Characterization Of Microsatellites For Population Genetic Analyses Of The Fungus-Growing Termite Odontotermes Formosanus (Isoptera: Termitidae), Claudia Husseneder, Susan P. Garner, Qiuying Huang, Warren Booth, Edward L. Vargo

Faculty Publications

The fungus-growing subterranean termite Odontotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Termitidae) is a destructive pest in Southeast Asia. To facilitate studies on the biology, ecology, and control of O. formosanus, we isolated and characterized nine novel microsatellite loci from a mixed partial genomic library of O. formosanus and the sympatric Macrotermes barneyi Light enriched for di-, tri-, and tetranucleotide repeats. We screened these loci in three populations of O. formosanus from China. All loci were polymorphic. Three loci showed heterozygote deficit possibly because of the presence of null alleles. The remaining six loci with 4-15 alleles per locus and an average observed …

Static Saliency Vs. Dynamic Saliency: A Comparative Study, Tam Nguyen, Mengdi Xu, Guangyu Gao, Mohan Kankanhalli, Qi Tian, Shuicheng Yan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Recently visual saliency has attracted wide attention of researchers in the computer vision and multimedia field. However, most of the visual saliency-related research was conducted on still images for studying static saliency. In this paper, we give a comprehensive comparative study for the first time of dynamic saliency (video shots) and static saliency (key frames of the corresponding video shots), and two key observations are obtained: 1) video saliency is often different from, yet quite related with, image saliency, and 2) camera motions, such as tilting, panning or zooming, affect dynamic saliency significantly.

Motivated by these observations, we propose a …

Selling Art: An Empirical Assessment Of Advertising On Fertility Clinics' Websites, Jim Hawkins Oct 2013

Selling Art: An Empirical Assessment Of Advertising On Fertility Clinics' Websites, Jim Hawkins

Indiana Law Journal

Scholarship on assisted reproductive technologies (ART) has emphasized the commercial nature of the interaction between fertility patients and their physicians, but little attention has been paid to precisely how clinics persuade patients to choose their clinics over their competitors’. This Article offers evidence about how clinics sell ART based on clinics’ advertising on their websites. To assess clinics’ marketing efforts, I coded advertising information on 372 fertility clinics’ websites. The results from the study confirm some suspicions of prior ART scholarship while contradicting others. For instance, in line with scholars who are concerned that racial minorities face barriers to accessing …

Quality Of Olive Oils Available Locally: Chemical, Sensory And Market Investigations, Madeleine M. Gould Oct 2013

Quality Of Olive Oils Available Locally: Chemical, Sensory And Market Investigations, Madeleine M. Gould

Honors Theses and Capstones

Olive oil is a high quality food that comes at a high-quality price. Extra virgin olive oils are obtained through specific methods created to extract the highest quality oil. The world market of olive oil is rife with accusations of adulteration and false claims regarding quality. These are serious accusations, since adulteration results in lower quality oils. True extra virgin olive oils contain higher levels of beneficial compounds including antioxidant phenolic compounds. Specific mechanisms have been identified in which phenolic compounds in the olive oil matrix exhibit antioxidant activity contributing to the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular disease, among other …

Due Date: Enforcing Surrogacy Promises In The Best Interest Of The Child, Browne C. Lewis Oct 2013

Due Date: Enforcing Surrogacy Promises In The Best Interest Of The Child, Browne C. Lewis

Law Faculty Articles and Essays

Professor Lewis argues that the courts should apply contract principles and not family law principles to resolve surrogacy disputes. Since children are unique, Professor Lewis argues, courts should presume that the contract should be specifically enforced. As a result, the intended mother should be adjudicated the legal mother. However, Professor Lewis further argues the the surrogate should be able to present evidence of changed circumstances to rebut the presumption of specific performance and permit the court to determine maternity based upon the best interests of the child.

Wood Unscripted Potentials:How Can Material Deficiencies Become Strengths, Marcin Wójcik Oct 2013

Wood Unscripted Potentials:How Can Material Deficiencies Become Strengths, Marcin Wójcik

Conference papers

This paper presentation investigates how wood traits that are seen as shortcomings for construction can be used to advantage and what kind of design methods and techniques that would require.

Wood has lost market shares as a raw material for mass production processes as a result of its individualised characteristics and difficult to predict behaviours. Reaction wood, spiral grain and juvenile wood – present in almost all timbers -- are seen as deficiencies, causing lower strength and extensive warp during drying. It is proposed to look for design methods and, techniques that utilise material information, such as the individual traits, …

“Undetected, Unsuspected, And Unknown”: Should We Anticipate Problems For Scientific Innovation Following Schering Corp. V. Geneva Pharmaceuticals?, Jeffrey Coleman Oct 2013

“Undetected, Unsuspected, And Unknown”: Should We Anticipate Problems For Scientific Innovation Following Schering Corp. V. Geneva Pharmaceuticals?, Jeffrey Coleman

Fordham Law Review

Once termed the “metaphysics” of patent law, the doctrine of inherent anticipation has befuddled courts and practitioners alike for decades. Inherent anticipation refers to the notion that a previously published reference can disclose each and every limitation of a later–patented invention without expressly delineating those limitations. These (un)disclosed limitations are necessarily present, or inherent, within the previously published reference. When a previously published reference discloses a later–claimed invention expressly or inherently, the patent covering the later–claimed invention is invalid because the invention lacks novelty. Thus, the doctrine of inherent anticipation allows invalidation of a patent in whole or in part …

The Deletion Of The Bre1 Gene In Aspergillus Nidulans Impairs Mitotic Growth, Meiosis, And Dna Damage Repair, Andrea J. Sitton, Steven W. James Oct 2013

The Deletion Of The Bre1 Gene In Aspergillus Nidulans Impairs Mitotic Growth, Meiosis, And Dna Damage Repair, Andrea J. Sitton, Steven W. James

Student Publications

Bre1 is a homotetrameric E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase that heterodimerizes with Rad6, an E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme, in order to ubiquitinate lysine 123 in Aspergillus nidulans. This post-translational modification promotes methylation of lysines 4 and 79 on histone H3, which are required for certain damage repair pathways and for both optimal mitotic cell growth and meiosis [1-3, 12]. ΔBre1 mutants were generated by exposing protoplasts from strains auxotrophic for pyridoxine to a three-way fusion construct made from the Bre1 5’ and 3’ flanking regions and the Aspergillus fumigatus pyroA gene, which served as a selectable marker. Molecular diagnosis was confirmed via trans-locus …

Altered Cholesterol Metabolism In Human Cancers Unraveled By Label-Free Spectroscopic Imaging, Shuhua Yue

Open Access Dissertations

Despite tremendous scientific achievements, cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States. Metabolic reprogramming has been increasingly recognized as a core hallmark of cancer. My dissertation work identified novel diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for human cancers through the study of cholesterol in cancer cells.

Enabled by label-free Raman spectromicroscopy, we performed the first quantitative analysis of lipogenesis at single cell level in human patient cancerous tissues. Our imaging data revealed an unexpected, aberrant accumulation of esterified cholesterol in lipid droplets of high-grade prostate cancer and metastases, but not in normal prostate, benign prostatic hyperplasia, or …

Nitrogen And Potassium Dynamics Of Selected Indiana Soils, Chun Zhao Oct 2013

Nitrogen And Potassium Dynamics Of Selected Indiana Soils, Chun Zhao

Open Access Dissertations

Nitrogen (N) is the most limiting essential nutrient for crop growth. Numerous studies have been performed to improve N fertilizer recommendations. Accurate prediction of soil N supply has been found to be one of the most important factors that determine optimum fertilizer N rates. Seven soils collected from various locations across Indiana at four different depths were tested for N mineralization potential. Results showed that laboratory mineralizable N in the top layer (0-15 cm) of the seven soils ranged from 50 to 68 mg N kg-1 soil. In addition, more than 50% of the total mineralizable N was contributed from …

A Novel Fluid Structure Interaction And Thermal Model To Predict The Cylinder Block / Valve Plate Interface Performance In Swash Plate Type Axial Piston Machines, Marco Zecchi Oct 2013

A Novel Fluid Structure Interaction And Thermal Model To Predict The Cylinder Block / Valve Plate Interface Performance In Swash Plate Type Axial Piston Machines, Marco Zecchi

Open Access Dissertations

The cylinder block / valve plate interface represents one of the most critical design element in the rotating kit of axial piston machines. The thin film of lubricant between cylinder block and valve plate has to fulfill simultaneously a bearing and a sealing function under dynamic load conditions; on the other hand, it represents an important source of power losses due to viscous friction and leakage flow.

An accurate prediction of the time changing characteristics of the interface, in terms of fluid film thickness, dynamic pressure field, load carrying ability and energy dissipation is necessary to generate more efficient and …

The City In Mind: Environmental Literacy And Adaptation In Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Adam Edward Watkins Oct 2013

The City In Mind: Environmental Literacy And Adaptation In Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Adam Edward Watkins

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation argues that a new paradigm of selfhood emerged in nineteenth-century British literature, one that recognized the individual will and environmental influence not as antithetical but as dialectical forces in the formation of the self. The concept of an externally negotiated subject challenges both the inward and socially determined conceptions of self that have dominated the relevant criticism. Informed by empiricist, associationist, and evolutionary theories of the mind, the portrayals of subject-formation in this study highlight the radical changes occurring in the human environment in nineteenth-century, which catalyzed the conception of a malleable yet self-forming subject. Along with the …

Genetic Engineering Of Black Cherry (Prunus Serotina) For Reproductive Sterility And Insect Pest Resistance, Ying Wang Oct 2013

Genetic Engineering Of Black Cherry (Prunus Serotina) For Reproductive Sterility And Insect Pest Resistance, Ying Wang

Open Access Dissertations

Black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) is one of the most valuable hardwoods for high- end cabinetry, furniture, architectural millwork, paneling, and veneer. However, the damage caused by cambial-mining insect pests triggers gummosis in black cherry, a non-specific defense response in which resinous gum is deposited at the site of injury. The gum defects dramatically decrease the yield of high-quality black cherry lumber, and the value can be reduced by as much as 90%. The goal of this project was to optimize the transformation and in vitro rooting system, and to develop transgenic black cherry for reproductive sterility and insect pest …

Statistical Models For Gene And Transcripts Quantification And Identification Using Rna-Seq Technology, Han Wu Oct 2013

Statistical Models For Gene And Transcripts Quantification And Identification Using Rna-Seq Technology, Han Wu

Open Access Dissertations

RNA-Seq has emerged as a powerful technique for transcriptome study. As much as the improved sensitivity and coverage, RNA-Seq also brings challenges for data analysis. The massive amount of sequence reads data, excessive variability, uncertainties, and bias and noises stemming from multiple sources all make the analysis of RAN-Seq data difficult. Despite much progress, RNA-Seq data analysis still has much room for improvement, especially on the quantification of gene and transcript expression levels. The quantification of gene expression level is a direct inference problem, whereas the quantification of the transcript expression level is an indirect problem, because the label of …

High-Pressure Vapor-Phase Catalytic Hydrodeoxygenation Of Lignin-Derived Compounds To Hydrocarbons On Bimetallic Catalysts In The Range Of 0.2-2.4 Mpa., Sara Lynn Yohe Oct 2013

High-Pressure Vapor-Phase Catalytic Hydrodeoxygenation Of Lignin-Derived Compounds To Hydrocarbons On Bimetallic Catalysts In The Range Of 0.2-2.4 Mpa., Sara Lynn Yohe

Open Access Dissertations

Biomass, as the only renewable source of carbon, presents a sustainable alternative to liquid fossil fuels for the production of renewable transportation fuels and chemicals. The lignin portion of biomass poses a significant challenge in the upgrading and conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to fuels and chemicals, and in many current biorefineries is not utilized. However, the lignin fraction is a valuable feedstock due to its aromatic structure, lower O:C ratio than cellulose and hemicellulose, and high energy content (up to 40%) and weight fraction (average 25 wt%) of biomass. Several processes (including fast-pyrolysis, fast-hydropyrolysis, and liquid phase processing) are able …

Scholarly Collaboration In Engineering Education: From Big-Data Scientometrics To User-Centered Software Design, Hanjun Xian Oct 2013

Scholarly Collaboration In Engineering Education: From Big-Data Scientometrics To User-Centered Software Design, Hanjun Xian

Open Access Dissertations

Engineering education research has grown into a flourishing community with an-ever increasing number of publications and scholars. However, recent studies show that a significant amount of engineering education knowledge retains a clear disciplinary orientation. If the gaps in scholarly collaboration continue to be prevalent within the entire community, it will become increasingly difficult to sustain community memory. This will eventually inhibit the propagation of innovations and slow the movement of research findings into practice.

This dissertation studies scholarly collaboration in the engineering education research community. It provides a clear characterization of collaboration problems and proposes potential solutions. The dissertation is …
