with the number of potentially detectable isotopologues increasing exponentially with the number of stable isotopes used in newer isotope tracing methods like stable isotope-resolved metabolomics (SIRM) experiments. This huge increase in usable data requires software capable of correcting the large number of isotopologue peaks resulting from SIRM experiments in a timely manner. We describe the design of a new algorithm and software system capable of handling these high volumes of data, while including quality control methods for maintaining data quality. We validate this new …

Impact Of Treatment Response Metrics On Photodynamic Therapy Planning And Outcomes In A Three-Dimensional Model Of Ovarian Cancer, Sriram Anbil, Imran Rizvi, Jonathan P. Celli, Nermina Alagic, Brian W. Pogue, Tayyaba Hasan
Impact Of Treatment Response Metrics On Photodynamic Therapy Planning And Outcomes In A Three-Dimensional Model Of Ovarian Cancer, Sriram Anbil, Imran Rizvi, Jonathan P. Celli, Nermina Alagic, Brian W. Pogue, Tayyaba Hasan
Dartmouth Scholarship
Common methods to characterize treatment efficacy based on morphological imaging may misrepresent outcomes and exclude effective therapies. Using a three-dimensional model of ovarian cancer, two functional treatment response metrics are used to evaluate photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficacy: total volume, calculated from viable and nonviable cells, and live volume, calculated from viable cells. The utility of these volume-based metrics is corroborated using independent reporters of photodynamic activity: viability, a common fluorescence-based ratiometric analysis, and photosensitizer photobleaching, which is characterized by a loss of fluorescence due in part to the production of reactive species during PDT. Live volume correlated with both photobleaching …

Continuous Cyclic Mechanical Tension Increases Ank Expression In Endplate Chondrocytes Through The Tgf-Β1 And P38 Pathway, H Xu, X Zhang, H Wang, Y Zhang, Y Shi, X Zhang
Open Access Publications
The normal ANK protein has a strong influence on anti-calcification. It is known that TGF-β1 is also able to induce extracellular inorganic pyrophosphate (ePPi) elaboration via the TGF-β1-induced ank gene expression and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling acts as a downstream effector of TGF-β1. We hypothesized that the expression of the ank gene is regulated by mechanics through TGF-β1-p38 pathway. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of short-time mechanical tension-induced ank gene expression. We found that the continuous cyclic mechanical tension (CCMT) increased the ank gene expression in the endplate chondrocytes, and there was an increase in the …

Mixed-Race Studies; Misstep Or The Next Step For Ethnic Studies In A Blending Nation?, Jennifer E. Robe
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
In January of 2011, the New York Times reported that 2010 U.S. Census data shows that younger generations are self-reporting their racial identity as multiracial or mixed-race in higher numbers than ever before¹. Classes in higher education that engage with race and ethnicity, often but not always as part of Ethnic Studies programs in universities, discuss and critique the categorizations of race and ethnicity. However, there is a social, political and economic power and privilege that groups have in being recognized as part of a categorized racial and/or ethnic group that mixedrace or multiracial identified individuals do not have when …
Against Metametaphysical Semanticism, Ryan Marquez
Against Metametaphysical Semanticism, Ryan Marquez
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
This paper presents a brief overview of meta-metaphysics and gives an account of why the various philosophers believe such a field exists, or ought to exist. The paper then discusses one particular approach in meta-metaphysical analysis as described by Eli Hirsch called semanticism and how it purports to resolve the problems within traditional metaphysics. Finally, it makes the case that Hirsch’s account utilizes first-order metaphysical assumptions in its argumentation and thus undermines its legitimacy as being part of an independent philosophical field.

Industrial And Environmental Pressures Affecting Fante-Speaking Artisanal Fishers Of Anomabo, Ghana: A Case Study, Dylan Clark
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
A great deal of literature exists regarding the global fisheries crisis. However, the human element has been largely overlooked. This study seeks to understand the relationship that traditional Fante-speaking peoples have with oceanic resources. Interviews with artisanal fishers, trades-women, and influential elders from the coastal village of Anomabo in the Central Region of Ghana were conducted over a six-week period. Interviews revealed the degree to which artisanal fishers compete with industrial fleets (both domestic and foreign), the nutritional and economic importance of the artisanal industry as well as the cultural practices embedded within maritime subsistence activities. Industrial fisheries threaten global …

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Snafr‐5 Derivatives, Jia Li Zhao
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
The synthesis and characterization of a new series of long wavelength and NIR-active dyes for use as diagnostic indicators in biological fluids has been carried out. The dyes are synthesized by a one-pot acid promoted condensation and isolated by flash column chromatography. Their structures are assigned by NMR and mass spectrometry. The spectral properties are evaluated by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Preliminary spectroscopic data reveal these dyes exhibit anticipated characteristics that apparently meet the current requirements as NIR-active dye candidates for bioimaging and medical applications.

Effects Of Environmental Enrichment And Natural Substrates On Increasing Species‐Specific Behavior Of Captive Northern White‐Cheeked Gibbons (Nomascus Leucogenys Leucogenys), Arina Woolery
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Suboptimal housing conditions in zoos can cause animals to develop negative behaviors associated with excessive stress levels. Environmental enrichment and the use of natural substrates can decrease stereotypy and increase species-specific behaviors of captive animals (Gibbons et al, 1994). This study observed two pairs of gibbons (Nomascus leucogenys leucogenys) at the Oregon Zoo for 40 hours from July 5th through August 7th in order to analyze the effect that increased environmental enrichment and natural substrates had on the behavior of captive white-cheeked gibbons. One of the gibbon pairs (Phyllis and Duffy) had been housed in the new Red Ape Reserve …

The Effects Of Experimentally Induced Psychological Stress On Memory Recall, Mohamed A. Mohamed
The Effects Of Experimentally Induced Psychological Stress On Memory Recall, Mohamed A. Mohamed
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Numerous studies have established the relationship between stress and memory, particularly stress and its effect on memory retrieval. When we experience stress, there is a cascade of hormonal responses which are critical to helping the body cope with the stressful event. When the stressful event persists, levels of the hormone cortisol--a type of glucocorticoid increases in response to the stress and have wide-ranging effects on the body. In particular, cortisol can have an effect on brain cells, particularly the hippocampus which is responsible for cognitive activities such as learning and memory. In this study, we utilized a public speaking task …

Income Disparity For Working Mothers: Eliminating Structural Discrimination Through Public Policy, Marques Lang
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Several studies have shown that in the United States mothers earn lower incomes than employees of similar qualifications and productivity levels. This phenomenon is known as the motherhood penalty. This paper analyzes the antecedents of the motherhood penalty as well as other factors that result in mothers earning lower wages than other women and men, particularly fathers. This begs the question: what role do institutions play in maintaining wage inequality through public policies, specifically maternity leave policy? In answering this question, both the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 and the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 are examined to …

Background
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men. Multiple evidence suggests that a population of tumor-initiating, or cancer stem cells (CSCs) is responsible for cancer development and exceptional drug resistance, representing a highly important therapeutic target. The present study evaluated CSC-specific alterations induced by new-generation taxoid SBT-1214 and a novel polyenolic zinc-binding curcuminoid, CMC2.24, in prostate CSCs.
Principal Findings
The CD133high/CD44high phenotype was isolated from spontaneously immortalized patient-derived PPT2 cells and highly metastatic PC3MM2 cells. Weekly treatment of the NOD/SCID mice bearing PPT2- and PC3MM3-induced tumors with the SBT-1214 led to dramatic suppression of tumor …
