Physiological ecology and plant functional traits are often used to explain plant invasion. To gain a better understanding of how traits influence invasion, studies usually compare the invasive plant to a native congener, but there are few conspecific examples in the literature. In North America, the presence of native and introduced genetic lineages of the common reed, Phragmites australis, presents a unique example to evaluate how traits influence plant invasion. We reviewed the literature on functional traits of P. australis lineages in North America, specifically contrasting lineages present on the Atlantic Coast. We focused on differences in physiology between the lineage introduced …

Choreography Of Silk Spinning Behavior In Webspinners (Embioptera): Phylogenetic Signal Or A Microhabitat Dance?, Janice Edgerly-Rooks
Choreography Of Silk Spinning Behavior In Webspinners (Embioptera): Phylogenetic Signal Or A Microhabitat Dance?, Janice Edgerly-Rooks
Biology
Silk spinning defines the morphologically constrained embiopterans. All individuals spin for protection, including immatures, adult males and the wingless females. Enlarged front tarsi are packed with silk glands and clothed with ejectors. They spin by stepping with their front feet and releasing silk against substrates and onto pre-existing silk, often cloth-like. Spinning is stereotypical and appears to differ between species in frequency and probability of transition between two spin-step positions. This spinning choreography was assessed using thousands of spin-steps scored in the laboratory for 22 species to test (1) the body size hypothesis predicting that spinning would be more complex …

BACKGROUND: Optimal postoperative pain management is important to ensure patient comfort and early mobilization.
METHODS: In this double-blind, placebo- and active-controlled, randomized clinical trial, we evaluated postoperative pain following knee replacement in patients receiving placebo, etoricoxib (90 or 120 mg), or ibuprofen 1800 mg daily for 7 days. Patients >=18 years of age who had pain at rest >=5 (0--10 Numerical Rating Scale [NRS]) after unilateral total knee replacement were randomly assigned to placebo (N = 98), etoricoxib 90 mg (N = 224), etoricoxib 120 mg (N = 230), or ibuprofen 1800 mg (N = 224) postoperatively. Co-primary endpoints included …

The primary purpose of these procedures is to demonstrate for teaching and research purposes how to record the activity of living primary sensory neurons responsible for proprioception as they are detecting joint position and movement, and muscle tension. Electrical activity from crustacean proprioceptors and tension receptors is recorded by basic neurophysiological instrumentation, and a transducer is used to simultaneously measure force that is generated by stimulating a motor nerve. In addition, we demonstrate how to stain the neurons for a quick assessment of their anatomical arrangement or for permanent fixation. Staining reveals anatomical organization that is representative of chordotonal organs …

GluA2-containing AMPA receptors and their association with protein kinase M zeta (PKMζ) and post-synaptic density-95 (PSD-95) are important for learning, memory and synaptic plasticity processes. Here we investigated these synaptic markers in the context of an acute 1h platform stress, which can disrupt spatial memory retrieval for a short-term memory on the object placement task and long-term memory retrieval on a well-learned radial arm maze task. Acute stress increased serum corticosterone and elevated the expression of synaptic PKMζ while decreasing synaptic GluA2. Using co-immunoprecipitation, we found that this stressor promotes the clustering of GluA2, PKMζ and PSD-95, which is consistent …

This weekend, I have the great fortune to participate in Comics Studies in the US South, a symposium held at the University of South Carolina. My talk explores the juncture of linguistic production, race and ethnicity, and sexuality in characters that are presented as Southern. It isn’t my intention to make a broad survey of comics but instead to examine two in particular, Kyle’s Bed & Breakfast, by Greg Fox, and Stuck Rubber Baby, by Howard Cruse.
The first comic, Kyle’s Bed & Breakfast, is not a comic about the South. It is set in Northport, …

Localization And Dynamics Of Myosin Vb In Mammalian Cells, Eun-Ji Kim
Localization And Dynamics Of Myosin Vb In Mammalian Cells, Eun-Ji Kim
Doctoral Dissertations
The myosin superfamily is a large and diverse family of proteins that are capable of binding to actin filaments and generating mechanical forces by hydrolyzing ATP. Myosins perform a diverse set of functions in cell, including endocytosis, exocytosis, movement of pigment granules or mRNA, and cell motility. More specifically, Class-V myosins are a group of barbed-end directed motors that have been implicated in organelle transport. For example, in vitro motility assays suggest that myosin Va is a processive motor with a step size of 36 nm and moves at the speed of 0.6 µm/sec, which is consistent with a functional …

Reactive Pathways In The Chlorobenzene–Ammonia Dimer Cation Radical: New Insights From Experiment And Theory, Scott A. Reid
Reactive Pathways In The Chlorobenzene–Ammonia Dimer Cation Radical: New Insights From Experiment And Theory, Scott A. Reid
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Building upon our recent studies of noncovalent interactions in chlorobenzene and bromobenzene clusters, in this work we focus on interactions of chlorobenzene (PhCl) with a prototypical N atom donor, ammonia (NH3). Thus, we have obtained electronic spectra of PhCl···(NH3)n (n = 1–3) complexes in the region of the PhCl monomer S0 −S1 (ππ*) transition using resonant 2-photon ionization (R2PI) methods combined with time-of-flight mass analysis. Consistent with previous studies, we find that upon ionization the PhCl···NH3 dimer cation radical reacts primarily via Cl atom loss. A second channel, HCl loss, is …
