Size, surface charge, and material compositions are known to influence cell uptake of nanoparticles. However, the effect of particle geometry, i.e., the interplay between nanoscale shape and size, is less understood. Here we show that when shape is decoupled from volume, charge, and material composition, under typical in vitro conditions, mammalian epithelial and immune cells preferentially internalize disc-shaped, negatively charged hydrophilic nanoparticles of high aspect ratios compared with nanorods and lower aspect-ratio nanodiscs. Endothelial cells also prefer nanodiscs, however those of intermediate aspect ratio. Interestingly, unlike nanospheres, larger-sized hydrogel nanodiscs and nanorods are internalized more efficiently than their smallest counterparts. …

Severe Mental Illness In Adults And Physical Health Outcomes, Kathryn L. Speeter
Severe Mental Illness In Adults And Physical Health Outcomes, Kathryn L. Speeter
Doctoral Projects
Adults with severe mental illness (SMI) experience higher morbidity and mortality rates than the general population due to poor physical health and because physical and psychiatric health are rarely addressed holistically. Two questions were posed for this project: (a) Will the use of a physical health screening tool and development of healthpromotion goals result in a change in healthy lifestyle behaviors for participants? (b) Will case managers see value in the use of the screening tool and health-promotion action plan development and incorporate the tool into their day-to-day work with clients? Fourteen adults with SMI, from a community case management …

Only Hindsight: Where Are The Historian Futurists?, John M. Rudy
Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
A friend who is planning a pie-in-the-sky conference (about which I'm super excited) texted me today with a quick question. "Who would be a good 'Historian of the Future?'" he asked, adding the bonus that I could dream big. "Money no object," the next text read.
I was at a loss for a few minutes. Who is the historian of the future? Who is trying to visualize that skill-set, categorize that life, read the trends of the past and plot the course of history yet to come? [excerpt]

Reducing Recidivism Among Youthful Offenders: Evidence-Based Practice Strategies, Kate Shade
Reducing Recidivism Among Youthful Offenders: Evidence-Based Practice Strategies, Kate Shade
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Wednesday, July 24, 2013:
In the United States, housing youth in prison with an orientation toward punishment is becoming a thing of the past. Instead, the justice system is returning to a rehabilitation model (Mendel, 2010). However, the U.S. continues to incarcerate more youth than any other country in the world (Raphael, 2011). Effective treatment programs are limited in number and are costly. A meta-analysis of interventions for youthful offenders determined that greater than 50% of the juveniles incarcerated in the U.S. return to the justice system as adults (Lipsey, 2009). The purpose of this presentation is …

Development Of A New Sugar Receptor, William D. Thomas, Dr. Paul B. Savage
Development Of A New Sugar Receptor, William D. Thomas, Dr. Paul B. Savage
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Oligosaccharides are enormously rich in structural information. They are often branched and can be bonded together by a variety of different linkages, unlike polypeptides which contain identical peptide bonds.1 For this reason, polysaccharides play a crucial role in cell recognition.2 Although carbohydrate recognition is known to take place, the event is not well understood.3 In order to better understand the hydrophobic interactions that enhance binding between sugar based receptors and various small hydrophobic molecules in aqueous solvents, the synthesis of a glucose based cavity was attempted (see Fig. 3). The cavity was carefully designed to maximize hydrophobic interactions with small …

Urbanization is accelerating globally, causing a variety of environmental changes such as increases in air temperature, precipitation, atmospheric CO2, and nitrogen (N) deposition. However, the effects of these changes on forest soil carbon (C) sequestration remain largely unclear. Here, we used urban-to-rural environmental gradients in Guangdong Province, southern China, to address the potential effects of these environmental changes on soil C sequestration in Pinus massoniana forests. In contrast to our expectations and earlier observations, soil C content in urban sites was significantly lower than that in suburban and rural sites. Lower soil C pools in urban sites were …

Evaluation Of Mass Casualty Incident Education To Guide Disaster Responder Preparedness, Lin-Ti Chang
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Thursday, July 25, 2013:
Purpose: Disasters are the ultimate test of health care responders and communities capability to provide care to those in need. Nurses play an essential role in disaster response and are often the single largest group of responders in any major disaster. Educating disaster health care responders on the essential elements of MCI management will improve our response to disasters. Evaluating these education programs for validity and role specific educational strengths and opportunities for improvement will advance the science of disaster response management.
Methods: Data were collected from 70 participants completed a 2-day ADMR …
A Biological Mechanism For Adverse Maternal-Child Outcomes In Disadvantaged Populations, Elizabeth J. Corwin, Ying Guo, Anne Dunlop
A Biological Mechanism For Adverse Maternal-Child Outcomes In Disadvantaged Populations, Elizabeth J. Corwin, Ying Guo, Anne Dunlop
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Session presented on: Wednesday, July 24, 2013:
Purpose: This study aimed to explore mechanisms underlying adverse health outcomes in minority women. Minority women experience higher rates of perinatal complications compared to Caucasian women and higher risk of chronic disease across the lifespan. Biological and social contributors have been proposed to explain these disparities yet underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We tested the hypothesis that minority pregnant and postpartum women are unable to regulate inflammatory and stress responses compared to Caucasian women.
Methods: Data was collected from women were during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy through 6-months postpartum. Plasma was collected for …

Global Change Factors On Ecosystem Invasibility, Raj Lal, Jeffrey Dukes, Michael J. Schuster, Nick G. Smith
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Current climate and human-induced changes are projected to alter many regimes of ecosystem functioning. It is projected that invasive species, nonnative species that can be of great detriment to an ecosystem, will benefit under these conditions. The Prairie Invasion and Climate Experiment (PRICLE) studies the effects of two global change factors – N addition and altered precipitation – on invasive species success and the traits that are selected for in a mixed-grass prairie ecosystem. PRICLE is a two by two factorial design over three replications in a restored mixed-grass prairie ecosystem. The major findings from the community traits examination of …

Department of Physics Publications
Clusters of diamond-phase carbon, known as nanodiamonds, exhibit novel mechanical, optical and biological properties that have elicited interest for a wide range of technological applications. Although diamond is predicted to be more stable than graphite at the nanoscale, extreme environments are typically used to produce nanodiamonds. Here we show that nanodiamonds can be stably formed in the gas phase at atmospheric pressure and neutral gas temperatures <100 °C by dissociation of ethanol vapour in a novel microplasma process. Addition of hydrogen gas to the process allows in flight purification by selective etching of the non-diamond carbon and stabilization of the nanodiamonds. The nanodiamond particles are predominantly between 2 and 5 nm in diameter, and exhibit cubic diamond, n-diamond and lonsdaleite crystal structures, similar to nanodiamonds recovered from meteoritic residues. These results may help explain the origin of nanodiamonds in the cosmos, and offer a simple and inexpensive route for the …100>
Coalescence Kinetics Of Lipid Based Bicelles, Andrew Hu
Coalescence Kinetics Of Lipid Based Bicelles, Andrew Hu
Master's Theses
Uniform nanodisc structures can be self assembled from mixtures of different phospholipids. This study focuses on the theoretical and experimental growth kinetics of phospholipid based nanodiscs. Motivation for this project comes from the nanodisc’s small size and their potential use as a carrier for drug delivery. It was observed that at high total lipid concentration the nanodiscs are stable at approximately 10 nm in radius and can remain stable for a long period of time. However, growth of these nanodiscs are observed at relatively low total lipid concentration. The observed growth mechanism is not well understood. In this thesis dynamic …
