Ddx24 Negatively Regulates Cytosolic Rna Mediated Innate Immune Signaling, Zhe Ma
Ddx24 Negatively Regulates Cytosolic Rna Mediated Innate Immune Signaling, Zhe Ma
Open Access Dissertations
Innate immunity is characterized by production of type I interferon which is necessary for the stimulation of effective anti-viral host defense. Upon recognition of cytosol viral dsRNA species, RIG-I-Like Receptors (RLRs), as well as many co-regulators, are recruited to adaptor protein IPS-1 and trigger innate immune responses. FADD (Fas associated with death domain) and RIP1 (receptor-interacting protein 1), have been reported to be recruited to this IPS-1 complex during viral infection and essential for optimal RLR signaling. Here we reported a novel type I interferon inducible DExD/H family helicase DDX24, which was found and confirmed to specifically associate with FADD …

Progress Towards Real-Time Radiation Measurements On Aircraft, L. Duane Bell, W. Kent Tobiska, Robert W. Schunk
Physics Student Research
The Space Weather Center (SWC) at Utah State University has created a team to deploy and obtain radiation effective dose rate data from dosimeters flown on commercial aircraft. The objective is to improve the accuracy of radiation dose and dose rate estimates for commercial aviation flight crews. There are two general sources of radiation exposure for flight crews: (1) the ever-present, background galactic cosmic rays (GCR), which originate outside the solar system, and (2) the solar energetic particle (SEP) events (or solar cosmic rays), which are associated with solar flares and coronal mass ejections lasting for several hours to days …

Conformational Response To Solvent Interaction And Temperature Of A Protein (Histone H3.1) By A Multi-Grained Monte Carlo Simulation, Ras B. Pandey, Barry L. Farmer
Faculty Publications
Interaction with the solvent plays a critical role in modulating the structure and dynamics of a protein. Because of the heterogeneity of the interaction strength, it is difficult to identify multi-scale structural response. Using a coarse-grained Monte Carlo approach, we study the structure and dynamics of a protein (H3.1) in effective solvent media. The structural response is examined as a function of the solvent-residue interaction strength (based on hydropathy index) in a range of temperatures (spanning low to high) involving a knowledge-based (Miyazawa-Jernigan(MJ)) residue-residue interaction. The protein relaxes rapidly from an initial random configuration into a quasi-static structure at low …

The headline article "Student opinions mixed on Campus Council changes" reports on the lukewarm response to an issues-based rather than group-based Campus Council. "Physics professor awarded research grant" reflects on Dr. Susan Lehman's research grant gifted by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The News Section also reports on the largest donation at that point in the college's history, gifted by Ruth Whitmore and A. Morris Williams. In Features, the Voice discusses the Improv club Don't Throw Shoes' expansion in both membership and show frequency. Another article, "Recommended running routes around campus," gives readers a beginner and expert route to run …

Population Genetics Of The Eastern Hellbender (Cryptobranchus Alleganiensis Alleganiensis) Across Multiple Spatial Scales., Shem D. Unger, Olin E. Rhodes Jr., Trent M. Sutton, Rod N. Williams
Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications
Conservation genetics is a powerful tool to assess the population structure of species and provides a framework for informing management of freshwater ecosystems. As lotic habitats become fragmented, the need to assess gene flow for species of conservation management becomes a priority. The eastern hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis alleganiensis) is a large, fully aquatic paedamorphic salamander. Many populations are experiencing declines throughout their geographic range, yet the genetic ramifications of these declines are currently unknown. To this end, we examined levels of genetic variation and genetic structure at both range-wide and drainage (hierarchical) scales. We collected 1,203 individuals from …

Recent studies indicate that membrane vesicles (MVs) secreted by various cells are associated with human diseases, including arthritis, atherosclerosis, cancer, and chronic kidney disease. The possibility that MVs may induce the formation of mineralo-organic nanoparticles (NPs) and ectopic calcification has not been investigated so far. Here, we isolated MVs ranging in size between 20 and 400 nm from human serum and FBS using ultracentrifugation and sucrose gradient centrifugation. The MV preparations consisted of phospholipid-bound vesicles containing the serum proteins albumin, fetuin-A, and apolipoprotein A1; the mineralization-associated enzyme alkaline phosphatase; and the exosome proteins TNFR1 and CD63. Notably, we observed that …

"Nobody Wants To Eat Them Alive:” Ethical Dilemmas And Dual Media Narratives On Domestic Rabbits As Pets And Commodity, Gayane F. Torosyan, Brian Lowe
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
Using semiotic analysis, this study explores changes occurring in the societal perception of rabbits as farm animals as juxtaposed to their increasing popularity as domestic companions. This study is based on a preliminary hypothesis that rabbits are increasingly perceived and portrayed in media as domestic companion animals similar to cats and guinea pigs, which challenges a parallel narrative that views rabbits as commodities for their meat and fur. Operating within a theoretical framework that considers news media as both socially constructed reality and recorded history, the study examines the dynamics of change in numbers of coded news narratives drawn as …

Mediated Bodies: The Construction Of A Wife, Mother, And The Female Body In Television Sitcoms: Roseanne, Saniya Lee Ghanoui
Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association
After first examining several theoretical concepts related to the construction of gender on television and the way in which women are characterized, this paper examines the television show Roseanne to explore the way it changed the representation of a feminist on television. No longer did women have to be childless and career-minded to be equal to men or in some cases better than men, as the character Roseanne Conner reveals on the show. Rather, women were able to articulate their feminist outlooks through their opinions, expressions, and actions. I break the show into four distinct notions of gendered representations: socioeconomic …

The researchers have generated drug-resistant mutations that visibly change the digestive organelle ofPlasmodium falciparum, the blood parasite that causes malaria. The mutation causes grossly enlarged food vacuoles in the malaria parasite. These changes were found to alter susceptibility to specific anti-malarial drugs, said Roland Cooper, associate professor of biology at Dominican.

The goal of influenza-like illness (ILI) surveillance is to determine the timing, location and magnitude of outbreaks by monitoring the frequency and progression of clinical case incidence. Advances in computational and information technology have allowed for automated collection of higher volumes of electronic data and more timely analyses than previously possible. Novel surveillance systems, including those based on internet search query data like Google Flu Trends (GFT), are being used as surrogates for clinically-based reporting of influenza-like-illness (ILI). We investigated the reliability of GFT during the last decade (2003 to 2013), and compared weekly public health surveillance with search query …
