Experimental Design Methodology Applied To The Oxidation Of Quinolines In Aqueous Medium By Electro-Fenton Process, Souhaila Trabelsi Souissi, Nihal Oturan, Nizar Bellakhal, Mehmet A. Oturan

Journal of Electrochemistry

The degradation behavior of 8-hydroxyquinoleine sulfate (8-HQS), a model molecule of quinolines, was studied in an aqueous medium by electro-Fenton process using a carbon felt cathode and a platinum anode. The great oxidation ability of this process is due to a large production of hydroxyl radical (OH) by electrochemically induced Fenton’s reagent (H2O2, Fe2+). Hydroxyl radicals are very powerful oxidizing agents which react on organics up to complete mineralization. A factorial experimental design was used for determining the operating parameters on the degradation of 8-HQS in an aqueous medium. The results showed that the …

Streptomyces Coelicolor Encodes A Urate-Responsive Transcriptional Regulator With Homology To Pecs From Plant Pathogens, Hao Huang, Brian J. Mackel, Anne Grove Oct 2013

Streptomyces Coelicolor Encodes A Urate-Responsive Transcriptional Regulator With Homology To Pecs From Plant Pathogens, Hao Huang, Brian J. Mackel, Anne Grove

Faculty Publications

Many transcriptional regulators control gene activity by responding to specific ligands. Members of the multiple-antibiotic resistance regulator (MarR) family of transcriptional regulators feature prominently in this regard, and they frequently function as repressors in the absence of their cognate ligands. Plant pathogens such as Dickeya dadantii encode a MarR homolog named PecS that controls expression of a gene encoding the efflux pump PecM in addition to other virulence genes. We report here that the soil bacterium Streptomyces coelicolor also encodes a PecS homolog (SCO2647) that regulates a pecM gene (SCO2646). S. coelicolor PecS, which exists as a homodimer, binds the …

Antiviral Rna Silencing Initiated In The Absence Of Rde-4, A Double-Stranded Rna Binding Protein, In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Xunyang Guo, Rui Zhang, Jeffrey Wang, Rui Lu

Faculty Publications

Small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) processed from double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) of virus origins mediate potent antiviral defense through a process referred to as RNA interference (RNAi) or RNA silencing in diverse organisms. In the simple invertebrate Caenorhabditis elegans, the RNAi process is initiated by a single Dicer, which partners with the dsRNA binding protein RDE-4 to process dsRNA into viral siRNAs (viRNAs). Notably, in C. elegans this RNA-directed viral immunity (RDVI) also requires a number of worm-specific genes for its full antiviral potential. One such gene is rsd-2 (RNAi spreading defective 2), which was implicated in RDVI in our previous studies. …

Methyl Halide Production By Calcareous Periphyton Mats From The Florida Everglades, Ann Eileen Raffel Oct 2013

Methyl Halide Production By Calcareous Periphyton Mats From The Florida Everglades, Ann Eileen Raffel

Dissertations and Theses

Methyl halides are trace gases with both natural and anthropogenic origins. Once generated, these gases transport chlorine and bromine into the stratosphere, where they play an important role in ozone depleting catalytic cycles. The Florida Everglades is one location where methyl halide emissions have been proposed to be elevated due to high primary production and ionic halogens. This region also provides a unique study environment due to salt water intrusions, which occur during storm or low marsh water level-high tide events. The purpose of this research was twofold. First, quantification of methyl chloride (CH3Cl) and methyl bromide (CH …

Structure–Activity Relationships And Molecular Modeling Of Sphingosine Kinase Inhibitors, Dong Jae Baek, Neil Macritchie, Nahoum G. Anthony, Simon P. Mackay, Susan Pyne, Nigel J. Pyne, Robert Bittman

Publications and Research

The design, synthesis, and evaluation of the potency of new isoform-selective inhibitors of sphingosine kinases 1 and 2 (SK1 and SK2), the enzyme that catalyzes the phosphorylation of d-erythro-sphingosine to produce the key signaling lipid, sphingosine 1-phosphate, are described. Recently, we reported that 1-(4-octylphenethyl)piperidin-4-ol (RB-005) is a selective inhibitor of SK1. Here we report the synthesis of 43 new analogues of RB-005, in which the lipophilic tail, polar headgroup, and linker region were modified to extend the structure–activity relationship profile for this lead compound, which we explain using modeling studies with the recently published crystal structure of SK1. We provide …

All Works

Globally, reef-building corals are the most prolific producers of dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP), a central molecule in the marine sulphur cycle and precursor of the climate-active gas dimethylsulphide. At present, DMSP production by corals is attributed entirely to their algal endosymbiont, Symbiodinium. Combining chemical, genomic and molecular approaches, we show that coral juveniles produce DMSP in the absence of algal symbionts. DMSP levels increased up to 54% over time in newly settled coral juveniles lacking algal endosymbionts, and further increases, up to 76%, were recorded when juveniles were subjected to thermal stress. We uncovered coral orthologues of two algal genes recently identified …

While advances in instrumentation physics have made many areas more accessible to undergraduate physics laboratories, other areas are still beyond reach. Open data sets and simulations can open up some other frontiers of physics, such as Space Physics and Astronomy. In this talk, I will give an overview of some resources for open data and simulations, and then describe my experiences using these tools in both introductory and advanced labs in our curriculum.

Aligning The Principles Of Permaculture Design With Sustainable Open Access Practice, Jennifer Laherty, Stacy Konkiel Oct 2013

Aligning The Principles Of Permaculture Design With Sustainable Open Access Practice, Jennifer Laherty, Stacy Konkiel

SJSU Open Access Conference

Open Access has seen increased acceptance in recent years, yet academic libraries continue to struggle with supporting and growing the Open Access institutional repositories (IRs) and increasing faculty awareness of and buy-in for Open Access and related scholarly communication issues. In this presentation, we propose a reframing of Open Access and scholarly communication strategies using the twelve principles of permaculture, an environmental design theory that provides a sustainable architecture for self-maintained agricultural systems modeled from naturally occurring ecosystems (Hemenway, 2009). Such an approach is beneficial for many reasons. Permaculture emphasizes maximum benefit from minimum effort and resources, which resonates with …

Outreach To Science Faculty And Students Through Research Exhibitions, Tina Chan, Chris Hebblethwaite Oct 2013

Outreach To Science Faculty And Students Through Research Exhibitions, Tina Chan, Chris Hebblethwaite

Upstate New York Science Librarians Conference

Presentation describes bringing a display of student scholarship to Penfield Library at SUNY Oswego. Two science librarians approached faculty members regarding potential participation and then organized a showcase of science research inside the library. Having research posters displayed in a visible, central, and active location allows the broader campus community to view the latest research from students and faculty. Reaching out to science faculty reminds them that librarians can help with their library needs, and that the library is a place to highlight their and their students’ research.
